Mediocre restaurant
Very noisy and food was mediocre at best, the toilets very difficult to access as down many rickety stairs and would have been impossible for disabled access. Overall not a great experience
Be the first to ReplyA memorable birthday meal
From the first moment to the last, our experience was absolutely spot on. It's tough to maintain a fine balance between a friendly and warm atmosphere but staying switched on and professional at the same time, but the front of house of Timberyard has done it. Creative cooking without any pretentiousness, keeps your palate excited all the way through without once being too much. Excellent bread and butter got us hooked from the get go, and every successive course got better and better. Wine list is extensive and full of hidden gems, with ridiculously good values. If you're a sucker for great ambience, friendly service and excellent food, this is a must visit in Edinburgh. Thanks for looking after us so well!
Be the first to ReplyTimberyard, (very) overpriced for what you get
My wife and I went for her birthday in March 2024, our first (and last) visit. It is a very pretty venue, well laid out (very moody lighting). Now with mood lighting comes the issue of reading the menu (seeing every guest use their phone light to read by, takes the edge off the mood). If your going to have the place in semi darkness at least have the decency to provide (low) lighting at the table to read the menu! The staff were good, we felt well looked after. The food was super tasty (oh it really was) however there is not enough of it. We had the five courses, which came with snacks and we both left hungry and here I thought the days of very small portions (spending a lot of money) and leaving hungry were a thing of the past (but it appears not). I must tell you what made me laugh, neither of us likes or eats a dessert (a shame as they looked nice). So we opted for the "cheese serving" (that last word becomes very important, very quickly), the cost for this is £10 per person. Now I have to admit they did not charge us the £10 each as we swopped the cheese for the dessert (if that makes sense). What arrived was one piece of Brie each, smaller in size than a Dairylea Triangle (although taller). One piece of one cheese each (hence the importance of the word serving). So not a cheese selection (or cheese board) or any other connotation of what you normally get in a restaurant when you opt for cheese at the end of your meal. I laughed rather than cry. To top that off, we asked for a Port (for the cheese), to be told "I think we have a bottle kicking about, its not something we normally have, its left over from an event. We don't have Port as its not sustainable (really?) and we like to know everything we have is from a sustainable source". So, would we go back...No Is it a nice place to eat, a pretty venue....Yes Is the food tasty.....Oh Yes Is it "worth it"....No, we are fortunate in Edinburgh there are numerous "high end" places to eat, including other Michilin Stared restaurants. Back to Leith and "The Kitchin" and "Martin Wisharts" we go. Shame really had a lot of potential, it really did.
Be the first to ReplySmall portion, average food and basic interior
Lack of generosity! Lack Of amouse bouche with counting bread as a course or amouse and also the small portions was all very disappointing. Interior: Minimalistic and car park setting interior With awful cheap light. No paintings Or wall mountains. Small table for 4 persons. Struggled with wine glasses , dishes and bread plates. Uncomfortable chairs, the tiny cushion did not help. High Noise level from background conversations due to high ceilings and noise reduction surfaces. Music also unusual to say the least Service was very much a miss and not what one would expect for the Michelin star: Wrong orders served and then corrected and two of four dishes was served at a time for table for four, this would be unheard off with other one star restaurants. Red wine was served like it was out of a fridge- too cold , we fed back and wad told by waiter that cellar is exposed and as it 5’C outside, i Would be worried about the quality of their red wines. Starter of pink fir potato- tiny portion., Tasted good but on the simple side . Hogget flat bread was gamey and oily , tasted like a very gamey lamb burger. It was felt that it has not much finesse and one diner could not eat it. Mains- tiny portions again. Cod was cooked Perfectly but shame about the tiny portion and not much else on the plate. Quail was very small- two tiny leg and breast with Hardly anything else on the plate. Rather a lot fat hidden under the skin and not particularly great to eat. It was a very average dish Deserts The vanilla and rhubarb was excellent and the rum baba is good but serving half the rum baba with clementine syrup and whiskey. Half a rum baba for desert- I think that is poor portioning, how very stingy! Service was average. Last time I was here was 10 years ago and will not be returning!

Be the first to ReplyThe Best. Big wow!!
Quite simply the best dining experience we’ve ever had. Has the full package: sublime and Uber imaginative food, their own single malt whisky, the most extensive wine list, attentive and informed staff giving the perfect service and the most lovely ambiance. Has to be Edinburgh’s eaterie.

Attentive, knowledgeable staff without being overbearing. Amazing locally sourced and seasonal produce with European wines to match. Beautifully presented taster menu with alternatives for food intolerances. Beautiful setting and ambience and enjoyed the history behind origin of restaurant. Well earned Michelin standard
Be the first to ReplyLove this industrial and rustic restaurant!
Located at the foot of Edinburgh castle, and a 8-10mins walk from Victoria street. We ordered the tasting menus and paid GBP 120 each. It has a combination of communal and individual plates; love ALL of them! Place has an industrial rustic feel and a fire place in the middle of the restaurant. Place is very charming and not pretentious. Staffs are very friendly and attentive. Many chatted with us and ensured we have a wonderful dining experience. Do check out the washroom. Intended to be slightly dark, but restaurant is very attentive to details (there are water dripping musics recorded from some winery. And water is warm).

Opted for the 5 course menu rather than the taster as we were eating early on a kid-free night rather than a proper adult time. Food was good and we enjoyed every course and had the cheese as well. We regretted having the matching wines. We are big fans of matching wines but this selection was very poor - we only really enjoyed one; the red. At £80 each, we could certainly have just bought a nicer bottle from their extensive wine list. So overall cost £500 felt not great value; but we did enjoy our night.
Be the first to ReplyFine dining with a flair and friendliness.
More than worthy of its michelin star. Exquisite food and presentation. Service was not overly formal, which we appreciated. We liked dining at the long and spacious bar (did not at all feel crowded) as it allowed for some pleasant conversations with those working behind the bar. Great people and great conversations!

The restaurant was amaaaaazing! But we walked past it because the sign was above our line of sight. If you see a red double stable door, then you are at the right place. The ambiance was warm and relaxing with lovely acoustic high ceiling. Service and food was amazing.
I recommend the taster menu!
Highly overpriced
Went last night with an open mind, nice venue.
£355 for two for a 4 course tasting menu and a bottle of cloudy wine, left hungry, main course consisted of 2 slices of monkfish and 2 small Jersey Royal potatoes, and that was the highlight of the meal. The wine list was incredibly long and difficult to read in the low lighting, and we were seated at the bar. The prices are breathtaking, £14 for a cocktail, and had to wait for it, the starter arrived just after the cocktail, £17 for an uninspiring Armagnac, £5 for an Expresso. I asked for an extra portion of lemon yoghourt and was charged £11 for it. Nice ambience but this place thinks it is better than it is. Never Again!
An experience but not a great one
Well maybe I don’t ‘get it ‘ but this place cost nearly £300 for 2 and if it had been 1/3 of the price I Wouldn’t review it differently . The onion soup was luke warm and very little of it . Deliberate ? Maybe . But pleasant at best . The paired wine started with a small , very small , beer . Really ? 2 pieces of chicken in one dish and one was dry and the wine was bizarre ( they mostly were small glasses of cloudy liquid and from some rare and supposedly ‘wonderful’ artisan of the craft . ) Fish was good sat on a fairly bland sauce .
This may take hours and many hands to prepare but that doesn’t make it as good as it seems to think it is .
Great cheese plate at the end and a delicious rhubarb dessert with a fine glass of dessert wine did at least end the meal on a high .
Michelin ? Star ? I’ve been to many and this place isn’t yet and in my opinion has a way to go .
Far better places elsewhere in Edinburgh
We went on Saturday and were looking forward to a special treat of the tasting menu.
The positives:
I liked the venue, lots of space and people weren't crammed together
The food in the tasting menu was very nice
The negatives:
The guy who showed us to our table quite clearly didn't want to be there or maybe just thought he was too cool? Didn't crack a smile, explaining anything appeared to be a nuisance and he never asked at any point how we were or was the food ok?
My seat was dirty, I had to wipe it down (in front of the maitre d' who didn't bat an eyelid or say anything)
A lot of the crockery was chipped. The first time we mentioned it and the girl just said ' yes, it is old and used a lot'? Wow. We didn't bother mentioning it again.
The place was freezing cold and I had to give my wife my over shirt to keep her warm.
Beer is served in wine bottles with prices ranging from £20 - £150? The list is just far too confusing. The only other option is a very small can of beer for £7?
The cocktails are £14 and one tasted of diluted orange juice. The Gin cam with a homemade tonic that was disgusting.
Some courses were explained, others were just placed on your table. Only one chap with a ginger beard showed us any interest and asked how our meal was going and favourite course etc. The original guy and the girl serving showed no interest at all.
For the price point (this place is very expensive) you expect a lot more. We left feeling very disappointed and wont be back.
The phrase food for the soul must be referring to Timberyard!
Unadulterated, pared back, food heaven.
Everything about Timberyard says natural, clean, simple. From the decor to the exquisite food to the neatly dressed yet unadorned staff. (Save for the odd tattoo).
Timberyard oozes class and exceeds expectations from the moment you step through the quietly unassuming red door.
We were possibly one of the last tables on a busy Saturday night but we were made to feel relaxed and our experience was entirely un rushed.
The exceedingly knowledgable staff were friendly and helpful and yet somehow managed to conduct themselves in such a way that was totally unobtrusive and service was seemless. Courses cleared without fuss or interruption. A fallen napkin gently replaced with a fresh one.
The food, is simple and delicious. The menu takes you by the hand and takes you on a journey almost akin to an edible walk through the local countryside, and hills. Everything is seasonal, much is foraged and it’s all delicious. Here the food is allowed to speak for itself vegetables are the stars. No need for heavy sauces or distracting spices.
The vegan member of our party was heard to say that every single mouthful was delicious.
We opted for the drinks pairing which was superb. Each drink was explained and most had a story. Again all were fantastic and only served to elevate the food and in no way detracted.
Who would have thought sherry and celeriac?
A truly memorable evening and a fabulous experience. Thank you Timberyard. Perhaps we will be lucky enough to return someday.
Expensive!
Loads of staff buzzing around but because the wine is stored upstairs, a bottle that we ordered between starters and main course didn't arrive until half way through the main was served; two members of staff spent about ten minutes poring over their computer terminal or whatever it was they had behind the bar instead of sourcing our wine.
Speaking of the wine, the list is about twenty pages long. No establishment needs a list that long, it makes choosing very difficult. Then there's the prices! Minimum was about £40 but they're not arranged in ascending price so to find the least expensive wines was a real trial.
Still on the wines, the sommelier opens at the bar and takes a snifter to taste. I know this can be standard practice at high end establishments, but at £62 a bottle, I'm perfectly able to judge for myself. It was the turn of the maitre d' to taste our second bottle and, rather than swallow his mouthful like the sommelier did, he ostentatiously spat it into the bar sink in full view of the dining room. I saw him do this several times during our £100 a head lunch. If it is deemed essential to crack into my bottle for a taste prior to serving, at least spit out of my line of sight, to say nothing of the aerosol and Covid risk.
Lastly, the food. It wasn't outstanding in my opinion. It may be trendy to serve large amounts of pork with no option of a staple as a main course but it's not my idea of a treat. Chuck some chips in and make everyone smile!
A previous reviewer was spot on with "pretentious, uncomfortable" and I would add joyless to that list. The stripped back interior is interesting but it's barren, a bit like the service and the menu - comfort food this ain't and I got the distinct impression that one was tolerated in this establishment with its high principled ingredient sourcing and vegan wines.
I won't be going back.
Pretentious, Uncomfortable, expensive
Pretentious restaurant and equally pretentious staff apart from the guy who seated us whom couldn't have been any nicer.
Extortionate prices for small not at all exceptional food.
If you dont fit in the be prepared for certain staff to speak and look at you like you are an alien.
Everything you are meant to feel when having a restaurant experience I did not.
Maybe focus more on good food and making the custormers have a good restaurant experience rather than your own vanity image you are trying to uphold.
One of our best dinner ever
We had an incredible culinary experience at Timberyard. The quality of the food, the accompanying wines and the serve were very special. Highly sophisticated yet enjoyable and not posh. Excellent description of the wines and beautiful refined setting. This is a perfect place for nice romantic dinners but also special occasions.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food and venue!
My partner and I tried the tasting menu, paired with drinks. We loved every minute of it. The venue to was beautiful, the staff and sommelier super knowledgable and able to advise us when we needed it. One of the highlights of our trip to Edinburgh with unbelievable food and drinks. It is pricey but absolutely worth it. Would recommend this to anyone who appreciated great food!!
