A trip back to 1776!
The 76 house is the real thing uneven floors post and beam revolutionary decor. Very authentic! The food was great! The roast Duck was crispy but moist on the inside the orange sauce was delicious but not enough of it. I should have asked for more. The sweet potato mash was to die for. Could have eaten a bowl of it! Other veggies were great The pot roast was so good cut with a fork. Red cabbage was a great complement. Service was great. Had the bread pudding for dessert. Excellent. Hint of cinnamon in bread with crรจme brรปlรฉe sauce on it. Moist and flavorful. Will go back to try other things on the menu.

First dined at the 76 House in the early 70's. Been back occasionally in the past decade. Always pretty good. Last evening's dinner was a disappointment. We had to dine early to accommodate an ailing friend, so the restaurant was 10% full. Drinks were served quickly. Dinner was served relatively quickly. Crab cake appetizer was tiny, lukewarm and flavorless. Jaeger Schnitzel was good, but lukewarm (and too well done to send back for reheating). Spatzle and red cabbage were cold and flavorless. Rolls were "commercial" and slightly stale. Two "mid-shelf" cocktails were $37.50. Service was friendly and good, but the kitchen needs work and the food and drinks were grossly overpriced for the quality / quantity served.

We went as a group of six for dinner and to hear a band. The service was better than average. Meals were good and the band was very good. The bill however had extra charges. It included more salads then were consumed as well as more drinks then were consumed. There was also a sizable charge for using a credit card and a 20% gratuity, added in the bill. Be aware of what you consume and that the gratuity is already added on the bill.
Be the first to ReplyNice historic building, average food
If you like historic buildings, definitely worth a visit. The food we ordered was very traditional and heavy on the breading. So come for the ambience and history but don't have high expectations for the food offering!
Be the first to ReplyA unique destination with great food and service
Attentive wait staff, delicious food at reasonable prices, and a tavern rich with history. Live music was playing the night we went, which was a nice addition to a great evening.

My girlfriend and I were followed by hostess and server outside after tipping $37 on a $220 bill. We were confronted in front of people as we did not tip. There was a hidden $17 tip that they added, so look for hidden charges when you get your bill ( it is not the sales tax). I added a $20 tip, and that makes a total of $37 which is around the 18% required tip. Mind you, I tipped despite bad service as well as unexceptional food. Now too that with an attempt of embarrassment if front of other guests. I called the manager who was a real as*ho*e. Expect to get bad service and bad food!

For some strange reason we hadn't vis.ited this restaurant in years....Food was excellent, service friendly and competent, ambiance pleasing, entertainment was an added plus. Nothing not to like. Expect to spend $150 for shared appetizer, two mains and a desert
Be the first to ReplyNice place to visit if you're a history buff
Stopped in here for lunch with my family. A lot of history on the walls and great place to walk around. Got there early, so got seated right away. Thought we were good before they opened up the doors to the patio and then it was chilly and we were in a highly trafficked area. Ordered their tavern burger and eggs benedict arnold, along with the kids' meal burger and mac and cheese, which were all pretty good (3.5 stars) for a tavern. This place is slightly higher than pub prices with kids' meals are about $15 per entree and their beer was $10. Staff was nice, but service a little slow.

Our final stop on a historical day trip made the whole long trip worth while. The hostess Connie and owner Rob were than cordial and welcoming. The tavern is located in a nice quiet part of town and you are probably not going to find a more original or authentic tavern of that period. Our dishes were cooked to perfection as well as a pint of local pumpkin ale. This stop is a must for Patriots as well as history lovers.

I got here a bit early before opening. The lady was real nice and told me about the place history and then the owner came down and showed/told me about the place. He brought out a musket and let me hold it that was used in the civil war. He also gave me a taste of a "beer" that the recipe was (Not sure on this) made by G Washington. I had no bubbles, nor beer taste. It was very different. I had the fish plate with FF

The '76 House is truly superb. We loved looking around this historical building with Bob, the owner, who is very proud of his establishment. He arranged for us to sit in the front dining room, which was built in 1668. If you are any bit of a historian, you need to go here.
We had the sirloin steaks, medium rare. These were tender steaks cooked to perfection. We also sampled some of the appetizers including the duck. Perfectly cooked as well.
Ask for the dark craft beers which were the perfect compliment to our dinner.
There was live music as well.
I love a good dinner but I also like ambience and things to look at. Here is the best of the best. Pleasant and professional service, great food and history. The best.
Wonderful Experience!
Tried this place for the first time and was genuinely impressed. We were here for a retirement event but everyone ordered from the regular menu. The scallops were suggested to me by a long time customer and, loving scallops they way I do, I went along with his suggestion. Stuffed clams, mussels, soups, pot roast, ribs and schnitzel were ordered by others at the table. They guys loved the soups and mussels. I tried the stuffed clams and they were delicious, although there was only one small piece of clam to a lot of stuffing. The stuffing was the 2nd best I'd ever had so I would not hesitate to get them again. The pot roast came out and looked as if someone's mother had made it. The guy having said that he didn't need teeth to eat it! The Schnitzel came out and looked so good. That fellow liked it so much that he ordered a second dinner and ate that too! Don't know how since the portions were very substantial. The person who ordered the ribs commented on how tender and flavorful they were. My scallops were wonderful; lots of flavor and the accompanying veggies were perfect! Their desserts are NOT the typical restaurant kind and were awesome. We were a pretty rowdy bunch and the staff were pleasant, helpful and professional. Overall, I'm so happy with this dining experience that I can't wait to go again!
Be the first to ReplyHistoric Tavern with good food.
Attended a wedding reception here, they did a nice job. It bleeds history, the British Spy, John Andre was help here. A must when in Tappan.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, slow service, too loud
Went to celebrate my birthday. Lets start with positive. Food was GREAT!!! But unfortunately the experience was not. Slow service, perhaps need more help. They had a band, great for a pub type place, but they were so loud we were unable to maintain a conversation. Even though we were far from band.
Good for lunch, but unless you are looking for live music, not the place to go.
Overpriced
Went here for Saturday night dinner because we had a gift certificate for my birthday. Started with wobbly table but fixed by waitress. Ordered short ribs with a $37 price tag. It was awful and โsawedโ thru it because I was hungry. Waitress never came back to ask if meal was to our satisfaction or I would have told her. My husband had lamb which he said was just ok $31. Had to ask for bread too. Donโt waste your moneyโฆ felt very ripped off by this meal!
