Perla Philadelphia Reviews from The Last Year
To eat at Perla is to surrender yourself to an absolute
To eat at Perla is to surrender yourself to an absolute feeding frenzy. This is one of those places that does a small number of things, does them all drool-inducingly well, and doesn't both with much else. You go to Perla and get the Perla meal, just like you would at, say, Marrakesh. But you get that because they know the kitchen knocks it out of the park. What is the Perla meal? Garlic rice, vegetables in a light, non-spicy "curry" sauce, lumpia, wonderfully tender roasted chicken leg/lechon manok, a massive hunk of bone-in pork, a whole fish, and desert. It's all laid out on the table in front of you, with the rice topped with the vegetables and then everything else laid on. And then you use your bare hands to just tear into it and gorge yourself. Obviously this isn't something to go to with people you've just met, given the utensil-less nature of the experience. But with close friends or a partner you're not trying to impress with decorum, this is a highly rewarding feast. I found that, as I went, I really was in something of a frenzy, reaching out and pulling back something delicious to stuff my mouth with with the aplomb of someone who'd just wandered in out of the desert not having eaten a real meal in a few days. Everything they brought out him for me, but if I'm assigning highlight status, I'd give it to the chicken, rice, vegetables, and fish. I was also pleasantly surprised that the desert was a chilled mousse and almond slivers, rather than popular Filipino desert standard halo halo, which I've never really developed much fondness for.
Such good food for such a great price! Nothing feels more
Such good food for such a great price! Nothing feels more celebratory than digging your fingers into rice and deep fried pork belly. They started us off with this bread roll that was deliciously sweet and soft, then followed it up with a heaping pile of fish, pork belly, chicken, and lumpia. There were also curried veggies. I thought the chicken was a bit salty but the rest of the food was excellent, especially when paired with the sauces that were given. My favorite was the whole fish, which came off in tender flaky pieces. It definitely needed the vinegar sauce but was absolutely delicious combined with that and the fragrant garlic rice. Service was also prompt, and we got hand wipes to clean our hands before the dessert of coconut chocolate pudding. I left stuffed and the two of us had two big boxes of leftovers that we brought home too. For the $50 pp price, this can't be beat!
Such an authentic Filipino food experience.
You get tons of food for the price and the fried fish is simply delicious!
Good experience with very attentive staff.
A lot of food is given and it was super fun eating with our hands! You get messy eating kamayan style. My favorite part of the meal is the curry rice which was very flavorful. However the meats were a bit dry and took a bit to chew. The fish was very tender and flakey. I came with a friend, and we barely made a dent. I'd definitely recommend coming with a few friends or you'll be leaving with lots of leftovers
Amazing experience in Philly!!! Great food, service,
Amazing experience in Philly!!! Great food, service, vibes!!! Nothing like it anywhere else!!!
I hold this place near and dear to my heart.
It's my #1 restaurant in Philly simply because of the service. It's a small dining area and the people there make all customers feel welcome. I go here at least twice a month and the food never disappoints! 10/10 would recommend, especially if you're into BYOB.
Experience/Ambiance:4; Food:2; Service:4; Value:2.
It's definitely a different experience to get everything served directly on the table (on banana leaves) and eat with hands. Everything is family style so you don't order, it's served based on number of people, all the same food - grilled chicken, crispy pork belly (supposedly), whole fish, grilled veggies, garlic rice, and dessert (chocolate pudding). We were very excited about the experience, the execution was very disappointing... First of all meats came out extremely dry and flavorless... The pork belly supposed to be crispy skin, but the whole thing was hard as rock, we couldn't bite into it, so we asked for knives (supposedly you are to not use utensils), but there's no way we can eat a big piece of uncut rock. Even the knife was too dull to cut through it... The chicken halves were also super dry and flavorless (except for char grill and salt taste). The fish was the only acceptable/edible texture, but still somewhat overcooked. They have 3 sauces for the meats but they are just ketchup, pickled pepper juice, and some kinda red wine vinegar, none was good enough to help with flavoring! The only good seasoned and well cooked items were the veggies (beans, cauliflowers, eggplants, brussel sprouts). They gave you a boat load of garlic rice, which was kinda mushy, very wasteful. Their sweet bread was pretty good, but you can only get one per person (golf ball size) and not allowed to ask for more! The chocolate pudding was too dense and somewhat sour, very weird tasting. The quality of food vs price point were just disappointing... Overall I respect the idea to showcase and experience the Philippinno family style meal, but the execution was very poor, I doubt it represented the Philippinno cuisines at all.
Top notch! Always impressed with the quality and

Paid almost $400 for 2 half chicken , 2 fries fish, some
Paid almost $400 for 2 half chicken , 2 fries fish, some spring roll, a piece of Fried pork thigh, some sautéed vegetable and some rice. Over priced restaurant! Everything was so dry , it's seems like they fry over and over again . I dont know how this place get 4.5 star but this place is nothing special, the restaurant look interesting with the banana leaf on the table that's why we decided to try but it's so disappointed. Foods is nothing other than bunch of fry stuff which you can get easily at the supermarket. $50 / person plus tax . As you can see in the picture the chicken is burn (dark black) the rice was not cooked through, the spring roll was not crispy at all. We came in the table of 5 adult and a kid. Our bill came out to almost $400 . ( all the food is on the picture) They charge us $30 plus tax for the kid. But it's seem like we didn't get any extra food for her. The next table to us has 5 adult and they got the same amount of food we have. So we paid extra for my daughter just to have her come to sit with us? Be aware that They also added $60 tip in my bill which I didn't know. While we were there no body come and ask if the food was ok, until we asked for the box togo. After i left the restaurant, I called them right away concerned about the bill and the amount of food we got, the told me that she would have someone call me back, a week later nothing, i called them again the same server picked up and ask if i want to talk to the manager, she gave the phone to someone else and he didn't not know what was happening( so I waited all that time for nothing? ) So i have to talk to him all over again hope that he would give me some answers, but he said the transaction is done, it's nothing he can do and he is not even the manager or owner. ,( but I called them right after I left) he told me if I'm not satisfied with the service, I can go on online and give them a review. How terrible customer service is that. Seem like they dont care about the customer's satisfaction . I also noticed that the other table dine-in with 2 they get half of our food. I dont know how they operate the restaurant. If you sell by portion, then you should give the customer what they pay for. This is not fair for everyone. I work close by and will tell all my clients not to come here. The worst experience I ever have.
This is an experience that you should have at least once in
This is an experience that you should have at least once in your life, especially since this isn't a meal that you'll find in very many places either (prior reservations are required though). I had heard about Perla a long time ago and only recently got the chance to go, and it did not disappoint. Service was amazing, and our waitress was very patient and explained what exactly the different foods were and how best to enjoy it all. The food was so delicious and nothing like the Filipino food I've tried before; it was a feast of massive proportion (we had a lot of leftovers) consisting of garlic fried rice, mixed veggies, 2 legs of chicken, 4 super juicy pork belly strips, 1 fried fish, and a lot of lumpia with a variety of different sauces like banana ketchup and chili vinegar. Dessert was a creamy chocolate almond mousse that wasn't too sweet and was surprisingly light. Every aspect of the meal was outstanding (more than worth the money ~$60 including tax and tip), and I would love the chance to go back.
