No wonder this place is closing.

It's just so dismal as soon as you walk in. Oppressively warm. Only two people working the floor. Tables piled with food that hasn't been cleared. Everyone, diners and workers, just looks so unhappy.

4/5 by 👻 @Tammy H. on 05/30/2024

Years ago, Xin Chao was quite the exclusive spot, and during my visit, the only thing I recall considering were the egg rolls. However, what truly captured my attention was the patio lighting in the evening, which created a cozy and cool ambiance. A few months back, I revisited, as it remains one of the select Vietnamese restaurants in Rice Military and I was pleasantly surprised to see they have congee on their menu and scallop crudo. Naturally I gave the crudo a try because who doesn't like an orange vinaigrette over with asian pear it sounds so refreshing. That dish wasn't as fresh tasting as a Japanese place and I wouldn't go out of ordering that but it wasn't bad. Their beef brisket dish is more of my jam though. I would definitely come back again and try more dishes. Just think of this place more as a fusion.

Cute spot off of Washington and love the modern interior!

4/5 by 👻 @Jooy C. on 05/27/2024

Cute spot off of Washington and love the modern interior! Staffing was a bit questionable when I visited on Saturday morning - restaurant appeared to be completely closed and I almost left before someone opened the door about 10 minutes after opening. I'm giving some grace because they appear to be very understaffed, but it was a bummer that they could not serve drinks due to no bartender at the time. They have a crawfish deal (5 lb for $35) going on for the month. We ordered this with their signature Houston sauce (forgot the exact name) and mild spicy level. Pretty good overall and the crawfish were huge! They provided gloves but no bibs. We didn't get to try the other dishes but I hope to come back during off-season to check out some of their non-crawfish staples!

Food, service, and sanitation has gone down SO far since

1/5 by 👻 @Raquel C. on 05/25/2024

Food, service, and sanitation has gone down SO far since the change in management/ownership. Xin Chao has been a go to spot for us the last two years because of the delicious food and generous happy hour, however, we will not be back. The waitstaff is lazy and uninviting. So many tables (5+) were not cleaned with food still on them despite there only being two tables with people to service. We were not given napkins and had to grab them ourselves. The bathrooms did not have paper towels as well. Food has absolutely gone down hill. If you come during dinner service, half of the menu will likely be unavailable. Many dishes have changed for the worse including fries, sauces, and the sliders no longer have high quality wagyu beef. The beef tasted like it had literally been cooked 10 times and the onions way under cooked. Tasted like dry cardboard. That was all we ordered this last go around, so I'm sure majority has also been changed. There's also something odd going on with anything fried. Practically everything tasted like fish so they're likely not keeping up with kitchen sanitation.

Food was amazing, service was beyond terrible.

The tables, chairs, and glassware were all dirty. We waited 20 minutes before we had to asked if we could have our order taken. He acted confused and it was very awkward ordering. Was constantly trying to get the waiters attention for simple things like silverware and napkins. Received an extra side of butter requested as we finished our meal, but met with contempt like we were difficult for asking. Wish I could give 5 stars because my meal was delish but service makes all the difference. & For such a high price, your customers shouldn't feel invisible or like a nuisance

Disappointed I ordered espresso martini, very odd that waiter said why don't you try lychee instead. I said, no I want espresso one. Then he says we are out of espresso. I ordered the drunken mussels from app side for dinner. It was no-go because out of mussels. We then discuss the prawn dish. I specifically ask if prawns are "breaded". He assures me "No, they are not breaded". The dish that arrived was basically orange shrimp.. breaded. The meal took sooo long to come out, that we had to skip dessert. Overheard Oscar was "stuck in traffic" which may explain the delay in service.

3/5 by 👻 @Nhi V. on 04/23/2024

Would not recommend going here while they have their crawfish special going on. We were so excited to try the crawfish special - 5 lbs for $40 - and left 3 hours later incredibly disappointed and half full. We came on a Monday night, place was about 50% full, and the crawfish took 40 minutes to come out. This was the case for every single table that ordered crawfish. My guess is that the restaurant took on a special they are not ready for, resulting in both the kitchen and servers being "overwhelmed" despite the restaurant not being that busy at all. My table ordered nothing else besides crawfish so we just sat staring at each other for 40 mins straight. Crawfish was overcooked and seasoning was a bit salty. It's also ridiculous that they charge extra for simple garlic butter flavor. Mussels were also small compared to other places. Two hours after sitting down, we ordered dessert, and we should have known better, but we ordered anyway. Another 30 minutes passed before we received the apple pie. I'm also not saying this because I was hangry, but the famous pie tasted NOTHING like the one I had at Blind Goat years ago. There was little to no apple filling, while the crust was extremely thick, dense, and severely undercooked. The cherry on top of the entire experience was the entirely nonchalant attitude of the servers in response to the ridiculous wait they were putting every table through. Not once were we informed that there was going to be a long wait for crawfish orders, and not once did we received an apologize despite having to flag down the staff multiple times for service and spending 3 hours at their restaurant with just 2 people and 2 items ordered. After ordering the apple pie, I flagged down our server and asked whether it will take a long time if I ordered the coconut dessert. He bluntly responded "Yes" with a straight face as he looked at me for an answer. Who would dare order anything else when this is the attitude of your servers? Was so excited to try this place for Christina Ha (who btw no longer owns the place, which makes a lot of sense) and left very dissatisfied.

We waited so long to come here only because of the price.

3/5 by 👻 @Amanda G. on 04/22/2024

We made a reservation but really didn't need it. It took a min for a waiter to come. I think I only saw a total of 3 men working. One was doing a ton of walking around. My glass of water had a fly in it and I had to ask for a new glass. The oyster looked AMAZING. But the flavor was lacking something. The problem really was that in almost every single oyster (10/12 of them) there were bits and pieces of shell. I know to be careful but these were cooked, pre-shucked and cleaned. I was terrified of biting down. Would I get shell or some crispy topping? I almost swallowed one too. It made my experience of eating these very un-enjoyable. For $38 I don't want to worry about breaking a tooth. The dumplings were good. But nothing too special. I got the prawns for my main and I really wanted to try a different sauce but accidentally ended up getting the same as what is on the oysters. Bummer. My husband got the flat noodles and he said he loved it. It was complex but good. Over all, I probably would not come back. The price and the experience weren't worth it to me although I did love the ambiance.

3/5 by 👻 @Issy N. on 03/16/2024

Ive been wanting to try this place out for awhile now but left somewhat disappointed. I ordered some crawfish to-go. It said it would be ready 20 minutes after ordering, so I showed up 5 minutes past pick up time. It still wasn't ready. Then it took another 32 minutes of waiting. The restaurant didn't seem busy at all. It also would have been nice if they offered water or something while I waited. The one waiter that was there was nice and all but when he asked when I ordered, he mentioned he didn't "see anything" when he looked? Which.. was silly because I have the receipts. The crawfish itself was good. The crawfish was a good size. I tend to not like Vietnamese style crawfish but the H-Town bang flavor was pretty good. The ambiance is pleasant. Parking lot was small - I could see how it would be an issue if it were super packed. Now, from order time to pick up (57 minutes), I don't think it was worth the wait.

3/5 by 👻 @Jill K. on 03/12/2024

I have been here several times and the food/drinks are fantastic! This review is for Saturday happy hour last weekend. We arrived around 3pm and it was quiet only 2-3 other tables. First I had to swap my green velvet chair with the one next to us as it was dirty with food all over it. Service was unfriendly/unwelcoming. We asked to keep a menu and at some point it was taken. I asked for the menu back and said I wanted to order a second drink. The menu was brought right away but then no one came back to take the drink order or refill water, etc. At this point we hadn't seen anyone for 20 min and I was very close to getting up to refill my own water. A waiter came by and looked at the other two tables but not us so I waved my arms. Then he started to walk away so I yelled out "excuse me!". We ordered another drink and were asked if we were done eating, which we were. The check was brought with our drinks making us feel rushed out. The food/drinks were mostly good but a couple of things I noticed- the "sidewinder" fries are no longer in this style (confirmed by waiter) so the menu needs to be updated. The lychee martini was brought in a wine glass. The pork belly bao was about 70% fat, my first bite was all fat so I took it off the bun and cut away the fat. Then our dirty plates with pork fat sat there for ages and were not cleared after we paid and had our last drink. I tried making conversation with our waiter as I paid and he was so unfriendly it made me feel unwelcome.

So I gotta say, I've been here a few times before.

1/5 by 👻 @Brian B. on 03/12/2024

The food is GREAT, no complaints there. A bit expensive though (Seriously, almost 30 bucks for fried rice with a tiny bit of brisket... FRIED RICE.) I'm posting this review today because of how I was treated last night when I tried to eat there. First of all, parking is BAD. Don't even bother, Uber/Lyft over if you can instead of trying to park. They have a tiny parking lot up front and another tiny one in back, and street parking is sparse. Once I finally found parking I walked in. I planned on sitting/eating at the bar and I peeked in through the window before I went in to see how busy it was. There were a couple of groups at the bar but I did see empty seats between them (this part is important) I walked in and was "greeted" (more like noticed) by an older male waiter. I asked him if I could do a table for 1 because I wasn't too keen on being wedged behind two groups, and he said there were no tables available (even though it didn't seem very busy, it was a Monday evening, but maybe they had lots of reservations?) and said "there are only two of us here". Okay.... I asked him if I could sit at the bar because I knew there were at least a couple empty seats there. He just stared at me and repeated himself, "there are only two of us here, I'm sorry". and just stared at me until I left. I was FLABBERGASTED. I literally had no idea how to respond to this. I felt so confused and unwelcome, actually being turned away like that and not even letting me sit and eat at the bar. I was just stunned. I left and went to Cafe Ginger, where they know how to treat people well. Great service and food over there for a way better price. I will not be returning to Xin Chao.

He wanted Viet-Cajun crawfish and Xin Chao has now merged with Saigon House on 1960 that recently closed. I believe that the chefs are siblings. We all love Tony Nguyen and Siagon House so we followed him here. Food: 1) Appetizers: * Pork Belly Bao: 10/10. This fried Bao is perfection. Softly crisp bao bun, decadent pork belly, cucumber, and a nice slather of beef talo aioli. * Not Ma's Eggrolls: 6/10. It was decent egg rolls, but I have had better. In fact, we prefer the shrimp rolls at Saigon House so maybe this will be on the menu shortly. * Viet Cucumber Salad: 4/10. Decent umami flavors but a tad bit salty according to my friends * Chicken Skewers: 8/10 according to my friends. *Crawfish: we all agreed that they need to get their transition flow to a full merger with Saigon House. While we all are used to Saigon House and would rank it a 9.5/10, Xin Chao gets an 8, for now. -For a crawfish shortage period, there was a good mix of sizes. -Flavors were decent, but they didn't get the ratio of H-Town bang for our 7lb order compared to our friends that ordered 5lbs. The folks that ordered 5lbs at a time were satisfied. -The Angry Dragon (spiciest) was more of a mild -The crawfish themselves were a little "fishy". -There was a little snail in our crawfish order but we understand that stuff like that can happen. -The corn and potatoes were good. *Ngyuen'er Ngyuen'er Chicken Dinner: 9/10. This tasted home made which was excellent. The chicken was juicy and the breading was like my mama made it. Perfectly crunchy, tasty, etc. Good value for the money. A half portion can comfortably feed 2 adults. *Ambiance: the restaurant is small and has a decent bar. There were neon lights and a cool vibe. The restroom was always clean. The patio on this perfect Houston evening was ahhhhmazing. Casual seating, cute lights, and a nice spot overall. ln summary, we understand that there are growing pains in mergers. The flavors of the crawfish were there, but the ratio of crawfish-flavor needs to be proportionalized better. Meaning, the 5lbs should taste like 7lbs, 10lbs, 20lbs, etc. We also need the Angry Dragon heat level back!!!! Tony Ngyuen and fam, we will follow you wherever you go for our crawfish. Still the best in HTown. Just some minor adjustments need to be made. We will definitely return.

I had the pleasure of experiencing Xin Chao recently during a lunar new year celebration. Our host worked with the chef to create a customized menu for her guests to try and let me tell you. Everything was amazing! Food was not only delicious but presentation was equally pleasing. The service was spectacular and the ambience was cozy. Some of the dishes we tried: Smoked beef cheek dumplings Smoked beef rib noodles Whole red snapper Five fungi congee Salted prawns Tofu & veggies Braised pork crispy rice Vegetarian fried rice Coconut bread pudding Now. I don't eat red meat or port. But on a special occasion I will taste a little bit of beef. This was one of those nights. And I think my favorites from this evening were the dumplings (OMG they melt in your mouth), the congee, snapper, and bread pudding. I love bread pudding and I like that this one didn't feel heavy and the coconut gave it a twist from the traditional. This little jewel in the heights is a new fave for me! I can't wait to go back. Add this to your list if you haven't been.

3/5 by 👻 @Zach H. on 02/29/2024

.. and was a bit disappointed. We went for the special HTX Mini Restaurant Week. I was excited for the pork belly and they apparently were completely out of pork related menu items... which always sounds like bad planning on their part but I obviously know there is more to that haha. For drinks... their lychee martini was amazing. Highly recommend! However, make sure they charge you the right $... menu said $13 but receipt was charging $14 for them!! For food we shared the egg rolls (pretty average) and the chimichurri oysters which were good but overpowered the actual oyster itself. Had a nice kick to them. For mains we shared the fried chicken - which was yummy - and the salmon special. The caramelized salmon special was the best dish of the night but came out so delayed - probably 20 minutes after our other main (the chicken) came out which was very odd timing... server kept saying it was on the way 100 times. Overall, still a nice spot but I probs won't go back anytime soon.

Oh man, I had extremely high expectations for this restaurant but it was a major let down instead. Great vibe, and environment. I love the decors and finishes of the establishment. Service was great. Food was a huge miss for us. Shaken beef that was suppose to be flavorful and fu of umami was extremely bland with no seasoning whatsoever. If they were shooting for an upscale bo luc lac, they had failed there miserably. The smoked duck salad has nothing to write home about. The duck was good and the only thing that had saved that dish was the regular nuoc cham/mam that it was tossed in.As for the most expensive dish on the menu, Nguyner Nguyner chicken dinner, it had flopped too. Soggy breading, no seasoning, no salt, and really brittle chicken meat. The fries were perfectly crispy though. We all had agreed with this assessment. Hopefully they'll tweak things up or do better quality control in the future. As is, they need to do more.

It was my first time to be at Xinchao and I have heard a lot of good things about the restaurant specially Master Chef Christine Ha so I was super excited to try this out. The restaurant was well decorated using light pink as a primary color with the Cheer slogan in Vietnamese (1,2,3 zho). We ordered a lot of foods cause we wanted to eat the whole menu but the waitress stopped us cause she thought we were insane. We ordered the flat noodle beef, egg rolls, bao, chicken skewers, and Vietnamese Oysters. If you don't know, Vietnamese foods are meant to share among everyone at the table so with the amount of foods that we ordered it was plenty. I have to admit that these are not your traditional Vietnamese foods that you will find at the pho restaurants. In my opinions, these are more fustian in Vietnamese and Texas American style and I appreciated the chefs to incorporate a lot of Texas ingredients in the menu. Overall, I love the restaurant and I absolutely recommend everyone who want good Vietnamese fusion foods.

I first spent 45 mins in a car-sickened fervor writing an essay that exceeded the Yelp review limit by a mile and then ran out of energy. This is heavily redacted. The servers were rather lifeless and it came through in their negligence. When we were leaving one guy stormed out from the restaurant, grumbling about how someone didn't tip him properly. It makes me sad and wish they were paid a better base income. We got two Viet coffee and they were very thin compared to what I'm used to making at home. You can see how one of the filters has ground coffee in the top instead of the inside chamber. Is hard to tell but the other one was very loosely tightened. Neither coffee got the nice seal one might expect and I think this is what resulted in such weak coffee. The presentations were immaculate but flavors in the entrées we chose were very 1-dimensional. I was really excited for my shaking beef until I realized it was 120% salt. My partner's caramelized salmon was super fishy (think a very strong dashi stock). We love fish and this was really testing us. The oysters were not bad but for the price we've definitely gotten better elsewhere. The coconut bread pudding, however- absolute star of the show and the reason this review gets more than one star. It's absolutely lovely! If I were to go back I'd definitely make this my meal.

My wife and I dined here with another couple of this past

3/5 by 👻 @Bob D. on 03/13/2023

My wife and I dined here with another couple of this past weekend and were generally underwhelmed with the experience. The beer, wine and cocktail selection was very nice and the specialty drink I had was fantastic. When we went to order, essentially dividing dishes between the couples, the waitress kept pushing that it was family style dining and that we needed to combine our dishes. We didn't really understand and in the end it really had no impact but it made for a confusing experience. The egg rolls were good but nothing unique. The chicken skewers were good. The barbecue beef with flat noodles was odd. It was hard to figure out what was noodles and what was other items or perhaps the noodles were cut up and fried. My wife had trouble chewing some of them. They were so hard. Some of the pieces of beef were more fat than meat and I realize some people like that but we didn't really find it that enjoyable. Also, surprisingly the flavors were really mild and underwhelming. My friend got the half fried chicken which look like beautiful meat and she said the coating was flavorful. However, how do you possibly eat a fried chicken breast with chopsticks? And when she tried to eat it with her hands, the coating just slid off and the meat would fall on her plate. She found it very frustrating to try and eat.We sat out on the patio and since the weather was perfect it was very nice. There's only a few parking spots in the small lot attached to the restaurant so you either get lucky or have to park in one of the streets nearby, which is not really a problem. In the end, all four of us agree that we were glad we tried it, but we probably would not go back.

I was very very excited to try Xin Chào based on reviews and being on multiple recommendation lists for Houston. We had the grilled oysters - they were okay. A bit dry and I felt the ingredients didn't add much compared to how delicious it sounds on paper (scallion oil, pork cracklin's, roasted peanuts).Next, the Texas BBQ Fried Rice was fantastic !!! This had so much flavour and it was unique. My boyfriend and I loved it.Lastly, I was disappointed with our half order of "Nguyen-er Nguyen-er Chicken Dinner!" - the batter was somehow too dry and the sauces didn't add anything (we actually really disliked one of them).Overall, the service was friendly and the atmosphere was pretty quiet on a Tuesday night. As for the food I had high expectations which were not met but I really wanted to like this place! I think it has a lot of potential but the execution needs some work. Maybe it was an off day, and so since we did enjoy the fried rice and since some of other menu items sound good I would still come back to give it another chance (maybe after trying a couple other places first though)

Unique tastes to Vietnamese dishes that were impressive and good! Go if you don't mind the high price. Had to go for the experience, but once was enough.

Service is terrible.

Host clearly hates their job. Empty ass place and they made it difficult to get a table. Food is mediocre and overpriced. This is hardly a viet restaurant besides the egg rolls. They're only in business because of their celebrity tv chef.

Read all the rave about must try new Asian Fusion Restaurant in Houston and was disappointed. Food was aight nothing special. A little overpriced, would rather eat at Saigon's House for better food at a lower price.

Modern Vietnamese in HTX

5/5 by 👻 @Trina D on 01/17/2023

Vietnamese food isn't usually high end but Xin Chao is excellent in presentation and flavor. I wasn't sure what to expect since my friend recommended it and I had anticipated going elsewhere until I found out that the other restaurant I wanted to try was closed on Sundays. So we chose Xin Chao from the list of restaurants my friend recommended. It was also due to distance from our destination and where we would be that day. We were out with my husband's parents and aunt so we needed a place that was gluten-free and relatively innocuous. I chose Vietnamese because that's my mother tongue, so to speak. I wanted to check out the Viet food east of California. Anyway, Xin Chao is a cute little spot in the Heights. We made it to the restaurant with little fanfare aside from some wild driving from my stepfather in-law. I had made a reservation in advance on Resy but we didn't need it as it was not super busy on a Sunday afternoon around 2 pm. My DH was a little carsick so he walked off to cure his nausea. We got seated and perused the menu. We ordered a few things to share. I wanted the smoked duck salad (GF) and pork belly bao. My in-laws ordered 2 orders of the lemongrass chicken vermicelli and the Nguyener-Nguyener chicken dinner (half order). We doublechecked if the vermicelli was gluten-free. I knew that the oyster sauce probably had gluten in it so they adjusted for that. I also had the iced Vietnamese coffee as they were out of the fresh pressed sugarcane juice. For dessert, I ordered the cake & crumble yogurt to go. The food was delicious. I didn't know until we sat down that the chef was Christine Ha from MasterChef S3. My DH said he watched that season and liked her style. Plus, she's inspiring AF. The smoked duck salad was amazing with the different textures from duck, walnuts, mango, arugula, and scallions. I thought the level of spice was on point but my in-laws found it to be too spicy for them. More for me, I guess. My DH thought it was just right too. The fried chicken was perfectly juicy and the fries were fluffy and crunchy. So good! I didn't get to try the vermicelli bowl but they seemed to enjoy it. We didn't try any of the cocktails but I would have ordered one if the rest of the party had. Oh well. We had excellent service from our server. He was great with suggestions and timing. Parking is limited to the front and side of the building and can be a little tricky. If you're ever in Houston, check out Xin Chao for modern Vietnamese cuisine.

Overall very tasty. Got some of the recommended dishes - pork belly, fried chicken, wagyu meatballs. All were good and presented nicely. Expect it to be packed and you will need a reservation.

Each posting on AppointmentTrader shows you which user submitted it and along with that provides a trackrecord of that user which indicates how much experience the user has and how many percent of their transactions resulted in them issuing a refund.

If there is no user posting that fits your schedule, you can bid on your preferred time.

Let's say Peter has a great morning and decides to take his three friends to Xin Chào Houston at 6 PM the same day.

He checks the restaurant's website and sees that no reservations are available. He then looks at the Xin Chào Houston page on AppointmentTrader, but finds that there are no user postings either.

That's where the community-driven bid process comes in.

Peter can place a bid on AppointmentTrader, which serves as a reward for any community member who chooses to work on securing the reservation. AT then notifies experienced users who may be able to help.

Step-by-Step Process
1.) Setting a Reward (Bid)
* AppointmentTrader uses historical data to recommend a reasonable reward amount for securing a reservation - let's say $100.
* Peter really wants to go, so he increases the bid (or reward) to $200.
* At this stage, the reservation does not exist yet.

2.) A Community User Picks Up the Bid
* DistinguishedTree58, an experienced AT user, has a strong track record of successfully securing reservations and low refund requests, they receive a notification about Peter's bid.
* DistinguishedTree58 picks up the bid, meaning they will now work on securing the reservation.
* Peter can now talk to DistinguishedTree58 for any questions Peter may have as DistinguishedTree58 user fills the bid.

3.) Finding the Reservation
* DistinguishedTree58 now uses their connections at Xin Chào Houston to secure the table.
* If they successfully get the 6 PM table for four, Peter receives a confirmation that the reservation has been secured.
* If DistinguishedTree58 fails to secure the reservation, the bid is returned to the pool so another user can try.

4.) Payment & Protection
* Once the reservation is secured, DistinguishedTree58 receives the $200 reward which is credited to DistinguishedTree58's AT balance, where users manage their own funds and can withdraw via available payout options such as bank transfer, PayPal, or Zelle.
* Peter can now enjoy the dinner with his friends at Xin Chào Houston!
* As with all transactions on AT, disputes and no-show fees are handled through the platform's community-driven resolution system. Users with a strong track record are incentivized to fulfill bids successfully, and community members can report issues to maintain trust in the marketplace.
