A well regarded restaurant in the popular and vibrant Leith district, it appears suitably plush and upmarket, but all the staff were pleasant and friendly and it wasn’t at all formal or stuffy. We were offered drinks whilst we perused the menu, which had three different options – a la carte, or two “surprise” tasting menus. Generally I’d be quite happy with a surprise tasting menu, but in this case it was difficult to choose between the two since they were both the same number of courses with the only discernible difference being that one used more premium ingredients. Considering there was a £50 price difference between each, we wanted a bit more detail than that, but fortunately this was not an issue and you could peruse the actual menu if you so wished, which was just as well really as we preferred the sound of the cheaper one! Everything we had was really very good, and it’s difficult to pick out any highlights. The beetroot consommé to start could perhaps have done with some actual pieces of beetroot in it, the flavour from the liquid didn’t seem very pronounced and some of the lamb fillet was a little chewy, but other than that it was all excellent. The scallops with a white wine, Vermouth and herb sauce were certainly very good, and a generous portion, and the barbequed John Dory was also very good indeed. A “Millionaire’s” caramel mouse to finish was a suitably decadent end to the meal, and the accompanying wine flight washed it all down very nicely. The wine flight included a glass of champagne to start, and the meal included a hot drink at the end (the menu listed tea or coffee, but they happily made me a chocolate!) although there was only one petit fours included which was a bit of a shame. Surely that should be a petit four? Overall though, very, very good and highly recommended.
