My friends and I had a great time dining at Ume! As soon as
My friends and I had a great time dining at Ume! As soon as you enter the restaurant you feel a calming aura. You take your shoes off and wash your hands to be welcomed with an outdoorsy garden dining area. We tried both the mocktails, cucumber yuzu and the peach one they were both SO good and refreshing. I got the cucumber yuzu drink which came in a big bowl to sip on which was funny and satisfying to me. The peach one had a very natural but strong crisp peach flavor to it. I also tried my friend's plum wine which was sweet and perfect to complement with the sushi. We all got the set, you start off with a side of soup which had a strong umami and seafood taste to it, great way to start the meal. It is suggested to eat the pieces from left to right, following the sheets suggestions on the seasonings to go with it. It was fun to test out the seasonings and try out different combinations, you really can't go wrong with any of them! I personally loved the chutoro, akami, and salmon. I loved the ghost pepper salt as it had a good kick to it, the kirami wasabi, yuzu, and hickory salt! The rice was also so good and was seasoned perfectly! I normally don't eat a lot of rice but was happy to finish all of it with all the seasonings mixed in. The service was super friendly and prompt. They even so nice to accommodate us even though we were running a bit late. We were also celebrating a friend's birthday and was surprised with complimentary ice cream with kinako and honey!
Be the first to ReplyThe most unique and prettiest omakase experience I've had!
The most unique and prettiest omakase experience I've had! We booked a table for 6 and this is a traditional Japanese restaurant where you take off your shoes and wash your hands before entering into the dining room. Our server led us to our table outside and you sit on a mat where the table is fairly low. You have to either sit criss-cross or on your knees. The menu is prix-fixe so everyone must order the $78 omakase but that is extremely affordable in my opinion compared to other cities (ie; SF). We chose to add sake and a supplemental ikura-don box. The omakase platter came out and was beautiful. Truly the prettiest omakases I've ever had. You get 12 pieces of sashimi that is beautifully prepared, 6 pieces of nori, a rice bowl, a small platter of seasonings. The menu itself includes instructions on how to best eat the omakase and what seasonings are recommended with each fish. It was a lovely experience and was essentially deconstructed sushi that you assemble yourself. Personally I loved this experience since it was engaging and allowed me to add on as much rice/seasoning as I preferred. I enjoyed tasting the different seasonings and brushing the soy sauce on to each hand roll. I can tell the chef put in a lot of creativity and effort into the menu which was beautifully executed. Servers were also extremely friendly and knowledgable. It was our friend's birthday and they gave us 2 ice cream dishes for us to enjoy, very kind! I'd definitely come back to dine here when I'm back in the city. 10/10 experience!
Be the first to ReplyVery affordable omakase experience.
The fish layout and dips and dressing were all beautiful and fresh! My main downside is that the king salmon was replaced with boiled baby squid which I wish they told us because that is NOT an equivalent trade at all. But other than that a very interesting experience. You take off your shoes and sit on a pillow which killed my back and after walking all day my feet stank and hurt my friends noses. But all in all food was good. The standout dish was the chirashi bowl... OMG. It was delicious. I still think about it. It had toro uni and much more. Every bite was a slice of heaven. If you go here you have to get a omakase set or something of equal or greater value just a hard up

Easily a new fav omakase spot!! I recently had the pleasure of dining here, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. Unlike your traditional restaurants, you have to take off your shoes before you are seated. The atmosphere provided the perfect ambiance, cute for a date or just a night out with friends. Service was top-notch, with a very attentive & friendly staff. The attention to detail for was very well thought out. The fish was paired perfectly, and I loved that you are the creator of every single piece. Each plate is curated in such a beautifully artistic way. Each bite was a testament to the quality and care put into sourcing the ingredients. The chicken mushroom scallop miso soup was one of the best miso soups that I've had Overall, for the price, Ume is a stellar spot for okakase and definitely has been added as one of my favs. I can't wait to return for another unforgettable meal!

AMAZING!! all the sushi was excellent! i loved every single bite, some favorites were the negitoro, uni crab, and the shima aji! each piece had a slightly innovative take which a collection of nine sauces/salts to use. they also had nori sheets and rice to make your own hand roll. the most impressive part of ume is the fact that they were able to change my opinion on certain fish! based on past experiences, i was under the impression that i was not a fan of madai, but the madai at ume was so tender and clean. aside from the sushi, the soup and drinks were also excellent! the soup had a rich mushroom and bomito flavor, my boyfriend was flabbergasted with how fast i drank it all. the yuzu cucumber matcha was so refreshing! in addition, service, impeccable. so professional yet personable. silvia/syliva (caught their name, not how to spell it) absolute angel. explained everything so well, and was so conscientious. i had a soy milk allergy and she came over and made sure everything was okay for a complimentary birthday dessert (which was also delicious) such a special place, and we are seriously considering also implementing the same dining style in our apartment when we get home. so happy to spend a birthday here :) (sylvia/silvia, i hope u get a raise u were amazing)

I think this is more of a place to go for vibes and aesthetics (it was really pretty not going to lie). I did enjoy taking off the shoes and sitting on the floor to eat, reminds me of living back in asian. The sushi was mediocre. This is definitely more of a fun place to go hang out with friends and stuff.
Be the first to ReplyBeautifully designed, but not too overly pretentious, Ume
Beautifully designed, but not too overly pretentious, Ume serves intricately built sushi sets that fit in contemporary art museums. The interior is adorable, with guests having to take their shoes off at the entrance much like entering a traditional Japanese home. The "outdoor" seating area where we were situated was completely enclosed with greenery dotted here and there. Service was top notch, as expected at these fancier places, as our waitstaff made sure everything was up to par - extra salt, water, etc. while not being too constantly distracting. The main star of the show was their signature set that came with 12 beautifully crafted sushi pieces, rice, miso soup, and an assortment of salt accompaniments. The flavors of each piece was so varied and interesting, especially having to figure out which salt paired with what was a bit overwhelming at first. However, when I leaned more into how I wanted to eat the sushi, then it was a lot more of a comforting experience. This is a great place for an intimate dates with very picturesque food!
Be the first to ReplyUme is literally a dream.
This is one of the best dining experiences I've had in NYC and I cannot recommend enough. Everything is so meticulously thought out here, from the initial entrance (where you're asked to wash your hands and take off your shoes) to the food itself. The service is incredible and the ambiance is amazing -- nobody would ever be able to guess they're in Williamsburg, instead of Japan. The food, in my opinion, is where Ume really shines. 12 pieces of sushi for $78 might be expensive anywhere else, but it's an absolute steal in NYC for the quality alone. Each piece of fish is so well prepared, and arranged in a beautiful way. My favorite was either the scallop or the salmon, but literally everything I ate was delicious. My favorite part of the meal, though, were the different sauce / salt pairings they give you. This absolutely made the meal, and is such a unique and lovely take that I haven't seen anywhere else. Essentially, Ume curates different wasabis, sauces, and salts from around the world (we had salts from places like Iceland and South Africa!). They provide a pairing guide as well, although you don't necessarily need to follow that. You're definitely encouraged to play around with what you like best! TLDR: Ume is 110% worth it. Go for the food, stay for the service / ambiance. Truly can't recommend this place enough.
Be the first to ReplyMust visit! Great and high quality fish.
The best ambiance and service. Desserts are a must try as well.

It was my first time trying omakase and this experience was wonderful! Vibes 10/10: When you first walk in, you ring a doorbell and a server will come out and explain that you have to take off your shoes and wash your hands before you enter. Our table was in the garden and it was so pretty. It is a little bit chilly if you go in the winter but the heater is blasting and they have fleece blankets for each table. Food 10/10: The menu was quite helpful and all of the fish was delicious. I loved how I got the freedom to choose the sauce for the fish and got to experiment with a lot of flavors. The soup was so good too! Service 9/10: Docking it to 4/5 stars because of the service. I very much understood that the seating times were strict. My friend arrived 10 min later than I did and was not able to be seated until she arrived (which is standard at most restaurants). I was just confused as to why our food came out very slow though. We probably only had about 45 minutes to eat before we got kicked out.
Be the first to ReplyA true enjoyable cultural experience.
Upon entering you are greeted and asked to remove your shoes and wash your hands. You are then escorted to your table to eat as you sit on cushiony floor pillows. The presentation of the de-constructed Omakase is beautifully thought out and is accompanied by an array of salts and wasabi. Along with the fish you are given soup and seaweed wrappers letting you choose to wrap or not. In addition to the Sushi Set we ordered the Everything Don dish and Tokubetsu Junmai Souden Sake to drink. If you enjoy sweet sake this is the perfect one. The service was seamless with our waiter guiding us thru the different flavors. It's such a wonderful experience but be sure to be on time because seatings are very close together.

Artistically driven Japanese restaurant with deconstructed sushi plates that allow for a unique experience in dining. Has first-rate complementary pieces (miso soup, Japanese peach wine or sparkling sake) that almost stand out more than the rolls themselves. $80 a person. 4.5/5 stars as a lunch spot.
Be the first to ReplyThe best sushi ever.
The experience, service, plating, taste it was everything. A must in Williamsburg
Be the first to ReplyExperience and vibe 5/5.
Service 2/5. ordered sake and two beer. they didn't ask which size of sake so just brought the biggest bottle (mind you it was two of us) and only one beer. The food came to the table as I was using the bathroom and my husband said nobody explained anything but said someone will be back - NOBODY was back for the entire time! Until at 3.40pm I asked a waitress for the Mochi's and said I know it's late but we really wanna try them. She asked if nobody asked us for desserts and I did tell her that nobody was at the table since food came. The tap water you get tasted horrible and the bottle seemed dirty. I did pay a lot for this visit and yes experience was cool n stuff but not sure if it's worth to come back.
Be the first to ReplyThe sushi style is called temaki-zushi in Japanese term.
We, Japanese people, do this at home a lot. In my childhood, I really loved it home as we can put fish or fresh ingredients rolled in the seaweed yourself. Having said that, this presentation at Ume was pretty graceful and beautiful, compared with home temaki-zushi. 12 kinds of fish arrangements on the plate as attached pictures. But there are only 5-6 seaweed pieces provided. And if you need more seaweeds, it will be extra $, which doesn't make any sense. Also seaweed quality is mediocre. Not top. We received a lengthy text message the day before - as if we were to take SAT at college board. We could not read it as it was too long but the grace time they can guarantee to keep the reservation is 5 min. We had had a huge pressure to arrive early like taking an exam or we would be screwed. But the door is not open before 5pm ( our reservation was 5pm) which also doesn't make sense. The door opened at 5pm sharp like an exam venue. The venue is unique but very simple and could be better from Japanese point of view. I actually expected better. Price is, I think, high for this whole experience (food, limited 90 min eating like an exam again, pretty plain Japanese -style (not quite real Japanese) setting - $78 per person and I ordered one more set of seaweed and ended up $100 per person including 20% tip. Definitely, it is a fun experience with beautiful presentations and fresh tasty food but not a place we must go back in 6 months or one year. My girlfriend (native japanese) said she was happy with the amount of food, but I (native japanese) felt it was like appetizer size plus and needed to go to grab a bowl of ramen after that.
Be the first to ReplyGreat experience with great ambiance.
Feels like you are in Tokyo with the interior design. When you first walk in you must remove shoes, wash hands in traditional Japanese style, and sit on a cushion seat with legs crossed. Prefix menu serving seasonal fish with assortment of salts and toppings. You can get creative with mixing and matching. Fresh and high quality fish.

My boyfriend and I came to Ume for dinner on a Sunday at 6:30pm. I had made a reservation around 1 month prior for indoor dining and I do recommend you make a reservation since this place gets booked pretty far in advance. There is both indoor and outdoor seating and I chose indoor since I worried it would be cold but the outside seemed so cute I wish I had looked into how the heating situation was! We got a very detailed text the night before explaining logistics (shoes off restaurant, sanitation policies, prix-fixe menu, cancellation policies, etc.) which I found very helpful and reflective of how organized this restaurant is. We arrived around 20 minutes late to our reservation but let them know in advance so they still accommodated us and held our table. You first take off your shoes and store them in a cupboard and then wash your hands before entering. Then, they will sit you at your table and they have very comfy cushions as well as blankets. Our server came by right away to explain how everything worked and to offer us water. There is a separate menu available of other things you can order but we wanted to stick with the prix-fixe only. Even if I had mild regret about not choosing outside seating, the inside also had the cutest ambiance: it was very romantic, simple, and felt very relaxing. The whole time they were playing acoustic covers of popular songs which made for perfect background music to our candle lit dinner-- Truly a great spot for a special date! Around 15 min later we got our tray with the "deconstructed" omakase with all the fish, rice, salts, soy sauce, and miso soup. The menu has very in detail instructions about how to eat everything and what to pair the fish with (although you can definitely play around and experiment). The food was spectacular. I really loved how fresh/ high quality the fish was and how it just melted in your mouth. The cuts were generously sized and each piece had its own unique complexity of flavors. The experience of building your own hand rolls was also very fun! My favorites were the toro, shima aji, and hirame. The salts were also surprisingly good and when tasting them you could really tell subtle differences between them. It was a lovely experience for my palate. Overall it was a wonderful night and I am definitely looking forward to coming back in the near future for another special occasion! The restaurant was spotless, the service was really attentive, and the food was exceptional. 11/10 recommend this spot! You will not regret coming here.
Be the first to ReplyBad fish quality.
Very small portion sizes. Gave only 4 pieces of seaweed and barely any rice, wasabi and soy sauce for 12 pieces. Had to ask for extras but service was slow. Charged for extras already off a high priced price fix menu. It is a disgrace to call it sushi. Hand roll was ok. Didn't try any nigiri but I'm assuming that would had been better. The everything don is immensely undersized. The mochi desert was great and deserves one more star just because of the desert. Most disappointing dining experience of the year for me. Ambiance was cold. When you walk in looks super fancy yet you have to sit down on these horribly stiff little mats. Was uncomfortable the whole time. Horrendous never going back. Also clout chasers everywhere at this place, people who would rather take photos of their food rather than enjoy their food.

We had the most WONDERFUL dining experience here! If you're a sushi locker I'd definitely check this place out. The staff was very friendly and helpful and made sure to check up on us. The salts that they paired with each bite was so yummy! It's not your traditional omakase but it's still a fun experience! You can either sit inside or outside and you'll be sitting on the ground while enjoying your meal. I'll definitely be coming back to eat here again!

I cannot say enough good things about Ume - right from the start you have to remove your shoes and wash your hands. Then you step inside and hang your coat and bags if you'd like then get seated. All of the seating is Japanese style and on the floor. Blankets are provided as well in case you get cold. They only have one menu and they get started on it as soon as you are seated. The deconstructed omakase gives you the freedom to eat the pieces however you would like - on its own, with rice, with nori and all of the assorted salts - or you can do a combo of everything! Do not pass on the mochi dessert, one of the best I've ever had. I have been 2x already and would love to go again. Worth the $78pp.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a beautiful place.
It's cozy and it feels like while you are there you're away from the city. Quiet and very zen like. No shoes policy, very Asian like. Even in Asia, no shoe policy for restaurants are slowly disappearing due to inconvenience and such. So it was refreshing to experience that again. Service was really nice. Very tentative and attention to details. Food was beautiful and it's tastes good. We ordered set menu. I guess the set menu... price is okay but not the best. But then when your sake cost are $50+ for a small bottle.. that's seems a bit too steep. For special occasions I guess you can spurge. We will maybe come back here again some day. For the experience I recommend.
Be the first to ReplySuper cozy and super cute place.
Felt very hands on putting together the fish, rice and nori myself. They had some amazing salts and was an overall great experience!
Be the first to ReplyVery interesting DIY Omakase concept.
The store is kind of a hole in the wall from the exterior, but once you step inside it opens up to a very Japanese-style restaurant. There is a garden area (highly recommended) that is enclosed with glass so it's not that cold, with artificial lighting and trees. The service is good and the menu is prie-fixed. Everyone is given the 78 dollar option omakase which comes with 12 pieces, a very good chicken and scallop soup, sushi rice, and nori sheets. Nine different kinds of seasoning are given, which range from truffle salt, ume salt, yuzu salt, charcoal salt, and different kinds of wasabi. The environment is very peaceful and tranquil as you and your party put together the pieces of nigori / hand roll. None of the pieces were exactly amazing, but they were fresh, fun to play with, and aesthetic to the eyes. A one of a kind experience to try!
Be the first to ReplyI came here with some friends for my birthday and I think
I came here with some friends for my birthday and I think this is such a cute place to celebrate. We had a reservation for the garden seating (which I highly recommend!) it is heated outside, but it still felt a bit cold to me. I run a tad bit cold though -- they provide blankets and some space heaters as well. The interior is very well designed and it feels like you're in a cozy house tucked away from the city. There's a prix fixe menu, but if you were still hungry, you could order more from their a la carte menu. They have different fish options depending on the season with a myriad of salts that you can use to taste with your meal. The fish quality at this restaurant is very good so you'll be enjoying every bite. This is a very different omakase experience from other restaurants, so essentially you get to "choose your own adventure." The only con I really had was that the end of our meal felt very rushed. There are only 90 min to dine. My friends surprised me with some cake, but we only had 15 min to eat it. We also didn't really receive our food until 20 min after we sat, so I can't say this is a relaxing place. The staff were a bit hard to get at times, but overall they were helpful.
