The Oar is located in an angular building with 3 entries into an enclosed patio with several dining tables, then a door leads to the casual bar area with about 8 tables and continues through into the main formal dining room with about 15 tables. The decor is contemporary with art and oars on the walls, white cloth tablecloths, and comfortable chairs. Our waiter, Jack, was knowledgeable, friendly, and available, but not intrusive.
We shared two appetizers. The PEI Mussels With Fennel, Tarragon, Tomatoes, and White Wine was a delicious new combo of flavors with plump, tender mussels; delicious. The daily special, charred octopus with garbanzo medley @ $16 was good, but a little over charred for our taste.
Our entrees were; a braised lamb shank with creamy polenta, grilled asparagus, and a red wine braising jus. As expected, great tender, moist lamb on polenta which was a little juicier than desired, and a nice serving of asparagus which was a little chewy. A good, satisfying meal. The second choice was pan-roasted duck breast over chorizo sausage hash with grilled asparagus finished with cilantro chimichurri. A pan-roasted duck breast has nothing in common with a roasted half duck, it is a boneless breast fried with a crisp skin over a thin layer of fat which is served rare. The Oar's was perfect. The chorizo hash was interesting, but, for me, not the best side for the duck. And the same asparagus. I would like to see some optional sides.
Desert was a key lime torte, a sweet, crunchy graham crust on the bottom, thick lemony custard, topped with fresh made whipped cream. The best I have had.
The total cost with tax for two with one wine and two beers was $137.00 not including tip. Definitely worth another visit.
