Really enjoyable dinner
A short walk from London Liverpool Street Station, I visited here with a friend for my birthday. My friend was desperate to sample Chef Thomas' food, and we were in luck, because he was working and it was his last weekend there. They brought us out some beautiful Gougeres complimentary. We enjoyed a range of cocktails. To start, my friend had the seabream, rhubarb, cucumber and horseradish, whilst I had the leek fondue. We shared a specialty from the chef; a beef salad which was beautiful. I really enjoyed the Hake with Kohl Rabi, Turnips and Mussels. My friend had the duck, carrot, black garlic and pickled rose. For dessert I had the blood orange, fennel and buttermilk, my friend opted for the visually stunning rhubarb souffle. Overall, service was very good, despite them being exceptionally busy. Pace of service was great, quality of food brilliant. Good value food, would visit again. If you get seated upstairs, don't drink too much- coming down the spiral staircase is a little hair raising!
Be the first to ReplyWork lunch
My four work colleagues and I had lunch at the Princess : choosing the £28.00 set menu for 3 courses; what an experience it turned out to be. The food was delicious and full of flavour; the Chocolate mousse and Hazelnut financier was truly scrumptious and very different from anything I had tasted before. The service was exceptional, add this restaurant to the places to eat; you will not be disappointed. A big shout out to the Chef; you made five foodies very happy.
Be the first to ReplySunday Roast Tasty
We heard this was one of the best pubs for food in London and we were not disappointed. Very stylish pub with a nice menu. It was a Sunday so the menu was Sunday Roast. The food was excellent and would highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced Pub
On arrival, the restaurant was extremely loud, and we had to hussle through the crowd. We were taken to our table, a very close, tight, not restaurant table, but pub table. Our coats were not offered to be taken. We ordered food with our waitress before anyone asked us for a drink, and a drinks order was taken swiftly afterwards. The bread box was extremely good. The bread is warm & delicious, accompanied by 2 flavour butters. Starters are the same, simple but delicious. The main course took what seemed a lifetime to arrive & was disappointing. Presentation poor and the food far too rich. I could not finish. I had a side of carrots for £6.50! And they were nothing special. Although the waiting staff were polite and busy, they were not as attentive as i would have liked. We opted for the bill rather than the dessert menu. By this time, the pub was so loud that i couldn't hear my partner across the table, and it gave me a headache. I'm disappointed i shall not be returning, unfortunately. Shame because we have been looking forward to this restaurant for many years .
Be the first to ReplyNot festive and ok food
The food was average and there was nothing amazing about it. The venue itself was empty with about 7/8 other people there. It didn’t feel very festive considering it was the 23rd Dec. There wasn’t a great atmosphere and the service was just ok. I would I have expected more. Overall the experience was fine but I would not go back
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointing Christmas Lunch for my staff.
A very disappointing experience for my staff Christmas Luncheon. A scenario of production line parties, in and out with a loss of attention to detail. Cold dishes, forgotten dishes, unappetising looking dishes. They forgot my pre ordered dessert wine, no coffees offered to any of my 19 guests. The cheese board i pre ordered arrived as a bite of unripe brie ...........then presented with a bill and told my time was up and the next party of people was already arriving. What a shame, really unhappy and let down. I wouldn't recommend this venue. certainly not for a Christmas party. The staff were very understanding and Angus the manager very accommodating.
Be the first to ReplyNot longer a nice gastro pub
As soon as you walk in, rather than being greeted warmly, you are reminded of the return time. We ordered drinks and a few minutes later we ordered our food. The food arrived before our drinks so we asked if we could have our drinks first and asked the food to be sent back to the kitchen. Within a minute our drinks arrived the food was back on the table. Meaning we did not get a chance to enjoy our aperitifs first. The roast beef has seen better day. It used to be good quality meat and generously served with vegetables and nice roasted potatoes.Unfortunately that is no longer the case. The beef was pretty tasteless and dry, like the potatoes. As soon as our plates were cleared, the waitress came and , out of nowhere, reminded us of our return time and that we should order quickly our desserts. We actually still had 30 minutes and she got it wrong by saying 20 minutes. We pointed out this it her and she walked away. I am sorry there has been such a lack of experienced staff in the UK in the last few years, this has affected massively the restaurant experience . I am eating less and less out when in London and prefer to spend my money when going abroad.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible dinner
Terrible dinner. Dirty restrooms, drunk people, noise as I never saw. Poor menu. But nice service . Everything included for 180 pounds. The far you go from there the better for you .
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and staff
Lovely quiet restaurant upstairs on Saturday night with attentive and friendly staff and really delicious food.
Be the first to ReplyReally disappointing Xmas meal for >£100 a head.
So disappointing. The whole place smells of stale beer, first pint served was off and then meal was super average with half a plate of main course…three tiny slices of dry turkey, 2 Brussels sprouts and not much else. Bill was £760 for 7…no where close to worth that. 2 stars just because of the Xmas spirit
Be the first to ReplyDecent upmarket Sunday roast
We had a nice upmarket Sunday roast. The nut roast was a little disappointing but the veggie gravy was great. The pub was nice (in an upmarket rather than homely way).
Be the first to ReplySunday lunch at his best
Very busy gastro pub with amazing roast lunch. The roast sirloin was perfectly well cooked, medium rare and very tasty. The roast vegetables , potatoes and the cauliflower are to die for… The decor has a very cosy feeling, it can feel a bit too busy if you want to have a conversation but then, it is a successful pub. The menu is somehow limited however everything the kitchen cook is well executed . ‘la soumade ‘red wine from the Rhône’s valley was outstanding for the price .
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed
Atmosphere lovely, service lovely just a little disappointed with the food. First course was ace, we had 3 different starters between 4 and they were excellent. We had the beef and lamb for main. Not practically good quality as we all said how tough it was. More appropriate cutlery would have helped. Main course also arrived warm and could have done being on a warmer plate. Cheese plate needed a little more taste to it. So sorry but this was our second visit within 12 months and just found this it to be no comparison with our first.
Be the first to ReplyBirthday Dinner
So……. This is a mixed review and is purely based on our experience but also, we heard other tables dining on that night, experience similar issues. It’s mostly down to the lack of staff that they had working. I did take the time to email them directly, with a really positive email but detailing our issues. That was over a week ago and I’ve not had a response. The food was nice. I wasn’t overwhelmed and I was expecting more, especially as it’s on the Michelin Good Guide. The food was well executed, by started was the soup, it was fine. Our mains were both cold, served on cold plates in a cold dining room. We didn’t have dessert. The drinks took ages and the service was painfully slow. Shame.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing night
Such an warm and welcoming place. Friendly staff and amazing food, I couldn’t recommend this place enough. I have read some of the other reviews and I have come to the conclusion that there some people will moan about anything. The food was beautiful, with plentiful portions. Of special note is the Beef cooked for ages which my wife had and immediately gave me food envy!! It was our 25th wedding anniversary weekend and they even did something special for that which just topped of the night. Will definitely be back!!
Be the first to ReplyDelicious Sunday lunch.
We ate here last Sunday and had a very enjoyable lunch. The starters were on the small side but delicious and as part of a three course lunch the size was not a problem. The roast potatoes were fabulous- crunchy and tasty. The turkey was a generous portion and the offer of more veg was welcome but not needed. The crumble to follow was also very good. Service throughout was excellent - friendly and professional. A nice experience.
Be the first to ReplyMarathon Portions
While Becky ran the marathon on Sunday friends treated me to the Princess. Former chef of the Crown Burchetts’s Green is Chef here now and I’ve been keen to see how he’s getting along. Trencherman’s starters are top quality, Rillette, Soup etc Main course roasts huge with lashings of delicious gravy, then delicate Lemon Meringue. Reasonable prices for trendy Shoreditch. Highly recommend Bonwicks cooking.

Such an amazing food. Rustic and delicious all served carefully with smile. All staff been taking care of us through our special night. We had beef cooked for ages and celeriac risotto finished with shaved truffle. Will be back soon!
Be the first to ReplyTasteless
Best part was the cold starter, pate……when I booked I thought we would have been seated in the dining room upstairs, however, we were seated downstairs on a wobbly table. This was rectified by the lovely waitress by putting something under the offending leg! My view, from this table, facing towards the window were the bins!! Why not put some frosting over the glass, enough to cover that view. As for the mains, I opted for the slow cooked beef….it looked lovely, rich gravy….unfortunately, it was tasteless…how can you slow cook something which turns out tasteless!, We ordered side vegetables and Gruyère topped mash….again, the vegetables reminded me of frozen veg, totally tasteless…Chef needs to find some seasoning. It was not just me, my partner tasted mine and agreed. As for my partners fish, nice big piece, well over cooked and no sauce!! The waitress was lovely, apologised that we didn’t enjoy our meal and took our cocktails off the bill.
Be the first to ReplyNIce Sunday Roast!
My friend and I got there on a Sunday, so we tried the roasts. My friend took the beef and I got pork. The meat was rather nice, but the beef portion was a little small. Yorkshire pudding was rather oily; no problems with veggies and drinks. Service was good too. We had no booking, so they asked us to eat at the bar, even though we could see some free tables...I know that may be just people that canceled their booking, so I won't consider that for the review. For dessert, we shared a soufflé, but we have not finished it as it was a little too sweet for our taste. All in all, it was a good lunch. If I find myself again around Shoreditch, I may give it another go.
Be the first to ReplyThe Fabulous Ruth Hansom…!
If you haven’t been here, you must! The cooking from Ruth Hansom is amazing and really better than many fine dining restaurants in London. The intimate setting on the first floor of a pub in Shoreditch comes with its own uniqueness and is a bit quirky, but the food is just fantastic. We have the 8 course tasting menu and it was one of the best meals of all time… Well done Ruth! Fabulous
Be the first to ReplyNot the experience we expected
We were shown to our table 10 minutes later than the reservation time. Please in the same group size walking in without a reservation were seated before us. Had to wait 35 minutes to get our starters, then another 40 minutes for our mains. Had to ask twice where our food was no staff were forthcoming to let us know. The water was warm that was used to top up our glasses which was only done at the start of our meal. Had to ask for drinks during the meal as no one was attentive enough to ask or even check of the meal was ok after it was eventually served. We were over charged on the bill, I had to get this amended. The discretionary 13% service charge was not earned. It wasn't a good experice unfortunately.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent, food, wine, venue and service
We did the five course taster menu and were not disappointed. Every course was delicious, I do wish that we had booked in for the 8 course and if we visit this part of London again would certainly book in for it. The service along with the food was first class and we left the choice of wine up to our waiter to choose and he chose well. Loved the venue and the music which was not too loud so we were able to have a conversation easily . The restaurant was quiet which was an added bonus for us and they had been very helpful in accommodating us when we asked to change the time. Would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone staying in the area.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the VERY BEST tasting menus in London
I love eating out (2-3 times a week maybe). The tasting menu upstairs here was next on my list and, given the relatively inexpensive £79 for the longer 8 course option I was curious to see how this menu was going to compare to others at £50-£100 more. Bluntly - I was blown away. My dining companion and I were looking at each other tasting each course and marvelling at how delicious each one was. It genuinely was that good all the way through to the end. There was real restaint and a light touch across all of the beautiful dishes - the pea mousse and asparagus was mindblowingly good and the squash/goat curd ravioli - gosh, was this actually the best ravioli course I have ever eaten?!! Highly likely! Even the bread course was stunning! Service was exemplary. We had a very last minute change and the team was so accommodating. Top notch. Cannot give it highter praise.
Be the first to ReplyVery very good
An unexpected delight. I booked at very short notice for a table of 8 for dinner. Staff were very accommodating and there was a nice buzz downstairs but were all blown away by the food. Very sophisticated, subtle and inventive. Clearly the same ambitious thinking has gone into the wine list with some serious names and well chosen offbeat producers too. Apparently the upstairs menu is better yet We’ll be back.
