Not dog friendly
Can someone explain how this place can call itself “Canine friendly” when dogs are not allowed in the bar, restaurant or lounge. That means human residents cannot use the bar, restaurant or lounge unless they leave the dog in the room, which most dog friendly hotels do not recommend and is definitely not dog friendly. Why not just state upfront dogs not welcome.
Be the first to ReplyNew Year Treat
We enjoyed last years New Years Eve package so much that we came back this year, staying for 3 nights. Again our high expectations were exceeded with fantastic food and service. The special New Year’s Eve menu in particular was exceptional. We stayed in room 15 overlooking the garden at the rear which was lovely however the bathroom was very small. The shower over the bath was not ideal due to the small size of the shower screen. There was also a very faint hum of the extractor fans from the kitchens as we were at the end of the building. It didn’t bother us as such but if we’d had the windows open then it would have been louder. The restaurant was excellent at adapting dishes to accommodate my husbands gluten intolerance however we were not impressed that they ran out of gluten free bread after only our first night and they made no attempt to get any more. This was a particular pain at breakfast. Upon our visit to Bakewell one day we bought a loaf at the co-op and took some with us to breakfast on our last day for them to toast. Whilst we were happy to do this we felt that given the standards of the hotel and price we were paying it could easily have been avoided. That said we thoroughly enjoyed our stay again in this lovely hotel. We were made to feel very welcome and lots of staff commented that we were returning guests from last NYE which was a nice touch. We would hope to return again.

Agree with everything on the review below. Staff are awesome, welcoming and friendly. Can't do enough for you without being over bearing. Food is amazing and lovely roaring open fire. Had a wonderful evening thank you

Simply fantastic in every way. Staff were awesome and could not do enough to assist. Rooms were amazing and we were given an upgrade which was stunning, I'm a bit puzzled why the Restaurant doesn't have at least 2 Michelin Stars. Will definitely be back.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food in fine dining restaurant
We stayed two nights in a four poster room. The room overlooked the road but the double glazing was effective at keeping it quiet. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and the meal was exquisite. There was so much detail in every dish with so many different tastes. One of the best meals we have ever had. Breakfast was freshly cooked and you could order whatever you liked. We prefer a buffet style for the cereals, fruit, yoghurts etc but these could be requested. The hotel is local to lots of lovely walks such as towards Chatsworth along the river. There is lots to see and do. The second night we ate in the bar which has a nice atmosphere. We were a bit disappointed in the bar food but that maybe after the amazing restaurant food on the first night. Overall a peaceful and relaxing stay which we really enjoyed.
Be the first to ReplyA bit disappointing
We booked on the strength of reviews, and were somewhat disappointed. We booked the superior 4 poster room- and it was much smaller than expected- not a generously sized bedoom. Breakfast options were good, we didn't dine in the evening there. I didn't feel this was value for money or a particularly 'wow' experience. Dog friendly, which is obviously a plus for dog owners though and very close to some lovely stately home/estates. If I travelled to the area again however, I would stay elsewhere
Be the first to ReplyPoor customer care
I booked this hotel several months ago to attend a wedding and was looking forward to staying there. I planned to stay for three nights to ensure I had ample time to prepare for the wedding. Unfortunately the first night was cancelled due to staff shortages. This caused me a lot of stress and anxiety as I didn’t know the area and had to find somewhere else to stay. I thought the hotel should have offered me alternative suggestions where to stay. I requested if I could access the hotel on the day of the wedding slightly earlier to get ready as the one we were staying in I had to vacate at 11. I informed them the wedding was at 1.30, but I was told I could come at 3. Which I think was totally unreasonable. I feel that the hotel lacked compassion for the circumstances they had created and should of been more accommodating! I was very disappointed in their response and expected a higher quality of customer care. The two nights I did stay was some what ruined by this experience. The room was clean with views over the garden. The staff I came into contact with were very friendly and polite. The breakfast was good.
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointing
Booked a superior room - nothing superior about it except the bed was king size - but the cheap linens and polyester duvet felt anything but luxurious. Even walking into the room through a cheap door that felt like a small cupboard (nothing to do with maintaining character and charm) you knew you’d be disappointed. We weren’t shown to our room, just pointed in direction of, or offered assistance with luggage. The bathroom was very basic and so tiny you can’t both go in at the same time. When I went back to the reception to say the room was unacceptable (at £350 per night) the man was disinterested and unhelpful . Dinner was average. Breakfast was a joke. My ‘freshly squeezed orange juice’ was out a carton and I had to send back my fresh fruit salad because it was obviously leftover from days before. A hotel that is supposedly reputed for the restaurant didn’t even have fresh mint for tea??? And presentation 0 out of 10 - not a garnish or fresh vegetable to be seen. What is good about the Peacock? - its a stunning property.but don’t stay or eat there.
Be the first to ReplyFresh food and excellent service
The Peacock at Rowsley is a charming hotel with lots of ambiance. The rooms are comfortable and furnished with antiques. The hotel is all about good service and we certainly had that. For example, homemade shortbread biscuits and fresh milk were delivered to the room upon request at any time, free of charge. Meal service was friendly and efficient. There is a pretty garden where guests can relax and the bar was particularly cozy and charming. The hotel is located close to the amenities of Matlock and other nearby towns. We would certainly stay here again.
Be the first to ReplyA delightful discovery!
We booked an overnight stay, as a special anniversary gift from our children - it was a delight. Our room was spacious, well-equipped, warm and very clean and the bed was very comfortable (would have preferred feather pillows). The bathroom was small but perfectly adequate. Every member of staff with whom we had contact was friendly and professional, nothing was too much trouble for them in ensuring we had a great stay.
The meal was exemplary, we couldn’t have wished for better. The menu was appealing and interesting, the food was presented beautifully and my gluten-sensitivity was seamlessly taken into account. We had a lovely, well priced bottle of wine. Our only observation was that the ambience in the dining rooms could be improved by a couple of slight changes: the lighting was unattractive and not in keeping with the surroundings and maybe some fresh flowers and/or table lamps on small occasional tables might have softened the appearance of the rooms.
We thought that we received excellent value for money, and will definitely return to this well-run hotel in such a beautiful part of the world.
Absolutely perfect New Year Break!
Following a really tough year of Cancer treatments we booked a 3 night stay at The Peacock over the New Year as a special treat to ourselves, to be spoilt by good food and service in the most beautiful Hotel in our favourite part of the country. Wow! all I can say is that all our expectations were blown out of the water and we had an incredible time.
We stayed in Room 12, a beautiful room overlooking the gardens at the back of the Hotel. Very comfortable and with a SuperKing sized bed. The en-suite was up a few steps (to note if you have mobility issues) and although small was functional (shower over the bath). As previous reviews have said, yes the towel rail was incredibly hot therefore making the bathroom hot, but you can easily switch it off especially at night as we did.
We advised the Hotel in advance that my husband is gluten intolerant and we were incredibly impressed with their attention to this and chef offering to adapt most dishes on the menu for him which meant that there were very few things he couldn’t have. We ate the first night in the bar from the excellent bar menu. The second night (New Years Eve) was a special tasting menu served in the dining room and was truly out of this world. Each of the 8 courses was presented with plenty of time in between and made it a fantastic and very special experience. We have eaten in some nice restaurants in our time but without doubt the food served here at the Peacock is the best we have had in a long time! On New Years Day we also enjoyed dinner in the dining room again from the wonderful á la carte menu. Breakfast each day was also superb.
The staff at the Peacock are a real asset to the Hotel, all very friendly and attentive and couldn’t do enough for us during our stay. We felt incredibly relaxed and refreshed following our stay and grateful that the Peacock has helped in our healing process. We will definitely be back!
Perfect New Years Dinner
What a relief not to cancel our dinner date for New Years Eve
We booked mid July when things with COVID were somewhat different
We have enjoyed The Peacock for many years. The service and quality always remain high and the service and kindness of all the staff , always make you feel great
Good food, poor front of house
Rough start. Welcome wasn’t very welcoming, with the greeting feeling rushed and as if we were annoying the host. Ordering was a bit all over the place. But from when we were seated service at the table improved and the food was served swiftly and to a high standard.
We had the soup to start which was average and wasn’t stated to have bacon in so was surprised having chosen as a vegetarian option! Thankfully i’m not too fussy. Main of baked celeriac was excellent and so was the fish and chips my partner had.
Overall would say it is worth it for the food but not run to as high standard as was expected
Wonderful birthday experience
We stayed overnight for a birthday celebration and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The room was clean and comfortable with good quality tea, coffee, etc. and fresh milk on request - essential for a tea drinker! The staff were efficient, cheerful and helpful and the whole atmosphere was friendly and relaxed.
Dinner was faultless. All courses were excellently prepared and presented. As it was a December birthday we even got crackers! We felt safe Covid-wise throughout.
You can even ask to have the staff run you a candlelit bath!
Breakfast was excellent too, and it rounded off a wonderful birthday experience. Thank you Peacock Hotel!
Shabby not chic!
The Peacock came highly recommended with particular emphasis on the food and my evening meals were exceptional. The restaurant menu offered a wonderful selection, and each course was pure pleasure to the eye and tastebuds. I stayed a few nights and experienced the bar menu also which was equally as good. 5/5
My special room (an upgraded suite) on the other hand was extremely disappointing. Very tired and dull, with rickety old furniture and a small bathroom that was far from luxurious. Breakfast was mediocre and it’s clear that the same level of culinary expertise and attention to detail does not extend to breakfast. 3/5
The staff were friendly and accommodating and the hotel is positioned perfectly for enjoying the beautiful Peak District.
Fantastic Food
We have had many meals at the Peacock over more than 20 years… but our recent visit was outstanding! We celebrated my wife’s birthday together with my son and parents’ in law. The current menu is excellent. The food was as good as many one star restaurants.
The venison looked and tasted Devine. The cep tea and vegetable dish was sensational. The beef main and mackerel starters were very good. There was a duck liver terrine that was like a fine Foire Gras.
The venue itself is great, the ambiance quite rustic: whilst the menu is a bit more expensive than previously; it is certainly worth every penny. Thanks for a wonderful meal
Perfect
Stayed one night in the suite.
Extremely impressed by this hotel - everything was spot on. Fantastic staff, who were friendly and knowledgeable. Lounge and bar are beautifully decorated and cosy, with excellent service. Dinner was delicious and the dining room is a tasteful and welcoming space. Breakfast was very good.
The suite is a fantastic room - the decor is just right, with well chosen furniture, fixtures and fittings. Good sized bathroom and large, comfortable bed. A really nice room to spend the night.
The Peacock at Rowsley is the best hotel I have experienced in the Peak District. Can’t fault anything about it - the management and staff have really put together something perfect here. Will definitely return.
Excellent fine dining experience
WE stayed for dinner, b and b courtesy of our children. I would recommend requesting a main floor room if you don't like steep and narrow stairs - our room was in the attic, and would have been a struggle if we'd had mobility issues. But it was clean and comfortable, although I'm not a fan of over-bath showers. Some reviewers have criticised the old-fashioned furniture, but I feel it suits this style of hotel.
Good things - the complimentary tea when we arrived, complete with massive shortbread biscuit, polite and helpful service and the a la carte dinner menu was superb, with food delicious and beautifully presented. Breakfast was rather plonky by comparison.
It is expensive, but worth it for a treat
Living on past reputation.
One night stay at £260 b&b. Beautiful, characterful building, but the interior needs some tlc and the bedroom was very shabby - a charity shop would not accept the furniture. The bathroom was very small with shower over the bath - not acceptable at this price.
The breakfast was very good & the staff were pleasant & helpful, but I think the hotel itself is overpriced.
