Authentic Peking Duck is the best in town
The only authentically prepared, and the best possible Peking Duck found in San Francisco. Perfect for celebrating the upcoming Year of the Dragon (Lunar New Year is February 10). Chef Lijun Han, a Michelin Bib Gourmand chef for many years, delivers the best of the best, and all items on his menu are stellar. Another wonderful dish to try is Miso Sea Bass, marinated for many hours, tender and delicious!
Be the first to ReplyHot, Hot, Hot: Know How to Order
This restaurant is a modern space, with decent service and spicy hot food. We didn't know what to order -- got dumplings (fabulous), several skewers of yakitori (equally good) and a bowl of mopu tofu (tofu in sesame oil) -- our mistake (even though suggested by the server). Maybe go for a Mongolian hotpot instead (hold the chili, please). A very good restaurant if you know what you're doing. But potentially a disappointing surprise if, like us, you don't.

we went there for lunch as it was well rated on another web site.
Despite the restaurant being practically empty, we were given a table next to the only other guests. Not a good start.
We ordered 3 dishes to be shared between the 2 of us.
Intrigued, we ordered the Duck Tongues. Let's just say we tried it and it is now off our list.
The pork was too fat but the chicken wings were ok. Cost too high for what we had,.
Overall I did not understand the high rating on the other site although it is perhaps due to the "bar" aspect that I suspect the restaurant turns into later during the evening.
Fantastic
Had the spicy crab and a hot pot. More food than the two of us could eat. Havenโt had crab like that since I was in Singapore. Just one crab. Covered the plate! And so well seasoned. Staff was so helpful getting us through how to eat it. Amazing place.
Like others, we were thinking we were going to the Z&Y restaurant across the street and ended up at the bistro instead. Best mistake ever.
not to be confused with Z&Y restaurant across the street
Our taxi driver dropped us off at the "other" Z&Y restaurant--which was very crowded but smelled delicious. When the hostess said they don't take reservations and perhaps our reservations were for the bistro down the street, we left reluctantly. The Z&Y bistro itself was much quieter--a relief for older travelers to be sure. We gambled on one of the cook-at-your-table hot pots of fresh vegetables and beef--delicious. Our waitress was lovely and the staff was generally very helpful. Hope to return.

Had lunch here with a friend. Arrived before 12 noon and found the restaurant relatively empty which is not a good sign. But shortly after, diners started arriving but even at 12:30, the restaurant was only 40% full. This is surprising because the restaurant is clean, bright and relatively quiet, plus the food pretty good. We ordered the pickled cherry tomato for appetizer which was pickled just right and not overwhelming so your appetite is enhanced. We also ordered the Ma Po tofu and the Tonkatsu ramen which were just the right portion for 2 people. The tofu was spicy but the spiciness did not take away from the flavorful black bean sauce and the tofu was fresh and spongy. The ramen noodle was just the right texture, not mushy or too firm. All in all, a very good meal...

Z&Y Bistro is a spinoff from the well regarded Z&Y Restaurant less than a block away, across the street. The Bistro features a pruned down menu of the restaurants favorite dishes. There is enough to interest you but it isnโt anywhere as dynamic. The Edamame (5 USD) was just OK. The six dumplings (9 USD) in spicy sauce were superb. If you forgo the spicy sauce you get two more at the same price. The Chicken with Explosive Chili Pepper (19 USD), about 12 pieces of not so crispy chicken nuggets topped with an overflowing mound of red chillies, was a disappointment. It reminded me of Chicken McNuggets that have been sitting around for a while. The only redeeming feature was the tiny shards of lemongrass in the breading but at four times the McDonalds price hardly worth it. They tell me the leftover inedible red chillies (more for presentation than flavor) are usually boxed up for cook-at-home customers. So, if you are one of them it may be worth ordering. Looking to satisfy your sweet tooth? Forget it. They have no deserts. The California-centric wine list is below average. The few French selections are decent but over-priced. Iโd stick with Sake or beer, which is more appropriate here anyway. Service is very good and they take the Bistro concept literally. You can easily complete three courses with 2 drinks in 60 minutes. The atmosphere hovers above โdinerishโ. The best two-top at the front corner wall across the bar counter suffers from a glaring LED scanner light every time the register is engaged. Your eating partner facing away from the bar will think itโs intimate but I doubt you will. Otherwise, any other table will do. There is also a six seat counter for walk-ins; though the scanner light is more obnoxious there. I came away from Z&Y Bistro with mixed feelings โ if only I had ordered something else. Perhaps itโs just wishful thinking that at 75 USD (tax and tip included) it would be a superior experience.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent foods, nice atmosphere, attentive service
We had dinner on a Friday night. Dumplings, seafood hot pot, asparagus yakitori & chicken yakitori. All excellent, and nicely presented. The flavors were well balanced & the spicing right for us (we stuck with mild).
Itโs well worth a visit
Authentic Sichuan food serve with a romantic ambience
I am amazed by Z&Y Bistro, originally we want to go to Z&Y restaurant, but there were an hour wait, so we went to their sister restaurant, Z&Y Bistro, OMG, they have the best Sichuan food in San Francisco, the restaurant itself is beautiful, brick wall, soft lighting, good music, a romantic atmosphere, which is not very common in Chinatown. And the food! Oh the food! Where do I begin... You really canโt go wrong with any item on the menu, we took the suggestion from the owner, Monica, she is so accommodating and goes out of her way to make sure everything is perfect, and she has a lot of knowledge of pairing food with wine, she suggested we should have a glass of pinot noir, which turn out to be perfect with all the big and bold flavor, we started with the duck yakitori, it was delicious, but the pork collar yakitori was spectacular, the marbling of the meat and fat makes it incredibly juicy, follow by yakitori chicken gizzard and chicken liver, my husband and I could not decide which is our favor, they are just all so tasty. Monica suggest that we order the cherry tomato which has a sweet and sour dressing on it, we have it in between each yakitori, it almost act as a palate cleanser, so everything taste better. And then we order the spicy fish with chili oil in clear broth, this is a little difference then the usual chili oil fish, usually they are full of red chili on top, this one has a clear broth with chili pepper and cucumber, we love the Sichuan pepper that makes your mouth a little numb, just enough to make you wanting more of it, and still able to taste the fish, the fish is poach in this numbing spicy chili oil, it is so tender and moist. And then we had the Lanzhou beef ramen, the 7 hours broth is rich but not heavy, and the beef shank is perfectly tender, the noodle has good texture, everything was done to perfection. We could not be happier to stumble upon this little gem in Chinatown, we are already planning to come back with friends next weekend.

The food there is authentic Sichuan Chinese food! Hot and numb favor. Sister restaurant of Z & Y Restaurant. Usually long line for Z&Y restaurant, just go across and down a few steps. Modern decor, friendly people, great vibes. If you like Sichuan, have to try Z & Y, Highly recommended. Try the Spicy Fish W/ Flaming Chili oil.
