My partner and I dined with Tapas Molecular Bar in 2018 and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. We dined with them for our 5 year anniversary and to celebrate our engagement that day. In 2020 my partner and I planned to revisit Japan and dine here again, for my partners 30th and their dads 50th birthdays, however due to covid restrictions we had to rearrange 3 times. Finally, when Japan reopened we contacted Tapas Molecular bar in October 2022 to reserve a date in April 2023. We were told, that it was too early to reserve and that as we were not staying at the hotel, the earliest we could reserve would be 2 months prior. So, we set up an automated email to email at the exact time and on the exact date they recommended, exactly two months before the date and we were told that the restaurant was fully booked for the date we requested. The policy of keeping seats for those staying at the hotel first is a redundant one. The restaurant only seats 8 guests I believe? And there are no doubt many more guests staying in the hotel at any one time than 8, so reserving the restaurant reservations for hotel guests till 2 months in advance is a bit of a nothing. Also, given Japans service standards and the standards of a 5 star hotel, given our previous contact about dining on this particular date, I would have expected the hotel / reservations team to have contacted me in advance as soon as the restaurant was fully booked to give me as much notice as possible to make other plans, however, we only learnt that the restaurant was fully booked when we enquired a second time, when we’d been asked to, which now leaves us very little time to make alternative arrangements. I will now never dine with yourselves again, and I will never stay in a mandarin oriental hotel. Myself and my family are extremely disappointed and angry by this whole experience and I believe should have been handled much better.
