I've been to Sqirl several times over the past six months.
The first time I went I had a great experience and decided to take my mom when she was visiting LA for the first time. Unfortunately, my first positive experience seemed to be a fluke. When I went to Sqirl the past few times the food was served lukewarm, and even cold one time. Additionally, their menu is very long and extensive but the rice dishes are rather bland. I had the crispy rice dish & added halloumi. Thank goodness I added halloumi because there would be no flavors otherwise. The prices of Sqirl are enormously high for the food they serve. Additionally, if you're dining with someone, don't expect your food to come out at the same time. If you're going to Sqirl then I'd recommend ordering any of their baked goods or homemade jams - that seems to be where their specialty is at. Their service is good and everyone is very nice.

We enjoyed the oat and seed granola with oat milk and the Yeuban. The Yeuban was outstanding especially considering it was meatless. The granola was flavorful and yummy. They have both indoor seating and outdoor. On the morning we went it was very busy and finding a table was challenging. Some of the employees were friendly, while others were not.

Came in on a Wednesday for brunch and had the best brunch ever. The raspberry pancakes, toast, sandwiches, literally everything we ordered was amazing. The service was great and it was pouring raining but luckily we were still able to find a place to sit. The drinks were subpar but the food made up for it. The bread was nice and chewy but crispy and the chicken tahini had so much good flavor and texture to it. The raspberry pancakes had a tasty sweet compote that complemented the savory pancakes so well. And the toast with the rainbow jam and ricotta was chefs kiss. The price point is honestly great comparatively to other sad pricey restaurants and the food came out fast. Would definitely recommend coming here if youre in the area its a worth while visit!

Overhyped and expensive! The wait was crazyyy - we waited about 15 min to order, 45 min to find a table, and another 15 min for our food to arrive. You have to find your own table and compete against others also trying to sit but it was disappointing to see one of the servers saving a table for a group that came much later than us. There are some tables inside but most are on the bumpy sidewalk so I was sitting at an angle the whole time! We had the Sorrel Pesto Rice, which was terrible and just tasted like I had a mouthful of lemon. The bacon was extra $ but was very hard and pretty cold like it was sitting out for a while. The Unicorn Ricotta Toast was actually pretty good though and all the different jams were interesting / exceptional. Overall, I was still hungry after for the high price I paid.

What a brunch spot!!!!! Sqirl is the CATS PJ'S!!! A true brunch spot with so many different delights. This was the first time eating here and I had such a hard time choosing what I was in the mood for. Everything looked spectacular and like it was the best choice. Delectable options. So many delicious treats! We had the crispy rice salad (the works + disco) a kiwi hamantaschen, brioche toast with multi jams, and a side of eggs! We drank drip coffee, and the turmeric juice. Soooo delicious and refreshing! I will always get the turmeric juice!!Every single member of the waitstaff had a smile on their face & took pride in working at this restaurant. Atmosphere is very open, outside air and also diner vibes. Very welcoming - tables on the street. Kind people everywhere eating pastries & brunch delights. This place is a hidden gem. So excited to go back in the future. Sqirl is the jam!!!!

Sqirl is a spot for sure, located on Virgil it's serving up some of the best breakfast/lunch in the immediate area. They have a pretty big selection of food options, mostly grain bowls, pastries, & bread based meals. I've come before for breakfast sandwich and it's a little pricey but you can tell it's made with quality ingredients. The chai latte is also pretty good. I tried the shakshuka for the first time and wow it was so f***ing good. It was also served with the longest piece of toast I've ever seen. The garlicky yogurt sauce inside was amazing, with olives & fresh herbs easily some of the best shakshuka I've ever hadThe food is very filling, portions are large, so come hungry & share! The ricotta toast was honestly just ok, it's kind of expensive but it is also huge. We got the rainbow with 3 jams but I preferred the strawberry over the other two by far.

Oh wow this place was 10/10!The rainbow ricotta toast was to die for and their iced Americano was delicious. My friend got the vegan latke tot which had pickled veggies on top & a ginger lemonade. Next time I am going to order what he got!The place was packed but we managed to find counter space to sit at. If it wasn't so cold, I definitely would have sat outside. They had counter service! Neighborhood and metered parking only
Be the first to ReplyMy overall experience at Sqirl has been good but lately
My overall experience at Sqirl has been good but lately I've been having some bad experiences with the food and customer service. Last weekend my friend was visiting so I wanted to introduce him to Sqirl. Got the French toast and hash. We order on toast and go to pick up the food. The food was ready but the coffees weren't (cold brews) the coffee took about 20 mins to make. Everyone seemed to be out of it and working really slow like they didn't want to be there. We went home and realized that none of the sauce or French toast condiments were provided. The food was cold and everything tasted mediocre.Today, me and my partner ordered from toast again. I called and asked if she could take my gift card.. tells me no and that I'd have to come in person to use it. Fast forward -- we go to pick up the food and the same person who picked up. She seemed to be having a conversation with her coworkers and all I wanted to pick up my food. She was unbothered to help and continued talking to her coworker. I had to wait about 10 minutes for me to get help. The hash was cold and salty. My partners meal was okay. Overall, I enjoy coming to Sqirl but it seems to be having more hit and miss days rather than keeping me impressed. Especially the prices they are charging, it sets the bar pretty high.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was tasty, but pricey.
We had the veggie omelette and the buckwheat pancakes. You need to love fennel and dill to enjoy that omelette, which I do, but it was even a little bit much for me. The buckwheat was strong, but had a taste that grew on you. The people are very nice and it is fun to go next-door and see them working in the bakery.

Ricotta toast was so tasty with unicorn style jam on top of it. It's toasty and also soft inside. I also got the daily quiche, mine was broccoli and spinach for the day and it was very delicious. I would love to come back for another brunch!

I've gone back to Sqirl after my initial visit and offered another sandwich to try. I got something off their regular line-up the Morty and I liked it so much I went back for third visit. Each time I got the mango lassi and I wasn't disappointed in it. My second time I got the skillet special with a biscuit. The biscuit was like a biscuit/croissant mash up-flaky but still hardy enough to help me mop up all the tasty goodness left in the skillet.Definitely glad I took them up on their offer and came back.
Be the first to ReplyGet the When Harry Met Sally, that's all you need to know.
The store next door is great to as a neighborhood shop. Can be slow though. I definitely recommend ordering online and just picking up.
Be the first to ReplyThis place has been poppin since I've been introduced to it
This place has been poppin since I've been introduced to it last year, not a shock once I've actually tried the food. Just as a tip, there is inside and outside seating but the outside tends to get filled up very quickly, so get there in a timely manner! I always recommend the Woodstock Sandwich or the Jamón Pepin Sandwich, both are fantastic for any time of day. If you have a sweet tooth, probably try their French brioche jam toast! I don't like the taste of the creme cheese they put, so I ask for jam or plain with syrup on the side. Def a way to go! For drinks I alwaysssss get their iced matcha latte with oat milk! To be completely honest with you, I've had matcha from so many coffee shops and big places like Starbucks. But this match they have is one of my favorites! I'll be including pictures of the foods I've collected from last year and this year. My family, bf and friends love coming here. It's the best!! Big thanks to the cooks and employees that keep the tables clean, they're keeping this place going! We see you

Be the first to ReplyDon't understand the hype.
Took 45 minutes to get 2 bowls of rice and 1 very small bowl of chicken salad. The food was really mediocre - just really not tasty but the prices were high.

The quality of this place is just questionable (remember the infamous jam mold??). But I get nostalgic and for those who've had Sqirl in its heyday circa 2012, you'll remember how innovative, fresh and new each of their dishes were. Well, I get nostalgic of those days and sometimes order for old time's sake.In May 2022, ordered ricotta toast and 2 sorrel pesto rice bowls. While eating, found long white strands of "hair" EVERYWHERE in the rice, to the point that it was revolting in both of our bowls. I called Sqirl and had to submit my videos of picking out these white hairs from the rice. They told me they would investigate but didn't hear back from them. I had to follow up and ask because I needed to know what I had just consumed... After following up, they told me that it was "fiber from Kale" and that they were sorry and replacing the bad batch of rice. I don't know how they make the pesto rice and why fibers from kale were inside the rice, but it turned me off so badly. And isn't it pesto rice? Not kale rice? Fiber is only on the stems of some species of kale, so did they grind the stem? Are they washing the kale??? I still have so many questions...Getting my money refunded was a whole another headache. In the end, the experience which still bothers me enough to write about it 2 months later, is a good reminder that Sqirl just isn't the same.
Be the first to ReplyNot for the LA natives.
I'm not trying to diss but this was not for us. How can bacon taste like literally nothing. The horchata was just white colored water with cinnamon. I guess it's good for the LA transplants IFYKYKLA rating 1/10

Was very excited to try this place, because every time I passed by there was always a long line of people wishing. However it was quite disappointing. The drinks were quite pricey and the coffee and chai latte were very water-downed.The Long-Cooked Chicken & Rice Porridge tasted quite salty, and the tomato was very overwhelming and it was the only thing I could taste. I did quite enjoy the Crispy Rice Salad, except the sausage part of it tasted very gamey. If you do plan to come, come before 10:30AM on weekend sor else there will be quite a long wait.

I came here with my fiancé for the first time in 2016 and had the sorrel pesto rice bowl. We sat next to a friendly stranger who designed his own motorbikes and randomly showed us risqué pictures of his Croatian girlfriend and his sultry bikes. The food was delicious. Six years later, the now husband and I ventured to Sqirl again. It looks like it expanded a bit. There is outdoor patio-like seating and two sides - a larger kitchen and a retail area. The food is just as good, if not better than it was in 2016. I ordered the same sorrel bowl but this time, it came with a gang of kale which really worked with the bowl. We also had their ricotta toast which was delicious. The jams were really good but some bites of the ricotta were a bit salty. The husband got the buckwheat pancakes which were surprisingly delicious - nothing like the ones my momma used to make.

The kids came home for Thanksgiving and was looking for breakfast the morning after. Sqirl seemed like one of the most popular places around LA. We decided to get takeout in case there was too much of a crowd there. We arrived around quarter til 10 and there were only a small handful of customers there. Perhaps everyone was still in line down the street at Courage Bagel. The menu and the vibe seemed like this would fit in perfectly in Berkeley: a bit nature-loving and super health conscious. LOLThe popular Ricotta Toast was a large slice of brioche with jam. The brioche was a bit on the dry side. The Sorrel Rice was just not my cup of tea; but, my daughter seemed to like it. The Islander sandwich, served with a sausage patty, was decent; but, I wouldn't drive across town for it. The salmon rillette was slightly smoky in a piece of rustic bread was pretty tasty. The small slice of ricotta cake was moist and quite good. Perhaps the most flavorful dish was the hash. This would be the dish I'd order again.

I have been meaning to try Sqirl for a while now, and I was really pleased that I had the opportunity yesterday! The tahini chicken salad was delicious and tender, I really liked that there wasn't any mayo and it was really flavorful. I hope to go back next week!

TL;DR - known for their porridges, thick brioche toast and cafe drinks. Minimal, hip, casual restaurant with bright flavors and novel dishes.Brioche Toast w Ricotta/Jams - big fluffy toast. Mildly salty and creamy ricotta. Sqirl made jams with a freshness and flavor like wow.Silky eggs - crème fraiche inside a fluffy rolled omelette. Tart, smooth, silky, and not too saltyShroom top - hojicha latte with a chaga mushroom top. Smooth, flavorful, lightly sweet, very tea forward with milk.New School - eggs were solid, ham was a little dry and unmemorable, toast very tasty.Came on a Sunday around 8:30-9:00 AM and no lines present at all. Outdoor seating along the sidewalk.
