Very average.
A beautiful place, lovely surroundings and very friendly staff. The food was average at best, below average at £24 each. Sunday lunch, beef and pork loin. Beef was 2 thin pre cut, small slices, pork was a thick cut slice of which a third of it was too fatty to eat. Veg was OK, not great. Meat comes out with gravy pre poured? Why? Pork had a cream honey and mustard sauce poured over everything which was totally over powering, far too much and pre bloody poured, WHY? I will decide where it goes and how much I want, very annoying. Had high hopes but somewhere I'm not likely to return to in a hurry.

Went for Mother's Day and they were able to fit us in with only a couple of week's notice. Food was mostly good, however we had a vegan with us who wasn't wowed by her option. Not much choice for fussy son who ended up with a fish starter for his main, which was far too salty - I tasted it. Complained to 2 staff, but was still charged for it. Roast was nice as well as the pork option. Pana cotta pudding was very nice. Staff were pleasant and location is very beautiful - lovely koi carp in the garden pond.
Be the first to ReplyUnhelpful and Rude
I wanted to get some more information about holding a large dinner party at the Rose and Crown in May, which is why I filled in the online form as requested by a member of staff. After 2 weeks I had not had a response so I phoned the pub. The gentleman who answered the phone was very polite but the lady he was talking to, presumably the landlady was extremely rude and couldn't be bothered to talk to me - she just said we have not got a date and tell her we can't do it . No apology for not responding to my enquiry, dreadful customer service. So, based on this experience, why even bother going trying to book something with them, they obviously don't need our custom.!!

From the minute we walked through the door we were welcomed and felt completely relaxed. The atmosphere was wonderful, lots of locals as well as us. The food was extraordinary and the staff were well informed and incredibly friendly. The rooms are wonderful and the views beyond compare. None of us wanted to leave.

Went out for a meal with my husband on the 30th of December. I husband checked when he booked that they catered for Gluten free. We went at 7.30 as they said they were going to be busy at 8.30 the time we wanted to book. We arrived and out of all the tables were sat by a door , so everytime people came in out We froze. We had to ask for a Gluten free menu and when it arrived it was just the normal menu with half of it crossed out. For his starter my husband had the Pate with a brioche. When it arrived the Pate with what looked like a charcoal brickect. Thankfully my husband had ordered bread as side. He did query the black lump of coal and was told this was how it was supposed to be. The remains of the coal was taken out to the kitchen where we could here the chef ranting at the waitress that my husband had no right to complain, he was uncultured and he was probably the kind of man who ordered chips with his Spaghetti bolognese. Our mains arrived ,The steak was lovely and cooked to perfection. The triple cooked chips looked like they were McCains. Plus I only one choice of dessert on the Gluten free menu. We were expecting the restaurant to be packed as they got us in early but there was only us and 2 other parties there. We felt rushed, the staff didn't seemed bothered about us, so we left totally disappointed after hearing such good things.
Be the first to ReplyTypical Country Pub
A typical country pub in an old building serving locals and visitors. Staff were excellent and helpful. We were there for a birthday lunch and stayed the night, returning home the next day. Plenty of free parking on site and a substantial breakfast included in the price of the room. A large garden with views over the surrounding farmland. Lunch was somewhat disappointing and my steak was tough. The light meals in the evening were more interesting and better. The en-suite room was OK. The fitted sheet and mattress cover were too small. After a couple of hours, they'd both come off. Unless you know the area, you might struggle to find it down various rural lanes. Approaching from the A303, these were narrow and extensively flooded. Easier from the A30. Despite the address, it is closer to Yeovil - not the best of locations for visiting either but if you want quiet in the countryside, idel.

The Rose and Crown is beautifully situated in quiet countryside. It is a charming old pub with comfortable rooms. The cooking is excellent, varied and imaginative and the welcome is good. A bit of a treasure.

An outstanding experience. From the moment we walked in the door we received a very warm welcome. The food and drink was exceptional, all created and served by wonderfully kind and friendly people. The attention to detail throughout was was superb. The rooms are beautifully equipped and have their own little patio area where you can sit and enjoy the superb scenery. Your canine companions are also made very welcome at this establishment. I highly recommend all the Rose and Crown has to offer.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful country pub
We booked to stay overnight at The Rose and Crown during a mini break in Dorset. We were greeted by friendly staff and a few woofs from Chip the dog! Our room was lovely and beautifully furnished with a substantial bathroom and our own private garden. Unfortunately due to the rain we weren’t able to enjoy it. The main pub garden was beautiful and well maintained with lovely views. We enjoyed a delicious meal in the restaurant and the service from the staff was excellent. We would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend it
Be the first to ReplyThe Perfect Country Pub?
This must be just about the perfect Country pub; thatched and tiled roof, flag-stone floors, nooks and crannies, welcoming and helpful staff, good range of drinks, and food, beautiful gardens with extensive countryside views, and excellent bedrooms. I would have been so pleased to award it 5 stars but, alas, 3 of us 4 diners could not taste a fluid ounce of rum in the RumBaba although the Chef assured us that rum had been applied and, had a Caribbean Coffee then been offered, then 5 stars would surely have been awarded. The Menu tends towards gastro.
Be the first to ReplyRural gem
This is a hidden gem of a pub, with well priced accommodation. We stayed in one of the 3 rooms each of which has it own private patio overlooking the garden and countryside beyond. The room was spacious and well equipped, with a very large bathroom, large bath, walk-in rainfall shower and other modern fittings. The staff were exceptionally polite and friendly, offering a good range of beers, wines etc. The food was a little above the average price for a pub but well worth the money for the outstanding quality. Breakfast was also of a high standard and freshly prepared. Just 10 minutes from Sherborne, this makes a good alternative to the town's accommodation.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful rooms and pub, dog friendly too
We had a fab nights stay in May. Our room was large, clean, modern (beautifully furnished) and a great walk-in shower too. Sometimes a dog friendly room is a bit worn and not the best, but the opposite here, we had a gorgeous room with access straight onto the garden. As it is so rural there weren't large crowds of guests so it was fairly quiet and relaxing. The pub is also cosy and a great find, thatched roof and stone floors with excellent ales. My brother and family joined us from Shaftsbury for a meal and they loved it too. They accommodated all our food needs (inc a cautious coeliac and vegan eaters too) . Breakfast was great choices and fresh, no veggie breakfast but enough options to keep us both happy. I hope to come back one day when back in the area, thanks for a perfect end to our holiday.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely Fabulous
We recently dined at the Rose and Crown in Trent, Somerset. To say the meal was absolutely fabulous would be an understatement. It was superb. In fact the whole evening was exceptional. We were greeted and attended to by a friendly and professional staff and were quickly seated in a very pleasantly appointed area of what is a beautifully situated Inn. We were soon enjoying some very palatable wine awaiting the arrival of the first course. And wow, what a starter! In fact, that was the beginning of an extremely impressive and highly enjoyable culinary experience. As we were a small family group we tried small samples of each other’s choices. Everything I tried was delicious and beautifully presented by waitresses who were very attentive and efficient. The combination of flavours and textures in all I tasted were truly amazing. I would have very much welcomed an opportunity to personally complement the chef, Morgan, on his tour de force but understandably, as we were dining relatively early in a restaurant bustling with customers, he was extremely busy. The whole evening was a triumph and we shall return in the very near future for more of the same. The Rose and Crown at Trent comes with my highest recommendation. It is truly excellent.

We had a lovely experience at this venue, exceptional food with great attention to detail. Very friendly staff and atmosphere. The pub is very well positioned in a rural village with a cosy warm feel inside. The chef is very talented and his team around him work very well.
Be the first to ReplyComfortable winter break
We stayed here for a couple of nights in January. Room was comfortable, with a nice outlook. Pub was warm and the menu was interesting and unusual - hearty portions, well presented. Beer was in excellent condition. Staff very friendly and efficient. And excellent breakfasts, both cooked and continental .
Be the first to ReplyWhat a pub Sunday lunch should be
I'm not a fan of pub Sunday roasts. Watery gravy, Yorkshire puddings out of a packet and tasteless food are all too common. This pub addresses all those issues and then some. The wait for the food isn't lengthy but underlines the individual preparation of each meal. The servers were friendly, attentive but not intrusive and there was a positive happy vibe about the whole pub that was quite rightly full. I understand the chef has brought his skills from an upmarket up country establishment. It shows. No fussy food sitting lonely on your plate but filling portions very well cooked. Just a shame its not nearer home.

Excellent food and service
Visited a couple of times recently and have been so impressed with the level of food and service. Best in the area.
Outstanding menu and everyone made us feel so welcome.
Definitely worth a visit.

Delightful
We stayed overnight to go to a nearby family party so didn’t eat dinner but breakfast was delicious - yummy croissants, good coffee and cooked food to order, all served with a smile. Our bedroom was modern and comfortable, with a big bath as well as shower cubicle and a sitting out area with table and bench looking over the pretty garden to the rural scene beyond.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place with amazing views over the countryside
We stayed here for one night last week on the way to Cornwall. Our room had a small private terrace overlooking the very well landscaped gardens and then rolling hills. The service was very good as was the food both at dinner and the following morning at breakfast. Have a look around the church opposite if you have the time.
Be the first to ReplyWow, a hidden piece of loveliness
Have to say this place is one of the nicest places we have stayed recently, having travelled a lot round the country for my sons golf competitions, lovely rooms with luxury touches and the food is just WOW. Thank for the great hospitality and friendly welcome. We WILL definitely be back.
