The foods is delicious.
The only reason why I couldn't give it a 5 star rating was because there was some invisible smoke that I could sense from my eyes slightly feeling of burning that I felt before in another restaurant that didn't have very good ventilation in the kitchen that lingered to the restaurant dining area. It kept irritating my eyes. Plus they don't open for lunch during the weekdays, it's hard to want to drive there to get on a waiting list or you have to plan way ahead of time to make reservations if you want to eat there. So it's hard to just "pop-up" there because you are craving for tonkatsu. I just rather have it easier and no burning eyes to Koromo in Pearl Ridge.

The 6 month wait was finally over!! My second time here and I was so excited. Everyone knows the tonkatsu here is amazing and I decided to get the katsu and oyster combo this time. The rice was different than last time since it had fish in it instead of clams, which to be honest I do prefer the clams, but still really good. Oysters was amazing and I loved that it came with tartar suace. The tonkatsu was just as good as I remembered and I love all the sides you get as well. Definitely making my next reservation here and it's worth the wait.
Be the first to ReplyThe tenderloin is sensational.
Juicy patties of heaven. So tender and fried crust to perfection. The servers were very friendly and attentive. Offered refills on items. Even getting hot tea before the meal because it was chilly. Not too noisy. Just dinner with everyone enjoying each other's company.
Be the first to ReplyBest authentic Japanese cuisine I've had on Oahu.
The prices are very affordable and the atmosphere of the restaurant makes me feel like I've been placed in Osaka, Japan. Amazing restaurant and staff.

Tonkatsu is always freshly made and the service is awesome! Servers always checking if you want more cabbage and your order comes out pretty quick too! Highly recommend this place! Only thing is good luck grabbing a reservation. You have to plan about 6-8 months ahead.

I've heard so many great things about this restaurant so I knew I had to visit while I was in the area for vacation. I made reservations about 5 months prior to when I'd actually be dining there. I don't know if it had to be that many months out, that's just what I personally did. Even with reservations, be prepared to still wait for your table. However, they make up for it with their service because our food came out so quick after we ordered! My boyfriend ordered their jyukusei (aged) pork loin katsu set and I ordered their shrimp & chicken katsu set. Even with the food being fried, it didn't taste or feel super greasy or heavy. It was our first time having aged pork and it was pretty different from what we're used to. I'm glad I tried it but I think for future reference, I'd stick to my chicken katsu or ask if they have a non-aged pork option.
Be the first to ReplyFinally got to eat here.
Need to make reservations definitely 3 -5months. The day I arrived just happened to google this restaurant and long and behold I'm assuming someone cancelled because I tried a month, practically everyday until I got there and lucky me I got in. I was amazed how many people were getting turned away because like they say reservations are recommended. Anyways service was awesome, quality of food was amazing! Felt like I was in Japan. Btw the cost of meal is reasonable and it's free refills on rice , cabbage , ume, and pickled cabbage. And yes you will be my go to restaurant when I come back by the end of the year! In fact I better do my reservation before it's too late, lol.

We walked up and amazingly, there was no line! And we even saw empty table inside! So exciting! We put our name down (there were no names on the list ahead of us!) and he said it would be a 10 minute wait. What a score! But just then, crowds of people arrived, including a party of 14, who had reservations. So our wait ended up being more like 30-45 minutes. But it was worth it. The katsu is the best on the island.
Be the first to ReplyOk first yes there is a FATTY wait.
reservations go out like 7 months i think. I went at around 5pm and put our names down and the guy said about 3 hours. We came back every hour and what do you know he was right it took 3 hours. Trust the wait time - they are very good at estimating. But it is a little nerve wracking because they dont take phone numbers and you just have to hope they dont skip you or wait around for a while. The food - amazing. Totally worth the 3 hours, honestly would be worth the 7 months. Every part of it was delicious, the sauce, the cabbage salad, the miso soup, the rice, and the actual main tonkatsu. They also give sides at the beginning which I thought was really cool, it was pickled plums, bean sprouts, and some other vegetable thing. Very traditional Japanese Tonkatsu, something I have not been able to find anywhere except LA and Japan lol They also do take out which only takes about 30 min. But definitely eat there at least once. The staff was super nice and quick even with the place packed the entire time they are open.

There are 2 kinds of pork: the regular one, which is a more round shape, and the "aged" one which is larger and slightly more expensive. We all thought the regular one was just as good. The aged one is thicker (though tender considering how thick it was). Food is great, and the katsu is all very crispy/crunchy. Making the sauce is fun. Wait time/reservation - because they do have so many reservations, it seems like the standby wait time is quite long. We came on a Wednesday in March of 2024 with a reservation. When we left, there was no one waiting outside at all. I wonder if anyone showed up if they would still be quoted a long wait time. I guess that's the blessing/curse of a reservation system. Overall, a great experience
Be the first to ReplyWell worth the wait if you don't have a reservation.
That is, if you come when they open. Highly recommend making a reservation which I looked up and the first availability is not until May! Also highly recommend eating there to get the entire experience--we were given a mortar filled with sesame seeds and were guided to mix with the katsu sauces provided at each table (one was spicy, and the other was non-spicy) so you could mix to your heart's desire using the pestle also provided. But if you do not have a reservation they do offer take out. Will have to try that next time. I ordered the Mixed Katsu Set which came with one piece each of Chicken, Onion, Oyster, Pork, and Shrimp. All were very savory but my favorite was actually the shrimp--was a nice hearty and flavorful piece further enhanced by the self-mixed katsu sauce. My wife ordered the Pork and Chicken Set and absolutely fell in love with the pork. No matter which one you decide to get you will not be disappointed at all and cannot wait to go back! The entire staff operated like a well-oiled machine with each person taking care of their assigned tasks. It was super cool to see how it all came together. Quality eating experience all around. Standing ovation to the entire establishment!

When I was younger, I spent a lot of time in Taiwan and while I'm sure the tonkatsu in Japan is the most authentic you can get, I always felt that tonkatsu outside of Asia was always lackluster. It would never live up to my expectations, especially in the US where I've never had katsu that made me feel nostalgic. So I was extremely excited to try out this place and it did not disappoint. I think it's by far the best tonkatsu I've had in a long time.I know its a little sappy, but I think I got emotional and nostalgic while eating here because it was so good. We got the aged pork loin set and it was out of this world. My girlfriend also ordered the shrimp and oyster set, and we enjoyed the shrimp but the oysters were only ok. This is one of the more traditional katsu places I've been to and they got everything right. I definitely recommend this to anyone visiting/local to Hawaii

After having dined here three times over the past year, I would love to share my thoughts on this place. This is a very authentic Japanese tonkotsu at its best. Don't even try to walk in to dine here, must get a reservation. I was able to get a reservation within 2 days the first time, but that is not always easy. You can book reservation online up to four months in advance!Food:Jyukusei (Aged) Pork Loin Katsu Teishoku Set (180g【6.4oz】)Their signature pork loin set is amazing. Pork is moist and delicious. On the side you have your choice of rice (prefer the hijiki), miso soup (prefer the clam & green onions), and a nice serving of cabbage (which is unlimited along with the rice). I could barely finish my set since I was so full trying to finish the pork!Shrimp Katsu Set5 large pieces of whole shrimp was also an amazing option if you don't feel like eating pork. The batter was just right and crispyBefore your meal you are served a mortar of sesame seeds with a pestle for you to mash and grind on your own. There are two sauces offered, one sweet and the other spicy. I prefer the sweet sauce then add to my ground sesame seeds to prep for katsu dipping.Service:Wait staff are friendly, attentive, and responsive to requests.Parking:Paid street parking and paid private parking garage underneath, although it is free only during late evening hours.

We waited a few months for our reservation but it is was so worth it!!! The restaurant is small but comfortable. The food was super delicious and the service was excellent. The food came out hot and fresh and pretty quick too. Can't wait to go back.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food! Felt like I was back in Japan.
My family & I got takeout (we were a party of 8). Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyBest katsu we ever had minus the one I had in Osaka.
Friendly staff, great food and overall great experience. Been trying to book for weeks... yes weeks prior to our vacation to Oahu. We came by at about 8ish on a Monday night for a walk in and was lucky to sit in about less than an hour because we were even ready to just do a take out. The food totally made up for the wait! Asked for the cabbage salad and dressing multiple times too, thats how good it was. Ambiance was casual with couples, family and friends enjoying good food together.
Be the first to ReplyThe food here was so delicious, it was 5 Stars.
The pork ton katsu was thick, crispy, and very tasty. At first I thought the 6 oz wouldn't be enough food but it was perfect. In fact I was quite full. They also ask if you want more salad which is finely shredded cabbage. I was too full to have any more. I also couldn't decide on the rice flavor so they gave half of each. The service was ok and ambiance was pleasing. It made me feel like I was in Japan again. Here is thee reason for the 3 stars. My only gripe with this restaurant was the waitress gave our plate to the wrong customer. I witnessed the plate sitting with that customer for a while and when the waitress realized it was on the wrong table she went back picked it up and gave it to us. She should have brought a fresh plate instead of the food that the customer was talking over and touching. I decided not to say anything because I didn't want to embarrass the person that I was with. But, please do not give a plate to a customer once you've put it on the table in front of another customer. That's gross!
Be the first to ReplyHands down the best katsu I have ever had.
It was so good We ate there two days in a row. That is a big statement considering how many choices there are in Waikiki.Looking forward to my next visit to Hawaii just to go here

Lucky to have been invited and accompanied by friends who set a reservation months prior. Best tasting I've had on island. Service was ok. I normally don't go for pork but the pork katsu was sooooo tender and yummy inside, Nice and krispy outside. Parking is cash only under building, surrounding meter by coin or a block or so in surrounded neighborhood.Excellent quality and definitely worth the planning
Be the first to ReplyCRIMINALLY UNDERRATED tonkatsu.
I have tried Ginza Bairin twice and this is my first time having Tamafuji. I did not have a reservation so I arrived before opening at 4pm and waited in the walk-in line. Once all parties with reservations were helped, we were immediately seated when they opened. There is way more customization in the tonkatsu set here. I ordered the signature Jyukusei Pork Loin Katsu Set and chose the red miso soup with clams and ume hijiki (plum and seaweed) rice. Red miso soup has a very strong umami flavor and it's honestly my favorite! Clams and miso soup are a wonderful combination as well. The ume hijiki rice was one of the best things I've had, not only is hijiki high in fiber and good for you but also the sourness from the ume really helps when eating the fried katsu and adds a really nice tangy undertone to the meal. The pork loin was thick and incredibly tender. I was shocked at how much more juicy the katsu was here! I also appreciated the pickled cabbage and umeboshi on the side.Overall, I definitely preferred the food and experience at Tamafuji. The level of customization of the meal is my favorite part about this restaurant. Each part of the set felt very special and especially delicious!
Be the first to ReplyI made this reservation 5 months in advance and boy am I
I made this reservation 5 months in advance and boy am I glad I did that. This was one of the best meals I had during my trip. For two people we ordered the 300g aged pork katsu and the combo shrimp and oyster katsu. Kind of fun and interactive to grind your own sesame seeds and make your own sauce - I liked half of each sauce. The katsu was SO crispy and to be honest, cut up the roof of my mouth pretty bad lol. The pork was not dry but also not super fatty. The shrimp and oysters were a really good size. Love that rice and miso soup is included. The mixed rice had little clams in it and gave it a lot of flavor. We got the clam miso soup and it was really nice to have to cut through the heaviness of the fried food. Complimentary and unlimited cabbage on the side. They brought two dressings out for the cabbage; one with that sesame-y and one that was a soy ponzu. They also gave a little bit of complimentary pickles. This was so much food for two people! We came in hungry and we were stuffed! The service wasn't the best, I feel like they kind of forgot about us after they sat us but they did explain how what the tonkatsu sauces were, our food came out quickly once we ordered, and they refilled our cabbage and salad dressings as we were getting low.
Be the first to ReplyService was slow.
The food was not what i was expecting for the hype and wait. The oil was terrible and possibly not changed for a while. You could taste this strongly on the food. We ordered various different dishes. Only thing i could recommend is the miso soup and rice. I would not come for the katsu. Actually the oyster katsu wasnt too bad.

Every time I come to Oahu, I make an effort to come here and get a reservation. Make sure you do try to get a reservation in advance, as wait times can be anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours on average, even on a Tuesday night. While on the pricier side, I do believe the quality of the food, service, and ambiance are all worth the price tag. The meat is juicy and tender with a crisp katsu outside. I enjoy the fact they offer fresh sesame seeds and various sauces to customize your own dining experience. Overall, 5/5, highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyI was told this restarted was quite popular.
When i called to make a reservation, they were already booked 5 months ahead, so my family tried our luck at finding a table for 4. We ended up arriving around 6 and waited about 1 hour and 30th minutes before we were seated. The katsu dishes were delicious, and the meal came with a miso soup and unlimited rice and julienned cabbage. The meal was delicious but it was not worth the wait.
