Wish I could give 6 stars to this place.
The dinner at Upstairs was definitely the best dining experience that I haven't had for a long time. Both sea bass and brill were perfectly cooked and the chocolate pudding was a real pleasure with Maury Mas Mudigliza served on the side. When the bill came up it was around £140 for two three courses and a bottle of wine including service charge, which was worth for the quality of the food and service we had. It is a hidden gem in Brixton and I wish it stays that way at least for some time.

What a delightful and unexpected treat! Upstairs is a boutique restaurant in a house. The atmosphere is very romantic. We were greeted by the owner who shook our hands. I was served a rather delicious pear martini which was brought to me by an equally delicious bar tender. The bread was to die for. I wasn't too fussed with the amuse bouche, i always find them a bit like eating blobs of cream cheese. My onion tarte starter was exquisite. Be warned, the maitre de likes to run through all the ingredients before you start scoffing so wait until they've spoken. My main of cod was pretty good, not amazing. I decided to indulge in one of their fine whiskeys to finish everything off. This place is a hidden gem that you mustn't miss out on. Will definitely be going back.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic.
Attentive, friendly staff, excellent (and I mean REALLY excellent) food and relaxed atmosphere. Will definitely be returning. Not cheap, but not outrageous £35 for 3 courses seems about right to me given the quality.

We booked ahead based on a friends recommendation, and arrived early on opening at 6:45pm. The restaurant is a little tricky to find as it is not particularly obvious from the outside that it's a restaurant. We found 89B though, rang the buzzer, and true to it's name were directed 'upstairs' to a narrow landing where the host took our coats and bags before guiding us into a small bar on the 1st floor. As we were the first to arrive, and had some time to spare, we had a drink at the bar and indulged in a small bowl of olives. The interior is small yet cozy, and the restaurant on the top floor is equally warm and romantic. Open fireplaces, candle lit tables, and a view of Big Ben from the windows should wow even the most hard to please of dates. The food didn't let us down either. We started with a small plate of pistachio stuffed arrincini served with broccoli and boccincini and a dish of poached salmon with red cabbage gazpacho. The arrincini while beautifully presented was a little on the bland side. Better was the Salmon and red cabbage gazpacho which left us wanting more. For Mains I tried the barbary duck served with blood orange, while my partner ordered the Brill with grilled Salsify and bok Choi. Both were excellent. My duck was perfectly cooked, pink in the middle and served with little cubes of fennel candy. We ended the night with a dark chocolate mousse, and left agreeing that we would soon return. It's worth noting one can only order from the set menus here (Either 2 courses £27 or 3 courses for £33), while we knew this ahead of our visit, a couple who sat down half way through our meal clearly did not, after a few giggles we heard them make their excuses and walk out. It's not easy to eat here on a budget, Our meal for two, with 5 Glasses (should've been a bottle and would have saved about 8 quid), olives, one 2 course meal, and one 3 course meal came in at £101.

We ate here in 2008, the night before me and my husband moved to Canada and it was goooooooorgeous. We've now moved back and live right behind it.can't wait to get up those stairs and try their seasonal, tasty morsels
Be the first to ReplyUpstairs in Brixton is the definition of a hidden gem.
Very tricky to find (a little black door just off acre lane) and so lovely once you get inside! Service was great, and the food was excellent, from the homemade bread to the fennel soup, veal ravioli, venison, and bream with barley. Loved it all! The menu is very small but everything was tasty so you can't go wrong.
Be the first to ReplyThe übercool factor of having to be let in.
Lovely dècorExcellent cocktails (a solid v v dry martini, despite its not being on the list)A smallish (23 or so seat) dinning room.2 or 3 courses, fish, meat, or veg.Minimal discussion of the merits of each dish ("just choose whether you want fish, meat, or veg..." which is to be honest a bit naff. The descriptions are all there, but sometimes you want a bit more insight, not snoot. This is where one of the stars dropped off, unfortunately)Excellently cooked (or uncooked, in the case of the tartare) food. Tuna tartare came just cool enough with a fresh squeeze of lemon that gives the burst of acidity that it craves, with lovely cress on top. Proper veal with carefully put together chard stems underneath. An awesome selection of cheese. Totally solid wine list-- including 2 by-the-glasses that were fab (the Malbec they had on (Nieto - find it and drink more). Will definitely be back.

Landed in a noisy Brixton station at 9pm Friday night with a grumbling tummy. Couldn't make up my mind about where to eat, but had heard of Upstairs. Quick call and I was on the back of my bicycle while He cycled-up past Tesco's and Lidle's and after nearly falling off and getting a rack shape bruise, we were there . . phew!Left our bike in the back yard as we were ushered up into the Gastranomic wonderland that upstairs is. Everyone there makes you feel so at home. Bar on the first floor- too hungry for a glass, we ask to see the menu so we can choose a bottle to go with our meal, guess the staff could hear my tummy rumbling as they quickly ushered me up to second floor and our table was ready. They didn't have the first wine we chose- a Chilean white- tried to offer me a French SB instead, but I am a shameful south American affociondo when it comes to wine, so he suggested this beautiful Argeninian white which tasted like watermelon, and I was happy. Then came the food, we could have done the tasting menu for around £38 each, but as we always share our food we didn't bother. 2 courses for £25. menu reassuringly simple - 3 choices fish, meat or veg!Shared the mackerel and fennel starter - beautiful, perfectly cooked, amazing presentation. Then the mains, he got the Stone Bass fish, I got chicken pot au fille. both delicious, both completely different - swapped about 4 times. obv small portions as this is French gastro.Puds was honeycomb ice cream with marshmello so so.I had to drink most of the wine as he was driving.Despite the price, I will definitely be back here, it's so lovely to have this kind of place hidden like a gem in south London. Hey next time I want the tasting menu, and will try not to drink so much wine, so I can actually savor the food, but even with all the wine, this place and its food is unforgettable.
Be the first to ReplyA wonderfully simple, intimate dining experience.
In a Victorian house that has been split into downstairs coffee shop (Opus), 1st floor bar, and upstairs restaurant with about 8 tables and a fantastic small menu where everything is good and the wine is even better. You normally start with drinks at the tiny bar on the 1st floor, which could be someone's living room. You are then escorted to dinner on the top floor. Although there are reports that the menu is lacking of late, and I was a bit disappointed to see leek and potato soup as one of three starter choices which I thought was a bit safe, the food is generally wonderful French, tasty, delicate. I had one of the best starters I've ever had there rabbit ravioli which was intricately made and packed with flavour. The menu offers only 3 choices of starters, main and dessert, but I like this shows confidence and you know anything you order will be superb. Is up there with Chez Bruce standard cooking in SW London. Wine list, as a French run place, is superb. Run by the inspirational Philippe Castaing, who has an inspirational vision for Brixton and is making it his business to transform Acre Lane. Small, quirky and romantic.
