ULU Sushi Lounge Kailua-Kona Reviews from The Last Year
Love it here.
The ocean view is amazing and service is great! Got the Hualalai Oysters and Miso Broiled Crab Leg as an appetizer. We also had the Assorted Sashimi and King Crab Roll!
Food was ok.
. not worth the price. I expected more sushi rolls but they only had three and out of those three, two were vegan options. Our server did not know much about out the menu. But the view was amazing with a glass of wine.

I came here for my birthday and the sushi was excellent! I got the fresh ahi roll and crab roll. What made this place so special in the evening was the magic of a quiet beach where you're only listening to ocean and the tiki lights reflecting onto the crystal clear waters where you can almost see the bottom. It's breathtaking and I can't wait to come back!
$ 200 fish with absolutely no flavor or salt.
Literally had no flavor. All the food was mediocre at best. Way overpriced. Never again. Not worth your money at all.
Loved this SPECIAL spot
Definitely a special dining experience. Wait staff well trained and knowledgeable. From someone in the wine business, this was the best ever wines-by-the-glass list I had ever seen. While pricy (2021 Far Niente Char $39, 2019 Hall Cab $39) both were superb. Black cod and Wagyu short ribs Michelin-star worthy. Setting fab.
Absolutely amazing anniversary dinner under the stars with
Absolutely amazing anniversary dinner under the stars with the waves lapping in the background. Service and food were outstanding cannot wait to go back and order more items :)
Food was one of our best meals when we stayed at Hualalai!
Food was one of our best meals when we stayed at Hualalai! Fresh grilled kampachii w steamed Bok choy and sticky rice - my fav! The fish was fresh and seasoned and cooked perfect! My husband had a ahi Tina sashimi and our friends enjoyed crab rolls and farm to table fresh Big Island tomatoe salad. All our food came out quickly and practically gone in seconds. A very popular restaurant at the Hualalai FourSeasons. Sorry no photos this time but we will add when going there soon! Make sure to reserve your table in advance. Delaney, our server was great and we had her as our server before. Very attentive and especially attentive to our special diets. Enjoy this waterfront restaurant and I hope you love it as much as we did! Happy eating!
Came here for an anniversary dinner.
The service was impeccable. Food was amazing. The whole experience was definitely one to remember. We were greeted with a "Happy Anniversary" from multiple people, which was very nice. My 13 year old son said it was the best meal he ever had. It is expensive, no doubt about that so if you're not comfortable spending hundreds on one meal then maybe skip this place. Go early if you aren't staying at the hotel because it is a beautiful hotel to look around.
beautiful setting and dining experience
If the service had been on time it would have been perfect. Appetizer was very slow coming out of the kitchen, and so was dinner. Other than that, it is a beautiful setting. The food was perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. Certainly one of the nicest restaurants we have attended. We were very impressed with the Hostess asking if we had any food allergies (yes!), and then equally impressed when they brought fresh gluten free bread. Cocktails were innovative, and an amazing wine list. A great evening! Four Seasons should be proud of this team and the restaurant.
Food and ambiance were great, service not so much.
I almost made this 3 stars. Our server, Delaney, was great during our first course, the gem lettuce salad, and seemed knowledgeable about the menu when we were ordering. But when our mains were served, she disappeared for a long period. Here I was, faced with a $225 seafood tower and no side plate to eat from, no soy sauce to mix this the wasabi and no dish to mix the soy and wasabi. I ate a few things like the oysters that I could, straight from the tower, really not having a 5 star feeling. Then we stopped eating because she had taken our bread promising more (not delivered) and also we needed the items such as soy. Someone came and tried to take our plates, that's how long it was. When Delaney finally showed up to service the table next to us, I flagged her down and asked for the needed dishes and soy. When she brought this, I had realized that I wanted butter for the lobster and requested that. It was delivered but not warm. Meantime the promised bread finally arrived. Mediocre service especially at these prices. The food - the oysters were amazing, they had salt and some seaweed on them and there was a nice rice vinegar sauce to accompany them. Briny and delicious. ?The crab was also perfect, and I had it with the rice vinegar sauce because cocktail sauce would have masked the perfect crab flavor. The lobster was drowning in water and difficult to drain as it was cut into pieces (almost). I don't like y food soaked in water because it dilutes the taste, It was very slightly overcooked but after the butter came I enjoyed it. The sashimi was pretty wow. Really rush and large pieces. Once I had some soy sauce I could appreciate it with a little wasabi. The presentation as you can see was over the top. The shrimp were ok, I didn't like them being soaked in cocktail sauce. I would have used my butter. Hubby got the seared ahi which he really enjoyed. The corn that it came with was especially delicious. The gem lettuce salad was basically a Caesar with shaved egg yolk and togarashi. It was very enjoyable. This place of course has a fantastic relaxed vibe, being part of the Four Seasons. For the great food and ambience, I'm giving 4 stars, but as I said in this level of restaurant I would have expected more attentive service, especially right after the main course was delivered.
Incredible dining experience, truly for special occasions.
We were fortunate to have great weather and had a front row seat to a gorgeous sunset
Went for Valentines Day.
Exceptional. Perfect table right on the waterfront. This place is a must go if you are in this area. Top Notch!
Sewer-Special Topping, Dirty glasses, Broken Bottle and more…
Oh boy, where do I even start with the most epic fail of a "fancy" dinner ever? Picture this: February 15, 2024, my wife and I decided to treat ourselves to a dinner that ended up costing us a cool $500 - and that was us being cheap! Apparently, to actually enjoy yourself, you're supposed to drop at least a grand. Yeah, right! So, we're trying to keep our spirits high despite the food being meh, when the server brings us these sad-looking glasses for the least expensive bottle of Chardonnay they had - a mere $120 Stags Leap. We asked for a swap, only to get glasses that looked like they'd been through a dishwasher disaster. We were this close to bailing. As if that wasn't enough, they tell us we can't sit inside and plonk us outside with a storm brewing like it's the end of the world. Next thing you know, a bottle of tequila makes a break for it off the bar and smashes - yup, the wind was auditioning for a disaster movie. Finally, they let us inside. And then, the star of the show, a ginormous cockroach, decides to make an entrance, heading straight for our table. I nearly jumped out of my skin, and it reroutes to the next table. Crawling on the leg of unsuspecting guest. The guest casually flicks it back onto the floor, and a waiter crushes it underfoot as if it's just another day at the office. And yep, this wasn't a cute little bug; it was a sewer-special. Saw a few more of his buddies as we made our great escape to the car. And just when I thought it couldn't get any crazier, here's a kicker: I'm at a place fancy enough to wipe out my wallet, and I'm thinking, "Surely, they've got real wasabi." Nope. I take one bite and it's horseradish. I ask the waiter, and get this, she swears up and down it's the real deal. I couldn't help but laugh out loud! Then, to top off this comedy show, we pass on the soufflé, and suddenly, our waitress treats us like we're invisible. There I am, pouring my own wine, feeling like I'm in some sort of self-service bistro. What a night, huh? And the punchline? Not a single "sorry" or a free dessert to smooth things over. Just a "thanks, now scram." All this at a high-end Four Seasons Hotel, can you believe it? They must think we're all a bunch of clowns! Honestly, in a weird way, it was kind of hilarious. I've got to say, I do get a kick out of these disaster dinners.
Terrible experience !
Terrible experience ! Main dish was served before the entrees. Yes, the curry before the $47 crab sushi and the hamachi carpaccio. Why? There was a line up of orders at the sushi bar and the grill’s kitchen is closing at 9:15pm. So the waitress just ordered everything at the same time. Terrible service ! In any restaurant in the world, they would try to make up for their mistake, not here. It was a cafeteria experience. Try the Fairmont lounge, Mauna Kea or the Sushi Shiono instead.
Another win for Birthday dinner!
We’ve eaten here 3-4 times, whenever we’re on the island celebrating hubby’s birthday. The food, albeit quite expensive, is always phenomenal & the service is even better. I tried the locally farmed Kompachi (sp?) fish & it was quite good, but the miso black cod hubby had was over the top delicious. There really is o need to order an extra side (we had mashed potatoes), as each entree has plenty of veggies included. Hubby’s dessert was complimentary & also very good…a chocolate/nutty creation.
Mahalo Ulu!
Mahalo Ulu for a memorable 'redo' for an anniversary dinner we missed 5 years ago when we had to cancel Ulu and go to Oahu for eye surgery! We rebooked that anniversary on this year's visit. We had the perfect table overlooking the sand, sea and sunset. It is a 'sushi lounge' so we ordered an excellent eel sushi to share and thanks to another reviewer the Bao buns that were actually made of u'lu (breadfruit that was miraculously turned into buns) and pork...one of the best dishes we've ever eaten anywhere! We had a couple of cocktails that were unmemorable and served in tiny glasses that made them more unappealing...but the dessert! Oh my (also from another reviewers recommendation): chocolate soufle (next time we'll try the pineapple one)...sublime...since we didn't order a big entres the bill was appropriate although the drinks were overpriced. Also next time: the yakisoba noodles if they're on the menu. Service was excellent and casual...It was a lovely evening to make another 'big one' and we hope to repeat the experience one day. Mahalo nui Ulu...
Amazing meal in a stunning setting with exceptional service!
We celebrated my friend’s 50th birthday here and it truly was amazing. The food, service and the beautiful surroundings made it such a special occasion! They even treated our table to a complementary soufflé for my friend’s birthday which was amazing! We had some sushi, the charred avocado and tomato Salad and calamari as an appetizer which were all delicious! And our meals were fabulous too. Definitely a perfect place to celebrate a special occasion.
Amazing anniversary dinner.
Go here for a special meal. My wife and I were there celebrating our wedding anniversary. Our reservation was for 6pm and the friends who recommended this restaurant aptly suggested that we arrive a bit early and walk around the beautiful grounds. When we arrived we were seated at a beachfront table just in time to watch the sun set. Justine was our waitperson and she provided remarkable service. She really made the evening feel special. The food was amazing, the setting is unlike anywhere else. Definitely will be back. One more thing - get the soufflé! We ordered the chocolate soufflé for dessert and it was so so so good.
Beautiful and delicious veranda by the ocean
Beautiful venue by the ocean inside the luxurious Four Seasons. Having said that the adjective "luxury" and the brand "Four Season" clearly frame the cost level of the evening, the quality of the dinner was decidedly high: a beautiful evening. Spectacular view, perfect service, very present but never intrusive, top quality of the dishes. Nothing to say, well done.
Striking a Balance and Doing it Well
My family and I go to the Four Seasons resort once every two years or so. When we are there, the tradition is to have dinner at Ulu before we depart to return home. This year, only my son and I made it and we had dinner the last night before we left. We shared a plate of yellowtail carpaccio, he had the pork bao appetizer and the Kona coffee coated filet mignon and I had the Ahi poke and the crab noodles. Each of the above dishes were superb. The pork bao and filet have been on the menu on and off for the last 10 years and by now they really should be recognized as crowd favorites - reliable items where you can't go wrong. The Ahi poke was surprisingly good. The table-side preparation added some flare but there was substance in the form of the very high quality of tuna used. The crab noodles were surprising - the overall format of the dish had a eastern "street" aspect to it, but contradicted by the very "western" approach of having al dente mochi noodles. I really liked this clash going on. Kudos to whoever dreamed up this item. To top off the banana souffle and pineapple upside down cake were great. Coming back to the same restaurant can be a real test. The menu can't stay exactly the same because people can get tired of it. Change it too much and you lose your fan base. Ulu strikes a good balance of east/west, old and new and does it in style. Just one note. My son and I both agreed that, while Ulu dinner was great, the breakfast at Ulu was slightly off. The selection of food at the buffets seemed a bit smaller and the quality of the food was a little bit off. The best example was the breakfast potatoes. Not very good.
