Disappointing
I was excited to eat at a restaurant with a cook who came from the La Cocina program and to eat Cambodian food. We started with the prahok ktiss which was delicious and served with a variety of vegetables to dip, however the cucumbers were cut into wedges which made it difficult to scoop. Next we had the caramelized pork belly which was hard, dry and needed more sauce; and the stir fried noodles. The noodles were okay. We saw many orders of the fried chicken so added one at the end and it was delicious, crunchy and moist. The service was terrible, our waiter was knowledgeable about the food but provided no service. The first thing we ordered was water and beer, then food. The first dish came and we were really thirsty so were asked for water again. Five minutes out waiter passed by and we again asked for water. Out main dishes arrived and we again asked for water. I noticed our server standing at one end of the restaurant chatting with one table. After five minutes (by this time I was checking my watch). I finally got up and walked over and asked for water. A woman at the table said you can have ours we won’t drink it. By that time we had been in the restaurant for one hour. The server at the next table was so efficient that when we decided to add an order of fried chicken we asked him and it arrived quickly. The service was so bad and the food hit and miss so I don’t see any reason to return.

We found this place easily enough on a main business section of Oakland directly across from Caltrans’ Fruitvale Station. Lots of ethic food businesses but this Cambodian establishment has been around and has steadily gathered widespread critical acclaim being written about in the NY Times, Bon Appetit, and was nominated as a 2019 James Beard Award semifinalist. This is a very modest eatery with the silverware in a container on each table and unpadded chairs meant to facilitate turnover and not to spend time lingering. There’s a sign-up sheet at the entrance where lines can form awaiting seating. We came on a weekday when their doors open at 11:30 and didn’t have to wait. Some Yelp reviewers have criticized the service and while for us it did seem slow, we assumed that they may have been ramping up in the kitchen.
As for the food. We had kuy teav phnom penh - garlic pork broth with thin beef slices and thin white noodles, and koh - carmelized pork belly with spicy bamboo shoots on rice. Both were fantastic. Flavorful and satisfying. If you not familiar with SE Asian cuisine, you should be wowed. Serious Asian foodies downplay that the food is not impressive compared to some common eateries on the streets of Phnom Penh but that gives cred to how authentic and impressive it is to produce such dishes here in the SF East Bay.
If you are here on the weekend, stop in early to order amok, the traditional steamed catfish in curry. It’s only available until the fish are gone and only on the weekends.
Very Popular, but just not worth it
We waited ~ 30 minutes for our seat. The restaurant is tidy. The service was pleasant. The tea, which was to complementary, never came. What surprised me was that although the ingredients were very inexpensive, the prices were high and portions small.
An example, the “fried chicken “ was just 8 chicken wings!!! What a surprise!! Fried chicken? Really!!! Why just tell people that they are just to get chicken wings?
The other dishes were OK ... small
I don’t understand the hype... won’t return
Yummy Fried Chicken
We went here for a birthday dinner! We got a range of dishes but the best was definitely the fried chicken with ginger sauce. I mean, you can’t go wrong with perfectly crispy fried chicken, but their ginger sauce definitely takes it up a notch.
Generally, the food was good, although I found it to be a little over seasoned for my preference. The other really good dish was the fried catfish. This dish was delicious and our group devoured it in a matter of minutes. Good beer too.
Awesome Cambodian Food in Oakland!
Came here on Sunday close to 7PM and I'm glad we did after hearing and reading about the hype! The restaurant closes at 8 pm on Sunday but we needed to physically be there to put...

Thanks to the Chronicle for alerting us to this wonderful restaurant. It is unpretentious and tiny but serves up amazing food. Very close to the Fruitvale Bart Station. We went for a late weekday lunch and did not have to wait. Will definitely return. One of us had shaken beef and the other had noodles with shrimp. Flavors are intense and food is very fresh and beautiful.
Be the first to ReplySmall, hip Cambodian restaurant in the Fruitvale district, a diverse destination
Wonderful noodle soups and rice plates with a great selection of draft beers. Go early or be prepared to wait as it is popular. When the weather is warm, think about one of the outside tables.

Nyum Bai is in the Fruitvale Station area. You can jump right off of Bart and be within a 100 steps of the place. Be forewarned, it's tiny and you may wind up sitting outside but the company is good and the atmosphere lively. If you go at night, many people park for free in the BART structure across the street. We went because of a review in a foodie magazine which praised it to the skies. It IS great for what it is. The tastes are bright and fresh without being overwhelmingly spicy. We had the Lok Lak, a shaken beef dish and the chicken Kuri and shared a bowl of noodle soup. The noodles were excellent and so was the curry. Won't order the shaken beef dish not because it wasn't very good but because I love the Shaken Beef from Slanted Door in SF more. The people next to us highly recommended the pork belly. They have beer but we noticed that several people had brought in their own wine. If you want dessert, Powder is just across the way and serves great beignets. Oh, the pinata store right beside the restaurant had a Trump and a red Lambo pinata. Enjoy. Oh we had to wait about 20 minutes for a table. They weren't taking reservations at the time we went. If you can't get in try Reems in the same complex. It was appeared in a national mag as one of the best new restaurants. You can't lose by going to Fruitvale (and do take the BART, it's just too convenient.

Met up with friends here after seeing them on the Zimmer List show. They don’t take reservations, basically put your name on the list and wait. We waited more than an hour after arriving about 30 minutes after they opened for dinner, limited seating for larger groups so recommend party of no more than 6.
Food was very tasty highly recommend the dry rub chicken appetizer! Yummy! The Pork Belly dish was amzaing as well.
The people were very nice and made excellent recommendations. Definitely a place to go back to.
Wonderful flavors!
REALLY enjoyed our meal. Fabulous flavors and fresh ingredients. Fast service and prompt delivery. Atmosphere is just okay. Very small restaurant so expect a wait to be seated. Pleasant surroundings to wait for table. I would dine here again
