Very disappointing
Lovely ambience & staff but…. sadly, nothing was a “wow”, interesting or delicious. The shrimp & tilefish tasted “old”, even “off”, the potted radish was off putting. Charleston has SO many fabulous restaurants, this is not in that league. Head to Lowland Tavern for mouth watering and innovative or SNOB!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food
Me and my wife loved this place on our recent visit to Charleston. We choose to do the tasting menu we are so happy we did. The food was all amazing. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable of everything. We will surely return to this restaurant again next time we are in Charleston it’s a must go
Be the first to ReplyAn Experience Not To Be Repeated
This is a dining experience you will not forget nor would we repeat. The food was well presented but over the top. Zero is impressed with itself, the staff demonstrates it in their demeanor, and the cost. Multiple small courses (I think about 12).
Be the first to ReplyAn experience!
This was an experience! We went as a group of girls arranged by a friend, not knowing what to expect. I believe we had 13 courses, all intricately prepared and explained to us. Most of them absolutely delicious! It was a pricey night but worth the experience. Very cute ambience.
Be the first to ReplyRushed... the experience is more than simply the food consumption!
The staff were all exceptionally friendly and accommodating. The food was beautiful and the tasting menu was an eclectic palate teaser for sure! The wine pairings were lovely… (Except the one cider we didn’t like that one.) I would’ve loved to give this restaurant 5 stars but I am only giving it 4. Both my partner and I left, feeling extremely rushed throughout our entire meal, to the point of having indigestion. For the high price tag on this experience, we felt extremely rushed. I understand that the food was coming out at set times but strongly encourage the chef to consider making it a three hour experience rather than two. We added the caviar experience on ($45 each), as I absolutely adore caviar. The way it was served was a dollop on our hand and it became a caviar shooter! Not an enjoyable way to do caviar we would prefer to take small bites and enjoy sipping on vodka rather than doing it like a tequila shot! Interesting experience, but again felt like we were just being rushed so they can get the next plates on the table. I do not recommend adding the caviar onto the tasting menu due to this approach. They do not give you extra time they just make you consume quicker. We were never without food on the table or drinks. They just kept bringing more and we didn't even have time to finish what we had before us. We spent close to $1,000 just for the two of us. This experience could’ve been outstanding, but we both left feeling a little disappointed for the rushed feeling of the entire 2 hours and 20 minutes. Again, I strongly recommend making the experience longer, allowing people to enjoy the moment and process their food in between servings.

Great tasting menu. The breakfasts were also superb. Staff were friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere was quiet and sedate.
Be the first to ReplyMust try Charleston experience.
Excellent meal in a small intimate setting. Tasting menu was exceptional, well on par with two and three star Michelin experiences that we have enjoyed. What made the night even better was the entire staff, all of whom took time to explain the unique courses and also visited for short periods between courses offering information about the town and other venues we should try. This showed confidence in their own fare and made the overall evening even better. Kudos as well to the chefs for the fresh choices and fantastic techniques displayed throughout the meal.
Be the first to ReplyGot sick after eating quail eggs
I got violently ill from the quail eggs. I was certain they were the culprit since my husband did not eat them. I ran to bathroom after 4th course. Manager was told and was not very nice.
Be the first to ReplyA Great and Creative Meal
This was our third trip to Zero Restaurant and Bar. I would very highly recommend this place with two caveat (which aisle detail below parentheses. While expensive, it is a true culinary experience; every bit as good or better than many of the highest rated restaurants in New York City and cheaper. The setting is charming, although I would strongly recommend eating outside rather than inside, weather permitting. The staff is extremely friendly, attentive, and professional. The chef is extremely inventive, but even the most unusual dishes just taste good! (unlike some restaurants where inventiveness eclipses taste). For wine lovers, I would recommend getting the accompanying glasses of wine. We have always gotten the lower priced option (of two). The wines have always been good, and chosen carefully to accompany each course (even sake to accompany a Japanese-oriented course-great match!). Now for the caveats: the kitchen is unwilling to vary the courses depending upon food dislikes. This has not posed a problem for me, but has on each occasion we have dined there resulted in my wife not eating a course or part of a course. As there is always cumulatively a good deal of food, and as she does not have a huge appetite, this has not been a problem for us, but it might be for some. Second, as others have indicated, this is not a place to go if you do not have several hours to enjoy and savor the food. I believe that the pacing of the presentation of the courses is good, but the sheer number of courses means a long meal Overall, this is an excellent culinary experience. For devoted foodies, this is a must-do in Charleston
Be the first to ReplyA celebration for the palate
What an experience and palate celebration! Every bite was excellent not only in terms of taste but also visually. The server asked which one was my favorite but I simply couldn’t pick one because there was so much heavenly food. The tuna tartare cigar was definitely one of the best appetizers I’ve ever had. The atmosphere, service, and overall experience were outstanding.
Be the first to ReplySpectacular Culinary Experience
The whole experience of the tasting menu at Zero was nothing short of spectacular. The food was delicious, inventive, and beautifully presented. The service was among the best we have ever experienced. The venue was lovely. Everything about this dining experience was memorable and delightful.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible
One of the best dinners I’ve ever had. We did the 7 course tasting menu and everything was next level. The starter snacks alone blew us away. Each dish was unique and amazing and best venison I’ve ever had.
Be the first to ReplyUnique, Delicious and Fun
Excellent experience! We were full by our 3rd course. The presentation was incredibly unique and added to the whole experience. Then layer into the experience that each bite was DELICIOUS! The team was intentional and we were never left without some part of the experience being brought to us. Drinks were well paired and suggestions appreciated. This was a few hours of dining experience and fun discussion inducing foods. Worth the cost and time.
Be the first to ReplyReally wanted to love this meal but was underwhelmed by the flavors
First let me say, the restaurant's atmosphere, staff, and service was fantastic. This review does not reflect them at all. I loved the bar area, the cocktails were delicious and unique, the staff were warm and very helpful, and the service was great. I was incredibly disappointed by the food. The presentations were great but I felt that the flavors and food itself was overcomplicated by the presentations at times. Though the dishes were pretty, the flavors of every course was just average. Not one dish sticks out to me for flavor, nothing was bad per se, but nothing memorable either. The only thing I thought was excellent was the caviar that was an upcharge on an already very expensive tasting menu. For the price this meal was absolutely not worth it and I will not be back. There are many more fine dining experiences in Charleston with much better food and most at a much more reasonable price.

Incredible dining experience, Amazing staff and very thought out menu. We sat outside and had a great time. Every dish was just as good as the last. My favorite was the empanadas.
Be the first to ReplyBeat culinary experience I’ve ever had
We had an outstanding experience enjoying the tasting menu at Zero Restaurant. Each course was incredible. I have eaten at restaurants by James Beard winning chefs and ones with Michelin stars. But this was the singularly finest culinary experience I have ever had. I especially enjoyed the blueberry oysters, the complex and bright tomato dish with nori, the salmon on artichoke purée, and the sorbet which was delightful. The wine pairings were excellent - elevating both the dishes and wines themselves. The most notable in my memory were the Rose and Chenin Blanc (even though I typically get more excited for reds.). We finished our meal with a tres leches with honeycomb (which lent a fascinating umami to the dish) and a delightful Blue Run bourbon. The staff were knowledgeable, hospitable, passionate, inspiring in their commitment to fine food, and eager to converse at length, especially our sommalier Mark and the wildly talented food and beverage director, Megan. Bravo!
Be the first to ReplyBest Birthday Present 🎁 🎁
What a memorable experience! I took my husband here for his birthday and he is STILL talking about it weeks later. Each course was beautifully executed and the creativity was off the charts. We added wine pairings to our experience, as well as the wagyu beef upgrade-- what a treat! Our server, Ray, was fun and elevated the entire dining experience. The entire team at Zero made their way to our table at some point, either dropping off food or running drinks-- all were delightful. We sat outside and I was surprised how breezy and cool the patio was (especially in the middle of July!). I ended up getting eaten up by mosquitos, but I'll know to spray myself for next time :) We look forward to making a return trip to Zero the next time we visit Charleston!
Be the first to ReplyWonderful in every way!
Where do I begin - from the service to the food everything was beyond our expectations! It was such an amazing experience! Be prepared to be wowed!!
Be the first to ReplyIncredible evening
I can’t begin to describe how wonderful our dining experience was at Zero. The creativity of Chef Vinson Petrillo is amazing. Everyone should have the opportunity to eat here. It was that good. My taste buds were taken on an incredible journey with combinations of ingredients that I would never have imagined. Chef is truly a phenomenal talent. If you are visiting Charleston, you must go here. You won’t regret it.
Be the first to ReplyAmazingly inventive
I don’t think I have had food of this quality since I lived in Manhattan years ago. The artistry behind the tasting menu experience was evident with every course. I can’t wait to go back
Be the first to ReplyWould likely earn 2* from Michelin
Most restaurants doing tasting menus exclusively are Michelin rated. Since Michelin rates so few restaurants in the USA and all of them are in Washington DC, New York, Chicago, or California, I doubt that Zero will ever be rated. But if an inspector ever came to town, I am confident that Zero would earn two stars. (We base that assessment on having sampled 29 Michelin starred restaurants--most recently at, the reigning prince of American Gastronomy, Thomas Keller’s Per Se, a month ago.)
Because the menu changes regularly, I will only comment on one course—the beef course. The standard menu includes locally sourced meat. But they offered an A5 wagyu upgrade. At the waiter’s suggestion, we split the difference and my wife got the A5 and I stuck with the locally sourced beef. What they are sourcing locally is genuinely amazing. The delta between the locally sourced beef and the A5 was very subtle. Taste was almost indistinguishable. The mouth feel of the A5 was ever so slightly more tender as to be almost imperceptible. You really do not need to do the upgrade. Although if you are a couple, I would recommend splitting it like we did, if for no other reason, than to educate your palate.
Truly Unforgettable
This restaurant remains one of the best ones I have ever eaten at - we dined for the first time in 2017, and it didn’t disappoint. The food is unlike anything anywhere else. Ambiance is wonderful. Service is stellar. Make sure you do the wine pairings to elevate your experience further! Price may seem high but is well worth the value. You will never forget this dining experience.
Be the first to ReplyUnderwhelmed
The restaurant is in an 1804 single row house so it is extremely quaint and charming; we sat outside and it was a lovely setting.
Tasting menu is $120. It's 4 courses incl dessert and then about 3-4 abuse bouches at the start of the meal.
Overall, service was fine. It actually felt fairly rushed because there were so many courses of small plates and the wait staff was constantly dropping off plates, picking them up, kinda felt intrusive after awhile.
Not impressed with the somm whatsoever - mostly because of his indifference in his interactions with us and because he couldn't even describe the vineyards of the wines by the glass. I'm sure b/c we didn't order a $500 wine he wanted nothing to do with us and we felt it.
The food - bleh. Overall, every course was very sweet, overpowering. The salmon course was so salty that we couldn't finish it - when we mentioned something to the server she just said maybe b/c it was brined.
Of 8ish dishes only the vennison stood out - and that was truly excellent.
All in all - this meal didn't even make the top 5 of our vacation. Disappointing.
An unforgettable experience that lingers on
A short distance from central Charleston but a world apart. Set in the Zero George Boutique Hotel, Executive Chef Vinson Petrillo oversees a true gem. The tasting menu included 6 opening appetizers then four courses that included a King Salmon with ice spinach, pine nuts, and artichoke which is perhaps the best salmon dish I have ever had (And I used to love in Kodiak, Alaska). The courses were paced perfectly and accompanied by wine exquisitely paired by recommendation from very congenial and knowledgable sommelier. On my list of places I must return to.
Be the first to ReplyCompetes with French Laundry and Eleven Madison
The tasty menu shows off Chef Petrillo's skills and compares favorably with the quality of French Laundry and Eleven Madison (as well as London's Launceston and George V). The seven course prix fixe menu starts with a series of "snacks" with clever presentation: foie gras terrine shaped like a peanut, beef tartare in a pastry tube like a cigar, small radishes in a "flower pot." Hamachi and beef tartare is the "surf and turf." Pumpkin pasta with truffle was next. Poaches (or sous vide) salmon on artichoke and black garlic puree. Venison Wellington was next. I opted for the wagyu steak instead - very expensive but extraordinarily rich. Treat yourself. Cactus pear "ice cream" followed by Tres Leches with candied honeycombs (fantastic). My wife had the wine parings and said they were excellent. The wait staff was attentive and knowledgeable. Be prepared for an expensive experience. This is not a "restaurant" to have a great "meal", this is a restaurant for a dining experience - that revolves around the chef's creativity in the kitchen. .
