Definitely worth checking out if you're looking for fine
Definitely worth checking out if you're looking for fine dining that isn't hella Eurocentric. I came during their anniversary menu of greatest hits and it was one of my better Michelin experiences. The staff was all Latinx, friendly, professional, and a little sassy. The space itself is intimate. The tasting comprised of LOT of food and they have a Mezcal pairing (which I ordered but girlllllllllll it is a lot of liquor). Tortillas were served with most of the main courses. 10/10 would go back.

Best anniversary dinner ever!!! Don't miss this celebration! Mescal delicious special menu delicious! Hamilton was awesome. All wait staff--excellence. Ambient--exactly what you want!
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best meals had to date.
There are two sections: one more casual where you can order from the menu and then a more private one with your personal waiter. We opted for the latter. All the food had great flavor. Our waiter provided explanations of the dish and ingredients. There were some fairly complex balanced flavours, with well paired textures. The wine and mezcal pairings were spot on. Couldn't have asked for a better evening!
Be the first to ReplyWe had the art menu (sept 2023) with agave pairings.
Very fun experience and we enjoyed the meal and drinks overall! I listed the dishes we had in order of preference below, but I'll also note that several dishes came with hand made tortillas, which were amazing AND their cocktails were also phenomenal. Oysters (5) Clams (5) Pork/eggplant dish (4.5) Trout/ kohlrabi (4) Fruit/nut dessert (4) Snack plate (4) Corn/mushroom dish (3) Chocolate dessert (3)

One of the best meals of my life. Thank you to Rick and the fantastic Topolobampo staff. I'll start by saying I did not foot the bill and was not told its total, so I cannot comment on the high price. All of the staff that we dealt with or courteous, friendly, open and helpful. We were given a little history lesson, we asked questions, and we were answered thoroughly and with a smile and a little backstory. I believe we were served about nine courses, and we were so stuffed by the eighth that it was almost uncomfortable. I appreciate this because it irritates me to go to fine dining and come away hungry, which has happened to me handful of times. When my girlfriend and I go out to eat exceptional food, we focus on it as if we were watching an opera, we're not just talking about the weather and saying "oh the fish is so good." The majority of the dishes were interesting, well balanced, and executed very well. Things that should be crispy were perfectly crispy, ingredients complemented each other in their proportions and tartness, sweetness, acidity, etc. There were many sauces, which we both love, and each was different, rich, interesting, and delicious with maybe 1 exception that was on the bland side. We have eaten plenty of Mexican food in our day, but many of these dishes were new or unique takes on things we'd seen before. There are so many good restaurants in this town that I'll have to try many others before I go back, but I would love to go back - after saving up a bit!

I'm a Rick Bayless fan and have grown up watching his shows! A group of us came to Topolobampo for an early dinner, and we ordered: +the Guacamole, classic Frontera-style - prepared with mashed Michoacán avocados, cilantro, lime green chiles, and tomatoes, served with housemade tortilla chips +Carne Asada, Shortrib, Black Mole - wood-grilled Imperial Wagyu beef ribeye with a slow-cooked shortrib, served with an inky mole negro (made with chiluacle chiles and 28 other ingredients!), black trumpet, woodear, and maitake mushrooms, and a mezcal-infused radish; the mole was incredible - thick, creamy, super flavorful, and just complemented every aspect of the dish! +King Crab Fideos - 3 fideos (traditional vermicelli, rutabaga threads, and spaghetti squash) in a sauce of smoky morita chiles and sweet potatoes, king crab, and herbs I couldn't get over how much I loved the house mole sauce - you could literally slather it on an old shoe and it'd taste delicious! Everything came out piping out, and the service was on point. Garage parking or public transportation is best. +try their mole! +great service +make reservations! +limited parking

Don't hate me but we had Alinea and the night before and thought we his was better
Be the first to ReplyCame for dinner on a Saturday night.
They say us in a waiting area before we got to our table, and they served our amuse bouche there while we ordered a cocktail. The vibe in the restaurant is a blend of modern and warm rustic, and the music playlist is superb. We had the "greetings from Chiapas" tasting with a drink pairing. Overall favorites were the handmade tortillas and the mole, and trying the different mezcals in the pairing was really fun as well.

We came here last weekend for the tasting menu (Rivera Maya). It was easy to make reservations. We were a few minutes late but still got seated quickly and easily. The ambiance was very relaxed but quiet and formal. My husband and I were able to hear each other talk. The waitstaff were fantastic. We started with the oysters which were very refreshing though the taste of the oyster was a bit over powered by the toppings. The string cheese crisp was savory, crispy and light. The tortilla soup (vegetarian version) was complex and rich with mushroom flavors. We then moved on to the table where we enjoyed the mushroom and potato appetizers which was exploding with flavor from the peppers. The quail egg I thought mine veggie version was best with a nutty flavor of the purée and refreshing veggies. Next we had the octopus which my husband is a huge snob for and he loved. I had a mushroom in mole which was the most delicious mole I have had in years. Overall great experience.
Be the first to ReplyThis place was the Chili's of Michelin stars.
It felt like I was at a chain restaurant. Other than the sauces being amazing, the restaurant is underwhelming. I was prepared to be completely stuffed at the end of the meal, but that also was not the case. We did the tequila and wine pairing, and I would recommend sticking with just the wine pairing. The atmosphere of the place is lackluster, though I do enjoy a to go gift.
Be the first to ReplyFor $400 per person, this place was entirely underwhelming.
The "sommelier" was new to the restaurant industry. The courses were not plated in an appetizing way. The temperature of the plates were usually not warm enough. The final dessert was virtually tasteless. This also was in an environment similar to a diner instead of an upscale environment.

The new set up is gorgeous. The space flows beautifully. With a ceiling that flows I'd a sandy beach and the new waiting area offers a place to snack and decompress before your meal. The chef and staff are amazing and deann bayless is a gem.The details that is put into each dish is masterful. My two top plates was the suckling pig and the octopus. The detail in what they did w it's that simple tomato was amazing. The flavor if that tomato was amazing. And to use the skin dried was really nice.
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointing.
I went 2 years ago and was impressed. Dinner tonight was in an outdated Mexican restaurant with mediocre food. I would not recommend dinner here.

I really wanted to leave a 5 star review but sadly, it'll have to be a 3. I brought my boyfriend here as a surprise because I had previously been introduced to this restaurant and it was superb. However, my second experience was lack luster. Food was still great but the service was pretty poor. We came on time but had to wait a bit to get seated...odd. I totally get enjoying your food at a Michelin star restaurant but it took a really long time to get each course and around the second course, our waiter asked us what course we were on...kinda rough to not remember when I'm dishing out $300 for dinner imo. He also had a tough time explaining the food and kept looking back at the kitchen, it was a little odd. Food took a long time that we actually had to request for expedited production. I still love the food and think they put a creative twist in every dish but the overall experience was meh.

I ate here 2 weeks ago, and it has been difficult for me to decide how to rate. The food is excellent, masterfully prepared and presented. Like another customer mentioned in their review, however, the pacing felt very off. Between a couple of the courses we were waiting so long that we had to ask for the next course, and the overall meal took ~3 hr+ for a limited tasting menu. In addition, we were not the most impressed with the alcohol pairing, which was heavy on pours of different mezcals. In our opinion, difficult to drink so many pours of straight hard liquor. If you are dining here, the cocktails are sublime, so we would recommend the tasting menu paired with your own orders off the cocktail/ drink menu. All of this being said, I am sticking with a 5/5 because the food was excellent, cocktails also, and the service lives up to its status of a 1-star. The interior is a bit cramped and can be loud, but I overall very much enjoyed my experience and would love to dine here again. PS, my group of four all had different opinions of what our favorite course from the tasting was, which is a great thing in my opinion- means everything is great! Also, my boyfriend has dined here multiple times in the past and continues to believe this is the best Mexican restaurant in Chicago. At the end of the tasting, they also gave us hot cocoa mix (made in house) and a pastry for the next morning. Great touch.

Loved every moment of our experience. Greeted immediately and seated at the waiting section where we met a Chef who presented our amuse-bouche. Jose was our tequila sommelier and he was a delight. He had so much knowledge and it was a pleasure to learn from someone with so much passion for Tequila. Very unforgettable meal. All courses explained at every arrival and all courses came out in a timely manner. My partner and I cleaned our plates! Every bite showed the evolution of food. I love when food can take you a journey.
Be the first to ReplyWe had a 6 PM reservation.
When we entered, they took our coats and we waited around the waiting area. We thought it was odd that we were not seated immediately. We waited 15-20 minutes and then we were seated. From what we gathered, it appeared they didn't know we were there for Topolobampo or had us confused because when the hostess got us and passed her fellow coworkers, she mouthed that "it was them" so I'm sure there was confusion in seating us.Once we were seated in Topolobampo, they served us complimentary sparkling wine to apologize for the wait. Presentation was beautiful, great ambiance, the food was fine. Would try again with a different menu. It was a Oaxacan inspired meal with moles so it was nice that I was able to eat everything. With my peanut allergy, I'm usually not able to eat moles so this was a fun experience. The service was good and I would come back to try Tompolobampo again.

Yet another Bayless winner to go with Frontera Grill but this place exudes a bit more class. My go to dish here is mole and I could eat it pretty much everyday. This place helps keep Chicago up there as a top US dining destination. Cheers!

Topolobampo is a must try in Chicago! The experience from beginning to end is incredible! All the dishes are flavorful, well balanced, yet still tastes like authentic Mexican food. There were only a couple of dishes that were slightly oversalted, but we still ate everything. I highly recommend adding on a drink pairing with your meal. We had a total of 6 courses paired with 5 wines. The selections were spot on and enhanced each dish. The atmosphere itself is very relaxing. The wait staff were attentive and kind, which made the evening more enjoyable. If you have dietary restrictions, still try to go! Our dinner party is always a challenge since one person is vegetarian and the other has both a tree nut and seafood allergy. The chef was able to accommodate all our dietary restrictions without compromising quality. I could go on and on about all the wonderful aspects of this restaurant. I am definitely recommending this place to everyone I know- it's worth every cent we paid, and more! I plan on coming back again in the future!

Great food and great service. If you like mezcal I highly recommend getting the agave pairing, I came out with several new mezcal recommendations.

Thank you to Chef Meagan O'Connor for making my wife's birthday so special! Topolo's fiesta celebration menu not only amazes the senses, but renews my nostalgia for childhood Christmas' in central Mexico. Absolutely worth a visit!

Amazing food!! We went for my husband's birthday and it was such a wonderful date night. I highly recommend eating here at least once!

Overall the food itself was great but for the amount we paid per person we expected much more attentive service. We were rushed to seating before we finished our appetizers. Once seated we were asked about our water preference but nothing about the pairing options. We had to flag someone down to order any drinks. We were served our first course before we could order the pairings, which meant staring at our food for a while until everyone was served. We also had to ask for water refills and flag servers down for drink refills that were outside of the pairings. I truly expected more from this experience.

I guess l had built this place up in my own mind, that my mental hype was more than what I actually experienced. It was decent. But Nothing blew our minds. Nothing really all that memorable. Having had Mexican Michelin around the world varying in stars (Pujol in Mexico, Hoja Santa in Barcelona, even Taco Maria in Costa Mesa, CA is better) I have to say, this was just ok. It wasn't bad. But for the price.... I've had way better. We came during their "dia de los muertos" menu featuring Oaxaca, but couldn't find the authenticity of the region in the food. This will be much lower on our list of places to eat, unfortunately. The service was very friendly, but as the courses moved on, the service became slower and slower and slower. Dessert was decent, but again, below expectations I guess.

Was in town for a conference and excited to be able to get reservations on relatively short notice. My friend and I were there during the celebration of corn menu, they change the menu every few months. It was a 6 course tasting menu with appetizers and drink pairings. First off, there is no entrance to this restaurant, you have to go inside another restaurant and then get let through a sliding door speakeasy esque. The decor and dining room itself is not extraordinary. The food was amazing, everything was flavorful and plated beautifully. The drink pairings matched very well. For the cost, I do not think it is necessarily superior to other similar restaurants in the city, but overall a great experience.
