White Horse Tavern Newport Reviews from The Last Year
You know, there are some things, some places that are so
You know, there are some things, some places that are so intertwined and whose identities are so aligned with each other that, if you do NOT experience one, you do not experience the other. White Horse Tavern and Newport Rhode Island feel like 2 of those symbiotic things to me. I hesitated making reservations at White Horse because the reviews I read were not stellar on the food. However, the staff at my hotel said it was a solid place and very good with a great historical vibe. So, I thought I should go. Bottom line? I loved it at the White Horse. To be honest, the food was not the BEST I have ever had in the world but it was VERY VERY GOOD!!! For one, I had my 1st Scotch Egg ever. A lightly boiled duck egg encased in sausage and bread crumbs, then fried. Cut open, the yolk was runny. Together this appetizer was fantastic! I loved it. So unique, so tasty and a great way to start my trip in Newport. Frankly, I cannot remember what I had as my main course because the Scotch Egg was so darn good! The ambience was phenomenal. I felt like I had stepped into a roadside tavern from 1776. The wood was worn, I could smell the smoke of the centuries. Just from a historical basis, it was interesting to see what a "restaurant" that was over 200 years old looks like. But the best, the very best, thing about my experience at the White Horse was the waitress Janessa. She was DA BOMB!!! So smart, funny, interesting, helpful and great at her job. I don't know how she could talk to us for so long because she had quite a few tables and was very busy. But, as I watched her, she made personal connections with everyone she helped. She certainly did that with me! I wanted her to sit down and eat with us. If I lived nearby, I would want to be her friend and drinking buddy. If you come across Janessa, please tell her hello from Lew with the red glasses!!! In short, don't be a snob and let the mediocre reviews about the food keep you away from this place. The food is very good. But it is the experience here that you will be talking about for a long time. I highly recommend the White Horse Tavern!
Wonderful time with great staff
Visiting the New England states while on vacation with my mother and sister. We were not able to get a reservation at a moment’s notice but we stopped in just to see the oldest tavern in the country. It was there where I met Uncle Bill. I mentioned that we didn’t have reservations but could we just have a cocktail. He made sure we had a table in the bar and checked on us to make sure we were happy. We had a wonderful time with great food and cocktails. Thanks to Bill, we will definitely be back!
We won’t be back
Very disappointing evening. We arrived for our 6 pm reservation a few minutes early but were seated on the second floor immediately. Charming old building and we were really looking forward to a great experience. Our server came over and went through the specials. We ordered the appetizer special and a nice bottle of wine. Ten min later the wine arrived and she took our dinner order. We both ordered their signature dish- Beef Wellington to be cooked medium rare. Five min later they served our Beef Wellington. We hadn’t received our appetizer or even had time to enjoy the first glass of wine. The meat was also medium not medium rare. When we were finally able to get our server’s attention we told her we never received our appetizer. Her deer in the headlights expression said it all - she had screwed up our order. She said she would go get it now- but we had already finished our meal. So by 6:15 pm we were done with our meal and still had 3/4 bottle of wine. I asked to speak to the manager only to let him know that we felt rushed and not well taken care of. I did not want any monetary compensation but simply wanted him to be aware that our evening was ruined due to poor service. He never once said sorry and actually said you are rushed - you can stay till midnight and finish your wine if you want. He then said he had something special in mind for us - we never saw him again. Our server basically ghosted us after that and only spoke when she brought our check. As she put it down she said in a snarky voice “I’m sorry your evening wasn’t what you expected” no acknowledgment of mistakes made. We won’t be back. Thankfully we went to Castle Hill for drinks after dinner and had lovely service
Big Disappointment
Dinner at this restaurant was meant to be the highlight of our visit to Newport. Instead it turned out to be the least impressive of our two days there. We, unfortunately, made our dinner reservation for 8:30 PM. We were not advised that the kitchen closed down at 9:00 PM so were enjoying our pre-dinner martinis, nicely prepared by our server, Destiny. (She actually turned out to be the best part of our experience at the White Horse Tavern). At about 2 minutes to nine we were informed the kitchen was closing BUT they would taken our order anyway. Clearly the care that went into preparing my meal was non-existent The kitchen staff were likely more anxious to go home versus making sure food was properly prepared? My entree, the Beef Wellington, was supposed to be the Tavern's signature dish. Absolutely terrible. In fairness, my wife's Beef Bourguignon was quite tasty. A different prep time and effort required. So we had very mediocre food and were rushed to finish. Very disappointing!

This is a "sharp operation" as an old friend of ours used to say. Great service, amiable ambiance, fantastic food. The whole experience was well done!

If you're visiting Newport, you must come to this place at least once but be prepared to fork over some $$$! Food isn't the best you've ever had but, overall, it's cool to be dining in a place that has been serving costumers since the 1600s! It definitely has that early America vibe! The menu and food items were fairly creative but wasn't executed really well. I don't think the ingredients or final product warrant the cost of the meal here. Again, you're paying to dine in this super old historic building - which is fun. I started with a smoked old fashioned with black walnut bitters and that was done nicely. The French onion soup was good and presented nicely but, I've had better. The duck confit with cassoulet and root vegetable was again, good, but just lacking in overall flavor. The duck was tender yet also slightly dry. The side of mushrooms were tasty and interesting due to the various types of mushrooms used but was a little salty. The Tavern Candy Bar dessert was the best part of the meal. The coconut magic shell took it over the top! At first, the service was a little slow and we waited a little longer than we wanted to for our main course. At some point mid-meal, another waiter took over and then it improved.
Very neat little and cool experience.
This is said to be the oldest tavern building in the US and possibly the oldest/first restaurant in the US. They have a few artificers on display that were found in the basement of the building from during the civil war time and supposedly there's a ghost that hangs out here. The food we all had was delicious. Our service was a little slow. Very cool place overall.
Ordered the beef wellington and steak frites as entrees.
Beef wellington portion was smaller than expected. The mashed potatoes that came with the dish compensated for the underwhelming proportion of beef wellington. Also, in my opinion the breading could have been thicker. Steak frites were stupendous and Filet was cooked perfectly. The fries were a little on the dryer side but dish was overall a 4.2/5
Rather full of themselves.
The service was attentive and the food was good. However, when asked if we could substitute arugula for something else, we were not told it would be an up charge of $7.00 per person (on a meal that was costing $52 to start with!). We sat at the table for 20 minutes before bread was offered and then it arrived with the meal. There was an oaf at a nearby table who had already made a disturbance with insisting his wine be decanted and then proceeded to have a very loud conversation on speaker phone. He should have been asked to take it outside. Two issues arise with this pricey restaurant; -they are very clear and insistent that they have a dress code of “Business Casual” and actually describe acceptable clothing options, however, they don’t do anything to enforce it. There were men in shorts, hats, people in jeans and tee shirts. It isn’t fair to charge people a small fortune insinuating an upscale ambiance and then revert to tolerating inappropriate dress and behavior. -they will charge you $25 pp if you do not cancel a reservation prior to 48 hours of your scheduled time. That may be fine for holidays but there was no need for a reservation anyway. Going to the White Horse on a weeknight, off season, is not a problem. If you like history this is an interesting spot. Otherwise, I would think twice and don’t assume anything when ordering. This place is quite adept at the bait and switch tactic to increase your bill.
How can you possibly be in Rhode Island and not stop to eat
How can you possibly be in Rhode Island and not stop to eat at the white horse tavern ? It's the oldest restaurant in the United States . It's a limited menu but it's well prepared and very expensive (dinner and apps were $186 plus tip ..we had meat and cheese appetizer and I have a beef Wellington for dinner . They have a decent wine menu and the staff is great . Come here for the experience of eating in a restaurant that has been around for 350 years !!
Have been going here for years.
The service is always spot on and love the atmosphere. It's great in the winter to sit by the fire but because the building is so old it's cold. Most of the meals have been great but did have a ham dinner that was disappointing but I still go back! It's a place you need to experience at least once!

Food: The dessert was delicious, the French onion soup was very good, and the beef bourguignon was OK. I would have liked my potatoes a little firmer and my mirepoix more finely chopped. Service: top-notch Value: this is the oldest restaurant in the country. A historic landmark. The location, the building, the walls, and the beams are just so fascinating. However, it is a little pricy. Be prepared to Pay $80/person.
Delicious meal and fun time.
Wonderful meal during a cousins' weekend. There was six of us so we had our own private room. it is a very small location so larger groups should be aware of that. Our waitress was really fun. Food was excellent. Everyone really enjoyed their meals. Highly recommend for a dinner out if you are in Newport.
This was definitely a place on my bucket list.
The fact that this restaurant/tavern is the oldest in the US, and 10th oldest in the WORLD was enough for me. The ambiance is incredible. While the tavern has been renovated over time, and parts of the building have been refurbished or replaced - the fact that this building exists is wild! The restaurant is cozy and warm, with hunter green walls and dark wood accents makes it feel like a historic, warm hug. I originally heard about this restaurant on the 8/12/2020 podcast of Ghost Hunting in New England. While the experience was fulfilling - the faire left us a bit empty. We shared the fried cheese appetizer - the topping was tasty, but the base was just room temp fried cheese sticks. So - meh. My husband ordered the lobster tortellini, and it was simply yummy, creamy deliciousness. The balance of the lobster and the seasonings was well balanced and very filling enjoyable. I ordered the beef bourguignon, which was richly flavorful and hearty. The potatoes were undercooked, but the flavor and the smell of the meal was a marvelous symphony! Our meal ( I had a glass of tea and my husband had two beers) was around $150 including tip. When I get an opportunity to return, I think I'll sit at the bar and just enjoy how beautiful and historical this building is. Everyone who loves history should make this a MUST DO.
The beef Wellington was one of the best things I've ever
The beef Wellington was one of the best things I've ever eaten, it was so delicious and the sauce that came with it was also amazing. We went in March so it was easy to get a reservation but we heard during busy season it might be a challenge. Our waitress was so nice and friendly and very attentive. It was cool to be eating at the oldest tavern in the US.
CHARMING PUB LEFT ME "GREEN" ALL OVER.......
We go to Newport regularly and had yet to try The White Horse as it has odd hours, only opens at 5pm with no lunch service or late night. The night we went we got there at the crack of five (we had dinner reservations elsewhere) to have drinks in the bar, which was quickly filling up. Visually we found the place to be everything we'd hoped it would be - really charming and we were given a seat right in front of the bar's roaring real-wood fireplace. All was splendid....until I ordered a dirty martini. Yes, I drank it. No, I shouldn't have as it wasn't just dirty, it was absolutely downright filthy. I mean, if your idea of "dirty" is an olive juice with a splash of vodka, then you'd have been in heaven. We left and had a wonderful dinner at The Chanler yet I can't help but thinking if that drink was, in fact, some kind of a "dirty" joke because it definitely pushed the bounds of what the human palate could handle. The staff was very friendly, however, and I'd go back, yet only for the atmosphere and a glass of wine or beer.
Fabulous experience at The White Horse Tavern
Our party of 4 had SUCH a lovely experience at The White Horse Tavern on 2/17/24. The service was gracious and timely; the food was delicious (beautiful seared scallops, swordfish, French onion soup and parmesan truffle fries good enough to fight over.) The fireplaces made everything warm and cozy. This is a very special place with exceptional food and staff. Highly recommend!
Great Meal
Great meal, Great staff and great food. We had 3 courses and really enjoyed them only thing i can say is its very cold but they did have fires and heating on so wont mark them down for that. i was served by the girl with brown hair with blonde fringe she was really sweet.
Fabulous meal in a fabulous setting
We came here to celebrate our anniversary and were pleased with the choice. The downstairs dining room is attractive and cozy. An actual fire was burning in the huge fireplace. The food was excellent -- we both had the duck confit -- and the service impeccable. We highly recommend it.
Wonderful food in this historic location
The White Horse Tavern is very special. It was constructed before 1673 and is believed to be the oldest tavern building in the United States. And it is certainly busy, as evidenced by our experience making a reservation. Despite being in the off season (end of October), when we tried to make a reservation, it was fully booked for the next two days, although there was an opening on the third day (a Tuesday). We both had Beef Wellington (their specialty) and it was excellent! Newport's Van Bueren family donated money to the private Preservation Society of Newport to restore the building in 1952, after years of neglect as a boarding house. After the restoration, it was sold and once again operated as a private tavern and restaurant, and it remains a popular drinking and dining location today. We were certainly glad that this historic building was restored and returned to its original function! And the food was even good - wonderful, in fact.

Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.

Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!

Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
