This was one of the best restaurants we found on our recent trip to London. Elegant and very comfortable, it offered a variety of authentic British game meats that one should never overlook while visiting. There are also innovative vegetarian offerings. I was overly full from lunch, so I had the superb vegetarian ravioli and a stunning cold tomato soup. My partner had duck and raved about it. The service was excellent and very helpful. Our wine steward (an extremely informed Italian woman) was more than helpful and sensitive to what we were look for, and even gave us a tour of the restaurant's 18th century wine cellar after dinner. We will definitely go back on our next London trip.
Be the first to ReplyUnpretentious and welcoming with fabulous food.
Venison Wellington was superb; really well cooked and a great cut of meat. Service was quirky but very friendly and unpretentious. Only slight criticism was the £7 for side order of buttered Leeks - was actually a buttered Leek at best😂🤣.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing from start to finish
We went for a Saturday lunch and chose to go for the a la carte menu, as we liked the idea of the venison wellington. This was our first visit to a restaurant like this in over 2 years, and we were really disappointed. Perhaps it is the rise in the cost of living but other than bread on arrival there were none of the usual surprises you generally get over the course of a meal and the service was poor from the greeting at the door through to the long wait for the bill. Not to mention a flat soufflé as they couldn’t access our table. The waitress even knocked over my husband’s glass of sparking water, but there was no offer to replace it. The food itself was nice, but none of the courses or individual elements were a wow! It’s a shame as we were looking for a new London lunchtime venue as our old favourite has closed, but this will not be it.

My partner and I booked The Game Bird for Sunday lunch and it’s one of the best I’ve had. We have tried a few places over the years, but my partner always wants to return to Simpsons in the Strand. Until now! The service and staff are outstanding, they simply cannot do enough for you. The food was divine. The beef, which is Rib of beef, was fantastic. Cooked to perfection, carved at the table and was exceptional. We’ll certainly be visiting again.

We had a lovely evening at the Game Bird last night, it was fairly busy, food was divine with a great service , we had some amazing chicken Kiev which i haven’t had in a long time and was gorgeous. Make sure you come to try the crispy cod and tomato consommé, Giacomo was our host and made the whole experience fantastic with some great wine from Valentina , I’ll be back for sure highly reccomended

We booked a table for 8.45pm. Due to the tube strike we arrived at 9.01pm...and were refused our table. Kitchen closed at 9pm apparently, and it was utterly impossible to do anything about it. The MD rather rude about it too, how dare we ask her to allow us to dine. Thankfully many good restaurants nearby so we didn't go hungry, but very disappointing approach all around from the Game Bird. Avoid.
Be the first to ReplyWould absolutely be the best hotel restaurant in Leeds
That the staff is so smarmy and obsequious certainly pleases. The preening fussy sipping clientele certainly seems pleased— most seem to be residents of the hotel, which suggests a certain lack of adventuresomeness. But what a dispiriting experience! You have to dine in the bar, which is not exactly conducive to a restful meal. The gin and tonic I started with seemed to have been phoned in from Mars, without the slightest flair or imagination. Then I ordered Chicken Kiev, partly out of childhood nostalgia ( This has not appeared on serious menus since, say, 1965), and partly out of solidarity with the Ukrainian regime. Hardly what it was supposed to be—-which is juicy and tender and hot all the way through. Despite the waiter’s indulging in some tired theater involving the offer of a bib, this was none of the above. The bill (202 pounds for two including a modest tip) was grotesque in comparison to the quality. If I were at a provincial hotel in Leeds or Hill I might consider a boring place like this , but why in the world choose it over a thousand better London restaurants?

Nearly an excellent dinner but a few small problems means I can only give 4 stars. First the female sommelier was outstanding. Knowledgable and passionate and as good as I have come across. The room is nicely set out but very loud. Service was attentive and polite but had to request a soup spoon and not all cutlery removed from first course. Food nearly excellent. Mixed smoked fish starters great fun. Tomato consommé and beetroot had good feed back. Main course of venison Wellington beautifully presented but slightly over cooked to my liking. Two Dover soles looked lovely but once again I think slightly over cooked. Chips and accompaniments were excellent. But charging £7 for three small bits of buttered leek although tasty is unfortunate. Crepe Suzette was not available which was a shame as we had all wanted this. Not sure how you run out of pancakes ! Lemon pudding for 2 was nice. Nearly £600 for 4 with three bottles of wine. Very expensive but despite the few faults and in particular because of the sommelier an enjoyable evening.

This is a very attractive dining room. The food is excellent and the service attentive, well-informed and cheerfully professional. We dined here before going to the theatre in the West End, so their all-day dinner is perfect. Will look forward to dining at The Game Bird again.

The Stafford is probably our favourite hotel in London & it was great to be able to return after recent difficulties.
The service throughout the hotel is always a notch above & this is one of the reasons we come back.
Food in the Game Bird excellent - top marks for beef tartare, crispy cod, hogget pudding & squab. Went retro with a shared crepe suzette done old school at the table at the end.
Always enjoy it & will return for the new menu in due course.
A lovely evening in the heart of St James
I had an amazing evening with my wife , I heard so much from people about the game bird so we decided to try it out and we were not disappointed at all , we had the corn soup which was a surprise considering that I am not a big fan of coriander and the beef tartare , as main I opted for the scallops tempura with chips ( a revisited version of fish and chips ) and my wife took the chicken Kiev as the person in charge recommended it, both dishes had a beautiful presentation and great in taste, we finished sharing a Bramley apple dessert which was a piece of art, super friendly service and professional from Jacamo and Davide, we will be back with the family.

Loved the food here and the staff were great. Nice relaxed atmosphere with beautiful decor. A great balance between formal and relaxed. Wouldn't hesitate to come back!
Be the first to ReplyExceptional
Lunch and we opted for the market menu which at £25 for two course or £30 for three is an exceptional value. I shall start with the desserts: innovative is the right description but also very tasty. Do try the Bradley Apple - simply awesome. The pork “pie” and the crispy place were exceptional. A very extensive wine list but very much on the very expensive side - we did however manage to find a good white Bordeaux at a reasonable price. The service was good with some teething problems.

We had a lovely time when we came for dinner in December and the service and food could not have been any better. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, the service was knowledgeable and friendly, food was outstanding. Will not be the last time and i am planing another visit soon

Really nice place for Breakfast, reasonably priced, service really good and the tea service and milk jugs are all solid silver. Would heartily recommend.

Leisurely Sunday lunch was delicious. Had a really lovely sweetcorn soup, followed by the roast which was glorious. Staff were attentive and helpful and very glad we ate there.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
The trouble is when a restaurant is overseen by a Michelin star chef your expectations are high. I'm not sure what Lisa Goodwin-Allen would make of the overcooked Dover Sole with tasteless overcooked shrimps and dry Chicken Kiev. The service was just about ok but the food.........
Be the first to ReplyFabulous Restaurant serving quality British fare
My wife brought me here for my birthday and it did not disappoint. We had originally cancelled our Saturday booking due to changing Christmas plans (and the threat of being locked in/out of where we needed to be), but so glad we came on the Friday night instead. This, like all restaurants, deserve our support at this difficult time for them.
The menu is not extensive, but I think this is a bonus as everything we saw come out of the kitchen or tried on it was fantastic (Quality over quantity wins every time!). The food was superb; my wife had the sweetcorn soup followed by the chicken kiev, which we were told was the most popular dish and we can see why. I had the beef tartare followed by the new lamb suet pudding and cutlet, both were excellent and I would happily have ordered again. Dessert was delightful, the sticky toffee souffle was one of the nicest desserts I have ever had (who knew sticky toffee didn't have to be stodgy!) and my wife loved the Bramley apple dessert. Special mention to the staff who were welcoming and friendly the whole meal, excitedly telling us about the menu and the items on it (it is so contagious when a member of staff is so excited about the food they serve, a real asset to the restaurant) and dealt with an incredibly difficult character and his wife at the next table with grace and politeness (When it was not necessarily easy to do so). Lovely of them to bring me out a little cake too for my birthday.
We will be back!
an amazing dinner with my family
I have been to the game bird for celebrating my father's birthday and it's been a fantastic dinner. we enjoyed all the food, which was absolutely delicious! they pay attention to all the details on the dishes and the taste was so yummy! Even all the staff made me, and particularly my family, home. I will definitely come back there!
