Sweet Basil Vail Reviews
Best restaurant in Vail!
Wow! What a lunch. Started with a 1/2 btl of Guy Lamardier Grand Cru Bubbles with Truffle Fries, Crispy Shrimp & Calamari and Corn Cappelletti then moved on to a 1/2 bottle of Chateau Cantermerle with Ricotta Gnocchi and Lombardi Brothers Loin Burger. Great wine program; particularly like the great 1/2 btl selections. Everything was amazing. Staff professional and Friendly. Beautiful space. Will be back!

I had high hopes for Sweet Basil, but unfortunately, the meal didn't live up to expectations. We started with the Feta Appetizer, which was decent and had a good balance of sweetness and savory cheese, but nothing spectacular. Then we moved on to the Shrimp Appetizer, and that's where things went downhill. The shrimp was ridiculously over-seasoned -- so salty that it actually burned our tongue. It was almost inedible, and I found myself unable to enjoy it at all. Next, we tried the bread rolls and the Ricotta Gnocchi. While the gnocchi itself was well balanced with the mozzarella and artichokes, there wasn't enough flavor to redeem the rest of the meal. The bread was just okay, and honestly, I was hoping for something more exciting given the restaurant's reputation. If you're looking for a great meal in this area, I'd honestly recommend heading downstairs to Mountain Standard. The food there was a big more satisfying. Nice patio ambiance and the server was kind, but not the best.
Came in with very high hopes.
Everything missed the mark. Service was just rude. Not friendly at all. Salmon made me sick I had to send it back. Fishiest i've ever had. Only good thing was the tenderloin. Really disappointed. Michelin recommended? No idea how.
Our waiter was so knowledgeable and helpful with the menu!
Our waiter was so knowledgeable and helpful with the menu! He was helpful with dietary restrictions and recommendations. I had the halibut which was light and delicious!

We came in for a late lunch and were really impressed by the food and the view. We had the heirloom tomato salad and I had the Argentine shrimp while my husband had the salmon. Each dish was so flavorful and well cooked. The shrimps were tender but still have a slight crisp and I loved how well cooked and flavorful the veggies in the dish were as well. Would come back again to try out other dishes if we have the chance

Wow! Amazing meal carefully prepared with the intention of awesomeness! Service was fantastic too! We sat on the balcony overlooking the village, very much recommended.

Good Service & Cheeseburger
Arrived on a Sunday around 2 pm and was able to get a table top immediately. Waiter was knowledgable and friendly and helped us pick out some fruity cocktails that we were not familiar with. They were both good. We just split a cheeseburger and fry and ordered medium. It was proly more like medium rare. Many places will not serve a burger cooked this medium rare. It's certainly because of the risk but I surmise this place its confident in its food handling capabilities to so. Really tasty and not all slathered in some special sauce to cover up for the burnt puck places serve. The place is pricey , its bloody Vail.

I enjoyed the Lawman cocktail, the gnocchi, and the lemon & fennel dessert on the outdoor patio. The vibe and the food were perfect!
We did 9 o'clock reservation.
We got there early tried to get a drink at the bar. The bar staff was busy because everybody was eating at the bar. We couldn't get a drink. So we just patiently waited.. took us back to our table, which is very nice with the back of the restaurant. We ordered the beef tenderloin. And the Dungeness pasta dish. The tenderloin was OK. The Dungeness tasted like seawater we sent it back. The mac & cheese might've been the best I've ever had. The dessert chocolate pinecone was good as well. I was a bit disappointed, but maybe I'm just spoiled because I live in Dallas in Whole Foods very good. 200 coconuts
NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE
I spent my summer at Vail. Beautiful, great activities and great weather. I went with 5 friends to Sweet Basil. The service was very slow, but the food was just not at its prime,

Had a great dining experience overall! The ambience was warm and inviting, with just the right vibe for a relaxed evening. Jason, our server, was fantastic--friendly, knowledgeable, and his recommendations were spot-on. We tried the whipped feta, octopus, veal, and crab bucatini--each dish was delicious, especially the whipped feta which was a perfect start to the meal. Only downside was the host, who wasn't very welcoming and set a bit of a cold tone at the beginning. Thankfully, the amazing service and food more than made up for it.
Would not return
My friend and I were looking forward to this dinner but it was definitely disappointing. We had nice service, but our appetizer consisted of heirloom tomatoes, and the yellow tomatoes were not ripe- they were white. Then our dinner came and we found a sharp piece of plastic in the complimentary sweet bread ? they bring to the table. We notified our waitstaff and she quickly brought a manager. She apologized and removed one of our entrees from the bill. A couple of minutes later, she returned and said she spoke with the chef and they would comp the whole meal. That was the way it should have been handled, and while I appreciate it, we would not return.
Mountain Standard is much better
We’ve regularly enjoyed their sister restaurant Mountain Standard and looked forward to finally trying Sweet Basil. The location and ambiance on the back patio above the river is amazing. Staff was friendly. The current version of Duroc Pork Chop with latke was a disappointment. It was not what I expected from the menu description. The latke was more a soggy bland hush puppy. The potatoes were mashed not shredded, and if there was sour cream it was mixed in making the latke very mushy. No chives to be seen. The entree had a German flair with a few apple slices, onion, and mustard seeds. I didn’t pick up on that from the menu description. The ‘salt and vinegar apple chips’ were neither salty nor vinegary-just basic pieces of dehydrated unflavored apple slices you might buy in the snack aisle from the grocer. The venison with Gochujang sauce was also lackluster; the meat was not tender and was difficult to cut; it did not help that their steak knives were very dull. The sauce was no more special than a basic bottled Gochujang from the grocer.
Sweet Vail Lunch
Classy lunch stop on a day trip to Vail. It was busy and we didn’t have reservations but were able to get seats at the bar. We enjoyed a delicious whipped goat cheese appetizer that was baked in a puff pastry and drizzled with ginger honey lime sauce. Perfect with a glass of wine. We also shared the crispy shrimp & calamari. Light meal. Nice place.
Sweet Basil - not so sweet
Sweet Basil was an honored tradition for over 15 years. We recently visited to celebrate multiple birthdays Sadly, this visit is our last. This was the worst dining experience - I never write reviews but feel compelled to do this time Service terrible (waited over an hour for drinks); food not edible ( spouse not able to eat $100 lamb entree and daughter passed on pasta entree after a bite). Server was tone deaf - when issue was addressed, server literally walked away to another table - no apology or attempt to resolve discrepancies - I have had better service at Dennys We looked forward to dining at Sweet Basil for over a decade - we will not return Far better choices in Vail where they respect customers
Great service but luke warm food
service was great, whipped feta was amazing but entrees were served lukewarm warm at best. We sent back pork chop and was still returned sort of warm. Food temperature is very important!
Terrible and Rude Manager
We had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. Our server was great—she explained everything well and provided good service. However, the attention from the hostesses was the worst. We arrived early, and even though the restaurant was empty, they refused to seat us until exactly 5:15 PM, the time of our reservation. Later, when the place got crowded, they suddenly wanted us to leave quickly. If they had seated us when we arrived, this wouldn’t have been an issue. The worst part was at the end. The manager (or whoever was in charge) handled our bill so terribly and spoke to us in such a rude and condescending manner that it ruined our entire experience. Unfortunately, the way she behaved was so unfriendly, abrupt, and unpleasant that it left a terrible final impression. We absolutely do not recommend this place.
Sweet Dinner in Vail
We had dinner at Sweet Basil at it came with high recommendations from a friend. We made reservations within a week and had an 8:45 pm reservation. We were seated quickly, but the service was a bit slow (seemed understaffed.) The food choices were good. Highly recommend the spicy ahi tuna and the red snapper.
Not a good dining experience
Was very disappointed with our meals. Service was poor and not well attended by our servers. Our meal was cold and not tasty at all. They brought me a second serving and it was still not good at all. We were 2 couples and all disappointed with what we ordered.. Food was pricey for what we felt was a poor meal.

Perfect lunch! Arrived w/o a reservation and was seated at a lovely table overlooking the river. Had the whipped feta which tasted as good as it looked. I had the peach, tomato, burrata salad and the flavors were so fresh and delicious. My husband had the Reuben which was tasty and plentiful. Dessert was a Nutella cannoli w gelato! Everything was delicious and we had the most personable waiter! Excellent experience on all fronts.

Enjoyed a fabulous dinner at Sweet Basil where everything was just amazing! Booked ahead of time and we got a great table on the back patio overlooking the river! Our server Craig was phenomenal and made the experience alll the better particularly the way he staged all the courses which I loved . They had fabulous cocktails and Mocktails for the kids with some unique flavor combinations. Began with some delicious fresh bread roles and then the oysters which were delicious, fresh and served with a unique pineapple mignonette! We also has the yellow fin crudo which was also a hit! Then we had their whipped feta which is the perhaps their signature dish served with a pastry topping which you crazy to make it the crackers to scoop up the feta. Next we had the tune poke and shared some crab Cannelloni - both also really fantastic! We left way too full but happy from an all around great experience!

Best food I've had in my life! Everything we ate was a 10/10. Would recommend the whipped feta and yellowtail for appetizers. Spicy tuna and steak tartar. For entree we recommend the chicken, tomato and mozzarella salad and the venison loin!
Not worth it at all
We wanted to enjoy a Michelin rated restaurant in the US Food was not tasty We do not recommend the Steak Tartar Do not recommend the oysters Do not recommend the Tuna Poke untasty Expensive for poor food Poor service Great location Nothing of a Michelin star
Lunch on the 4th
Stopped in for lunch on the 4th of July! The service was wonderful and the food was delicious and full of flavor. Stephen, our waiter, was so friendly and helpful on the menu items. The view of the creek is perfect on a beautiful summer day! We had the Yellowtail Crudo, Octopus Tacos and Lamb Rigatoni. All three were delicious and highly recommended!
Great place!!!
Just an excellent restaurant… We got a seat by the window overlooking Gore Creek… My Duroc Pork Chop was amazing!!! My wife had the venison and it was sooo good!!! The toffee desert is also something special… The Sommellier really knows his wines!!! We can’t wait to go back!!!
Whole staff was rude to us Idk why.
We were just there on a Friday night for a couples date. Hostess food runner and waitress were extremely short with us- it was a terrible vibe and experience Food wise, they were out of the snapper we wanted ,, gnocchi was just a block of cheese very bizarre and ahi tuna was served warm on the side like tomato paste. Would never recommend it - costs us half a thousand dollar for four people
Absolutely amazing food and service.
We made a reservation and were sat on the patio with a view of the water.
Food and service were ok.
Ambiance was dated. They need better bartenders. Not impressed.
Very expensive, tiny portions
Very expensive, tiny portions and not worth it. The portions are getting smaller and smaller each year. The size of an entree is the size of an appetizer. They even charge for the bread- 4 bites of bread costs 8$. Cocktails are mediocre and full of ice. The food is good for the most part, but way too expensive for our family's budget. Will not be coming back.
What a fantastic restaurant! Sweet Basil is the premier
What a fantastic restaurant! Sweet Basil is the premier restaurant on the main walking street in Vail for a reason. From the lovely welcome from the hostess at the door (Kaley) who answered all of our questions and made a wonderful suggestion to have a margarita she recommended at the bar first, to the bartender (Tiffany), to the excellent dinner and servers, this is a place we keep returning to every year.
Difficult to get a reservation, but the food is pretty nice.
Service is good. Overall, I think this place is a little overrated and the cost of dining is off the charts.
We had the best experience here for dinner.
Sat right at the windows overlooking the beautiful creek, our server was super attentive, and the food was INCREDIBLE. We enjoyed the oysters, caviar, and venison tartare to share - all perfect for 2 people. We had the venison meal - perfectly cooked! & the scallop meal - incredible flavors. For dessert we did the sticky toffee pudding - so light and fluffy with a great sauce. We ranted and raved the whole way home. Best meal we've had in a long time! Huge compliments to the chef! Only got a couple pictures... too busy enjoying.
Very slow service and nothing special about the atmosphere.
Food looks pretty but I didn't enjoy it. If overpriced, fancy food with small portions is your style then definitely try it. I wouldn't recommend coming here.
Unwelcoming and disrespectful unfriendly employees
I was with my wife, ordered a house cab. The bartender with the most dull (dud) personality poured what looked like, well let me tell you if I put a dime at the bottom of the wine glass it would not have covered it. He walked away,And then he asked me if it was ok. I had him pour me one. I was in disbelief. We were there in June, same thing, didn’t realize it until my wife said something to me. The guy is always there, he’s a real winner. I can’t see it being Michelin Rated, I have been in hundreds of high end restaurants that have better bartenders and servers.
I thought this place was pretty good.
The food was quite delicious- I tried a host of appetizers plus the scallops and the wagyu, all of which were tasty. 4.5 stars.
Good food in Vail
Great spot for dinner. The food is typically well prepared and enticing to look at. The wine list is well-appointed with a range of varieties and prices. This is one of our places to bring friends when they visit Vail. as it has a good location and reliable food.

Date: Saturday, March 2nd 6:15pm Reservation: A must We ordered the octopus ragu, carbonara and a bottle of wine to start. For our entrees, I got the Cod and he got the Scallop dish. And for dessert, although we were full there was absolutely no way we were going to pass on dessert! We got the no brainer STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING CAKE, however, there was a dessert called the "SNOWMAN!!!!!!!" and yes I had to ask if it was in the shape of a snowman and when our waiter, Esteban said Yes!, I said, we would like one of those as well please. I checked every review platform and could not find a photo of the snowman dessert so I have attached one to delight you, but oh my oh my, imagine if they made the snowman dessert like a baked Alaska style kinda like a flambé!!! Ughhhh it would've been a show too! So. To sum up, Sweet Basil is a Michelin Star restaurant. Location is nice and easy, hotel had their own car service for travel within Vail. Hostess was fine, but expected friendlier being the first point of contact. Woman at coat check was absolutely lovely, wish I got her name. Restaurant ambience, layout, color, where the wine collection was when you walk in, was nice and cozy, I even like the feeling of the ceiling being a bit lower. There was one issue during dinner with the lighting, not sure if the dimmer was glitching or there may have been a power flicker or outage, not sure but there were quite a few people who had to use their lights on their phones to look at their menus, and Ofcourse they kept it on which took away from our evening. Wait, Esteban, made amazing recommendations, wonderful smile, great attitude, timely check-ins, the wait staff and was great with the timing/sequence of the food as well. Dessert, Sticky Toffee was yummy it wasn't too sticky and it was moist definitely would get again I wouldn't say that I haven't it's the best I've ever had, but it was yummy. The snowman was yummy as well, totally wish they would think about doing it flambé or baked Alaska style, however it does come with a raspberry sorbet and OMG, the combination of that tart, refreshing sorbet and the chocolate ganache like cream snowman was just perfect. So overall, WORTH IT. DEFINITELY WOULD DO AGAIN.
Bicam koving to oklahoma .
Seet basil is what i will miss the most it not easy to find.?parking and seating areblinited but its worth the extra effort
We had one of the best restaurant experiences of our lives
We had one of the best restaurant experiences of our lives at Sweet Basil. The Perfect Margarita packed a serious punch that lasted through the meal. My wife enjoyed the Blood and Smoke. The whipped feta cheese appetizer was amazing. The sashimi was not up to the standards of the other food we ordered. My wife had the pork entrees, and I had the salmon. Both were top notch. For dessert, we enjoyed a blood orange concoction that was scrumptious. Our waiter and the overall service were outstanding. We never felt rushed, but never had to wait more than a few minutes for the next course. We each had a glass of wine recommended by our waiter, and the pairings were excellent.
We had it a while ago but when we did there was not
We had it a while ago but when we did there was not anything bad to say all. the apps and deserts were ordered multiple times. The service was great the waiter we had was great and also nothing bad to be said. The place was beautiful and on a great spot on a river running through the town. Over all I'm happy.
Sublime
The best food we’ve eaten in Vail for a long time. The sashimi and rabbit starters were delicious as was the such and wagu beef entrees. The. Chocolate mushroom a real highlight! Highly recommend.
I've been to Sweet Basil several times in the past and I've
I've been to Sweet Basil several times in the past and I've always been a huge fan but there were some pretty big misses this time around. The caviar bump literally had zero caviar, it was a creme fraiche and chive cracker for 25 dollars each. The scallops were over sauced and too rich. The "wagyu" beef seemed more like sirloin. The carbonara ravioli and the potato bombs were just not great. The yellowtail sashimi was the best bite of the night. We were also disappointed with our waiter who was short with us and would not give any feedback on our menu questions except for "yeah, it's great."
We recently dined at Sweet Basil and I thoroughly enjoyed
We recently dined at Sweet Basil and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal there. Although the waiting area can be a bit cramped when it's busy, the dining area in the back of the restaurant with views of the river is lovely. We had the Ahi Crudo and potato bombs to start, both of which I thought were delicious. The sauce on the potato bombs was particularly intriguing. I had the venison for dinner and shared some of the duck entree with another member of my party, and although I thought my venison was really good, I think the duck was better. For dessert, they had a special that was a snowman with chocolate ganache and raspberry coulis constructed as a snowman, which was both incredible to look at and delicious to eat. Overall, I very much enjoyed my meal at Sweet Basil and would recommend for anyone looking for a more classy place to eat in Vail.
I've been coming to SB for a long time and my previous
I've been coming to SB for a long time and my previous experiences have always been the best.. yesterday though, I had to send back my first cocktail, it was not made correctly and flavors were missing (keep in mind this place was recently given a Michelin mention) yellowfin tuna was very good, potato bombs were ok and the burger was not the burger I am used to get there. Now I think this place is not consistent.. hit or miss in other words.
Delicious food with a creative twist.
The pork chop was very well cooked, as was the duck. The chocolate mousse mushroom is fun and tasty. Service was rather slow, but overall polite and efficient. It was a loud restaurant, but not overly so.
Was looking forward to this restaurant.
I had dinner at their sister restaurant mountain stand of the night before. And was disappointed so this was a chance to hopefully make up. Another reviewer mentioned how disgusting the ravioli was. I could not agree we sent it back on the waiter took it off the menu. We got the mushroom salad which he said was all mushrooms. But it was just raw mushrooms sliced up on some frize lettuce and not very flavorful or interesting. He suggested the Spanish octopus to make up for the horrible ravioli. So we got that and it was good but I have to send things back at a restaurant of this caliber is very frustrating. We also had a reservation from more than a couple weeks and we receipted practically in a table that was in the bar. Not really in the restaurant and the table that you offered us in the restaurant was stuck back in the corner between lots of other people and did not look very appealing so we opted for the bar table. But never felt like we were really in the restaurant. We did have the pork chop which was quite delicious that was the only excellent dish we had. Andy was our waiter and he was very nice and accommodating. And the hostess could not have been nicer but she didn't have a better table to give us! Cuz there was none. Desert with sticky toffee pudding. It was nice. One entree two appetizers and a couple glasses of wine and a dessert. Remember one entree. And it's still cost us $110 each! I would not recommend this place either.
Once upon a classic meal....
Everything was spot on, the food, service, atmosphere.... The waiter was experienced and knowledgeable, food came to us at the perfect temperature and the wine pairings were exquisite. In all a wonderful night.
Very good place
Excellent service, variety of menu choices, very good quality of food and drinks. A bit expensive, though.
