Inspiring, Incredible
The concept, the story of Chef Carlos, the flavors, and the decor all come together flawlessly every time for a memorable experience. My son's wish for his first trip to Chicago was to visit a restaurant associated with a Michelin star. Having been to Tzuco before, I chose it, and he was not disappointed. To have a restaurant that amazes both myself (I've been to Mexico and Central America several times) and my son, who's never had authentic Mexican cuisine, says it all. Tzuco is a treasure.

Tzuco is one of my fav places to go when you want a quick bite by yourself. I love dining at their bar.

We visited this restaurant and loved the venue, attention to detail and decor was on point.
The staff were very attentive and friendly, they had great knowledge of the menus and the foods served.
Our starters: were all amazing, perfectly presented and delicious.
Our mains: epic disappointment. One of the meals was very bland/tasteless.
The main issue was with the steak two of us had ordered.
Both steaks ordered were due to be cooked medium rare. When they arrived they were both cooked ‘well done’. We quietly spoke to our server who apologised and advised we would get more.
A considerable amount of time had passed and the steaks returned by this time the other guests at the table had finished their food.
My steak was exactly the same as the first (well done/over cooked!) and my husbands was perfectly cooked. My husband decided as everyone else had finished and I wasn’t going to eat an over cooked steak that he would pass on eating his meal so we could all leave rather than him eat on his own.
We spoke to the server who got the manager over who was really apologetic and dealt with this disappointing situation perfectly.
A few moments later the chef/Owner arrived at the table and argued with us both that my steak was perfectly cooked. I have never known anything like it, beyond rude.
It literally was not even medium it was closer to well done as zero blood even in the centre of the steak.
I would never have left a review if it had not been for the chef/owners rude and very unprofessional behaviour as the previous staff had already dealt with the situation.
We left the amazing restaurant with a very bad taste and an empty stomach!

Tzuco
I came across Tzuzo when I Googled “best restaurants in Chicago” so I had high expectations. The moment I entered the restaurant, I knew it was going to be memorable. Just loved the vibe! Modern interiors, creative lighting, warm staff…and excellent food. I started with a spicy margarita and ordered aguachile, grilled octopus, steamed mussels and braised pork shank. Our server said these “small plates” would be enough but we were full to the brim! Dessert options were interesting so we made space for corn pudding and sour sop ice cream. Everything we ordered was prepared with passion and just plain delicious! Highly recommended!
A disappointing meal
I really wanted to like this place but my time here was pretty disappointing.
First, mask compliance: servers and bartenders were awesome at mask compliance, quickly returning their masks after taking a drink. The kitchen staff was less diligent. Most of the line cooks had their masks below their noses or pulled all the way down. This didn’t bother me but if it’s important to you then you should dine elsewhere.
Ok, moving on.
First, we called to let them know we were stuck on a train and would be a bit late for our res. Considering it was for 5:15p on a Sunday and 5:45p was available on Resy earlier that day, we didn’t think it would be an issue. The hostess, however, was careful to inform us that we only had the table for two hours so if we were late it would cut into our time. We have a 7:30p curtain for a musical we are seeing so whatever, doesn’t matter.
We arrive and are told if we don’t want to sit outside (it’s cold) our only option is to sit at the bar. Ok. I mean the restaurant is half empty but maybe it will fill up. There is one other couple at the bar who soon pays and leaves so we are the only people at the bar. While we are ordering there is someone on a ladder stocking all the high shelves with liquor which made it feel like we were there when the restaurant wasn’t open. The bartender forgot to fire our main so it took a long time to come out. It happens, no biggie. But the food was really not great. Guac that is frankly chipotle quality, a super sweet French onion soup, and a bland lamb (accompanied by some delicious pickled veggies tho!). At one point the bartender was taking selfies with a server (more than one) and I heard one complaining about wanting to just sit down and have drinks and then he asked for a shot from the bartender.
I’m pretty lax about service but at this price point it should really be a little more professional. And when I went to use the bathroom at the end of the meal there were many two tops empty. We had been eating in an empty bar for no reason.
This place isn’t a disaster but there’s no need for you to eat here with so many great options in Chicago.
Simply outstanding
Went with another couple and split a bunch of plates. Everything was delicious. The server even put together a tequila and mezcal tasting for the table. The food was delicious and the service was spot on. Can’t wait to go back next time I’m in Chicago!

My wife and I had some of the most amazing Mexican food that we've ever eaten. For appetizers we shared the Tetela (chicken) and the Pulpo Enamorrado (octopus). Our main courses were Chile Rellano and Cochinita Pibil (pork). I particularly likes the Tetela. It was done to perfection. The pork was fall-off-the-bone tender.
But then came dessert. OMG it was amazing. We had the Durazno (peach). It looked just like a peach on a bed of streussel and ice cream. When you cut into the "peach" it was a shell of mousse filled with cooked salted vanilla peaches. Every bite was heaven.
Our waiter was very knowledgable and helped us choose an amazing meal.
