Wifeโs 35th Bday Dinner
I would like to think we all like to spoil our significant others for their Birthdays-I took my wife to dinner at The Dabney and we were amazed by the 8 course dinner and classic wine pairing. Every single employee was helpful from the moment we walked in the door. They were on top of their game and made this experience hard to beat in the โbest restaurant meal/experiencesโ we have had to date or will have in the future. The Manager on Duty was extremely helpful in discussing the food and wine, the kitchen staff were exceptional, numerous servers took care of us-my receipt says Nicolette was โoursโ. I canโt say enough for this place and how much I enjoyed their dedication to sourcing the best ingredients and trying to keep the farms and purveyors within a small radius of the restaurant. My favorite item on the dinner was the course of the โsugar toadsโ-iykyk. Thanks again Dabney Crew!!
Be the first to ReplySlow and pretentious - star payment but not star food
Slow and pretentious - some excellent dishes but others much less so. Over three hours - ie, a bit less than 3 courses an hour - yet, several courses needed little preparation at the time of serving. Best by far the main duck course - well conceived and executed. Wine "pairing" was frankly a wine tasting - 5 mildly interesting wines in ungenerous pours that added up to one single glass of wine (at $125?). Perhaps deserves a good rating but not a star for sure - although the price was for the star, not the food or ambience - and well below the standards of other one-star places.

Service was friendly but slow. Drinks took ages and the bar was not crowded. Martini was not great. Food took a while too. Food was good but small portions. Prices were too high for such small portions. Overall not awful but not exceptional.
Be the first to ReplyWorth the Money if you're used to spending it like this
The Dabney is one of a kind and we're happy we dined there. Having said that, I'm not sure any restaurant is worth $250 pp (before tip) but that could be because I'm just not used to spending that much. I love tasting menus and that is what The Dabney offers. The service was perfect. I had one of the best cocktails of my life - Called Man on a Wire. The food was wonderful except for one sausage course (but then I'm not a big sausage fan). The restaurant is a bit hidden so it was wierd for us to walk around a dark parking lot and down a little alley. Could be our Uber driver just didn't know where to let us out.
Be the first to ReplyPerfection in the District
One could start by highlighting the incredible flavors in the dishes - or the delicious cocktails crafted with local spirits, or the chic ambiance of the bricked space with the open kitchen - all world class - but the highlight is the exceptional service. Attentive, patient, practiced yet authentic- the DABNEY delivers. From the bartender creating an off the menu cocktail to meet tastes (which was incredible) or the presentation of oysters farmed by a former DABNEY alum, this is by far the best dining experience in DC. Cannot recommend strongly enough.
Be the first to ReplySuch a good dinner!
We were so excited to get a reservation at The Dabney. We were seated just a table from the counter where the chef worked and it was perfect. The night we went the focus was on a local pork farmer and seasonal crab. Each course was delicious. I could have done without the scrapple course but that is a personal preference. The staff was all kind and knowledgeable. We will defiantly return. The sommelier was so knowledgeable and listened to what we liked and picked wonderful choice for each of us. We will return!

The Dabney, this yearโs Washingtonian Magazine pick as the #1 DC restaurant is richly deserved. We had eaten there five times in the last few years as a couple and with friends and had always left elated. Not last night. We hadnโt eaten at The Dabney in over a year. Much has changed. The dining room has been remodeled and so has the menu. What used to be an ร la carte menu is now a six-course tasting menu priced at an attention-getting $185. I do not eat seafood. My wife does not eat red meat. She is not a demanding diner. As long as the ingredients and fresh and well-prepared, she is satisfied. And, to be sure, thatโs a low bar. But in my experience, the new price point demands something more. The Dabneyโs attempt to accommodate my pisciphobia fell far short. Four miniature cucumber spears in a benign, if enthusiastically hyped, tartar source does not rise to the level of fine dining. Each course was well prepared, apparently highlighting the current locavore trend, but sacrificing anything close to the โwowโ factor we had come to expect from The Dabney. When the tuxedoed manager asked us how the meal was going, I told the truth, expressing my disappointment in no uncertain terms. As a โgiftโ from him, I had a course of four beautiful lamb chops with an unusual sauce the composition of which eludes me.. I appreciated the gesture, and the combination WAS unusual, but less than stunning. Chef Langhorne has become THE rockstar chef of DC. Even early on a Wednesday night, the place was noisy and packed, so I am in a minority. But still, my wifeโs disappointment with the mere adequacy of most of her meal only redoubled my own at the embarrassingly feeble attempt to accommodate my dietary preferences. There are several area restaurants that I leave reliably elated by the experience. The Dabney used to be one of them. To a degree, Iโm the victim of my own heightened expectations, but, my God, how the mighty have fallen! In its current incarnation, The Dabney is clearly a โspecial occasionโ restaurant. And yes, this was an unforgettable meal, but for all the wrong reasons. For us, The Dabney has jumped the shark.

Just exquisite food! And the service was on par with some of the best in the world. Go to town on the menu if you can, as everything is wonderful some items can be eclectic but its all good.Go an enjoy!!
Be the first to ReplyCold and Unfeeling!
Unfortunately we were not able to experience dining at the Dabney due to the sudden passing of my father at Christmas. We cancelled the reservation within 48 hours notice as we needed to cancel our trip and head back home to be with my family. When we followed up with the Dabney regarding the credit card charge, we were told that the charge was non-refundable regardless of the traumatic circumstances. It is obviously very disappointing that the Dabney is so inflexible and lacks even the most basic level of empathy. Needless to say, while we visit DC several times a year, we will not be rebooking with an establishment that is this cold and unfeeling!
Be the first to ReplyFabulous meal, top notch service
We visited DC and were lucky to get a reservation at The Dabney. The staff is completely in sync with each other and nothing is overlooked. We were able to watch the meal being prepared from where we sat. From start to finish, everything was perfect. Well worth the price as it was a complete dining experience. Everything brought to the table was a work or art which the server explained in detail. Tip- add the white truffles! If you are lucky enough to get a reservation- don't miss it.
Be the first to ReplyFirst class dining experience
My first time at a Michelin star restaurant and it exceeded my expectations. It started with a table right next to the kitchen, where we could see all the chefs at work. My wife, who worked in restaurants for a long time, said it was rare to see a kitchen where everyone seemed like they got along and were having fun. The chef's table menu was terrific. Highlights for me were the sweet potato rolls, duck confit popsicle, and the fluke. The waiter told us great stories like how meticulously the chefs make sure the crabmeat has no shells in it. The wine pairings were very thoughtfully done (and really good). It's in a charming little alley in DC. What's not to love?
Be the first to ReplyGet the catfish slider! Youโll thank me later
The Dabney is right near the convention center in Shaw so I made sure to swing by for some bar bites and refreshments after a conference I went to. Tried the Alma Ata, the catfish sweet potato roll, and the country ham. The cocktail was just ok, not anything that I felt was memorable. The catfish sweet potato roll is a must. It is sooooo good, I could probably eat 10 of these. The country ham was also very delicious. The service was kind of lacking. I didnโt have a reservation but there were seats available at the bar. I sat there for a solid 10 min with zero acknowledgement and no offering of a drink menu. I know that people are busy but it takes only a second to say hi, how are you, Iโll be with you in a few minutes, etc - especially at a place like this. Hopefully it was an off night or something. I would love to return for their pre-fix meal (which is not offered at the bar). Also, check out the beautiful LOVE mural in the Blagden alley.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced and low quality
I am just glad that I didn't pay. My friends took me here because they lost a bet. It is a fine dining like restaurant with below average quality. The ambience is the only good think I guess. Do not order steak or any dish made with beef or you will be very disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyMichelin star by all means!!!
Nothing to remind you the USA bad service to almost every hotel or restaurant or public service in the Country. Really English style time accuracy, French wines and Swiss food and beverage service. Perfect in all aspects, very gourmet with American terms. Well done!

This restaurant was really incredible. Watching the chefs cook on the open wood fire was amazing. The food was spectacular. Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplySad at what's happening here
We use to love this place and the variety pre -Covid. I loved the variety of the a la carte menu, the staff, and the overall buzz of the place. I was excited when it reopened post-Covid and was willing to be patient with it. When it first opened up post-covid, there was a 4-course tasting for $75. I was okay with that, and given all the uncertainty etc post Covid I thought the price was reasonable. The food was very good and overall I was pleased with the variety. Now that same $75 4-course is $110. I get there's inflation, etc, but I just don see the value anymore. And I've heard that they're now planning on moving to a model where there's only a 6 course price fix for around $150-$160 a person. I was hoping that they'd eventually return to their roots and revert to the a la carte model, but now it's going in the opposite direction. I was willing to go there several times a year (and did!) pre-covid. It wasnt cheap but I felt the quality and the variety and high level of service were well worth it. I'm definitely not convinced anymore and would be very reluctant to return at this point, I'm sorry to say. Excellent memories of better times will persist, however.
Be the first to ReplyBest Ever Experience and Food
This is one of the very best dining experiences my wife and I have ever had, and we've been to some big-name celebrity chef establishments. The drinks are incredible, and perfectly balanced to whatever is on the menu. My starter Purdie Shuffle was made with a hint of house-made rhubarb cordial, just fantastic. My glass of montepulciano was equally good, and my wife singled out her pinch of salt cocktail as excellent. The menu is a four-course meal, with all the appetizers then a pick of one of three choices for the rest of the meal. First is an oyster with an incredible sweet cherry mignonette, a zucchini fritter, and a charred eggplant spread. My wife then had the scallop crudo, a fantasy of cucumber slices on top, while I had the locally made pork sausage, which was very well sauced. Next, my wife had the black bass, which she absolutely enjoyed, while I had the Rohan duck, among the best I've ever had. With that came a "bloody butcherer" corn bread with a sorghum butter that defied description-- served in a hot small fry pan, it kept changing in texture and flavor, a triumph. At the end we had the fat cat cheese plate, which had slightly under salted crackers, and it was hard to pick up the smoked olive oil, a tiny quibble. In all, this was as good or better as some meals we paid a lot more for. Plates are $110.00 a night, a bargain for the experience, plus drinks. Staff is smart, attentive, and willing to share knowledge. We'll be back.
Be the first to ReplyBest tuna Iโve ever tasted
A great venue.
You got 3 things as an amuse bouche - the tuna was divine.
You then chose from menu your starter main and dessert.
It was really terrifically presented and tasted great.
The staff were also very pleasant.
I liked the open kitchen so you could see the chefs cooking.
Not like it used to be
I thought I had raved about the Dabney previously but looks like I forgot to review in the past. Pre-COVID, I would have given 5 stars as I frequented often. Went back in January and although the service and cocktails were on point, the food fell disappointingly flat. Too many other options to replace with, particularly at that price point.
Be the first to ReplyFeels like I got ROBBED.
Went for the Valentine's Day special with my boyfriend. The first course was good, but then it went downhill from there. Service was nice as expected, but the food just tasted BAD. THEN THE NEXT DAY WE ENDED UP GETTING FOOD Poisoning.
(They might have been good pre-covid, but they clearly had gone downhill from our visit)
I tried to call them to explain my experience and see about a partial refund and they refused. Do yourself a favor and go to Cranes in Penn Quarter.
Food and overall experience is WAY better, and you won't feel bad for leaving your pet at home.
Impeccable!
We made a reservation for Valentineโs Day weekend. There was a special 6-course prefix menu so we could enjoy the atmosphere instead of staring at the menu. The wine pairing with each course was unique and fantastic. we were seated right in front of the hearth, the flames were blazing and the occasional breeze of hot air felt comforting for a night in February. The service was impeccable. I would definitely recommend The Dabney to anyone looking for high quality dining experience in a comfortable atmosphere.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful, inventive
I loved it. Delicious, inventive cocktail to start things off. The food was outstanding. To cook things so beautifully on coals/over flame speaks of real skill. This isnโt some gimmicky restaurant (though the theatre of the hearth is great!) but proper, proper cooking. Desserts were great. Service was just lovely. Canโt recommend The Dabney highly enough. Thank you.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing meal and experience
Thoroughly enjoyed the ambience, the friendly service, the inventive and delicious food, and the open kitchen concept. All three of us loved everything we were served, particularly the chestnut soup (snack), blue crab, the rock fish, the heritage chicken, and the bourbon brown butter ice cream. Our table was right next to the kitchen and it was so fun watching the food preparation over the wood fire.

Excellent food, service and wine list. Donโt forget to try their cornbreadโฆ itโs great. Would go again without a doubt.
THEIR MUSHROOMS ARE AMAZING
Cosy atmosphere, very good food
The Dabney projects a nice, homey atmosphere with its open kitchen and I was lucky enough to have a table close to it. The food is interesting and really flavorful. My only suggestion would be to slow down service between courses. My first snack course arrived before my wine and I felt like each course arrived too quickly after the previous one. Despite that, I'd return for the food and the fact that they gave a solo diner a good table - that's always appreciated!
