A complete disater
We were three couples with great enthusiasm to enjoy and we found treatment from the staff bordering on rudeness, very weak food and expensive prices. Just the photo from the outside is worth it and can be done without having to endure all the bad things.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Experience
One of the most exotic places I've been. Staff very friendly and very good food. have the opportunity, in my 50ยฐ anniversary, to lunch in this place, WOW!!
Be the first to Replywonderful experience of nature, organization, good food
I have admired this enchanting place for years It has always aroused a lot of curiosity in me I was right charm, good food, excellent hospitality
Be the first to ReplyStupendous
Stunning location, fantastic food, difficult to find something similar around the world. Excellent price quality. Friendly and helpful owner. Thank you ....
Be the first to ReplyDelicious and beautiful
I ate the best vanilla gnochis of my life! This restaurant is so unusual but it's worth the detour! Very well indicated if you come with a rental car $30/day. Meals are a little more expensive than in Europe but we loved it!!
Be the first to ReplyExcursion postponed
Incredible kindness and hospitality, I found a family environment full of friendliness. We stopped during an excursion, but we enjoyed it so much we decided to stay at The Rock until the evening. Excellent aperitif with breathtaking view, in short I recommend everyone to stop by!

Incredibly nice place and relatively good food. But the surroundings were definitely worth a trip. I would definitely go again. I had a couscous dish that tasted pretty good, I wasn't too keen on their fish n chips.
Be the first to Replyto do but without expecting too much...
magnificent place, professional staff, presentation of the dishes is original, we enjoy it but it is true that as many say, the value for money is not there.
Be the first to ReplyA trip to Zanzibar
We actually visited in 2018. This time could not be selected in the selection!! The Rock "must" in Zanzibar. We going to the restaurant by boat. Came back with dry feet:)
Be the first to ReplyUgh
The prices charged absolutely do not justify the (nice) setting and the quality of the food served. They benefit from the reputation given to them by tour operators who themselves benefit from it
Be the first to ReplyGood food, special exterior and great service.
Food was excellent, service was friendly - the owner himself greeted all guests and checked up on them. Exterior and atmosphere are very special. I would like to thank the crew for celebrating girlfriendโs birthday with us and bringing an awesome chocolate birthday cake with candles on it. Overall very happy with the experience, would suggest this venue.
Be the first to ReplyNo so exclusive as expected
The food was wonderful but it didnโt look like the pictures on the website. The website gives the idea that the restaurant is very exclusive. The real thing is that the place was packed with tables and people. Even people dressed not correctly, in almost swimming outfits. For us it felt like a tourist trapp on a wonderful spot.
Be the first to ReplyNice place, not very good food
The food was nowhere near where it needed to be for the price of eating here. I had the fish, because Zanzibar is famous for fish. However, it was very dry and chewy. It was sold as "catch of the day", but it tasted like frozen fish to me. The potatoes were just sliced potatoes. They were ok, but more like what you get at a diner. For a $100 for two, I would expect better. On the plus side, it is a nice place. The place is packed for some reason, so I guess they have no need to serve better food or lower their prices. To be honest, if I owned the restaurant, I wouldn't change a thing. As a business, it is certainly doing well (the owner is some kind of genius to keep it as busy as it is with so many other dining choices). All I'm saying is that if it is good food you are after, this is not the place.
Be the first to ReplyNice place
This is a unique place , built on a rock arising out of the sand, we visited as part of a day trip around the souther part of Zanzibar, when we visited we could walk across the sand and access easily, I understand at high tide you either have to wade through the water or a courtesy boat is provided. Lovely pleasant place to enjoy the surroundings and nave a cooling drink, menu looked good and would have been happy to order food if needed but we had eaten earlier
Be the first to ReplyAmazing place
Amazing. Good food and the staff does a great job. Very windy in the night we went, but all good. I highly recomend because its a great experience to have in Zanzibar
Be the first to ReplyGreat location
The experience of the photoshoot that we have every day are amazing..The next location we had of flying dresses photoshoot was near the rock restaurant beach on the dhow boat with the view of the rock restaurant. The restaurant is one of the unique places in Zanzibar must visit .The best time to visit the restaurant is on mid tide hours so as you can explore it when it high tide and low tide.Check on google for tides.Reservations must be done before having to go in to the restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyAvoid!! Just take a picture and leave.
Just take a picture and go eat somewhere else! I cant stress enough how much you should not eat here! The rock looks fantastic, we got some lovely pictures, but from there it goes downhill. We were on day 2 of our honeymoon, booked the rock in advance and went there expecting to make some memories. 3 days after that and we are still running to the toilet, and now on antibiotics until the end of our honeymoon so cant enjoy our amazing hotel, cocktails, champagne, food, trips etc. We are absolutely devastated. I cannot say strongly enough how much you need to avoid eating here, it was either the lobster we ate or the ice cubes in our cocktails, either way our once in a lifetime trip is ruined and we will never be able to get this back. I'm not interested in any reply the restaurant has to this message, your food is a rip off, your service is cold and as stated above, you completely ruined our once in a lifetime trip and honeymoon that we have been planning for years.
Be the first to ReplyI became ill.. Contacted them within 24 hrs
I became ill within 24 hrs of making my reservations, I made a reservations for this place and cancelled it 24 hrs before the time. I sent an email, I called, and sent message through WhatsApp. I checked the cancellation policy only to get a message that state my pre ordered cake was already made and the refund $26 isn't refundable. Now if that is not fishy I don't why you would make my cake before 24 hrs before I arrive. I am aware that the cakes are already made and they are taken out of freezer.. It seems like a bad move for $26... I became ill that is only reason why I decided not to go to this restaurant. Just thought I let others know.. Even if the policy states 24 hrs they will try to alter their own policy to not give you your money back. There is nothing about premade desserts being made 24 hrs ahead of time that's non-refundable.. Who would want a dessert made a double or two earlier than your actually reservation anyway?
Be the first to ReplyNot to be missed
The location of this restaurant is so unique that you cannot miss it. We were able to walk from the beach because it was low tide, it would have been nice also to be able to reach it by boat. We chose the restaurant because of its location but we were also pleasantly surprised by the food and the friendliness of the staff.
Be the first to ReplyGreat location, average food, poor service, big price
This place looks like a dream restaurant. Unbelievably picturesque location, and to be fair if you look it up beforehand you know itโs going to be pricey and subject to some time pressure. What we didnโt expect was the at best average quality of food, and rushed, almost monosyllabic service. So disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyA wonderful experience
Absolutely fantastic!! The view is just stunning and the scenery changes as the tide comes in. The lobster was perfect and there was a lot of it!! The service is really good. Sit on the terrace with a drink while waiting for your food. Will definitely come again.
Be the first to ReplyFood and location are excellent
The food and all the experience was super incredible, but the prices are very high and is definitely a very expensive restaurant. You can pay with card and don't have to pay any fees.

This place really seems to divide opinion so do your research and decide whether itโs for you before you go. It deserves reviews which donโt moan about things which are in the public domain. Yes, you need to book ahead. Yes, you only have 2 hours but that is sufficient time to have 3 courses without being rushed. Yes, itโs quite expensive but look at the menu and prices before you go. Bear in mind that this is a small yet very popular destination with a limited window each day during which to serve customers. The sun sets around 7.00 in July after which there is no view to entice customers in. Also remember that itโs a restaurant on a rock whose access is affected by tides - a factor which will undoubtedly increase logistics and running costs. All that aside if, having done your research, you decide to visit I am sure you wonโt regret it. The setting makes for a totally unique and idyllic dining experience. A small but interesting menu was well cooked, quirkily presented and served without fuss. Dessert is served on the back deck which enables you to enjoy the view more fully before you leave. We dined from 2.00 - 4.00 which meant we waded out in ankle deep water along the path and caught the boat back to shore. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at The Rock and it certainly warrants a good review. Thanks to other reviewers who advised us to request a window table when booking rather than one in the centre to give a better view. We did so and got what we asked for. If booking a transfer this can easily be done at the time of booking ($25 return from Breezes hotel) but it may be cheaper to ask your hotel to organise this aspect.

We buggered up our booking. Instead of booking for 4 people we only booked for 2. The restaurant was busy and filling up, so we thought they would turn our party (or at least two of us away). Instead, the manager/Head waiter (Reddy), a charming Italian man, ushered us to the patio and told us he would find a way to accommodate us. All we had to do was endure some tropical cocktails. Needless to say we obliged, whilst taking in the beautiful view of the Indian ocean. They found space for us and dinner was of course amazing. But to be honest the most enjoyable experience for us was talking to Reddy and learning about The Rock's history. Did you know that the restaurant was founded by 2 Italian guys 12 years ago and that the actual rock upon which it's built is rented from a local tribe (of 12 families). To this day, the locals receive rental payment every month. So by eating here, you're actually supporting the local community! Being nosey tourists we asked him about the structure of the restaurant itself and how it's able to withstand storms and squalls. He explained that the roof's shape was designed to withstand high winds and that it was made by an engineer from Kenya who specialises in this area. We sipped our post diner coffees and looked around the restaurant. All customers had left and the staff were putting away tables and chairs. We were so enthralled by Reddy's stories that we had not noticed the time slip away. Dining at the Rock was a special experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Paje. If you want to get more bang for your buck then find Reddy and listen to the history of this magical place.
Be the first to ReplyA truly unqiue Zanzibarian experince
Having read the previous reviews of The Rock, we were keen to approach our visit with an open mind.
We actually ended up visiting twice in our 6 day stay.
Now, firstly, yes, the restaurant is iconic on the East Coast and you do wonder how they actually managed to construct it etc.
Depending on the time you go and the tide, it is either an easy walk across the sand or can involve a boat ride with a dedicated team.
The menu is a mix of local cuisine, Italian and well, just an interpretation of recipes that they can produce!
The first visit we ordered a tempura starter and it was not great. Carpaccio of tuna with coconut milk, lime and chili was fantastic - super fresh and tasty.
Grilled Lobster (500gram) was the star of the visit.
I will summarise it as follows - The Rock is striving to be the best it can be. The staff are all from the local village. The local fisherman provide the catch.
They donate money to local charities to enhance and improve peoples lives in the community.
If you are looking for a Michellin Star experience then I really dop not know why you are even in Zanzibar.
If you want to enjoy a relaxing meal in a unique location that is making a difference in the community, then give it a try.
Are they perfect - nope, not even close.
Do they know this - yes, they do not hide their mistakes as they are on a journey that you should travel and enjoy and support them in.
We will be back!
