Great Sunday lunch
Lovely Sunday lunch; we had the lamb, beef and trio. All cooked very well. Amazing Yorkshire pudding! Nice veg and great deserts.
Be the first to ReplyGood country pub
We come here quite a bit and itโs a great country pub - nice fires and friendly staff. However the food is super-expensive and the portions are just too big - their solution lies therein, cut the portions and reduce prices and it will be less overwhelming. But itโs certainly a likeable pub and weโll be back.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing and Overpriced
All our 5 different meals very disappointing and overpriced. ยฃ26 fish pie, watery sauce, salty and tiny prawns. Vegetarian burger similar to cheap shop bought, soggy brioche bun. Overcooked pork, Burger and vegetarian tart also not enjoyed.

Food good ,bit pricey , lovely log burning fire but drafts from doorway not being closed properly . Service/staff was good.
Be the first to ReplyLovely traditional pub lunch
A lovely traditional pub with the log fires burning. Visited for lunch when seeing family locally, had to book on the phone but definitely worth the extra effort. We enjoyed the specials, a fantastic salmon risotto and sausage and mash. Delicious puddings too. The food and the service were both excellent, weโll be back.

We have used this pub over the years and generally the food pleases. I think the prices have become over the top. ยฃ25 for a less than perfect fish pie . Small with a few minuscule prawns. The steak and kidney pudding had scant meat inside. Chips good. Burger less than average . Vegetables plenty. This is pub grub not fine dining , I canโt understand the pricing . Not all staff are particularly friendly . Needs tweaking .
Be the first to ReplyChoose your sandwich carefully they are not cheap and you don't get the best quality ingredients
Nice pub, great real open fires, staff were pleasant. We ordered fish finger sandwiches on a choice of white or granary bread choosing granary - ยฃ10.95 each so for my wife and I almost ยฃ22.00 for two fish finger sandwiches. They arrived on wholemeal with no explanation or apology so that was the first disappointment. The salad garnish and few crisps on the side were ok. The fish fingers were budget and not a premium fish finger so 2nd disappointment - at that price you would expect the chef would use a quality product - but no.

A beautiful building with some exciting Thompson "mouseman" bar tops and tables and chairs which were so unusual to see! The log fires added to the overall positive ambience. The beers were varied and good. A great start. Sadly that was the end of the positives of our visit. The food which wins accolades elsewhere here, was poor and overpriced, the service was functional. Several of us had steak and kidney puddings with mushy peas. The pies were remarkable, - for their LACK of steak and kidney AND flavour! two small pieces of beef and one piece of kidney and a strangely flavourless suet patry casing with lots of flavour lacking gravy. The fish pies were equally disappointing, lacking in any quantity of fish and prawns, and the burger possibly the best buy of that day - rated as "alright". I was not convinced that the puddings were not bought in rather than made on the promises and came to the same conclusion about the panko crumbed king prawns I had as a starter - they at least had flavour if appearing to be made of chopped prawns and uniformly shaped. I could of course be wrong about that but it doesn't really matter, what does matter is that they were expensive and poor value for money.. I must say that I think there's nothing intrinsically wrong with buying in dishes but at these prices I expect better quality whether bought in or home made.
Be the first to ReplyVery Disappointing Experience
This was a very disappointing experience. The ambience of the Inn was great and the service acceptable. However, the food was way below the standard I expected from reading the reviews. My partner and I had the Fish Pie, a complete misnomer, with just a small quantity of mushy fish with an overload of herbs that dominated the flavour. For what it was, it was vastly overpriced as were the dishes our friends had. I would not fecommend it, nor will I be going back any time soon.
Be the first to ReplyBest lunch experience ever!
I was seriously impressed by this amazing pub/restaurant. Found by chance whilst passing through the area. Stopped off for lunch. The service, atmosphere, decor and food was hands down the best i've had in years. The Christmas decorations were unique and magical and perfect for a romantic, cosy lunch. I had a vegan quiche lunch option with a side salad and chips. Everything was so fresh, home made and full of flavour which is unusual as many restaurants/pubs don't put any effort into their vegan offerings. We are absolutely planning to come back soon and stay the night next time so that we can spend more time here. Highly recommended for a romantic meal or cosy get together with friends and family!

We were looking for somewhere for lunch and saw the sign for the Green Dragon and followed it. The pub is in a pretty location and we were welcomed by a roaring log fire. The food was very good. Giant sized Yorkshire puddings will remain in my memory for a long time to come. The pub is dog friendly which was a bonus. Service was good and the whole experience was memorable. I especially liked the selection of vegetables that came with the main course. It was well cooked and you were given a bit of everything. There is an interesting farm shop next to the pub which was worth a visit on its own. I shall be back!

I have lived locally to this establishment for 27 years. I return rarely to see if the front of house service has improved. Sadly, it continues to be consistently poor. It should be included in a hospitality curriculum as โhow not to treat to customers.โ The only member of staff with a pleasant manner was the lady with hearing issues who was delightful and did her best. The others behave like royal butlers or Saville Row tailors, you are privileged to enter. Iโll pop in again in 2024 and hope for a surprise.

Such a nice place. The food was delicious, deep in flavorous. I loved everything. I highly recommend to visit. Costumer service really professional.
Be the first to ReplyPopular country pub with high quality food
Tables in several areas of the pub. Most people eating and very popular on a midweek lunchtime, so definitely worth booking. There is a wide ranging menu, supplemented by blackboard specials. Of our four dishes, smoked trout was good, and the others (pigeon, pheasant, steak & kidney pudding) really excellent. Fresh seasonal vegetables served separately, a pity about the frozen chips (although they weren't bad to be honest). Service friendly, efficient and well-timed. Prices at the higher end for pub-restaurant, but we felt overall appropriate for the quality of the food.

I was in Cheltenham visiting family for Christmas and on boxing day we decided we'd go for a family walk and end up here for a festive drink. This will be the first and last time I'll be visiting this place. We walked in through one door and was a little confused as to where the bar was. I approached a mature looking staff member who was wearing glasses and asked politely where the bar was to be bluntly told the bar is the other way and that they were closing soon and it was said in an extremely uninviting tone. It was precisely 3:15 at this point when I asked what time they shut and she snapped 4pm. Considering we had just popped in for a swift drink I felt 45 minutes was more than enough time for a quick drink with the family and certainly shouldn't of been made to feel like we needed to leave. After this we proceeded to the bar and was greeted by another woman who made us feel that we were asking for the world when taking our order. She had the most miserable face on her and was just simply rude. It actually got to the point where 3 of us including myself decided not to bother ordering a drink as I couldn't stand the awful service. Before we came to this place we were told that this was the last place my Grandad had a meal before he sadly passed away. We were all looking forward to sitting outside and having a nice drink remembering him when unfortunately for us it turned out to be a drink discussing how terrible 2 of your staff members were. The only reason I didn't come back in and tell you was I did not want to cause a scene in front of my Grandma. So instead you're getting this review. I suggest you have a word with your staff and maybe some training given on how to greet paying customers. A simple smile and some manners would be an improvement.
Be the first to ReplyIf you are going just for a drink then don't bother
Visited with family for drinks and nibbles but despite being assured by a staff member that we could use a table in the top bar we were evicted from said table (in a very curt manner) a while later by two very stressed employees and ended up shivering outside. So, if you are looking go for a drink then don't bother with the Green Dragon by try one of the other tradition pubs in the area...and lets hope the GD popularity for food doesn't diminish and it appears that non diners are not welcome.
Be the first to ReplyLovely Christmas evening dinner
The Green Dragon has become one of our favourite pubs, it has everything you could wish for in a proper country pub, lovely ambience, great food, excellent staff and a very large wine list. We will be returning for many years because we love it. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyRevisited an old friend!
When I lived in Cheltenham and worked in Ciren the dragon was a pit stop on the way home. I revisited today just for refreshment and if any big chains want to see how to run a GOOD pub drop in. Excellent friendly service. The menu is really good and I will go back to try the chicken breast and pan seared pheasant (may contain shot) fully booked on a Tuesday lunchtime says a lot. Obviously not the cheapest but we'll worth a visit

The location and ambience of this 17th century Inn is lovely but my enthusiasm ends there as the food just doesnโt come up to expectations. Iโm amazed its had any good reviews, maybe weโve all gotten used to paying too much for poor quality. If you want to charge ยฃ17.50 for fish and chips, at least make fresh chips instead of frozen that had the texture of, and tasted like cardboard. Mushy peas ought to be marrowfat and not just a blended tin of garden peas, and personally, I like my fish skinned. The only good thing on the plate tbh was the tartare sauce. Chef might visit The Ivy in Cheltenham to see how itโs done superbly for less! I found the Sunday lunch similarly overpriced and underwhelming. Stingy portions and poor quality meat. Shame.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Sunday luncheindly
We have visited the Green Dragon several times but this visit we took friends for the first time, for Sunday lunch. You get a very friendly welcome and the relaxing ambience is lovely , this is a fantastic country pub and perfect in every way. The food is well presented, with a large choice from the menu and cooked to perfection. Our friends enjoyed their first visit and are looking forward to going back with us.
Be the first to ReplyThe end of an era
I have lived in this locality over 20 years, and this has been a favourite. However, never will we darken their doorsteps again. Probably the rudest barman I have ever come across, just a tip , look at the customer, try please and thank you, it might make you less disinterested. The food was diabolical, cheap stringy liver, and mash that was prepared earlier and would be good for holding in the window glass; who serves turnip with fish and chips? Just awful. My recommendation, go down the road to the Kilkenny, at least they are pleased to see you.
Be the first to ReplyA Bit Disappointing
It is sometime since we last visited and we were slightly disappointed with the food. I had fish pie which was heavy on leeks but light on fish and I could not find any prawns in my pie. At the price I expected more fish! My wifeโs lamb chops were average and a friendโs sea bass was a bit dry. The star main course was the steak and kidney pudding which could not be faulted. The desserts were excellent. My gooseberry, apple and treacle crumble was superb and everyone else enjoyed theirs. The ambiance and service were excellent. We will certainly visit again when next in the area and hopefully have a better experience with our main courses.

Excellent place to stay. Staff were all very friendly, and accommodating. We had 2 dogs with us and they were made very welcome. Great that we have a room with a patio area, so we could take dogs our without disturbing other guests. Meals were lovely with plenty of choice. Room was clean and roomy. Serviced daily. Milk available in hallway. Only thing was mattress. Felt as if we were going to fall out, as it dipped on sides, but cannot fault anything. A hidden gem!!!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing service.
This used to be our favourite weekend luncheon venue prior to Covid. Had to go to the bar several times to ask for service at our table. Were rather rudely told that they were short staffed. Other tables were also not too happy either. This is the third time weโve experienced this over the past six months.
