Wolf In The Woods San Diego Reviews from The Last Year

Everything in this place is amazing! The food is delicious, the service is incredible and the small details... omg! The area is unique! We came to celebrate our anniversary and check the photos! Each one of them signed a card for us wishing us a Happy Anniversary Is everything in the details.
Quiet, woodsy, beautiful little restaurant.
The hen of the woods and carne avovada are a must have together. The carne is like a cinnamon mole almost. The dessert was way too sour, a vanilla panna cotta. It made me feel like i was taking a shot. But everything else was amazing.
This is my favorite restaurant in San Diego.
I have been several times but our server, Heidi, motivated my review. She was extremely attentive and her suggestions were spot on. I was celebrating a graduation and the entire staff signed a card for me which is on my fridge! I can't wait to go back and become a regular. The hostess was fantastic as well.

Haven't been here in a while, but it's a solid place with a casual, yet elevated ambiance. Food was good and I liked the balance of acidity and fat in each dish. The only dish I didn't like was the dessert. Can't remember what it was- perhaps a chocolate torte? It was just too dense and it didn't pair very well with the citrus accents. Still, I might come back when I'm in the mood for tapas!
Food is top notch and gives Michelin star vibes.
Also, great selection of wine. I'd recommend this place to anyone looking for a great date night in San Diego.

So glad we tried this lovely spot after reading about it in San Diego Magazine. Really nice ambiance and I loved all the New Mexico touches. The food was fantastic! You can't go wrong here. We loved the blackened Opah, the hen of the woods polenta, the duck, etc. Great wine selection too.
My husband and I were able to get reservations at the last
My husband and I were able to get reservations at the last minute. Such an amazing experience! We sat outside and were offered our choice of available seating. They have blankets and heaters for the comfort of diners. Kika was our fantastic server. She was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the menu and made suggestions on items to try. We had the corn and pine nut soup. It was delicious. We also had the octopus, an eggplant tostada, boquerones, and salmon. All amazing. We had enjoyed the carrot cake for dessert. I'm already a fan of carrot cake but my husband generally is not. He was a convert. The crunchy carrot chips and caramel glaze took it over the top. Johnny came and greet us personally and shared his passion for wine and community with us. This was our first dinner in San Diego and it will be hard to beat. This restaurant just go voted at best of San Diego in 2024. If you have an opportunity to eat here, do it!

We tried for the last year to get a reservation here and we finally got one. The restaurant is so intimate with low lighting to set the mood. Service here is above and beyond. They really make you feel like family from the start. The couple who own the restaurant are the sweetest people ever. No wonder this place is a 10/10! We enjoyed every dish with each bite and loved the wine selections. Definitely coming back and brining more friends to share the love. (The best Brussels sprout salad)

Everything we ordered (cocktail special, potato chips, aguachile, soup--and every dessert on the menu) was sooo good; outdoor table ambience during sunset was so sweet, service was top-notch--and then we learned they have a PINAY chef! Hands-down my new fave resto in SAN; and I can't wait for a chance to go back and try out the rest of their menu!
Just an incredibly delicious, and healthy meal.
The cuisine is superb, the choice of wine was A+. Everything was A+++. I made reservations that evening for my next dinner; the owner stopped by our table and recommend that I do, he was so right. Now I know. Make your reservations early. I can't express just how fabulous this restaurant is! The service was perfect, and the ambiance was one of joy. I must ask for the same table!
We love the food here- fresh and good quality ingredients.
..emphasis on quality & not on fillers...limited indoor seating but outdoor is fine with heating lamps & blankets
What a gem located in the heart of the historic
What a gem located in the heart of the historic neighborhood Mission Hills. This is such a special restaurant and a must try. First, the service was superb and the ambiance is top notch. Sweet Corn & PiΓ±on soup is absolutely amazing "Chef's Kiss." Try it! Harrisa Octopus was tender and thinly sliced. The Harrisa sauce had a lot of flavor and paired well with the octopus. The Simple Gifts Salad rosemary croutons were very light and addictive. Overall, great salad. Steak Tartare was very tender and balanced well with the quail egg. The horseradish sour cream was delicious and will definitely order this again. Hen of the Woods is my favorite dish from Wolf and the Woods. My wife and I savored every bite and this was life changing. Definitely order this if you come to this restaurant and you will not be disappointed. Citrus Cured Salmon was delicious and the different components on this dish made this unique and memorable. Last, the Penna Cotta was very light and not too sweet. I really liked the dark cherries on this dessert. Overall, this is a special place, but please make reservations ahead of time because it books up fast.
Dined here last night.
The only nits was the small table and the fact that they don't serve cocktails (just wine and a handful of beers on tap), but because every other aspect of the night was so great it still warrants 5 stars. We interacted with the hostess, our server, and a couple of other people (one of which was likely the owner): every one of them was cheerful, and great at their job. The cozy place had a very nice ambience inside where we were seated, and although we didn't dine outside we thought that the ambiance there looked great as well....and we were impressed by the number of stylish heaters bext to the tables to keep the guests warm. The cab that I ordered was good, and paired nicely with the our cheese board starter. I've had a lot of cheese boards over the years, and flavor-wise this stands out as one of the best (if not the very best) that I've ever had. Kudos to whomever is doing their cheese selections. The octopus dish had a nice smoky kick, and was very enjoyable. We finished off with the pork shoulder which was both very tasty and nice and filling. None of the desserts there piqued our interest, but I am guessing that this place will change out their menu every so often, and I have fingers crossed that over the next year I'll see a dessert that speaks to me.

Wolf in the Woods was a fantastic dinner spot with amazing tapas and wine selection. We enjoyed the French baguette, sweet corn soup, jamon iberico, yellowtail aguachile, steak tartare, and carne adovada. In addition, we finished off the meal with dessert of panna cotta and carrot cake! I definitely recommend everything we ordered, but my favorite was the sweet corn soup and yellowtail. This is a great spot to share a meal with up to a party of 4 or a date night.

There are so many things to love about Wolf in the Woods! I made a reservation a month in advance and am so glad to have finally gotten the chance to try this place. Starting with the ambience, the restaurant is located deep within Mission Hills in a very residential area. There are no other restaurants around it- only homes. Parking is very easy on the street. As you approach, you'll be immediately met by the cozy hanging lights and chilis at the entrance. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor seating feels very European or New York with seats very close to one another. The outdoor can be chilly, but they provide blankets and heat lamps! Even in the tight quarters, the ambience was lovely and beautiful. We ordered a bottle of wine from their long wine list. They don't offer hard alcohol, but had a mocktail on the menu along with beers on tap. This is a tapas style restaurant. We enjoyed the cheese board, eggplant special, carne adovada and blackened opah. Everything was so flavorful! Cheese Board- Came with 4 excellent cheeses along with honey comb, cornichons, and jellies. Nothing ordinary about these cheeses! Eggplant- They had an eggplant special that came with crisp slices of cooked eggplant topped with honey. Blackened Opah- This was my favorite dish! It was hearty! Three large chunks of softly cooked opah on a bed of smashed potatoes in a chili sauce. The fish eggs on top were a perfect compliment to the dish. Carne Advoada- This was my husband's favorite and a close second for me! It was a soft cooked meat stew with fry bread. You can get additional fry bread for a small fee. We ended our meal with the panna cotta. By this point, we were so stuffed, but everything was just so good! This is such a lovely spot. Very romantic, but with very delicious food.
excellent service.
excellent Ambiance. Super upscale. it's no wonder this has become such a trendy spot. The wine selection is fantastic. love love all the menu items. Excellent food. i highly recommend getting a reservation ahead of time. But if you get lucky, you can snag a seat at the bar.

Ask a Question |
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue? |
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
