Great food but poor service
Food: Sushi was excellent. I would go again for sushi as there were many different exotic varieties of fish and was all made to perfection. It was explained very very well too. Service: was sub par for Michelin one. The waiter was good in describing each dish as it was brought to the table. However they did not try to go above and beyond for the price we were paying…..a stink bug landed on one of the mixing plate! When we brought it up to the server, he took the plate away, did not say anything and he was then gone for a long time..I would have expected him to 1. Bring a replacement plate 2. Apologize. None of that happened. We had to ask another server for a replacment plate while other waiters brought the sushi dishes. This was very disappointing. Also when we were leaving, there was no good bye or thank you for visiting. Would have loved to go again for the excellent food but service sucks!
Be the first to ReplyBest sushi restaurant in the DMV.
Sushi Nakazawa is the best Japanese Sushi restaurant in the DMV. The staff is attentive, especially with wine pairings and is descriptive about each of the nigiri pieces you have in a meal. Everyone in the DC area should try to be here at least once in their lifetime if they like sushi!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing and we will be back
One of the best Omakase we have ever had. Each bite was amazing and perfectly times. When there was rice the temperature was perfect. We made reservations at the bar as there is the only place you can order the chef’s menu with all the add ons included and some special treats. First I have to say from start the finish the staff was incredible, kind and so professional. The sommelier stopped by and I had a cocktail to start while my husband with (PBC) reviewed the alcohol free wine list with the som. This was the first som who was so well educated on the alcohol free wines. Anyways - back to the meal- every bite was amazing - and learned so much from the chef- it eas relaxing and enjoyable. We will be back!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic Omakase-- make sure to ask for the sushi counter!
Definitely ask for the counter! What is better than getting your food (and descriptions) straight from the chef after watching him prepare it? Such good fun and, of course, delicious food! Only negative: they need to give better directions to find the entrance. No good to start your special meal stressed out! But definitely worth it-- just add a few minutes to find your way! Brandon was great, and our sushi chef was perfect: gracious and talented and fun all at once. A budget-buster but worth the splurge!
Be the first to ReplyImpeccable food absolutely wrecked by sloppy service execution
My wife and I have celebrated our Anniversary at Sushi Nakazawa every year for 4 years. I also frequent the place whenever good friends are in to town and I want to take them somewhere special. I have always given the Chefs, the wait staff, and the servers great praise. I want to be clear that while this is a pretty bad review, the food here has always been and continues to be amazing. I expect more as far as service goes though. We won't be headed here for our anniversary next year and that makes us pretty sad. 1. We have always been treated warmly upon entering the restaurant, someone asks to take our coat, they lead us to our seats, and often refer to my previous visits there. Its always well orchestrated and its a great introduction to the place. This time the stewardess was dismissive and hadn't looked into our reservation at all. (She didn't know we were there for our anniversary, didn't know we had been there before, etc). If I'm going to fill out a form to get a reservation you might want to read it before I get there. Worst of all she was in such a hurry to seat my wife that she didn't wait for her to put her feet on the foot rest under the sushi bar and crushed her foot. By far our interaction with the stewardess colors this review the most. It was a horrible introduction, we didn't feel welcome, and it was sloppy. I don't expect any of that when I spend near a thousand dollars on a dinner. 2. The service is usually impeccable. The waiters pay attention to your handedness, they remind you of the drinks and accompaniments you've had in the past. They apologize ahead of time if there isn't something in stock they know you love. They offer up suggestions based on your past orders The waiter was pretty good this time. They noticed our interest in Krug and offered up an interesting story about the family who makes it. However, they spilled champagne on my wife. They also weren't very helpful with the drink menu and just kinda kept pushing us toward their drink parings. Over all the waiter was a 3/5 because of the dink spill and trying to push pairings we weren't interested in.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Omakase
Best sushi/sashimi I've ever had. Small, very expensive. Omakase style, nice selection of sake. Our meal was a $1000 for two of us, BUT we had add-ons, Toro caviar, Uni flights, nice alcohol. I little tough to find, use your GPS. Make reservations. Waitress did a great job of describing every dish.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food but ok experience
Disappointed. The food was very good but for a birthday celebration it was rushed, business like and not special. Maybe the bar feels more special but the dining table experience is not worthwhile.
Be the first to ReplyEating at Sushi Nakazwa felt like working at an auto plant assembly line
Even though we appreciated each sashimi course with its corresponding wine pairing, eating at Sushi Nakazawa felt like working at an auto plant assembly line. Each course was immediately served after the next. Enjoying Michelin-starred restaurants in Europe frequently, I am wondering if there are different standards for being awarded with a Michelin star in Europe and the US. Compared with restaurants Nagaya in Düsseldorf/Germany or Yamazoto in Amsterdam/Netherlands, which I visited recently, this restaurant clearly doesn’t deserve any mention in the guide Michelin, not to mention Michelin star, at all.
Be the first to ReplyA mystical experience
This is a bucket list sort of restaurant. The fish is of impeccable quality, it’s prepared perfectly, and it’s a chance to eat a quality of ingredient that just isn’t available elsewhere. I recommend the drink pairing. It is not cheap - for 2 of us with wine pairing + a few of the add-ons + tip it was $1,100. I would not go often, but it is certainly a mystical level experience.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible Sushi Experience
Birthday gift from my son...the best meal of my life. Our sushi was prepared by the executive chef, quality of the fish was incredible, execution was outstanding. The flavor and quality is difficult to describe without going through each of the 20+ courses. We had to eat slow as to not miss the layers flavor. The staff is equally outstanding, explaining the source of each seafood, how it is prepared and how best to enjoy it. Impossible to say which course was my favorite as each had its unique flavor. Un-heard-of list of sake. Incredible experience and recommended for any that enjoy authentic sushi.
Be the first to ReplyBest Sushi in DC
This is a new restaurant and it is small, but spectacular. Getting a reservation at the sushi counter is worth the extra money. The interaction with the chefs is fun and worthwhile. The sommelier is very knowledgeable and not interested in selling you the most expensive sake, but the best sake for the meal. We have only dined at the sushi counter, so I can’t vouch for the service at the tables, but the fish is fresh and well prepared. Worth the visit.
Be the first to ReplyOverall very good - would give it 4.5
I was here on Sunday night with a friend. we both had been interested in trying this restaurant for some time, and especially more since the hotel re-branded from Trump. Anyway, overall, we really liked it. I'd rate it a 4.5. The food is very good and the service overall is very good. We sat in the dining room and did see the chefs working - it was mesmerizing to see them doing so. I was happy that they let me substitute the uni piece for something else - I dont like uni and so was happy for the substitution. We added one of the additions - a futomaki beef course - which was good and shareable. Overall, the food was good, the service was smooth and efficient, but it just felt robotic. The rice was good and sticky - perfectly cooked. I enjoyed it, the fish was good, and am glad to have experienced it, but given the pricepoint, it wouldnt be my go-to, with the exception of for a very special occasion.
Be the first to ReplyNot worth it, over rated!
Extraordinarily over rated, $880 for 2 people. Allegedly 20 courses, was 7. Food average, waitress was excellent. Left my card there, Tried calling 4 days in a row, no reply, they had my email and phone number, no out reach. Said I could only collect my card in person with ID
Be the first to ReplyThe best sushi you can get
A truly luxurious sushi experience. If you are a sushi fan, you have to try this. Some very unique and all high end pieces. The service is top notch.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Food! Amazing service!
The food and the experience was amazing! We were fortunate enough to grab a seat at the counter and the whole evening was special. The selections at the counter were fixed and the pieces ranged from smoked salmon to mackerel to four different cuts of tuna. Don’t even think about asking for soy sauce! We ordered wagu beef with caviar as an extra which I highly recommend. The staff would appear behind us and explain each of the dishes. Service and attentiveness was special. They mastered even the small details. They noticed I was left handed and moved my finger towel to the left side of my dish… They remembered which coat was mine without asking… Really recommend this restaurant!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent fish but a feeling of rushed service
Reservation system: First, the restaurant does not answer the phone during business hours (and by the way still refers to the Waldorf Astoria as the Trump Hotel) and calling is one way you are supposed to be able to make reservations. Found it weird that when the reservations were released on Resy 14 days before the day I wanted to dine that more than half of them were gone (at the top of the morning), which was very weird and frustrating. Managed to nab a spot, but they should pick up the phone-- on to food/service Food- The cuts of fish were excellent. The sushi rice was amazing. You have two options-- the classic omakase and the chef's omakase, which is more expensive, covers the supplements that you can also pay per supplement. The Chef's Omakase was amazing. The wine/sake/tea list is crazy expensive and they should add in tasting notes on the wines so that diners can make faster, informed decisions especially when there was a feeling that we needed to quickly make decisions (next paragraph). The sommelier was great and knowledgeable but still tasting notes would be more informative so that we can better digest a complicated wine list. Service- The servers were welcoming and friendly but I felt like they were rushing us from the beginning. How we can immediately make a decision on wine when the binder is huge to go through. They did a good job of explaining the source and preparation of the sushi and the Chef's recommendation; however, some of them spoke too fast and low. The acoustics of the small restaurant are not great-- so they should work on that. The servers were okay with questions but one waiter in particular gave an impression of being annoyed when we asked to repeat and brought us our bill like 5 seconds after we finished the dessert course, not even asking like do you want a dessert wine. In my mind I was like oh okay wow- you want us to go. We are paying an incredible amount of money to savor and reflect on the delectable tastes of the sushi, which is I would think is what the Chef wants us to do, not to be there to scarf it down quickly and get out. Overall, excellent food but they need to reflect on how they can make diners feel relaxed and not that we need to get in and get out.
Be the first to ReplySave your money: Avoid Sushi Nakazawa
—Assessment: Avoid it. It’s not worth it. Save your money.
—Location: At the back of the Trump International Hotel in DC. We hit the foyer before dinner. Dark and empty—there were only 3 other people in the huge foyer in addition to us.
—Price: You have the option of ordering the classic sushi set menu at $150/person or the delux at $250/person (including sushi dusted w caviar and other exotic items). So it’s a special occasion, and we don’t go often, so we order two classic set menus (now $300 plus really crazy pricey drinks). Both sets include 20-21 pieces of sushi. A set cannot be shared. The sushi arrives in seven “flights” consisting of 1 to 3 pieces of sushi on each plate. We were prepared to be wowed.
—Ambiance. It’s nice, modern, some Japanese elements with black tiled walls, wood, tables, and a sushi bar. An attendant checks coats.
—Sushi rice: For a couple that has spent nearly 4 years in Japan, grown and harvested rice, and helped prepare Sushi rice, our assessment was that the rice was not freshly prepared, was slightly mushy rather than sticky, did not have sufficient sushi vinegar. The texture was off.
—Wasabi: Wasabi is traditionally placed between the rice and the fish. I did not perceive any wasabi in my first piece of sushi, so I removed the fish, and I saw no wasabi. When I asked the waitress to ask the chef to prepare the sushi in a traditional Japanese style, she said “look, there is wasabi [yes—there was indeed a 5 mm speck], it’s expensive and real wasabi, if you want more wasabi I can bring you the fake green stuff and that’s going to cost you extra.”
—Fish: It’s all about the fish. The fish was not flavorful, and rather bland. I have—I’ll be honest—had better tasting fish and “American” sushi at the mall in Tyson’s, for a fraction of the price and the pretense. If I were eating inexpensive sushi, no big deal, but this meal would have been pushing at least $400, so there are expectations there.
—Drinks: The drinks listing comes in a massive 3-ring binder, with maybe 40+ pages of various wines, mixed drinks, and sake, by the glass or the bottle, ranging from $20–$300+. Ok. Can’t complain about the drinks, themselves, but the price? Ok, we’re eating in a pretentious joint attached to Trump hotel.
—Service: I informed the waitress after the first flight of sushi that it did not meet our expectations, and would ask that the chef make the sushi in a more traditional manner for the price. She volunteered that she would invite the manager and the chef to speak with us, she returned, and said they could stop further service, that the sushi is prepared to exacting standards and meets their quality, and that the chef is even from Japan, and they would have to charge us for the 6 pieces of sushi in our first flights. I pointed out that we consumed only four (out of a total of 42 pieces), and would pay for that and our drinks if sushi preparation could not be improved (it was actually our preference to stay). She returned again, stated no one would meet us or talk to us. The waitress’ tone seemed unnecessarily combative.
—Result: The restaurant comped our 4 pieces of sushi and our tea. We were prepared to pay for what we consumed, but appreciate that the restaurant didn’t charge us anything at all. That was the only nice thing about the evening. That, and the cute lotus-root chopstick rests on the table.
—Will we go again, or should you go? Absolutely not. It’s a high price for incredibly mediocre food and service.
Good but......
This is a difficult find if you do not know Washington. It lists as the Trump Hotel but they will not let you in from the Hotel's front.
Once you descend into the restaurant, you enter a noisy crowded scene offering little regard for its Japanese origins. You then confront a significant cost for the sushi which, if you pair with the premium sake pairing will leave you with a bill for two approaching $1,000. Worse, the Sake flight included one wine (non-sake). The staff was competent and capably explained the sushi as well as the sake but accents and masks certainly impair understanding.
The salmon flight as well as the whitefish were extraordinary. However the service was too hurried.
Sushi Factory that is not worth the price.
Sushi is mediocre and drink prices are outrageous. They have a bunch of add-ins that we don’t recommend. They don’t care about the product, it is purely a money grab. Service is okay but when they run your credit card, they fill-in the tip for you and ask if it is okay! This is not Michelin star service or food. It is cheapened by “different” levels of sushi that most people could not differentiate. Honestly, I do not trust the restaurant. If I could get my money back I would. Bottom line, skip this sushi experience.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely the best sushi and sake I have ever experienced!
I have always read the press about Sushi Nakazawa first in New York City and the next one in Washington D.C. and figured how much better than other top sushi places can it be. Well it is the best sushi I have had anywhere in the United States; I have never had sushi in Japan where Nakazawa was thoroughly trained. I have watched the video's showing Nakazawa as an apprentice in Japan. All I can say is the focus and attention to detail Nakazawa put's into procuring and processing his raw material is tremendously evident from the moment you take your first bite. I had a knock off version at a restaurant in Philadelphia a month earlier and it fell far short and was at it's best just okay. The only minor hitch in dining at Sushi Nakazawa in D.C. is actually finding the restaurant which happens to be on the lower back corner of the Trump hotel in D.C. After you enter however you become completely engrossed in watching the preparation of each piece; anticipating the taste along with the perfectly matched sake pairing. I highly recommend the premium sake pairing to accompany your meal. I am not a huge sake fan but instead am a huge wine fan, the pairings however of the premium sake make me wanting more.

I’ve had some amazing sushi in my lifetime, but this place now claims the #1 spot! (Yes, Theresa Hudzinski, even more so than The W in Hong Kong, and yes, Jack Rumbaugh, even more so than Ariake in Reston!) 🍣 🥢

-Golden Ossetra Caviar (with edible gold on top!)
-Big-Fin Reef Squid
-Alaskan Snow Crab
-Kanazawa Pale Ale from Ishikawa

Authentic Japanese restaurant
Wonderful food. Great service. Can’t recommend it highly enough. A very authentic experience like being in Japan for a fine meal.
Be the first to ReplyStunning sophistication!
We went there to celebrate our son's birthday. Since it was a special occasion, we opted for a special restaurant! We love Japanese food and the "natural" option was Sushi Nakazawa. We sat at the Chef's counter, so we had the chance to see how the food was prepared. We opted for omakase. So, it was about 20 different sushi's and dessert. Each piece was very unique, subtle and sophisticated. The preparation was delicate and carefully crafted. Even the wasabi was freshly grated! Service was very professional and effective, the same the recommendation for sake. All in all, a great and unique experience. Even though it is expensive, it is worth every penny spent on this culinary experience!

The taste is really good along with the service, the assorts of sushi is magnificent, the prices are a bit high, however compared to other sushi bars, it is very cheap. 10/10 would recommend if you like sushi!!
Be the first to ReplyGreat Food, Great Service
I've had some good meals in my life traveling around the world and this is right up there, if not the best experience I've ever had. First off, this is a date place or a place that you take your parents for a special occasion...this is not a 'Boys Night Out' type of place. It's a fairly small restaurant with seating at the counter and probably 10 tables in the dining room. All the reviews say to sit at the counter but I disagree - for 3 hours I'd rather be in the dining room vs seated high at the counter...especially if you're with a girl... but that's my opinion. You only have 3 choices which are all 'tasting menus' and you truly go on a sushi journey. I opted for the middle option ($150/person) which included the wagyu beef and it was the best beef I've ever had. You can also get the classic option that doesn't include the beef for $120 or the option that includes caviar for $180. For special occasions or if you're a foodie, this is place is a must.
