As advertised definitely one of the best Burgers in NYC .
But .... Before , you got to get their focaccia, it's that good and with that fantastic burrata a perfect start . Then that excellent burger , done perfectly and I loved the tops combination, though avoid the fries in my humble opinion taking the greatness of the burger . Very nice , cosy neighborhoody space with great service . If around that Brooklyn hood, it's a must !
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food and amazing service.
Cocktails are great. Good wine list. The lamb loin is so good but also so is the pasta. The pasta with chick peas was shockingly good. Love this place.
Be the first to ReplyWow what a great experience! We came here with a work group
Wow what a great experience! We came here with a work group of about 10 guests during the week. It was empty when we arrived but the ambience was still warm, cozy, and inviting. The service was excellent. Nick did a great job of waiting on the table, making sure we always had our water and wine full, and being close by whenever we needed him. The menu is simple, but perfect if you're coming here for steak (we even had one person order fish and they enjoyed it). We had the oysters and focaccia as an appetizer--holy bread! The focaccia is good. For dinner we ended up having a few of every cut of meat based on how the group ordered: NY strip, hanger, ribeye for 2, and the lamb. Each one was OUTSTANDING. The meat was cooked very well, seasoned simply, and had all of its natural flavors enhanced by fresh sea salt. (Note: each steak (except for the lamb) was pre-sliced when it was served. It surprised me, but was still excellent tasting and didn't modify the taste). This is definitely a hidden gem. I hope others find it and can enjoy it like we did.
Be the first to ReplyI would give this place zero stars if I could.
It was the worst steak I've ever had. Perhaps the dry aging process they used went wrong but the steak delivered to our table looked and tasted like grilled runber. We sent it back and they were kind enough to remove it from the bill. The other food was extremely salty and nothing different from chain restaurants. Go elsewhere, even if it's an Outback.

I know Gus has a lot of good reviews, but we were quite disappointed at the Sunday roast. The ambience is dark, really dark, which makes it hard to see what is on your plate. Both my prime rib ($75) and my wife's strip steak were way too fatty. I understand beef needs to be marbled to have good taste but my wife;s steak was "marbled" with what I'd say was 50% fat, and the prime rib was at least half fat; at least the fat could be cut off of the prime rib. The Prime rib was supposed to come with horseradish sauce; there was none. Don't ask for iced tea or even a cup of coffee as they don't have them. And to boot the service was lackadaisical.

We didn't make a reservation, and waited 30 minutes and they want us to sit at the bar? So why didn't they offer us any of the four empty bar seats when we first walked in? We did get a table so all good. Vibe and service were the best thing. Cute neighborhood restaurant with a young hip crowd and everyone seem enjoying their time here. Food was fine, New York strip was excellent but I wish I order the larger size. I was hungry afterwards. Pork porterhouse skip this. I would come back for drinks and vibes only.

Let me start this review by saying that I really wanted to like this place. The same staff owns nearby Italian restaurant Popina (which I love and has one of the best Chicken Milanese dishes in the entire city.) My neighbors had cautioned me that Gus' was fairly mediocre but I wanted to try for myself. Sadly, I should have heeded their warnings. The ambience and decor are nothing to write home about. It's a plain white box of a restaurant with no style, comfort, or sense of decor. But the worst is the acoustics. For a place that holds about 75 people, the noise is atrocious. Good luck having a nice romantic dinner here. Now, onto the menu - a culinary exploration of the word "meh." The cuts of meat are nowhere near the quality you'd get in a top steakhouse and, as others have mentioned, the restaurant's approach to seasoning could best be described as "when in doubt, add more salt." The "famed" pork chop was 25% fat and gristle (and did I mention the salt?). The NY strip was poorly marbled and overcooked. The shitake mushrooms were a creamy mess. And the leeks were strangely dressed with blue cheese. Kudos for the fries and the Warm Tomato Vinaigrette & Sourdough. Those were the highlights of the meal. Service was highly mediocre. None of the servers seemed happy to be there. I think we saw our waiter once after our meal was served and before we asked for the check. Might go back and try the burger (but with Red Hook Tavern only about a mile away, there might never be a need.)

Food was excellent! Steak for 2 was cooked perfectly medium rare! The sides were delicious as well! You must try Gus's!

Just tried their new takeout menu for dinner - we loved it! The chicken sandwich is crispy and tender (and spicy!), the potato burger was super flavorful and filling, and the oatmeal cookie is massive and fresh. 10/10 recommend.
Be the first to ReplyI'd rate Gus's four and a half stars.
Romantic steakhouse great for a special occasion. Lighting is dim and table are spaced apart creating an intimate atmosphere. One of the most extensive wine lists that I've come across with a nice selection of wines by the glass. Solid offering of craft beers, and some good options for whiskeys and mezcals. We arrived on a Wednesday night at 8:30 and were seated immediately. I had a glass of Teroldego and then a Zinfandel. My wife had a custom cocktail and was very happy with it. We started with the hash brown topped with a creamy sauce and smoked roe. This was one of our favorite dishes. They were super crispy and I liked how the roe stood out in the dish. This was served alongside the Leeks a la wedge. I believe the leeks were served with crispy, shoestring thin onions and a blue cheese sauce. I'm not a fan of blue cheese but this dish might have been the first step in converting me. For the main course, we shared the creamed spinach, the eggplant tikka masala, and the ribeye. Creamed spinach was great. Another one our favorites. The eggplant was unique. The texture of the eggplant came out firm and reminded me more of a baked potato. We had the rib-eye cooked medium rare as the staff recommended. It came out more on the rare side. We sent a few of the pieces that were very rare back for a little extra time on the grill, and the staff was very courtesy about it. All in all, service was super attentive and accommodating. Some of the best service you'll find at a casual leaning restaurant. They had indoor and some outdoor seating. There were two gender neutral restrooms. The one I used was pretty spacious and the other appeared to be spacious too.

Made a last minute reservation on a Saturday night and was able to get a table for 8:45pm. Went with a group so we ordered the salad and eggplant tiki masala as an appetizer. Salad was tossed a Dijon vinaigrette which was a nice touch, eggplant was cooked perfectly and the tiki masala sauce was a unique combination. Also got the ribeye for two which was a whopping $150, excellent quality of meat but a bit salty and very expensive for the size of steak you get in my opinion. Shared the flatiron which was also good quality but at a much more affordable price point. The surprise star of the meal was the burger, the flavor of the beef really stands out. The burger is smothered with sweet onions which are amazing and it comes with a side of fries and aioli. Crème brûlée was also excellent. Ambiance is along the lines of casual steakhouse.

I live locally in Red Hook and the Gus Burger is definitely the best in the area. High quality meat and plenty of it. The carmelized onions and cornichons add a delicious and distinct flavor. My only knock on tbe place is that they did not clearly advertise their happy hour. They had a large sign out front saying $10 wine and there was no time specified. I sat down at 630 and they me after the fact that happy hour ended at 6 and charged me $17 telling me "better luck next time". At least the wine was good but not cool. I will go back at some point but i hope they improve the service
Be the first to ReplyMy partner and I had a wonderful meal here a few weeks ago.
The space is elegant and modern without feeling pretentious. We started with the Leeks a la Wedge, which was flavorful and had an interesting mix of textures. Then we shared the Pork Porterhouse and Dry Aged Beef NY Strip along with the Hashbrown and Brussels Sprouts. Everything was delicious and very well cooked. I particularly enjoyed the Porterhouse. I originally thought that we might've ordered too much food, but I was wrong because we ended up eating pretty much all of it. I would like to try the burger next time, which I've heard great things about. However, it's only available at the bar. This is a great neighborhood spot, worth checking out! Service was friendly, attentive, and informative.

Sat at the bar for a Friday night meal and am happy to report the hits definitely hit. The pork shoulder was out of this world, melted like butter. The leeks a la wedge was a total flavor explosion, definitely the most surprising. The smoked trout hash brown was great, really comforting and the bites with the roe were perfect. The chocolate olive oil cake was pretty light and airy and the hazelnuts gave it a nice crunch - solid dessert. And of course the drinks, the penicillin particularly, were well done. Only miss was the burger which was a special of the night - kind of was more like a meatloaf on a bun - skip it. Great evening all around!
Be the first to ReplyThis is an excellent neighborhood restaurant to have nearby
This is an excellent neighborhood restaurant to have nearby if you love delicious twists on the classics, and have plenty of dollars. It's not a place I could eat at regularly, but it certainly is a place I'd like to eat at regularly.I met a couple friends for dinner. We were supposed to be four, but one guy dropped out with COVID, and the hostess and I agreed it was his loss, because Gus's just offers quality across the board.Cocktails:They have plenty of well-executed classics (like the Penicillin), or slight twists on the classics (i.e. the Black Manhattan). I went for the Campfire Old Fashioned, because it has rye, bourbon, and scotch, and sometimes you just need all the booze. We also found a nice bottle of wine because I heard mixing wine and liquor is a good move.Snacks and Appetizers:It may be a chop house, but they do well with the vegetables. We shared a few of the smaller plates, including the shrimp cocktail (a fine version), the cauliflower (quite good), the carrots (stunning, really, with chili and chevre), the leeks a la wedge (my favorite of them all). Those small plates fall just under $20 however, and they add up.Steaks & Chops:I couldn't dissuade my fancy friends from springing for the steak special of the evening, and in their defense, it was very good. That said, the Pork Porterhouse was one of the most delicious things I've eaten in quite some time, and it is far more affordable...and still a giant hunk of meat just laid on a plate. The perfect execution of something so simple is appealing, and that pork is what I'm going for when I come back. Overall, I want Gus's to be about 15% more affordable so I can come back on the regular, but I very much understand the cost of doing business in this neighborhood, so I understand why it is not (and why homes are not as well). I plan to return when I can.
Be the first to ReplyFive stars for me for this fabulous neighborhood place.
You'll want to eat at the bar, not only because it has a lovely vibe and excellent bartender, but also because there are several bar-only special such as the burger. Do. Not. Miss. the. Burger. I look forward to trying the bar-only steak frites next time. We had a scrumptious potato appetizer and the soda bread, both are amazing. I had a martini and a Manhattan, both excellent. It's a great spot for the hood and reminds me a lot of the late great James. If you want your meat done right, along with a stiff cocktail like they did in the olden days, don't hesitate on popping in to Gus's.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food, great service and fantastic value.
Somewhat of a gem in NYC's dining scene and will look to become a regular.

I had an amazing meal at Gus's Chop House this weekend! I emailed them in advance to see if I could eat there due to having celiacs disease. They sent me the loveliest thorough email back, so I went that night with my mom. She had a great cocktail and their wine selection was specific and not overwhelming. The Nebbiolo Boniperti was perfect for my meal. We had the shrimp cocktail, Carrots, Chèvre, Chili, Hazelnuts, Citrus, Brussels Sprouts Fondue, Fries and Aioli (gf fryer!), and the stars were the two meats- Pork Porterhouse and Pork Shoulder. SO good. All of it. The service was excellent and great about letting me know what I could and could not eat. A nice addition to the neighborhood - I look forward to becoming a regular!
Be the first to ReplyLet me say the staff was great, super nice, and attentive.
The ambiance and interior is neat. Now onto the food...it was quite bad to say the least. Our favorite part were the fries and even they weren't amazing especially for $12. Legitimately everything we had was WAY too salty and I'm someone that enjoys salt, but when that's all you taste, something is wrong. The steak we got was served rare despite asking for medium rare, that and the fact the cut was just not high quality and had tons of fat and any meat we did get tasted like straight salt. I wanted this place to be good and have a nice local spot in the neighborhood, but we will not be back when all of the food missed the mark.
Be the first to ReplyThis was the best meal I've had in a looong time.
Wow. The meat was delicious, great sides and dessert. I can't wait to go back
Be the first to ReplyNice restaurant in Carroll Gardens.
Steak was very tasty and tender and fries were good too. Service was also very friendly and informative when asking questions about how certain items are prepared. My only complaint is the bread charge, which I wouldn't have minded if I was given a heads up. As soon as I sat down the waiter asked if I wanted bread and I said yes without realizing there was a charge until the bill came. I've been to restaurants that charge for bread before and I don't normally mind it because the bread is usually good but a heads up would have been nice.
Be the first to Reply1) Staff is lovely and try hard.
