St. JOHN Bread and Wine London Reviews from The Last Year
Longer review to follow.
Definitely lives up to their long term reputation for perfecting simple, brilliant British cuisine. Be sure to get whatever is recommended. Best chicken liver toast I ever eaten, served alongside brandied prune and cornichons.
Good and simple food
Our choice goes to this 'modern traditional' restaurant as defined by the Michelin guide. Simple place, well frequented, fast service, the waiters are kind, the maitre is kind but not too much (ready to correct any pronunciation defects of us Italians). The starters are good and at the same time simple, perhaps a little too simple... The courses are appreciable, prepared with good quality ingredients and without too many frills. The only flaw found is in the service of the wine which is brought to the table directly in the glass and is not poured from the bottle. Overall, a good experience that I recommend to anyone who wants to dine in a non-touristy place.
Worth going just for the bread and butter
I do like this brand, we had a lovely meal for lunch today. Friendly kind and caring service. Really nothing to fault. A recommendation that is given without reservation.
Will be back again and again. Just awesome.
Amazing menu and team. We had a nice selection of the small plates and 2 of the large to share with a side and was shocked that our bill with drinks was so reasonable. For the quality of food and service I feel we got a bargain. Will be back as soon as I can. Defo worth the trip down from the midlands
Always something different to try
Good vibe in this bright minimalist room. Friendly waiting staff. Interesting menu, best bit today was the pate 👏 Always something different to try.
The Best Nose/Tail
Excellent nose to tail dining. St John continues to lead the movement and after many years remains innovative. Delicious food, excellent service and a very good wine list.
Last Nite in London
We came here on the assumption that bone marrow was on the evening menu. Excited we came early for dinner rez. Not. The manager on duty sat for a chat as we enjoyed our wine. This was one of AB’s fav stops back in the day for its unique nose to tail dining ethos. Did I I say ethos? Wat? The manager was kind enough to transfer our rez to St John Restaurant by Smithfield Market. Much appreciated. So off we walked. Thank youse 🤙🏼
Classy but unpretentious restaurant.
Excellent restaurant serving perfectly cooked fish. The ambiance is unpretentious and the service from Ronnie was friendly, professional and seamlessly efficient: not only did the food arrive in good time but the bill appeared as if through her powers of telepathy. We ate and were served well: it proved to be a very pleasant experience.
Another excellent meal at St John
Always exceptional. St John never fails to deliver. First time at Bread and Wine, a cosier version of Smithfield.
Very good
Our second visit to Bread and Wine and I think we prefer it to the original restaurant in Smithfield, which we have been long time fans of. Once again we enjoyed the very friendly service from the young staff, the delightfully British menu and the comfortable surroundings. Recommended
Two words can sum up this place: "must try"
I took my wife here for our anniversary a few weeks ago because it has always been one of my favourites and it certainly did not disappoint. The food was impeccable as always, especially if you embrace the nose to tail ethos. The wine list offers great interest at a variety of price points, and the service was absolutely on point and very generous in honour of the occasion. It is also in a great part of London to explore (although I may be biased, having once lived around the corner). In short, I wholeheartedly recommend eating here!
I wanted to love this place, I really did.
Eating at a St. John establishment has been on my bucket list forever since watching Bourdain do a segment with Fergus Henderson back in the day with bone marrow on toast and black pudding with eggs. I was on business with colleagues and able to score a reservation within walking distance of our billet. It was to be my last (and hopefully best) meal while abroad and I figured I saved the best for last. It is an attractive space nestled next to Spitalfields Market, quite near to some historic Jack the Ripper sights. This means that you are surrounded by a lot of people out to have a good time and spend some money. Walking in, I got the first sense that we might be in for a long night. Initially there was a nice sense of hurriedness in the kitchen and the floor staff were really hustling to get food to the tables. After a few minutes of watching this with no one coming to greet us, it got a little awkward. So we waited and eventually a server told us someone would get to us. It did not appear that there was a dedicated host and I noted about 4 waitstaff, a manager, and a expediter in chef whites all running food out to tables. In between, they often went into the kitchen to try to help put items together and even cleaning dishware at one point. It seemed like they were either people down or the kitchen was really deep in the weeds. I had a great view of the kitchen though and the dedicated cooks seemed to be keeping their cool. It was also very loud. I think it was because it was compact with maybe 50 people dining and the acoustics were terrible. As it got busier, it got so loud every time the servers would come to speak with us, we had to ask them to repeat several times because we simply could not hear them at normal speaking distances and volumes above the background din. I can overlook acoustics since some of that has to do with the old-age design charm of the building. Since it's really about the food, how was it? Good, old-school inventive (meaning it really does use some interesting cuts in a snout to tail kind of way) by dressing things up but salty. My table mates and I love salt and even we thought a few of the items crossed the line. It was great to order some things that one really can't find often such as chicken hearts and pork skin. But some of the fun was removed when the chicken hearts came out on once-crispy toast drowning in jus so it was just a soggy mess. Tasted good but was just a salty, gummy dish. We ate the hearts and left the toast. For my money, the star of the show was the lamb hearts with green sauce and mint. Perfectly seared rare, sliced thin and any gaminess was dealt with by the acidic, herbal sauce. That was a fantastic dish. Here comes the bad part: Our 4 starters and a bottle of wine came out quickly and we polished those off, and then the wait started. About 20 min in, we got 1 of the larger dishes (consider them to be more like mains) and another about 10 min later. About 60 min after that we had not received the other 2 and no one came to even check on us. Food was flying out to other tables and at one point, I did see a billow of smoke come out of an oven and wondered if it was our partridge burning and maybe in need of a do-over. We became so jet-lagged and tired of waiting that at about 75 minutes of waiting with no new food and no one checking on us, I asked them to simply cancel the rest and bring us the bill. The manager came over and told us that the partridge was already being done and would be out shortly and I got the sense that she was pleading with us to stay so we did. I felt bad and did not want them to have to waste a partridge or eat the cost. She asked me if there was anything she could do to make the situation right. I never suggest a discount under these circumstances because I feel bad doing that. I understand they are having a tough night but I wish she would have suggested it or simply just done it. Or done something, anything as a token of compensation. She knew we were not happy and she acknowledged that it was a delay on their end but she did not really make it right. After another 10-15 min, the partridge came out which was ok but forgettable and we canceled the sweetbreads since they had never shown up. They brought our check, charged us full bore, thanked us for coming in and let us leave which was disappointing because I will not make the effort to repeat. There are so many great spots to eat in London and this one seems like it used to be one of them but I'm not so sure any longer and since I don't get to London often, I'm not going to chance it. My disclaimer here is that I don't like to give harsh reviews and I have only been here once. This may have been a very off night for them and judging by most other reviews, that would seem to be the case so I hope this review is simply from the once in a million table that did not enjoy itself here on this particular evening.
The atmosphere and staff were pretty nice.
We were 4 people and we went there for lunch. They provided some "nose to tail eating" which was nice but the taste was pretty average. The sea bass was good though. Overall I was a bit disappointed by the not-so-impressive food. I felt it was a little overpriced and overrated as well.

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it? |

Working on your bid? |
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted. |
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from? |
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered? |
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.

Banned from Resy for selling reservations- Do we have a rat on our hands???
I am new to this app and started off by selling a polo bar reservation and then quickly sold one more reservation. Not long after I received emails from Resy saying all my reservations are cancelled and I am being banned from Resy for life. How could this have possibly happened without a rat telling Resy that I sold the reservation. I need some advice on this situation and let’s catch the rat!
Give the best answerBid and Buy Instantly
I have a big ongoing and it also shows someone is working on my bid. Today I see there is a " Buy Instantly " option at my portfolio showing same price I've bid for a reservation. I'm a bit confused, since my money has already been deducted from my credit card for the bid, do I need to pay one more time for the Buy Instantly? If I choose Buy Instantly, can I cancel my bid ( while someone is working on it )? Thanks!

You can only deposit $50 at a time until you earn the “Sales and Low Refund Medal” I believe. Im new to this as well but the ability to deposit more money at once and increase your amount of listings comes with that medal.

Anyone know how increase payout transfer to bank as I can only send $50 a day and they charge $5 for every transaction. There must be a way. I’ve contacted support two days ago and not a reply.

I have some reservations coming up tomorrow that have gotten lots of views but haven’t sold yet. I haven’t made a sale yet since I just joined this week. Just looking for a little reassurance. Thanks!
