The Barking Crab Boston Reviews from The Last Year
Busy Water Side Lunch Spot
We stopped here right off the Water Taxi from the airport (which I highly recommend - $20 we followed the signs in the airport to ground transportation and then took the 66 bus to water transportation. $20 and there were 17 different stops we could go to, much faster and more convenient than Uber). Anyway, there are other reviews that capture our experience accurately. We were the first ones there, arriving at 11:50am. The hostess was not the most welcoming but I'll defend her a bit. We grabbed a table by the water (it's sit where you can find space), and within 4-5 minutes, the entire tented area was completely full. This is on a Tuesday at 12pm. My defense of her, ignoring the "that's her job, she should still be nice" crowd, is that this place must do it's own nation sized population of volume based on how quickly it filled on a nothing Tuesday. They must deal with a fair amount of difficult customers, many of them tourists like us, so to see the line filled at 11:55, probably doesn't bring the same smile to the hostess as it does to the owner. Anyway, the waterside table was great, and our server was very helpful and polite. The lobster roll was excellent, and they had some neat drinks options for a tourist high volume lunch place. Our waitress recommended the lobster roll and "anything with a shell." I read Kitchen Confidential, I know enough to heed warnings, but I was hungry and dead set on ordering a couple different things, so I still went the crab cake route, and regretted it til my next meal. They're just not worth your stomach space based on everything else on this menu that is probably awesome. They're not jumbo lump, they're stringy, filler, etc. The chowder was good though. It felt like a tourist requirement to go so we went, and if you order correctly it's probably a good spot, but I don't know that'd Id return on our next stop through. There were a lot of big groups, families, kids, etc., which isn't typically our go to.
A fun place to have some great food.
Had a fun time here eating a great fish sandwich for lunch. A little too pricey for me to enjoy the crab but allot of folks were. The staff were quick, the food was super hot, and not too hot under the tent. A Nice place to walk around and a great place to eat by the water.
Drinks on you!
Be forewarned: If you don’t mind drinks dumped on you and unapologetic bad service, this is the place for you! When light sun showers started, fellow customers made their way near our waterside table and politely asked if they could take photos over our table of the pretty, rainy scene. Without warning, a staff member (we believe the hostess) grabbed the end of our table and forcefully yanked it away from the light rain, as she simultaneously stated she needed to move it. There was no regard for the two of us sitting at the high top table, our drinks or our belongings. Her jarring movement splashed beer on one of us, drenching a sleeve and toppled our backpack (containing an expensive camera) to the ground. She hurried away as we tried to get her attention to alert her about what she had done. She was snippy, unapologetic and argumentative, saying “everything was getting wet!” (Everything included the plastic table covering and menus.) Beer on you is ok…light rainwater on the plastic tablecloth and menus is unacceptable. Verboten! There was no apology just an aggravated statement that she would comp the spilled beer (which we did not request). When our waiter claimed in a disinterested tone he did not know the hostess' name, we sought out the manager who would not talk to us. We left cash to cover the tab and walked out with a beer soaked sleeve. Fortunately, the camera was unharmed but the distaste for the place remains.
A nice meal on the harbor
We were staying in Boston for one Saturday night at the Intercontinental Hotel so we could see it from there and decided to give it a try. It’s right on the Harbor and as you may guess, we were not the only ones that wanted to go. They don’t take reservations and they closed the indoor dining room, so your only option was to eat under a very large tent. We got in line, and it moved at a decent clip, and we got to sit after around 30 minutes. My daughter isn’t into seafood at all, but I still made her try the New England clam chowder and she loved it and now she’s hooked! I had the lobster roll, and it was delicious, and they have a nice drink menu as well. The service wasn’t great as simple requests for water were ignored and it’s funny that when you ask for items sometimes it never arrives, but they are always quick to give you the bill and race back when they see the credit card so they can get you moving and get the table ready for the next group. One last funny item … the next day we took a Lyft to the airport and during conversation we told the driver we went to this place. He laughed and mentioned that that place wasn’t always a tourist attraction and was really more of a local place, and they have been shut down in the past for health code violations so that wasn’t much of an endorsement. We didn’t have any issues ourselves and I was curious and looked it up and could only find stuff from 2008, so let’s hope it stays that way.
Great casual place on the water
We came here as a family of 4 for dinner this past Saturday night as it was recommended to us by friends. It was so good! Little bit of wait but understandable as it was Saturday night. We had a variety of food orders from salmon to steak to lobster roll to fish and chips and it was all great. The restaurant is very eclectic, loud and fun. No frills, just good food and a good time.
Definitely stop here but it's busy so maybe try going off peak times.
On a very rainy day I retreated here for a late lunch. Every day I passed by it was always busy so when I went it was in between the busy lunch and dinner service and although still there was a steady stream of people, ( a lot of Red socks & Yankee fans before they were heading off to Fenway for that night's ball game), I got a seat at the bar fairly quickly. I had the Snow crab claws and came with corn on the cob which were lovely and I thoroughly enjoyed. I had intended to go back for Lobster roll during my Boston trip but I ran out of time, I do hope I get to go back. The place itself is lively, lots of fun and the best 80's/90's music. I would love to go back with a group of people as everyone around me were enjoying their food and having food.
Surprisingly great food.
I’m not a huge fish fan, but the wife wanted to come to this restaurant so we got in the queue and were seated after a short while. Decided to chance it and order a fish dish, which was amazing! Honestly thought that this place would be just ‘ok’ with the volume of people going in and out and the amount of food prepared, but it was surprisingly good. Will definitely come back if we return to Boston.
Love this place, been going there for years!!!!! definitely
Love this place, been going there for years!!!!! definitely the spot you wanna go when you have visitors The spot is great in The summer Excellent food and drinks!!!! Totally recommend it!!!!!!
Went here St.
Patrick's day weekend and it was the best meal of the weekend. We had naked and traditional lobster rolls and they were amazing. Service was fantastic too
I was expecting a bit more given the price.
Food was good but I enjoyed the lobster roll from Quincy market more for a better deal. Seems to be quite the popular spot though, it was fully packed past peak lunch hours!
A cool little dive by the water
We picked The Barking Crab because of its location on the water for our Friday evening dinner. My daughter & I enjoyed the crab dip. The clam chowder was quite tasty. We split the Clambake & it was perfect for the two of us. Definitely a good bar scene for after work & those visiting. Would love to enjoy their deck during a summer evening!
R and I were a bit underwhelmed.
We had lobster bisque, the Fisherman's Platter (assorted fried seafood), and Bloody Mary's for Sunday lunch. Would've preferred more non-fried options. Service was really good, which was somewhat of a surprise given some of the in-your-face rules / signs posted outside. Staff were attentive and very nice. The setting, menu, pricing, is a bit of a contradiction. One might expect average food at a crowded kitschy restaurant, but wouldn't expect to pay fine dining prices for it. You can get same quality for less elsewhere, or pay the same for higher quality just down the street.
I have been a couple times over the past year when in
I have been a couple times over the past year when in Boston. Attempted to visit twice in a 3 day period and arrived 10 or more minutes before posted closing time only to be told they had already stopped seating. Both times I combined my attempt with about a 20 minute walk from the convention center area.....in February! Needless to say there will not be another attempt!
EVERYTIME in Boston! Amazing crab and shellfish.
Onion rings meh but 80 % of menu is great. Water taxi stop is right next to it so it's cool to take the water taxi from the airport and head straight for a delicious meal right away!
Food is amazing.
My servers are GREAT. Super friendly ans outgoing. Thank you. Ambiance quiet ny the water just right
Great local place with delicious seafood
I went to the Seaport to meet a friend who was in town for a conference. We were exploring the Seaport, and came upon The Barking Crab. I had read many great reviews, but wasn't sure how much indoor seating they provided. We were pleased to find a seat right away (It wasn't that busy), and our waiter came right over. We both had clam chowder and fried clams. The food was delivered right away, and was delicious! It was a perfect place to stop on a mild winter day at the Seaport.
Barking Crab is an Institution in the Seaport.
Been here longer than I can remember. It's pretty much New England seaport fare. A bit pricy but given its location it's expected. Service can be inconsistent depending on how busy this place gets and it can get busy. This last time I went I was a bit disappointed in the steamers appetizer. They gave us about 10 steamers for a $36 price tag. Steamers should be a bucket full especially for that price. All in all a decent New England dinner. A staple. A must go at least once kind of place.
Came for the food stayed for the hospitality! Read reviews
Came for the food stayed for the hospitality! Read reviews before coming and decided on the chowder, bisque, and crab cakes. All were spot on but the bisque had enough lobster in it that it was plenty on its own.... Unpopular opinion but preferred it to chowder. Kelly and Alejandro took care of us- on a busy Wednesday night- Kelly was patient and respectful of our group of 6 even though short staffed and we were indecisive at best. Alejandro assured our service was fast and plates cleared. Inside was clean and well decorated for being located right on the water for a colder rainy night!
Nice
We waited for about 20 min outside. Not a long wait for this restaurant. The hot crab dip was very very good. The seared sampler (scallops, lobster and shrimp with asparagus and mashed potatoes) was nice, tho slightly overcooked. Reasonably priced ($50) for the size. A bit noisy, but it’s a joint, so to be expected. Would go back with good weather to sit outside. Good service. Worth the visit if you are in the bright.
Amazing experience!
Easy to get to, the food was amazing, and the staff was charming! Will go back for sure the next time I'm in Boston!!
Not worth your time
Arrived at 7:57. We were sat and ask what we wanted to drink. Looking over menu we were told by our server the kitchen was closing in 10 minutes. We ordered and at 8:28 we were told it was last call for food and alcohol. We were then given our check. Seafood was subpar. Service was nice but experience was rushed.
The service is great, but the food is terrible.
Despite the cool location, we will never come here again.
Choose Another Place!
This place was recommended as a local favorite, but really turned out to be more of a tourist trap! Nice view, but that was about it! We went for lunch, and it was the most pathetic 'lobster roll' that I've ever had! Subpar quality and very little lobster (maybe 2 oz) plopped down on top of a stale kaiser roll (the roll wasn't even opened up). 2 cups of clam chowder, 2 'lobster rolls', a cheeseburger, 2 orders of fries, 1 beer, and 1 coke... $165 (not counting tip)! Absolutely criminal! You'll be much better off going across the bridge to Hooks!
Very Disappointing… Food Prices UP, Quality/Quantity DOWN
This used to be our "go-to" location for fresh Lobster Rolls and Fried Clams with Bellies while in Boston however… no more. We stopped in for a late lunch/early dinner on a Saturday around 3:30 pm and got one of the last tables available. Service was prompt and food delivery quick despite the crowd, however wait service was almost non-existent after that. Ordered a Lobster Roll Platter (Market Price = $37) which included French Fries. Although it looked like it was loaded with lobster, turns out the portion was mostly sitting on top of the sliced roll… not IN it. Lobster quality also was lacking the claw and tail meat of the past and was heavily supplemented with small shredded pieces. Also ordered the Fried Clams Appetizer (Market Price = $23). What used to be a large portion of fresh clams with large bellies now consisted of a small bowl of mostly heavily breaded clam strips. The restaurant is still packed (with a typical line waiting outside when we left) however after the disappointing quality, quantity, and price increases experienced during this visit, we won't be back. Two days later we had the same meal at the Boston Sail Loft which was less expensive, along with much better quality and quantity of food. The Barking Crab needs to up its game and not rely solely on its past reputation. Price increases are expected however the competition now has it beat for better food.
Ripoff
What a ripoff. Paid $37 for a lobster roll. Very little lobster on a stale bun. French fries and pickle were good though. We definitely won’t be back. Go elsewhere.
Great seafood and fun vibe
Great fish and chips and lobster roll. Loved the interior decor. Portion sizes were perfect and prices were very reasonable

Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
