Great pre-theater meal
The food we had was excellent! Started off with the risotto balls which we well seasoned and great appetizer. Main course was a nice goat cheese salad. The service was attentive and they were aware that we had a 7pm showtime and worked to make sure we rushed through.

The food was good. The atmosphere was nice. The service was really very bad. We had the skirt steak - excellent- and risotto- good.
Be the first to ReplyTHE WORST COSMO EVER. EVER.
A person can only wonder how a bar / restaurant that has survived for decades, and is sometimes noted as a place where Paul Newman was said to have been once a regular or where Alan Cumming was in “just the other night,” could be such a failure for bar service. Really a failure. Having stopped in for a drink after theater recently (October 27, 2022 at about 9:30 PM) the owner, a very polite gentleman, graciously gave us a table for three to have a drink. The bar area was packed full, but there were more than a dozen empty tables, so it was an easy call for him. However, almost immediately after we were seated, our snippy waitress “Abi” tried to evict us from our table saying we might me better at the crowded bar for our drink, and did this, again, a second time, until we pointed out that her boss, the owner, had seated us. What an attitude! She later interrupted our conversation twice to “offer” us food menus. We ordered drinks, a draft beer and two cocktails. The beer came OK but my companion described her gin and tonic as “strangely unrecognizable” as a gin and tonic. And, I, who enjoy a Cosmo on the rocks, ordered exactly that, but for $16 was served a concoction of some unnamed vodka and a mish-mash of junky sweet fruit juices by the bartender whom the waitress named as Matthew, someone who must have flunked out of bartender school. IT WAS THE WORST EXCUSE FOR A COSMO. EVER. We were appalled that this seemingly noteworthy establishment functioned on the level of a dive bar, but at much higher prices. It was very nice that the owner graciously seated us at a table for a single round of drinks, but the place, itself, is a mess. Perhaps no one monitors the quality of the bar service or the (failed) ability of Matthew, the abjectly incompetent bartender. Alas, oh West Bank Café, we have no reason to ever return. Ever. The only rating possible is POOR. And, considering our very poor experience, that is actually kind.

Never a doubt that our first night back to NYC after our multi-year Covid-19 hiatus we would go to West Bank Cafe for dinner and it didn't disappoint! Our extremely friendly and exuberant server, Abby, was a hit with us with her quick repartee and great service. The place is warm and inviting with good food and friendly faces. We will be back!!

West Bank Cafe is a lovely space conveniently located on 42nd Street near theaters and shops and all the hubbub of Times Square. We had a quiet space in the back on a Sunday evening. Our waiter, Michael was a delight. He was friendly, knowledgeable and provided great service. I ordered one of the pastas on the salad and pasta combo menu because he said all the pastas were great. My entree was the most delicious preparation of a pasta I have had at other places and never enjoyed nearly as much. My friend enjoyed her chicken entree too. We felt our meal was very reasonable for NYC. We would definitely visit again

Food was excellent as was the service. Had the Heirloom tomato & mango salad with white balsamic dressing & it was fantastic! Would definitely recommend this restaurant!
Be the first to ReplyGreat service food and drink, bustling theater district. Go early ; make a reservation. Reasonable prices good portions.
Elegant menu. We had octopus and salmon and trout , each very fresh cooked to perfection. Our waiter Jimmy was attentive and helpful. Ben the manager honored my special request for an entree exchange, with patience and aplomb.

We had a great meal before a Broadway show. They ask you when your show is so they can make sure you get out of the restaurant in time. The owner is on location most nights whick makes a great diffrence. The food is always great and wine list is not priced out of this world.

A great place to eat before seeing a show. The waiter asked our show time so they were sure to get us out on time. Had the beef bourguignon and it was simply delicious. My friend had salmon and really enjoyed it. Staff was attentive without being in the way. Delightful meal.
Be the first to ReplyGreat spot for a pre-theater meal
As with most people, we stopped by for a meal before going to a show. We got a lovely table outside, even though it was quite noisy and in non-Covid times I would recommend eating inside. I had spaghetti squash with sauce and it was delicious and healthy.

This Sunday I needed a place for my wife’s birthday. Fifteen friends and family came to celebrate. Well, my best move ever! Get in touch with Steve Olsen at the West Bank Cafe.
We had always enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere.
Steve set us up with an enclosed area towards the back. He provided us with the perfect package… starting with multiple appetizers each one an incredible tasting. Then a soup or salad course followed up with five or so choices of entree. My salmon was magnificent! My wife still raves about the chicken dish.
My relatives enjoyed the the vegetarian dish so much, I was tempted to join them and give up the perfectly prepared salmon. Even the pasta dish ate very well. Three incredible desserts rounded out the meal. Let me tell you, someone in the kitchen here knows what they are doing. Food quality, taste and presentation well beyond expectations!
And moving on we enjoyed live and very professional
music throughout the evening. High quality wines were served throughout the event and mixed drinks were always available. Our waiter was attentive and anticipated every need and desire. My wife’s close friend, Flo, had introduced us to this venue many years ago!
Even my wife’s sisters loved the party and have nothing but compliments for the food, drinks, music and atmosphere. The singer was incredible! I will always remember her rendition of Edith Piaf!
Thank you Steve! We will surely return….
Great ambiance. Great food
Tried this restaurant on recent Saturday night. Found this place while walking through Hell’s Kitchen. Restaurant was crowded but we were able to get a seat. Ordered the salmon which was delicious. Wife ordered hamburger which was very good. Service was very attentive. Restaurant featured live music. All COVID protocols were followed. Highly recommend trying this place.

A very pleasant pre-theater dining spot with excellent service — many aspiring performers.
Cleanliness was excellent.
Crispy artichokes a very good specialty.
Great value.
Very good service and a pleasant atmosphere. Wait for the theatregoers to depart and then it's reasonably quiet. Very good wines by the glass and excellent value!

This busy restaurant is near off Broadway Shows and not far from major Broadway Shows. Walking distance to both. Reservations are a must. Service is above average and the menu is moderately priced, for New York. They have a full bar and a nice wine selection. Food is good and the desserts are great. A wonderful place for a lunch with friends. About two blocks from the Port of Authority.

Hit up West Bank Cafe prior to seeing a show at Laurie Beechman Theater. (right downstairs in back..your meal DOES NOT count towards the theater minimum)
Pleasantly surprised that it wasn't busy at 9p on a Saturday night. Walked right in and was seated immediately.
Spent $100 with tip for two of us: appetizer, entree and 1 round drinks, no dessert... cozy vibe, food incredibly tasty, portioned out perfectly and presented nicely... great variety of menu items and will return...directly across the street from POD Hotel Times Square (where we stayed)

We met our friends for dinner and enjoyed a delicious unhurried meal before an evening play. It is apparently a favorite of true New Yorkers.
