I first visited Thip Khao on a trip to DC almost 7 years ago and while I don't have any specific memories of the experience, I do vaguely remember enjoying the meal. Enjoyed this visit a lot. We arrived at 6:15 on Sunday evening (the day before a federal holiday) and the restaurant was packed. The bar was, however, almost completely empty and when we asked to be sat there we were seated immediately. The service was quick and efficient; my companion ordered a Beer Lao which was just a regular lager and I ordered the Tamarind Juice which was not as concentrated as it should've been and slightly oversweented. We ordered the Naem Khao, which was a crispy rice salad with peanuts and served with fresh lettuce. This dish is was great; simple, filling, and offered nicely contrasting textures between the peanuts, rice, green onion, and lettuce. 5/5I ordered the Moak, a banana leaf wrapped piece of sea bass served with wood ear mushrooms for $27. The piece of fish was flavorful and nicely cooked, though the dill was definitely the most prominent flavor on the fish. The mushrooms were nicely done as well and the sticky rice that it was served with was well cooked. The piece of fish itself was a little smaller than what I would expect at this price, but this was an overall good experience. My companion ordered the Pun Mieng, a rice noodle based dish with colored greens, cabbage, tomatoes, fried tofu, a tangy chili sauce, cucumbers, fried shallots, and peanuts. As a vegatarian, she sometimes finds her choices limited but was able to find a decent range of options on the menu. She thoroughly enjoyed the dish, though she did point out that the tofu was not seasoned (though the crispy texture was very well done) and the collard green leaves were a little small. She rated this a 4/5. Overall, an excellent dining experience, will definitely be visiting again.
