My favorite restaurant on earth.
I come here on a regular basis and I always get the Halibut. I brought my freinds here for my birthday because they wanted to go to a gormet resturante they said it was the best! the staff are the nicest. the inside is suave and moderen but shows the fancy side of NYC

Took my bf here for his birthday - made reservations in advanced. We were promptly seated. My bf is from Germany and he gave his stamp of approval. Great wine and beer list. They also provided extra cookies since it was for his birthday celebration. Will be back!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic Austrian food in the West Village with impeccable
Fantastic Austrian food in the West Village with impeccable service. The vibe was old New York sophistication paired with global influences. The clientele seemed European and Asian but more mature than the typical "scene-y" crowd that permeates the neighborhood. We ordered the beets, beef tartare, foie gras and a few pretzels as appetizers. This place served the best pretzel I've ever had in my life. The truffle spatzle tasted like risotto and was very good. The glazed duck breast was full of flavor. The portions were reasonable. For dessert, we got the black forest cake and the salzburger nockerl. The nockerl was the showstopper - it was a fluffy soufflé that was baked to perfection.
Be the first to ReplyNice atmosphere and decent food.
Would be perfectly worth it if the prices were at least 25% less. Love Wiener Schmitzel; but that's simple comfort food. NOT worth $45. All the entrees are flirting just shy of $50. I'm sorry, this is not Le Bernadin. Also, simple (not fancy) Austrian wine at $21 per glass--seriously??. And nothing-special bread $6 feels like being nickeled and dined. I live in Yorkville and will go back to one of the local German/Austrian eateries at 1/3 the price...

A wonderful restaurant. Great menu complemented by outstanding service. Delightful experience.

I happened upon this restaurant recently and wanted to check it out. We grabbed a late Thursday dinner here. We ordered the rabbit schnitzel, steak tartare, heirloom peach salad, and the goulash. Everything was good, except the meat in the goulash was overcooked. The rabbit was definitely not the star of the dish but it was still good, just not exceptional. We had a bottle of wine and the wine was funky, but good. Austrian wine, a Pinot. Service was attentive and great.
Be the first to ReplyVery good modern Central European restaurant.
I suspect a lot of diners will find it to be just okay even compared to second tier neighborhood Italian joints. The Michelin Star, for me, is hard to understand. The cuisine is unique but the "full package" wasn't quite present. Maybe if we get people jamming in for a modern interpretation of Tafelspitz it'd be more exciting.
Be the first to ReplyFood was great.
Service was good and fast. The atmosphere was modern and almost casual - felt very approachable for a Michelin-starred resturant. We were greeted immediately at the door by the hostess and directed to our seats after checking reservation. The server checked in on if we were celebrating any special occasion and gave us enough time to check the food and drink menu. He was descriptive with the dishes, giving recommendations and answering any and all questions. With the help of the server, was able to decide on a wonderful glass of white wine (Gelber Muskateller) and a couple dishes: pretzel, quark spatzle, wiener schnitzel, and scallops. Food came out relatively quickly. The pretzel was small but was warm and pleasant to eat - be aware to remove the salt (is very salty). By the time we were done with the pretzel, the mains were served. The schnitzel had great flavor and was surprisingly light - the meat was tender, flavorful, and thin, the coating was light - almost fluffy. For something that is deep-fried, it didn't feel heavy or too oily. The lingonberry sauce on the side was fine but we personally liked the dish without. The potatoes were a nice carb-y source to the dish while the cucumbers helped cleanse the palette. The quark spatzle was fine - was not my cup of tea but fortunately my partner enjoyed it. Creamy, carb-y, and had a hint of acidity to it. The scallops were the star of the snow - three large pieces, cooked to perfection, laying on a bed of potato puree. Paired with fava beans and a slightly bitter and tart cherry sauce. The Scallops were seared perfectly on the outside while remaining warm, soft, and tender in the inside. The sauces and foam paired well with the scallops, we completely devoured the dish - leaving no trace on the plate (sauce included)! We finished off the meal with ordering a dessert. However, we were pleasantly surprised with two: salzburger nockerl and almond financier. The former was fluffy, light and easy to eat, reminding me of a marshmallow meringue lying on a bed of tart berry compote. The latter was a semi-dense almond cake with a orange sorbet and a sugar crisp on top. Thank you to the kitchen and team for the extra dessert - it was on the house as we were celebrating an anniversary. It was very much appreciated!
Be the first to ReplyWow! Superb food, service, ambiance, vibe.
We had an array of dishes and everything was delicious and flawlessly executed. I appreciated the art on the walls and that tables that had a nice separation between them.

Came here because of the reviews, but then found a hair in my food . Owner is very rude and stinks like cigarettes. . The whole place inside stinks like cigarettes.
Be the first to ReplyElegant modern interpretations of Austrian classics.
There are always a few classics on the menu, but they showcase what is in season with a dynamic menu including game, caviar, and seasonal soups. The setting is elegant, but far from stuffy with friendly welcoming staff. No Viennese inspired restaurant would be complete without over the top desserts. I do not have a sweet tooth generally, but often find myself ordering dessert. They also boast the most extensive selection of Austrian wine and spirits in the City many offered by the glass as well as by the bottle.

The food is outstanding and I have never had a bad meal at WallseThe service is everything you would want in a waitress or waiter: knowledgeable, helpful, pleasant and at you call if you need anything. The ambiance is simple and elegant, not over done but very inviting. As you can see, this is a favorite placeof mine to bring a guest.

We love Wallse and make sure to dine here whenever we are in NYC! The food and service are always perfection. I literally dream about their cabbage and spätzle. I am a lover of European cuisine, but there is something here for everyone.
Be the first to ReplyWe'd been meaning to go here for years and unfortunately
We'd been meaning to go here for years and unfortunately were pretty disappointed by the experience overall - we definitely won't go back and felt strongly enough that we were driven to write a review when it's not our norm.First and foremost, we were let down by the food. Even the best things we had (the Schnitzel and the quark Spaetzle) were just OK, which isn't excusable at this restaurant's price point. We were particularly bummed by the lobster soup, which had barely any lobster flavor. We sent it back to the kitchen, something we've done maybe twice in our lives.A few other things contributed to our negative impression. The service was warm and friendly at first, but became markedly slower and colder after we let the server know about our disappointment with the soup. I got some hot water with a slice of lemon after the meal, and they added it to the bill ($4) which was shockingly penny-pinching of them. I've ordered hot water with lemon at hundreds of restaurants, from diners to Michelin starred fine dining, and can't think of the last time I was charged for it.To top it off, the check came with a surprise $5 credit card surcharge, even though we hadn't even told them how we were paying. This is not only extremely customer unfriendly (it's not disclosed anywhere and I bet 99% of people just miss it), but also *illegal*. In New York, by law, you can offer a cash discount, but not charge a surcharge for paying with card. They were happy to remove it when I asked, but that's on every single check they're handing out and it's not OK to pull that kinda stunt. I highly suggest that management cease this practice before they end up in hot water with the law.One last thing caught our attention on our way out. As my wife and I were discussing our disappointment toward the end of the meal, we overheard two other patrons who had made an 8:15 reservation. It was 9pm and they still hadn't been seated - we clearly weren't the only ones that night with issues.Overall, would have been a 3-star, but the extra problems knocked it down further. Hopefully they do better moving forward.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful decor, great food and still decent prices
Beautiful decor, great food and still decent prices compared to restaurants alike in NY. The desserts are out of this world, also the mashed potatoes. Service is nice and kind. Hard to pinpoint a favorite dish. They also give you free sparkling water which is something I appreciate.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful service.
Isabella our server was extremely personable and happy to answer any questions we had about the menu or the restaurant in general. Lovely area and beautiful outdoor space with comfortable furniture, lovely ambience, and quite healthy tree really holding everything together. Will be back soon. 5/5 stars. Take that, google.
Be the first to ReplyWe came here to celebrate our anniversary.
I wanted to try the Wiener Schnitzel based on reviews. It was cooked to perfection and brought back wonderful memories of my year in Vienna many years ago. We went "traditional" with the potato salad and red cabbage, the spaetzle was divine! For dessert, we shared the Kaiserschmarren, so rich and delicious. Our waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable, and took good care of us. It is worth a visit.
Be the first to ReplyHighlights were the wiener schnitzel halibut.
Gem Lettuce and the smoked trout were also good. Liked the Kaiserschmarren. Sachertorte was dry and seemed as if it were baked days before. Service was excellent.
Be the first to ReplyMy friends and I are headed to Berlin this fall and have
My friends and I are headed to Berlin this fall and have been trying a variety of restaurants around the city to get us in the mood ahead of departure! We easily made a 12:30 reservation for 3 outside for Saturday - their street house is SO adorable! There were maybe 4 tables so it didn't feel crowded and was rather light and airy with plants and windows. I love dining with friends because we get to try so many dishes! The server helped us select some beers - I had the Stiegl lager and it was phenomenal! Perfectly light and crisp, if I didn't have a day of eating and drinking planned I would have gotten a second round. One friend had the Hefeweissbier which she raved about . Our other friend had the Tomate and she loved it as well. Our server also recommended the spicy rye bread - this was a complete waste of carbs! It was truly 3 slices of rye bread and butter. I didn't even finish my piece - no need to order this. He took us through the menu and helped us select some dishes to share - this was my first time trying Spätzle and it will not be the last! It was creamy and comforting and delicious but also pretty light when splitting among 3 people. The portion was quite generous. The Weisswurst was just ok - it came with a small not entirely soft, not at all warm pretzel and we've had much better elsewhere. The flavor was at least tasty and the sweet mustard added to the profile. Of course we had to have the Wiener Schnitzel which was excellent, especially paired with the lingonberries to spread on top - one of my favorites! Since we planned to get ice cream after, we skipped dessert and would definitely love to come back for dinner inside because the restaurant itself is super cute! Thank you to our server for his kind hospitality, recommendations and excitement for our upcoming trip! Minus one star because it was kind of pricey and two dishes were a miss for us.
Be the first to ReplyHad a wonderful meal this past weekend.
Tried majority of the appetizers and a couple entrees. The schnitzel was amazing, extremely light but full of flavor. The white asparagus was tasty as well. Service was impeccable. I'm a lover of Austrian and German food and Wallse did not disappoint. Thank you.
Be the first to ReplyGet the wiener schnitzel! The photo: I tried.
I was too hungry to snap a good picture at the time. 8/10. When the dish was first served, I honestly thought I wouldn't like it, and that I'd still be hungry afterwards. I mean, it doesn't look *that* appetizing. But looks can be deceiving. I devoured the entire thing and was so full that I legitimately did not eat dinner that day. Restaurant had great service, great ambience, and gorgeous decor. Quaint corner spot in West Village with plenty of scenic streets to walk and digest post-meal. Would recommend and would return!
Be the first to ReplyIt's always great to try a different cuisine, and I'll
It's always great to try a different cuisine, and I'll caveat that I haven't tried many Austrian restaurants but this was very solid in my opinion. I was pleasantly surprised by some of the dishes, though I don't know if there was any particular dish that really stood out. Overall, a good spot to try if you've never been. The pretzel was good but personally a bit too salty for me (maybe that's how it's supposed to be)? The white asparagus was very refreshing and I liked the balance with the hazelnuts and pea ravioli. The spetzle with rabbit was just ok honestly - it came with a mix of peas and carrots but nothing really stood out about the dish. The rabbit meat could probably have been a bit more tender / moist? The halibut was actually very good, and cooked perfectly so that it was still moist. I liked the artichokes it came with as well. The best part of the schnitzel for me was probably the lingonberry sauce. It was also surprisingly not too heavy and very crispy. The decor here is also very beautiful, great spot for a nice date or dinner with family.
Be the first to ReplyI recently visited Wallsé with my husband for dinner.
I selected the restaurant because we visited chef-owner Kurt Gutenbrunner's other location Café Sabarsky (inside of the Neue Gallery) this past year, where I was in awe of his traditional Austrian pastries. I was excited to experience his take on traditional Viennese dinner options! We started by ordering the gem lettuce salad and Bavarian pretzel with butter. The gem lettuce was predictable in terms of flavor profile, but was stacked high with watermelon radish, giving it a voluminous, decadent quality. The pretzel was served with a swoop of warm butter and had a more delicate crumb texture than soft pretzels I've had in the past. As a second course, I ordered the white asparagus. We were informed it was just added to the menu and sourced from the Netherlands. Wallsé was one of the first restaurants in New York to get a shipment of it. The dish consisted of large asparagus stalks topped with two colorful pea ravioli and smothered in brown butter. This was my favorite dish of the night. The thick asparagus gave the dish a hearty quality, similar to the experience of eating king oyster mushrooms. As a main course, I ordered the salmon strudel. The salmon was wrapped in a layer of nori before being breaded, giving it a welcome fishier flavor than the salmon typically served in fine dining restaurants. It was plated in two pieces so that I could easily identify the interior of the strudel before digging in. The carrot puree garnish was as light as whipped cream and complemented the large proportions of savory fish.Wallsé offered all the key ingredients for a peaceful and luxurious dining experience. Playing low music, we could hear each other speak for the entirety of our dinner without difficulty. Our waiter checked in on us between courses, asking if he could help with any further drink selections, offering detailed knowledge of each dish that captured our interest. Wallsé managed to surprise us with its attention to whimsical details. It felt traditional without being predictable, nor did it feel overly experimental. I recommend Wallsé to anyone seeking an elevated glimpse of traditional Austrian dishes in a soothing, thoughtful West Village setting.

I love schnitzel, so I was excited to try it at a Michelin one star. I must say it did not disappoint. I was only disappointed because there were so many other great entrees I would have liked to order also. Fortunately we went with my daughter and son-in-law and they both ordered different entrees which we had a chance to sample and they were equally as delicious. The menu had many different options, not just Austrian. The wine list was extensive but unless you are an Austrian wine expert, it's difficult to navigate; just ask the sommelier for suggestions.

Came here on Saturday with my boyfriend for an early Valentine's Day dinner, and we were pleasantly surprised. The ambience, first off, is very romantic and cozy. We had a candle-lit table decorated with real tulips, and the walls are really nicely decorated with art. Our waiter was extremely attentive, checking in on us every so often to clear our plates or refill our waters. THE RABBIT SPATZLE HERE IS TO DIE FOR. So creamy, meat was tender, & lots of veggies. I would come back here just to eat this again. We had to also try the classic Wiener Schnitzel, and my boyfriend had the Halibut. The combo of flavors in the Wiener Schnitzel is so lovely - fruity, citrusy, savory, and creamy all in one dish. We ended our meal with the apple strudel.Overall great place to try Austrian food! I know there's a lot of mixed reviews on this place, but we both thought it was well-deserving of its Michelin star.
