First visit to a new restaurant
I had heard positive comments about the recently open Oar. My first visit confirmed those comments. This is a small place, and the room I was in is long, narrow, and somewhat cramped looking. It was Saturday evening and they were about 3/4 full. So, it wasn’t too noisy. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. My app, entree, and dessert were very good quality.
The wine list is limited, but adequate. The overall experience was good, but the prices are aggressive. The dinners, a glass of wine, dessert, and tip were over $100, per person , even though no one ordered the higher priced selections. Again, May I repeat that nothing was bad, but there are better options at the price point.
Very Nice Special Occasion Restaurant
This was our 4th visit to The Oar, a newer eatery in Vero Beach. It's tucked into a building on 19th Place with a Spanish courtyard. They probably have less than 20 tables and it reminds us of some of our favorite bistros in NYC. We were two couples.
I ordered the escargot and the swordfish special. The former was disappointing as instead of a buttery and garlicky sauce, the snails were baked under swiss cheese with almost no sauce. I should have ordered the steak tartar. My swordfish went to another table so I ended up with shrimp rissotto. The shrimp were perfectly cooked but there should have been more rice to earn the name rissotto. The other plates were an octopus salad appetizer that was very good, fried green tomatoes smothered in tomato sauce (new to me), mixed green salad, linguini & clams, Italian sausage and a chicken & orichetti in a cream sauce.
With 2 bottles of fairly priced wine and no dessert the bill came to $277 plus tax & tip. While I realize that food costs are sky rocketing, this price was rather high for what we got.
Newer restaurant with interesting menu
The Oar is located in an angular building with 3 entries into an enclosed patio with several dining tables, then a door leads to the casual bar area with about 8 tables and continues through into the main formal dining room with about 15 tables. The decor is contemporary with art and oars on the walls, white cloth tablecloths, and comfortable chairs. Our waiter, Jack, was knowledgeable, friendly, and available, but not intrusive.
We shared two appetizers. The PEI Mussels With Fennel, Tarragon, Tomatoes, and White Wine was a delicious new combo of flavors with plump, tender mussels; delicious. The daily special, charred octopus with garbanzo medley @ $16 was good, but a little over charred for our taste.
Our entrees were; a braised lamb shank with creamy polenta, grilled asparagus, and a red wine braising jus. As expected, great tender, moist lamb on polenta which was a little juicier than desired, and a nice serving of asparagus which was a little chewy. A good, satisfying meal. The second choice was pan-roasted duck breast over chorizo sausage hash with grilled asparagus finished with cilantro chimichurri. A pan-roasted duck breast has nothing in common with a roasted half duck, it is a boneless breast fried with a crisp skin over a thin layer of fat which is served rare. The Oar's was perfect. The chorizo hash was interesting, but, for me, not the best side for the duck. And the same asparagus. I would like to see some optional sides.
Desert was a key lime torte, a sweet, crunchy graham crust on the bottom, thick lemony custard, topped with fresh made whipped cream. The best I have had.
The total cost with tax for two with one wine and two beers was $137.00 not including tip. Definitely worth another visit.
