We found this place easily enough on a main business section of Oakland directly across from Caltrans’ Fruitvale Station. Lots of ethic food businesses but this Cambodian establishment has been around and has steadily gathered widespread critical acclaim being written about in the NY Times, Bon Appetit, and was nominated as a 2019 James Beard Award semifinalist. This is a very modest eatery with the silverware in a container on each table and unpadded chairs meant to facilitate turnover and not to spend time lingering. There’s a sign-up sheet at the entrance where lines can form awaiting seating. We came on a weekday when their doors open at 11:30 and didn’t have to wait. Some Yelp reviewers have criticized the service and while for us it did seem slow, we assumed that they may have been ramping up in the kitchen.
As for the food. We had kuy teav phnom penh - garlic pork broth with thin beef slices and thin white noodles, and koh - carmelized pork belly with spicy bamboo shoots on rice. Both were fantastic. Flavorful and satisfying. If you not familiar with SE Asian cuisine, you should be wowed. Serious Asian foodies downplay that the food is not impressive compared to some common eateries on the streets of Phnom Penh but that gives cred to how authentic and impressive it is to produce such dishes here in the SF East Bay.
If you are here on the weekend, stop in early to order amok, the traditional steamed catfish in curry. It’s only available until the fish are gone and only on the weekends.
