This receives an Ok because the hostess and servers were below satisfactory and lacking in how to describe the menu items and ingredients and palette and the preparations were slow (and not described or updated as to why,) and also our bill came out with each selection at a higher price than the Menu, the formal and only menu. They wouldn't adjust the bill price to match the menu (the standard and the anticipation/expectation), and stalled; there should never be an unlisted and undetailed case of paying more than what's written in text /or sign. we should not have paid the additional dollars for fraud and deception. it was not about service fee or worker "compensation" or living wage it was each entree and more was at a higher price on our check.
Be the first to ReplyZeni is an amazing place.
Food is out of. the world. Zeni herself is an amazing host. The ambiance is homely and well-maintained. There is always a queue because of its popularity.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was so so bad.
Tried many things. Little if everything. So oily and heavy meals. Had a stomach ache after and was throwing up the whole night. Never again. The place isn't clean. So I assume there was some kind of bacteria in the food.

One of the best Ethiopian restaurants in the Bay Area! We come to San Jose just for Zeni. The kitfo as an option on the meat combo is amazing. Our son and husband loved the shiro and kitfo! The only thing was we wanted gluten free injera (how's its truly made in Ethiopia) because we got bloated immediately after eating.

Had a hankering for Ethiopian food, and couldn't be happier to get my fix at Zeni! Love this place so much, I once had a birthday dinner here lol. During a recent visit, I came on a Friday night at 6pm and there was no wait. Veggie and meat combo is the way to go. It comes with 9 entrees on a large platter, all meant to be eaten with your hands, and is perfect for sharing with 3-4 people. All entrees were well-seasoned and fragrant; my favorites were the kitfo (beef), miser wot (lentils), and kiki alitcha (split peas). My only wish is that there were pictures on the menu so that people could put a name to each entree. The injera (Ethiopian flatbread) is fresh, spongy, and slightly fermented -- the perfect vehicle for scooping up and sopping up the different entrees. **Trigger warning** Injera can be triggering for those with trypophobia (fear of small holes), so just keep that in mind. During our meal, the server walked by multiple times with a sizzling beef plate. It smelled so good, we had to ask for the name of the dish! Zeni is named after the owner of the restaurant, who has an inspiring story that more people need to know about: kqed.org/arts/13905230/z…Ample parking and seating available. In addition to the main dining room, there is a traditional Ethiopian seating area, which is a cozy feature of the restaurant. This is where larger parties are typically seated, or where additional customers are diverted to once the main dining area is filled. FYI: They are short-staffed and service can be slow, so just be patient. The food and experience is worth it! Highly recommend for anyone looking for authentic Ethiopian food; truly one of the best places in the Bay Area.
Be the first to Replygreat food.
and lot of choices for veggie. Overall good place. will visit again. Slow service so be aware
Be the first to ReplyTasty food - definitely worth trying the combos.
The place is a bit cramped but the waiting staff is helpful. Didn't have any issues.

It was the first time for us at a Ethiopian restaurant and we were not disappointed! The lentils even tasted Indian to us! The injera was the greatest 'sop it all up' tool!We may have to go back there again cause they didn't have the most 'Ethiopian' items: the samboosa and the coffee!!!If the food served was hot to the touch I'd speed my way back there pronto but, everything on the giant injera seemed to have sat out, cooled and then brought to the table. The hot cup of tea was outstanding.
Be the first to ReplyGood sized portions.
Wait staff is very nice. Everything the waitress suggested was so much better than the dishes we chose on our own. Very filling and yummy. Highly recommend. And the tea was so fragrantly spicy and delicious as well. Very warming on a cold day.
Be the first to ReplyFood is excellent but service is awful.
They are so short staffed, 90% of the times to order food to go they won't answer the phone and when you go there to order they are out of stuff or this last time when I went in to order at 7pm on a Saturday night, the owner told me they are closed. Why would you have your doors open if you are not going to serve people? We will have to find another Ethiopian restaurant.

Great food, the spices are intense, yet enticingly flavorful. I enjoy the flat bread and using to it pick up what I ordered to eat instead of utensils. I don't do "spicy foods", but this is so delicious it is worth my nose and eyes tearing as my face flushes while I eat. My friends who enjoy medium to hit spices love it even more than I do.

This place is definitely catered to those who like bland food. I feel like the reviews are a little misleading. There is no spice or heat in the food. It's also very over priced. The people are extremely kind though and I appreciate the service.
Be the first to ReplyWent to Zeni after many, many recommendations - and it all
Went to Zeni after many, many recommendations - and it all lived up to the hype! It was one of the most memorable meals to date because of the incredible and super considerate service. Not sure how it would be for a group smaller than 4, but we left so full and with at least two meals' worth of leftovers. (They reheated so well.) We were overwhelmed and asked for the waitress' advice - she was very patient and helpful and recommended a mix of their popular meat and vegetable options. While not the most Covid-friendly experience, as it is communal and eaten with your hands, it was very safe/clean, and we will definitely go back soon.
Be the first to ReplyLove this place! I dream about it.
It has the best injera I have ever had and I have had Ethiopian in DC, Las Vegas, Cleveland, Oakland, and SF. (You can tell I'm a fan.) Reading the reviews, I see not everyone loves Ethiopian but if you do, please try Zeni. It's magnificent.
Be the first to ReplyI'm giving this place a 3 stars and that was a tough call.
I'm going to be honest, I'm not a big fan of Ethiopian food but I wanted to try it and give it a fair shot. The reason I say it's decent is because the Sambussa is actually really good. The exterior and interior. Perfect texture and flavor is good. The world famous injera however did not amaze me. This isn't the restaurant, it's just my taste preference. I got the KITFO injera which is beef and herbs butter essentially. It's just way too acidic, salty, and spicy. I mean everything tasted ok if you're into Ethiopian I assume but for me, the flavor is too heavy. The meat is medium raw or rare. I did medium but even then still way too rare. I Togo the leftovers and seared it on a pan to make meat done done so it was pretty good.If I ever come back, I'll stick with Sambussa.

Just went back after 5 months! It was a lovely Tuesday lunch (this place is lovely for lunch) and ordered the Ye Beg Tibs (lamb) and the Veggie Combo. I love this place because it's comfy and cozy and warm, and the staff are awesome. Def order the veggie combo! So delicious!!

A coworker recommended this place so we made dinner plans to come try it out together. And it did not disappoint! We ordered vegetable combo and meat combo. Tried all 7 dishes that way and it was deliccccious!
Be the first to ReplyIts been more than 7 years since my last review.
Thought I should update it as I have gone there many times. Still the same old taste, ambience and lovely food. Love it. Can't go wrong with this one.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic flavor and quality ingredients.
Clean dining area. Can't wait to enjoy them again.
Be the first to ReplyZeni's restaurant is fantastic.
They food is authentic and always so very tasty! The staff is extremely friendly and go above and beyond for their customers. We always enjoy brining friends here to try something new.

Great experience! The restaurant has taken a significant effort to create an authentic ambience and serve delicious ethnic food. Service is prompt, prices are reasonable for the amount and variety of food served. We underestimated how much bread would be served between appetizers and the meals :) we ordered veg and a non-veg family meal packages for 2 families (8 people with 4 kids ranging 10-16yrs). The flavors and spices were savory and very distinct. Bakhlava for dessert is a must-have and of course an Ethiopian espresso shot! Highly recommend and will definitely visit again!
Be the first to ReplyFood is amazing.
But they never pick up for takeout orders. It turns me off and iv thus found a new ethiopian restaurant i like.
Be the first to ReplyFood here is amazing.
Me and my gf drive from Fremont to here every week just to get their food. Best place around hands down.

One of the finest vegetarian Ethiopian platter I've had! The flavours are always on point for each of the dishes. Injiras are light and soft. Portions are generous and service is prompt. I have been here a couple of times now and we always leave stuffed. Highly highly recommend it.

I came here to celebrate my daughters 17th birthday with six of her friends and had the worse customer service ever. It was not worth the wait or the drive. This place was recommended by another one of our favorite restaurants that did not have dine in services. I will NEVER come here again or recommend this place .it ruined their whole experience. I wouldn't even give it a star if I could post without
