The popular, African fruit Tamarind holds a rugged exterior, with a sweet, tangy delectable contained within. The most succinct way to describe this Tribecan restaurant is that it is, quite frankly, the exact opposite of what the restaurant name implies. Despite Tamarind's grandiose exterior--its personal chandeliers, elongated central bar, and individualized enclosures-- the food that it serves are mediocre at best.The facade that Tamarind maintains begins at its entrance. The white-themed, minimalist design is inviting for any upscaled gathering. As a frequent passerby, I always wondered how great a restaurant this magnificent establishment was. Upon entering, however, we were met with a hurried staff throughout our experience, as they preemptively took away our unfinished plates (although bear in mind, we held zero intention for finishing anyway) and rushed for the check upon our completion. To put it bluntly, we were treated like items on the same conveyor belt the food probably came out of.To describe the food, Tamarind can be seen as the jack of all trades. It is hard to discern what Tamarind succeeded in besides general ambiance, with an overly extensive menu and none of what we tried impressionable. The cauliflower was uncooked, and the three measly, bite-sized samosas were indeed not worth $16. Their flavorless, "off the menu" buttered chicken, which was recommended to us, is off the menu for a reason. We were undoubtedly grasping for straws when looking for an upside for their food, but unfortunately, we came out empty-handed.All in all, Tamarind is a great establishment to sit and mesmerize at what is around you. With its high volume of guests, it seems as though this is enough for many people within Tribeca. However, if you are looking for something more impressionable for the palette, we recommend eating elsewhere.
