😍 5/5 - The truer part of contemporary

The most memorable experiences on trips for me have always been the unplanned delights. Marisol certainly fits that category. One look at the menu had us anticipating the restaurant's dinner hours while we lingered in the coffee shop section in the front, which serves very high quality tea and delicately sweetened scones (be sure to brew the Silver Needle White Tea for 4 minutes the first time and 5.5 minutes the second time). I asked for 2 cups so I can pour all of the tea at once and not let it oversteep.
For dinner, we shared the Marisol Salad. It was served like a tower of leaves, with each butter leaf of lettuce perfectly fresh. The thinly sliced green apple added crunch and a splash of freshness, but the extra touch here was the dressing which was applied to every layer so that you never found yourself biting into a dry leaf.
For main courses, we ordered Fried Quail and Tri-Tip. If the concept of fried brings up an image of fried chicken, don't let it. The fried sections of quail were more like sunkissed bits of crunch on a juicy bird. Not only was the meat moist but the sauce made it lovely for savoring. If you're not used to eating quail, expect small pieces of bone-in bird, but the portion size was perfect for my sense of satiety.
As someone who avoids desserts, I could not pass up the chance here because I expected it would be worth every gram of sugar. I ordered the buckwheat cake. I'm so glad I did. My husband, who doesn't eat sugar, ordered roasted carrot salad for dessert and found it a perfect alternative.
Marisol was a discovery we won't soon forget and will add to our list of destination restaurants when we're in downtown Chicago.
