Rockfish - Exmouth Lympstone Reviews from The Last Year
Poor service
We holidaying down in Devon and booked Rockfish as a treat as we have eaten in your restaurants in both Weymouth and Brixham and we have also had great service. However today the service was disappointing we asked for 2nd portion of chips ( unlimited) and they just never arrived after we asked 3 times. Our 4 year old was getting more and more agitated and wanted to leave so we never got them. I got an apology from one of waitresses but it was only when I suggested could we have some money off that she did this. Really disappointed even more so when there seemed to be lots of people milling around not doing much.
Excellent meal in a beautiful location
We had a table booked for the inside terrace which has the most stunning view of the bay. The staff were all really friendly and smiley and knowledgeable about the fish items on the menu. I had a beautiful whole plaice with new potatoes and spinach with large grilled prawns to start. Couldn’t not be happier with our last meal in town for this year and looking forward to a return trip.
Waitress what waitress?
We have been to the Rockfish Exmouth many times, so we know what the set up is and how good the food is. But today, oh dear me. The food was still excellent, the service, none existent. We had booked for 5pm, nice and early, restaurant was quiet but had a nice atmosphere. Waitress took our drinks order. Then returned for our food order, I ordered the white bait as a starter and the Halibut for a main with the bottomless chips, my wife has celiac disease (no wheat) so ordered a side of spinach for her starter and the cod fillet as her main. No problem you would think. Well. 10 minutes later the same waited came back to ask if we wanted the spinach with the main. No, with the starter please. Then a different waited came and asked what we had ordered. Not just the starter but everything. Then the spinach arrived on its own. No white bait. We waited a minute, then asked the waitress about the white bait. Total confusion on her face, she then took the spinach away. ???? We then had yet another waitress come to the table and ask what had we ordered. Finally the starters arrived, the white bait was spot on, loved every mouthful. And my wife did enjoy her spinach. Now the wait started. We were in no rush and were quite happy to sit and chat. But you know that feeling when you notice other tables all leaving that came in after us, but again, we are in no rush. Eventually (its now 6pm) our mains arrive. And they were perfectly cooked dishes of fish. We enjoyed the food, drank the beer and wine………….. And waited and waited and waited. But again, we were happy, just chatting and watching the world go by. Some time later the table was cleared by a young girl, who really did ‘clear the table’, my wife managed to rescue the wine carafe and the two wine glasses moments before they were whisked away. More time passed, dessert menus were brought to the table. I knew by this time we may have a long wait for the dessert. So, I said to my wife, we will order dessert if they come to take our order before we finish our wine (a good glass full). I bet by now you know what happened? Well. The best is yet to come. The waitress came over to the table and said we needed to leave as they had another booking for our table. ‘But we haven’t ordered our dessert’ I said, Never mind we are happy to leave. So off goes the waitress, us thinking to get the bill, but no, she went to take orders at other tables, all I want is the bill and to pay so they can have the table. But another twist, when she came back she said we could stay longer as the next customers had cancelled. But that was it, no inquiry to see if we wanted the dessert menus back. I really think they thought we just wanted to sit and chat. After two courses and 2 1/2 hours we finally got to pay the bill. As usual the food was first class, and to be fair we had a good laugh with each other about the staff. I don’t blame the waiting staff, I blame the management. Give better training and have a manager on the floor keeping an eye on proceedings. And don’t worry Rockfish we will come back again. We love fresh fish too much.
Great fish restaurant.
Excellent in every respect. Husband required very plain fish meal with no sauces, etc. served beautifully and met all dietary requirements. Attentive, courteous service. Ample room for our golden retriever. Good value for money. Wonderful sea views.
Great location
A beautiful terrace overlooking the sea on an "unusually" sunny day... The fish offering is varied and you are spoiled for choice. We opt for two mixed fried foods, quite good but really small portions. The highlight is the sharing plate of "fruits de mer": we are honestly told that we have to wait about 40 minutes, in the end an hour and a quarter passes before tasting the dish which, ultimately, is good but nothing of excellent. The oysters are good, the prawns are quite good but some are tiny and almost impossible to open, mussels are normal, clams are also not... The price of the dish is really too high, we are at the level of a crudité plate... Apart this, the restaurant overall deserves.
Thank you to all the team at Rockfish for an excellent supper.
Outstanding. What an outlook! And the Rockfish team are superb: the service is so professional and friendly. Then the fish and seafood are brilliantly prepared, and the menu has interesting variations on traditional offerings. Special thanks to the Manager, Jess: and to the waiter who served us this evening, Aravindh. My advice: go. But book in advance.
As good as always has been
Love this place. Great location with best view from tables at indoor terrace .Best cockles ever and tinned sardines recommended. Halibut very good. The staff are attentive- special thanks to Steve-great attitude
Lovely Sunday lunch
Lunch on the covered terrace on a perfect sunny day. Warm welcome from Stephen into a buzzy restaurant. Although very early for our booking we were quickly seated and our waitress Tilly was brilliant. Delicious dover sole cooked to perfection. Can’t wait to return .
Somewhat disappointed
As always we looked forward to our meal. We visit reasonably regularly but today was a disappointment. I had the line caught haddock. Reasonable quality but not a very big portion. Yes, I know, the weight is given on the menu but it is difficult to equate raw weight with eventual cooked size. All in all a bit of a 'rip off'. My local fish and chip shop in Ottery St Mary in my view offers a superior product at much less than half the price albeit for a take away. Rockfish today was also very noisy with a large party containg several pre-school children at the next table and why do Rockfish have that constant piped music? Lastly there were several dogs in the Restaurant. They were well behaved but in my view dogs do not belong in restaurants.....
Another Rockfish Triumph
The food at a the Rockfish restaurants is consistently very high and the service very good. Dinner at Rockfish Exmouth tonight was no different. We were greeted quickly, our waiter Steven was friendly, professional and efficient. The woman busing our table less so. All the other patrons - and it was busy - seemed happy and loving their food too. I love Rockfish as a brand and know I can always count on it.
