26/10/22 Wednesday late drinks We three middle aged gay guys were meeting a German banker friend in soho for a midweek meal and drink. After the meal in Pollo we wanted a quieter gay pub to have a chat in. Comptons upstairs was unusually noisy with thumping music, Duke of Wellington similarly. Both had no tables free. The Yard upstairs in the Loft was our nearest choice (having all been there in the opening night many years ago!) and in we went. The clientele downstairs has become more mixed, lots of straight couples. The decor was decked out for Halloween, quite expensively. Some decorations reminded me of The Hoist...'nuf said.... Upstairs we hoped for a quieter more male crowd but were again in a mixed crowd with blaring music. We did find a table opposite the bar, just, sharing with a trio of gay guys. A bit of a squeeze. Drinks everyone? Four beers. Up to the bar I went with my iPh Applepay. I thought the house beers (Yard Session IPA and Yard Lager) might be cheaper than the Continental offerings on tap (no real ales unfortunately as this is aimed at the younger crowd). I ordered two of each, taking the first three to my friends. There IPA barrel ran out so another was hooked up and after five minutes I got the (my) fourth pint. My card reader was presented and it was £27.72. I was offered the receipt... on returning to the table I examined the receipt which had automatically 5% service added!!! For bar service!!!!! I had not had a chance to get the bill first and deduct the 'service'. The waitress was pleasant enough and along with her colleague were very busy. No complaints there, just about the non discretionary service. Our German (a banker remember) friend was amazed at the price, as it was much more than he is used to in a London pub! He felt guilty as it was my 'round' (on a meagre pension) and it was nearly half the cost of an entire meal for four with a beer each in Pollo's! We struggled to make conversation in the noisy din and left after our drinks were finished. As you can expect we are unlikely to return! Looking at other reviews since I think there management may have lost their a lot of their gay crowd, no doubt the straights will keep it going, even in these days of the cost of living crisis! Some other reviews quoted a 10% service charge, maybe the management reduced it as custom declined or unfavourable reviews dominated?
