Be the first to ReplyI would not go back
I ended up with food poisoning after eating at this restaurant on March 13, 2024. Our reservation was for four people, and I chose the pan-seared salmon accompanied by rice and asparagus for my meal. Unfortunately, within ninety minutes, I found myself in a state of illness characterized by bouts of vomiting. I am confident that I had a foodborne illness from the salmon. No one else at our table got sick. Additionally, we had poor food service as the kitchen or the waitress failed to place an order for one of the meals. Although we were informed that it was on the way, it took way too long to arrive, and the three of us had already finished our dinners when her food arrived. I sent an email to the restaurant but received no response. I would not have shared the bad experience online if someone had responded to my email.
Be the first to ReplyConfused menu
I find this place confusing. It seems they make a variety of cocktails and seem to do a significant portion of their business at the bar. That said the nonalcoholic menu is virtually nonexistent, despite the fact that they have the ingredients to make many things. As an Asian Mexican fusion restaurant, the menu can be categorized as interesting tacos, and sushi rolls, and while the food and atmosphere have a bit of chic appearance, and the staff are pleasant, it is pricey for what you get and Iโm left wondering what I would come back for.
Be the first to ReplyAsian Fusion a must try
I love Asian Fusion and this restaurant was definitely up there with the best. We ordered way too much for the two of us, my hubby and I, which seems to be a theme for us. We started with the Jalapeno Yellowtail crudo which was incredibly flavorful and fresh!! Also had the Crispy Rock Shrimp, which was lightly breaded with great flavor, and the Korean beef tacos. My hubby loved them. Not my favorite, but that is just because not a big fan of kimchee. We then had the Shaking beef and the Pad Thai pork! Highly recommend both. Overall it was a fabulous meal and would certainly return next time in Scottsdale!!
Be the first to ReplyGood food and service-AC a problem
First visit. Enjoyed the food. Crispy shrimp and Ceviche were excellent as was corn and fried rice. Service great. Different kind of menu and a little pricey (but then again it is Scottsdale). They are definitely having a challenge keeping up with the Phoenix heat. Restaurant was way too hot with too little airflow. Probably over 92 degrees. Several tables left without ordering. Most of exterior is glass and gets morning and afternoon sun. Open kitchen contributes to the heat. We will go back when the daily temps are back below 80.
Be the first to ReplyIโd skip this place
First time here. Friends and family. Great serviceโฆ food was average- nothing special. Very nice inside- however the AC wasnโt working (if it was it was HOT)! Sweating through a meal is never nice. Ordered the Sake and returned it because it was like sugar water- way too sweet- but that was my mistake. Ordered a vodka tonic and that was very watered down and below average.
Be the first to ReplyChewed gum in my sushi roll
This place deserves 0 stars and to be shut down. It was the most disgusting restaurant experience of my entire life. My second bite of food was a piece of sushi, and It didn't feel right. When I spit it out I found CHEWED GUM INSIDE MY SUSHI! When I reported the issue, rather than addressing the problem, management accused me of trying to get food for free or something. I have TMJ, never chew gum because of it, and my appetite was completely lost. I was offended, and when I attempted to record the accusation, management said I wasn't permitted to record anything and that they were asking me to leave. She claimed that I threatened her life on private property and called 8 cops on me! I have video with proof that no one's life was threatened and that "Karen" took it to the extreme. Maybe one day her boss will reach out or simply playback more of the video from that night to see how management failed so miserably. Don't waste your time with this place. The food was terrible anyway on top of the worst service ever.
Be the first to ReplyFun atmosphere, average food and service
It has been at least 18 months since last visiting Suma Maya and now I remember why this restaurant is not one I regularly visit. We sat at the bar and were quickly greeted by the bartender. We had walked in at opening time, so the bar seating was wide open, with only one other couple seated at the bar. Would have liked a purse hook closer to my seat, but made do with the hook next to my partner. We ordered a bottle of Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay which arrived in a wine cooler. The bartender did not ask if we wanted to sample the wine, which was fine, poured us each a glass, and never offered to pour us a glass again as our wine glasses emptied. We ordered the Rainbow and Rock Shrimp Tempura rolls from the Dinner - Signature Rolls section. Both were tasty, nice presentation, but were slightly warm which was not expected. The order came out of the kitchen very quickly, which led me to believe they had been pre made. When ready to leave, we had to ask for our check which was surprising as we had had our plates and glasses cleared away some time before. Big surprise to see an additional charge on our check which was not stated on the menu or anywhere in the restaurant. We were told it was to cover the staffโs health care coverage. We could have challenged the charge, but how do you tell your bartender we donโt want him to have health care? Shouldnโt this be the responsibility of the owner to pay? And how do we know that money is actually going to cover the cost of health care? Based on average food, service, and unfortunate extra charge that did not enhance our experience, we wonโt return.
Be the first to ReplyBest dinner we had during out Scottsdale stay!
Incredible spot and I highly recommend. We ate at a few high end restaurants in Scottsdale during our stay and Sumomaya was by far the best. We started with a couple sushi rolls and they were some of the best I have had. Simple, yet the flavor was outstanding. My wife had the sea bass and I had the shaking beef and both were top notch. Just really amazing flavors from everything we tried. The drinks were also great as well!
Be the first to ReplyNot Worth The Hype
This place came highly recommended to us, so we went in for a look. The place looks very beautiful inside (modern and comfortable). The food was not memorable. We were told that this place is very popular, so we went in on a weekday as soon as it opened for dinner at 5PM (they don't open for lunch except for brunch on Sunday). We didn't have a reservation, and there was no wait, so we were seated immediately. There was plenty of parking. This place is pricey and the food we had was just average. We were expecting an explosion of flavors and something we would not forget, but not so. Service was mediocre at best. We won't return.
Be the first to Replysuper spicy tuna rolls
not you average sushi. great Asian Mexican fusion options . The spicy tuna roll is very spicy. great service and open kitchen
Be the first to ReplyTERRIBLE MANAGMENT
I am very disappointed in the customer service at this establishment, I live in Chicago, and I have never worked with a restaurant that is SO unaccommodating. We are traveling to AZ with 14 girls for a bachelorette party, and the bride was very excited to eat here. When we tried to make reservations we were told that if we have more then 12 people we would have to go with a preset menu. I explained that we have a lot of dietary restrictions including some people who are vegan, and they proceeded to tell me we can do a vegan preset. Why are 14 people forced to do a VEGAN preset when 2 people are vegan in the group? If we had 12 people we could have ordered off the menu and it is a $1000 minimum. I asked if they can make an exception for 14 people and increase the minimum to $1100 and they refused. I asked for the manager and he said he was the manager. I asked to speak to someone else and he refused to let me speak to someone else. He ended the conversation with telling me I can just bring 12 people... that is ABSOLUTELY RUDE and unprofessional. He was already aware that we were traveling into Scotsdale for a bachelorette party, yet suggested I disinvite 2 people? DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME GOING HERE!
Be the first to ReplyInteresting Concept
The food and ambiance here is amazing! An interesting concept with cool dishes. I would recommend this place to anyone that goes to Scottsdale.
Be the first to ReplyGotta try this place when you are hungry
We heard that the experience of this place was good so we booked reservations. Well overall the experience was very good, just had a couple of concerns. The $20 optional all you can drink is not worth it. Not enough time to drink that much. The food selections were all great. I think we tried every appetizer option and someone at our 4 top enjoyed them. We unfortunately were seated in the corner table by the sushi bar and had bar gnats or some small bugs that was annoying. Main lunch entrees were very good too. So overall good experience
Be the first to ReplyGreat Sushi and ceviche
As always, the food was excellent and the service at the bar was very quick even though they were very crowded
Be the first to ReplySumo sel-impressed
Iโve been enjoying this restaurant since it opened. Good food and fun vIbe. However, something untoward has happened recently, perhaps new management? In any event, the place is way too self- impressed. I received three text messages and four phone calls to confirm my reservation. On arrival, the entire parking lot was blocked off for valet service, essentially making valet mandatory, which is ridiculous for a casual restaurant at 6 PM on a Sunday night. Despite having confirmed our reservation for a standard indoor table, upon arrival we were shuffled off to a high top bar table in a highly-trafficked area. When we objected, we were advised that our only other option was to come back 90 minutes later for a standard table. Or, we could sit outside on the patioโ in August, in Phoenix. To say that the young hostesses were supercilious would be kind. We finally demanded to speak to a manager, who was able to arrange a table for us on the condition that we not stay more than 90 minutes so he could turn the table. He did comp a desert, which was a nice gesture, but the mood was broken. As we left, we could not help but notice at least 4 open tables adjacent to ours. What was the rush? This had been intended to be a special night with my daughter before she returns to college. Scottsdale is full of alternatives . Next time, we will try one.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, good atmosphere
Beautiful restaraunt. Love the idea. The service does not match. Food is amazing, atmosphere amazing, but we were throughly dissapointed with the service we recieved.
Be the first to ReplyReally wanted to like this place
Wait staff lacks training and knowledge of the dishes served. Felt like we were being rushed the entire meal. The roll were ordered (Fuego) was rather bland. The sauce of the wagyu beef dish was good but the beef was low quality, for sure not wagyu. Beautiful decor and great music ( loud but that did not bother me).
Be the first to ReplyCreative food ruined by Loud obtrusive atmosphere
Seated at a table for four on a Friday at 8 PM and could barely talk without yelling.
Never thought this would be a quiet atmosphere but the excitement of the music at that level was more obtrusive to the meal than supplemental to the evening's experience.... DJ did a good job, just about twice as loud as it should be or have areas that are quieter if desired
Food was beautifully and creatively presented. Excellent taste and flavors, but overpriced.
Awesome Flavors
The most awesome combinations of favor in a sushi restaurant ever! The chef is creative and brilliant in his creations.
Be the first to ReplyFlavors!
We did takeout from Sumo Maya, first visit in 2 years and the food is still unbelievably fantastic (bacon wrapped dates, shaking beef, grilled mushrooms, and Mexican street corn).
Be the first to ReplyFantastic, unique, and delicious
This is our favorite restaurant in Scottsdale! It's a brilliant concept - a fusion of Mexican and Asian. We went back multiple times during our visit because it was so extraordinary. Everything we tried was outstanding.
Among the highlights: wood-fired edamame (best edamame we've ever had - spicy and with flavors you won't find anywhere else!); any of the fish dishes (such as the Chilean sea bass - wow!), any of the rice dishes (the kimchi fried rice is phenomenal, again if you like spicy food!)... Truly all of it was amazing.
Simple just stunning
We visited Sumo Maya on boxing day and were truly blown away...
It's dimly lit with a cool vibe, but not pretentious in any way.
The food is based on a tapas style menu which is perfect as the portions are small enough for you to try lots of different plates, which you are definitely going to want to do.
The fusion of the two different styles (Mexican & Asian) are blended together perfectly giving you some of the most flavoursome and delicious food going.
I would highly recommend this restaurant and the next time we travel over from the UK, Sumo Maya will be the first place we book!
Endless Brunch - An Experience!
I really enjoyed my experience with the Endless Brunch. I do think we were blessed to have a really nice server who didnโt restrict which alcoholic beverage you had to stick to so I was able to have a Bloody Mary and then switch to Mimosas. He also was lenient with the 1 1/2 reservation time restriction and we were able to relax & enjoy our meals & conversation without rushing. FYI- You are given all of the menu items and then you must choose one entree to eat as well. You are given so much food that it can be crazy if you have to shove it in. The breakfast pancake tacos & the wontons were our favorites. Not a huge fan of the oatmeal. I enjoyed my tuna poke bowl as well.
Love the tree in the middle of the restaurant! Overall a great experience. I do agree with other reviews that it can be quite loud when the restaurant is full. Might not be a place if that is an issue for you.
Donโt waste your time
Pros: cocktails were delicious. Our waitress was friendly and helpful
Cons: way too loud. Food was either over-spiced or extremely bland. Steak tacos were dry with no flavor, edamame was inedible it was so sour and spicy- flavors didnโt mix. Thai basil sushi had no taste and spicy crab was basically grocery store crab dip spread on a rice roll
