Affordable stay in Hana
These cabins are difficult to reserve & rarely open for 1 night. Happened to find 1 night open & planned our trip around that date. Cabins are spartan but comfortable if you bring your own bedding, FAN, food, dishes, pots/pans, paper towels, bug spray (USE IT), food & ? Don't forget to print out your reservation form, workers need to see it for you to check in. Also entry to the black sand beach is included, you do not have to pay for a reservation through the NPS as anyone else does. This was the only way we could afford a night in Hana so we could do the drive in 2 days. It was also the least touristy stay we had on the island.

Fantastic camping experience! Staying here enabled us to really take our time with the Hana sights! Cabin was clean and spacious - it’s not a hotel, but I’m not sure I would categorize it as rustic when it has a microwave! We rented linens, and just brought cereal and sandwich stuff for breakfast and lunch, and ate in Hana for dinner, so can’t comment on the kitchen setup. Shower was warm with great water pressure. Workers were friendly, the site was gorgeous, and I wish we would have stayed longer! Very peaceful and quiet, even with cabins fairly close together.

The booking system is absolute junk.the positive reviewers must be smoking crack. Consider the cabins come with no bedding, no cookware, no professional cleaning. So you are basically renting a giant dirty tent. The check in doesn't start until 3 pm. and your out by 10 am the next day so what is the point. these used to be $50 a night which was to be alright, but at $100 the are total crap. Not worth the effort or hassle.
Be the first to ReplyMust do for a family to appreciate Hana
I hate to leave a great review because it will be that much harder to get a reservation in the future. This was the only affordable option for our family of 6 to spend a night in Hana. Currently, reservations open 30 days in advance, midnight Hawaii time with a 2 night minimum. I missed every available cabin in 2 minutes . I recommend watching for the next half hour to see if openings come up when reservations aren't completed in time. I snagged one a couple hours later. Check in was a breeze, but get there before gates close at 6 pm. The cabin is no frills, but recently remodeled. Lots of space, quite a few rules and cleaning requirements. Bring your own linens, fans, paper towels, cleaning supplies, food prep. items and fire supplies if you want to grill. Mosquito repellant a must. We enjoyed having the time to really explore around Hana and walk the coastal path located just off the cabins. Hamoa beach was our absolute favorite for playing in waves and even saw some novice surfers practicing. The black sand beach at Waianapanapa is a beautiful sight, but very small and can get crowded during the day.
Be the first to Replyso beautiful. Wonderful location
It is magical to stay here. Beautiful views and surroundings. The park is outstanding. Black beaches, wonderful foliage. The ranger was very nice and organized. The cabin was rustic but clean. The cabin had several beds and a small bathroom.

We stayed in cabin #11. We had a small ocean view and could hear the waves, which was great. Falling asleep and waking up to the waves, birds and roosters was really pleasant. We LOVED staying here and I’m already making reservations to come back. It’s an amazing value for the price. Hana is an expensive place to spend the night so this is a terrific option. The cabins are more spacious than you might expect—one bedroom and a living room, maybe 600 square feet total. The lanai was especially nice, as you can hear the waves and the foliage was very pretty. I got a kick out of the feral roosters, and we saw mongooses. That said, I have some information to add so that you can make your own decision about whether this is your kind of place or not. Cabins are close to one another, so you can hear other people. The cabin across from us didn’t turn out their porch light all night long so the bedroom was lighter than I wanted for sleeping, because I was looking forward to it being pitch black, but it didn’t prevent me from sleeping. I read all the other reviews before coming to the cabins, so I had a pretty good idea of what to expect. That said, I have some additional tips: 1) Prepare as much food as possible in advance with the idea of re-heating it. Each cabin has its own outdoor grill (charcoal or wood) which we would’ve loved to use but the first night it rained and the second night we were too tired. The hotplate which was in Cabin 11 is a little wonky, but ultimately worked. I would not have wanted to cook an entire meal on it, so, for example, I pan seared fish and then reheated prepared rice, potatoes, etc. in the microwave. 2) Bring a fan(s). This is not a joke. Even though the temperature was pleasant (early December), the cabin was a little stuffy in the afternoons. I can only imagine how hot and humid it could get in the summer. 3) Bring a bathing suit for each day, as ours didn’t dry on the line overnight. 4) There were mosquitos in December, so bring bug repellent. We used Repel, which is eucalyptus and lemon oil, and it worked fine. I doused myself with it just in case. 5) We needed a blanket in December, which really surprised me. 6) All of the beds are twin bunk beds and it’s against the rules to move the beds or the mattresses. If you want a couples’ bed, bring an air mattress. 7) Thanks to the new door locks, you just use the last 4 digits of your reservation (license) number to get in the cabin, so you don’t have to “check in” or deal with anyone. That was a relief because some of the other reviews said that the staff wasn’t very nice. 8) There’s no oven, no toaster, no coffee maker or kettle, and no ice cube trays in the freezer. 9) Hana grocery shopping is very limited. Bring your food with you. 10) There are several food trucks downtown nowadays (Dec 2019) so there are more options for eating out as long as you do it before 7 pm. 11) There’s no WiFi. Our cell phones worked enough to send text and to make phone calls (most of the time). Internet was 3G at best, and it didn’t always connect. 12) We had hot water (some of the previous reviews said they didn’t have hot water). 13) There’s no sofa or stuffed chairs because they’d mold instantly in this humid weather. You can sit on folding chairs or at the picnic table on the lanai. 14) Some people mentioned that there are a lot of rules, but the rules seemed pretty straightforward to me---don’t move the beds or mattresses, don’t tack sheets or whatever over the windows, and clean up after yourself because there’s no maid service of any kind. Highly recommended if this is your style!

Rustic cabins that have recently been redone. A couple of suggestions, bring some fans, it can get stuffy and having a fan is super nice for hanging out and sleeping. Also, they do not provide any pots and pans, silverware, sheets, or anything like that, bring all your own. Other than that, the cabins are awesome and a great way to stay in Hana. Showers, running water, and electricity make these a cheap alternative from camping Kipahulu.

My wife and I stayed at the cabins for 1 night in May. We did the road to Hana and the cabin was a perfect stopping point for the trip. We were able to maximize our time exploring everything around the area. We knew the beds didnt have sheets so we stopped by walmart and picked up 2 sets for less than $20. The cabin was HOT at night. We spent as much time as we could on the porch until bed time. We were then able to wake up early and continue our journey on the Hana Highway!
Be the first to ReplyGreat location, cabins ok
This is a fantastic location, and just a short walk from a lovely black sand beach. The cabins are quiet - we stayed in cabin 2 for 3 nights, and the only sounds were the insects, birds and waves from the nearby beach. A great base to explore the Road to Hana, and cost effective too. However, the cabins need a bit of love. There have been some renovations, but need more work - the fridge was dirty, and some of the mattress covers had mould spores on them. There is an expectation on guests to fully clean and mop the cabin on check out, and numerous signs all over the place telling guests what NOT to do. Overall, came across as a bit mean-spirited. But, for price, solitude and location, I'm glad we stayed there. Though, I wouldn't outright reccommend the place: do your research and decide if this is right for you. If you like the outdoors and camping, go for it. If you are looking for a romantic, cosy cabin in the woods, this probably isn't the right place for you. With a bit of love, these cabin could be a real gem.

Our cabin (7) was clean but very basic with simple appliances and beds (mattresses but no bedding), Bring: bedding, pillows and especially a fan to get some air into the cabin. We were offered a kit with cooking utensils and pot and pans but you need to ask for these. We could see the water from our porch and could hear the waves.Just know what to expect and you find the cabins adequate for a few nights to visit the park. Quiet spot that seems secure enough.
