Sushi Nakazawa New York Reviews from The Last Year
It was my husband's birthday and I thought our reservation
It was my husband's birthday and I thought our reservation was at 6, not 5. Long story short, I was, inexcusably, 40 minutes late. Instead of telling us to take a hike, they accommodated us and could not have been more gracious. They saved his birthday (and my butt!). Forever grateful that they saved the day.
Sushi was plentiful and quality was good, but not amazing.
You have to be ready to eat FAST given the quantity of pieces, and come starving. We had lunch and were hungry but not famished, so started to slow down toward the end. It is 21 pieces after all. However, the chef didn't try to accommodate for the slower pace and tried to get us to hurry up, and even made facial expressions and comments to the other chefs at how slow we were eating. Other diners also got lengthy explanations about the different types of fish and their chefs even showed them the fish, etc. while ours just dumped the sushi on the plate without comment other than "mackerel" or "sea bream" etc. One of the most stressful and unhappy eating experiences we've had.
Best ever, I can see why it was featured in so many
Best ever, I can see why it was featured in so many different shows and movies. A bit overpriced, but then again it's NYC so it's not so bad
Finally got to try one of the most renowned omakase sushi
Finally got to try one of the most renowned omakase sushi spot, @sushinakazawa, and it was delicious! Love these authentic restaurants that serve fresh and high quality ingredients, and no fancy decorations or toppings to distract. For a better experience, I do wish they could be more proactive about cleaning the sushi board between pieces, and refilling the cups.
Glad to check this place off my bucket list! Really nice
Glad to check this place off my bucket list! Really nice place, but the sushi was mediocre at best- you can definitely get the same quality of sushi for a much better price. I don't regret coming here because it had been on my list of places to try, but I wouldn't come back. The place is easy to miss- I'm pretty sure I walked by it a handful of times and didn't know it existed. Decor was nice and the chef was great- explained everything in detail. Highly recommend getting the beef wagyu as an additional item!

Be aware! This place has some nerve! We visited there to celebrate the birth of our son, we got a gift card from our friends which we used to pay part of the bill and completed the rest with our card. We added a nice gratuity of 20% (what we thought was 20%) but ended up paying DOUBLE what we had to pay since they just "assumed" we wanted to pay a 50% tip and charged our card for the entire amount AND the gift card. We saw the charge only a few days later, it was impossible to get a hold of the place and when I finally did - they said they could do NOTHING with it since they already paid their employees. (????) I would expect a fancy, $ 300-per-person place like Nakazawa, to be able to figure it out and compensate for the mistake they made with their employees and not take it out of their customer's pockets. ***Just make sure you check the bill 3 times before you leave*** We will NOT be returning.

Came here for my boyfriend's bday dinner.
Sashimi were fresh and liked how they substituted the items we requested not to have in the course. Staff delivered elegant and professional service. I'd say it's a little overrated for what they're advertised. But if you're only concerned about the freshness of the fish. This place would definitely one of the omakase you must try.
The omakase menu was absolutely delicious.
Each piece of nigiri was excellent- fresh, buttery, and did not need anything additional. 10/10. The service was impeccable. Ambiance is romantic. Must try restaurant- top quality
My girlfriend and I had an incredible night.
The ambiance, service, and food were all excellent. Loved the add ons and the sake pairing took our night to the next level. Both of us were so impressed and it was a special night! Unfortunately, the entire experience was tainted when we received the bill and noticed a 3% "interchange fee" for using a credit card. This fee wasn't disclosed on Resy, the website, or the menu. And to be clear, it's not about the money! Obviously, we spent a ton on this dinner. But the surprise fee at the end just gave us the feeling of being nickel and dimed. I'd like to encourage Sushi Nakazawa's management to review the New York State laws currently on the books pertaining to credit card surcharges as well as those that take effect in a few days (Feb 11, 2024). Don't ruin a good night with a sneaky credit card fee.
After 10 years in New York, I finally made it to the famed
After 10 years in New York, I finally made it to the famed Sushi Nakazawa. A 21 piece omakase for $180, this has to be the absolute best value omakase in NYC considering all factors. What an amazing experience from beginning to end. The service and ambiance are so refined, I really felt like I was back in Japan. We had a 12:45 reservation for lunch on a Saturday (still 21 pieces for $180). We were seated exactly on time in very comfortable seats at the sushi counter. To start, you choose from a list of additions to the omakase- we added the Wagyu which was worth it. Please do yourself a favor and get the sake pairing for $90! My math, you're already saving $100 on the excellent value that Nakazawa offers... The sake pairing really made this experience wonderful. With every few bites of sushi, they brought a very cool glass of sake. A pink sake, creamy sake... everything was delicious and well curated. The sushi, of course, is excellent. My favorite bites are always the tuna, but the scallop is a close second. What a lovely, memorable experience. I couldn't recommend this more.
Excellent lunch
Excellent omakase lunch! Everything was very creatively prepared. Service was great. Being at the counter is the best experience. Recommend the truffle supplement, which I think was served on a piece of toro. The owner happened to be eating with a guest alongside us, which was cool.
Sushi Nakazawa’s omakase experience sets a very high standard!
Chef Nakazawa’s twenty-course omakase owill blow you away with the assortment of fish and the hidden flavors that you will savor for as long as you possibly can. Service was impeccable and the champaign list made me extremely happy! It is not an inexpensive meal, but the experience is priceless!
Disappointment
Japanese cuisine demands harmony on everything. Design, service, noise, and endless things is necessary to get the right harmony. There is nothing to say for the chef since everything was good, but the rest needs a lot of improvement. Servers needs to learn that client is not a student that can be looked from up. Arrogance has no place in any restaurant even with a Michelin star. With low ceilings and big A/C units you feel the wind. Tables are to high for the banches. Elevator music affects the volume of sound badly. Whole decoration has to be reset to get the harmony and serenity. It is the only restaurant that I know who charges 3% extra for paying by credit card. No Apple Pay, no contactless.
Never thought this would happen…
I was here to treat my two friends to omakase for their first experience. I did a google search and found this sushi place and wanted to try it. When the server took me inside, I realized I made a mistake of making a reservation for a dining table as they escorted me to the dining table instead of the omakase bar. I was a little bit disappointed since my friends are visiting NY for the first time, so I decided to at least ask to move to another time tonight or to another date. If it didn’t work, I was ready to be told no and pay the $450. Instead of simply explaining it's not possible or finding an alternative time, the manager John Shin who handled this matter was furious and started explaining that it was a zero sum game and I was making the wrong decision by choosing the lose lose scenario. My friends and I were startled at the sudden and utterly condescending tone in which he spoke. At this time, I didn't want to dine here either now or ever. I had never been treated this rudely even at a McDonalds. Although I recognize my own mistakes and maybe I shouldn’t have even asked for a waive of fees. But just a simple “no it’s our policy and we cannot waive the cancellation fee sir.” would have been the end of it. I am not new to “dumb fee”. I maybe stupid but I was not being unreasonable, obnoxious or rude. And hear me out, if you think I am all at fault, fine. But please read some other negative reviews on Yelp. You’ll find similarly themed low reviews. I wish I gave up immediately and just paid 450 and walked away.
Racist experience—not worth it!!
Had an absolutely horrible experience at sushi nakazawa. As we were waiting for our table, the gm told us we had to leave because we had given him feedback years ago that his behavior was racist. Talk about fragility. Three doctors asked to leave a restaurant. Never again
Suprised
I'll start this off with the preface Im never the kind of person to leave reviews. But me and my family decided to do a michelin star tour for sushi restaurants after the month of fathers day! However on Sunday July16th I had a lead server that put a very bad taste on our experience at this establishment. To start we had reservations at 6pm and as soon as we walked in we had our table waiting, which was excellent. Their was a server in a Blue suit who had a smug look when we entered and sat down at the restaurant. I have no idea if he had a long day, or was tired, I understand people can be sick of fake smiles and welcoming. But usually restaurants of this caliber your greeted with big smiles and warmth. In fact many people have dire need to work at such businesses. Everyone else was great. We were given the menu with NO explanation but like my family normaly operates at michelin stared restaurants, we each decided to order EVERY item off the menu! Our sake glasses were constantly filled and food came out on time. Service was very attentive but the said waiter who worked July 16th on Sunday may need additional training on etiquette. If you have an issue with guest or can't handle their request the first thing you do is APOLOGISE and then give explanation. You don't tell guest even at high rated restaurants "no your NOT ALOUD" without reason. This was not a corner of the road restaurant so maybe i expected better after experiencing other places. This same waiter had a European accent so maybe he isn't familiar on proper ways to handle things in america for excelsior service. I know my stay in Japan the people went above and beyond to accommodate and were very humble and refused cash in pocket many times. Well now here is the issue! I wasn't videoing but I was trying to take a photo of one out of the (5)"world class sake" bottles we ordered for keepssake. As soon as my phone was drawn out this gentlemen who was serving us, and explaining why this 150 dollar bottle of sake was so special to shot me down and said "NO VIDEOS" In a VERY nasty tone and same SMUG look! Very shocking and embarrassing for a party of four who was celebrating and ordered everything to be quite honest! I hope this is not the standard for this restaurant after having been to several Michelin stared restaurants. Let me help the man in blue from July 16th! If their is company protocol for no one to take video or photo of the sake presentation, you can simply say "SORRY sir but we don't allow videos" and this is normal for service at restaurants highly rated and not even Michelin stared! We have been to sushi Tskukimi, Sechhu Yokota, Yoshino or even Masa Sushi and had STELLAR performance from their Michelin star staff with emaculate attitude with presentations of food. We were so taken back and actually very embarrased his tone and attitude. If this is what the management teaches their staff for such a lucrative buisness SHAME ON THEM! And if this same server selectively told my table not to even photo or video without ANY reason and he had no right, well shame on him. This is the year 2023 and everyone enjoys social media presentations! We deserved an explanation and NOT an insult! Sake was decent , sushi was similar to nobu for that high price but the a5 wagu, sea urchin umi, shrimp sushi and otoro with truffles was out of this world. Some of the sushi rice came out VERY warm wich is a big NO because it can degrade the taste of the fish. Salmon cuts were stellar as the shaves wasabi! Gold dusted caviar was normal but nothing out of town. Shame I don't think it's worth coming back to pay nearly 3,000 dollars with tip for not above and beyond from the coveted "Michelin star service" ..Expecially from a lead server which it appeared. All other servers were amazing and didn't mine the camera! Thanks guys for giving us good time but I doubt I will ever come back. My father thoroughly enjoyed but i hope someone teaches this server from SUNDAY in the blue suit on July 16th proper etiquette with dealing with patrons! Your not allowed to talk to them as children! Expecially for a restaurant of that caliber wow! Their are so many top rated places in New york where you are treated so nice as you order and eat. Very dissapointed. Unless everyone comes to this place and orders everything off the menu with bottles of sake to receive subpar service? Wow good luck! And I'm not speaking above anyone. I have family who work in the service industry and when you speak to people you speak with tact and kindness! And you most importantly give them reason for the yes or NO. So shocking this happened but this is New york city? Can spend thousands elsewhere and have much better attitude from the service department! Reservations was at 6pm sharp. Management can check the tabs I'm sure. Please maybe contour the staff on how they treat guest, unless everyone comes in buying the whole dinner menu? And if everyone does this which I doubt, you can skip pass my review and not evaluate your employee. Wow that was a first for my family most definitely 😳 👌
Awesome quality, presentation and service
This was one of the best omakase experiences we had. The ambiance is kind of bland, but the service, the quantity of the fish and the value was top notch. I would recommend it whole heartedly.
Amazing selection of sushi
4.5, really eye-opening selection of sushi! Very expensive wine The set was $150 for 20 pieces. Definitely recommend to try
Pre cut fish for select counter!
We (3 of us) reserved the selected counter for our meal. Counter sits 5 and the settings is nice and pleasant. The chief came in and began preparation. To my SURPRISE, he took out trays of PRE-CUT sushi and began to make the sushis from them! We ordered a supplement uni tasting for $50, making the assumption “tasting” represents a few of… instead, the uni was one scope of “ special” uni…. You make your own judgement, is it worth the price to look observe a chief to make sushi from pre cut (can you imagine the multiple hands and environment they went through)?. Not to mention a scoop of uni for $50. You decide
