Perfect date night with my hubby to celebrate his
Perfect date night with my hubby to celebrate his promotion! The food was delicious over all five courses and the service was perfect, from the host to our server to all of the generous chefs at the chef's table. The prix fixe is a great deal at $90, especially as you can choose one course from every menu section with no restrictions. Menu highlights for us: octopus, mushroom pasta, wagyu beef, and for dessert we split the pannetone dessert with the hot and cold chocolate which was a very tasty combo. For the last dinner course, I might not recommend the pork - it was a bit salty with the bacon wrap and my hubs wagyu beef was much tastier. What really stood out was the service, however - from the little freebies of champagne, wine, and pasta to the overall positive and friendly vibes from our servers and the chefs. Thank you to the whole team for a very lovely evening out!

been here second weekend on a roll - super friendly service and great quality food; my party of two feel very much welcomed and valued and regained the joy of dining out again

Quality Italian food for good prices - the a la carte menu is great. Ambiance is good as well and good service. Not going to blow you away with food but overall good.

My husband and I came here for date night last week and absolutely loved it. The food, ambience, and service was simply outstanding. Highly recommend the chicken liver appetizer, lasagne, and wagyu dishes. The chocolate selection plate for dessert was divine. 5 stars.

4.5 stars. SPQR dinner tonight! It was delicious! been years since I've been here. They blended a wine for me on the spot to my taste (Italian varietal of Cab Franc + 2 other wines to get a complexity, low tannins, dry with a little sweetness... no tobacco or char)! Thank you SpQR Sommelier! Had 2 antipasti: octopus Brussels and Broccoli Hen of Woods Panchetta. Both absolutely delicious! Not a crumb left on plates. Broccoli leaves as well as the Brussels were airy, savory, and crispy! Squid ink spaghetti with octopus puttanesca and bottarga was rave worthy as well! Nothing left on that plate either. The bacon wrapped pork was juicy and tender and full of flavor for not being brined. Need to go back more often now that tables are easier to get when you show up at 5:30. Almost forgot about the compliments of chef dessert bites... mini chocolate chip cookies from those sister bake shop around the corner (soft and delicious), and these little cinnamon sugar beignets!!!!! Hot off the fryer!!!! SPQR it if you're in SF. They are super friendly and chat with you if you are chatty like me. And they take your coat as you walk in. The special mushroom mushroom mushroom pasta fell flat because the pasta when it's pinched up and sealed as a sail/ fin was undercooked. Everything else was devoured. Seating is tight squeeze. Lighting could do with a revamp to enhance food colors to tantalize better (the bite before the bite). Perhaps usb bronze table lamps so lighting is above the food and below the eyes?
Be the first to ReplyThis is a review for their weekend donuts.
I've walked by here a bunch of times and noticed a line of folks ordering their fresh made donuts/beignets and we finally gave it a try. They have multiple flavors: powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar, mushroom, apple cider, and maybe another one that I can't remember. Each order is $7 and comes with 3-4 in an order. We went with the powdered sugar and mushroom. The powdered was delicious, especially hot n fresh. Would order again. The mushroom one was supposed to be savory, but the filling inside was just too sweet for my liking. I ate one, and ended up giving away the rest. . I do wish they offered a sampler option, so I can try em all without having to make individual orders. $16 for two orders, While good, it's not something I'm gonna crave all that often
Be the first to ReplyWonderful ambiance with great service.
...menu is a bit wonky, especially if you are doing prix fixe. There are an inconsistent number of dishes in each category...there is a good selection of antipasto options...lots of primi, which is largely pasta, risotto, etc. options...but there are only three secondi choices which are limited to a stuffed chicken breast, scallops or roast beef. While several dishes were really fabulous, several others were pretty pedestrian for this price point.....you kind of have to know whats really good going in, and thats not always possible. This is a very good place if you know the menu well.

Perhaps it's a bit unfair that Italian isn't quite high on my list of favorite cuisines, but SPQR did little to change that. That being said though, the food here is quite solid if you're really into Italian, but given my biases, I simply wouldn't go out of my way for it again. However, the ravioli and desserts were pretty good honestly. Service was quite good, no complaints here. Good table to chair height ratio, nice seating options, pretty dining room, good for dates.
Be the first to ReplyDinner at SPQR is an incredibly special experience.
My family doesn't live in SF, but we travel there often for good food and good times. We try to plan scheduled events around someone's restaurant pick and with a concert at the Fillmore, my dad chose the perfect spot a block or so away. We made reservations around 3 months out (FYI) and chose the $88 4-course menu, which seemed like the more valued option than a la carte ~ plus, we were able to try more menu options from everyone's plate! This spot is small and cozy, but made for an equally intimate tasting evening. Every item on the menu was so unique, full of flavor & if I could sum it up in two words: Innovative Italian. Like a foodie dream straight from pillow to plate, to highlight a few of our tasting offerings: warm focaccia the size of your fist to start with creamy whipped butter, salad with a mulled red wine vinaigrette perfect for anyone's Fall/Winter fix, grilled octopus over a bed of pistachio cream with brussels sprouts, bucatini pasta served with crispy kale, sage brown butter, walnuts and blue cheese, larger than life raviolis served with delicate pieces of squash & topped with seed-nut crumbles, and buttery sea scallops that swam in a chili-yuzu foam! (Say what!?) Highly recommend chatting with the well~trained servers to describe the dishes and flavors you're tasting. Also, ask recommendation wise of what to wash each course down with! SPQR is beer/wine only, but the wine list is extensive. And for dessert, the hot chocolate torta was something alone I would go back for. But quite honestly, this menu was nothing short of liquid (or chocolate) gold! It's no surprise they have a long list of awards and accolades, Michelin stars and even a pretty sweet cookbook you can find online. Outside of their tasting menu, they also offer coffee & donuts on weekends and fried chicken on Sundays. Either would be fun for the next stroll in the city! Bravo, SPQR!
Be the first to ReplyGracious service, amazing and soulful prepared food.
The wine pairing with tasting menu were a wonderful experience
Be the first to ReplyTight space with no temperature control to keep diners
Tight space with no temperature control to keep diners comfortable (we were seated at the front right next to the door and it was freezing every time they opened it), and just an overall not enjoyable atmosphere. I expect a little bit more, and the restaurant did not meet my expectations. Antipasti dishes were fine, but nothing memorable. We ordered the risotto and semolina gnocchi from the Primi menu: so mealy and salty. I felt like I was eating food put through a blender and then seasoned for an old person who has chewing issues. The servers were quite unemotional and unpleasant, as well. All good was for a neighborhood joint, but simply undeserving of a star. I should have gone to one of the other Italian establishments in the area instead.
Be the first to ReplySPQR is consistent-- consistently bad.
What started off as strong and friendly waitstaff, ended up cold and unwelcome. The food was mediocre at best, with main entrees being over cooked. It took 4 hours to get through the dinner, felt totally neglected by the staff. Do not go here if you value your time and money.
Be the first to ReplySPQR was good, not great.
I'm glad I tried it once but probably won't go back again. It is good for a date night or something but very quiet and lowkey vibes and not as cozy even as I would have hoped. The food was above average, but only a few of the dishes were special. Service was okay. Everyone was nice, but again for the price I can't say it's worth it.

Thank you to chef Matthew and his wonderful staff for making my Galentine's dinner with my dear friend so wonderful! I've been wanting to try SPQR's menu for a while now. It's one of the more affordable pre fixe menus that has a Michelin star in the city. The interior is very cozy and modern. We sat at the bar which was really beautiful but there are also tables and some outdoor seating. The menu is a generous 5 courses but feels more than that with the extra dishes they serve. There are several options for a few of the courses so my friend and I were able to try multiple dishes which I recommend doing. Stand outs for me were the Waygu, salad and of course dessert! The wine pairings with the dessert were also so delicious. Such a great place for a lovely dinner or special occasion!
Be the first to ReplyIt has been over 9 years for fate to bring me back here.
Many things have changed. Gone with the a la carte menu and in with the fixed course menu. With the change in menu, it seemed to me that the restaurant is much quieter than before. To me the highlight of the night was the buckwheat fusilli. Something about the aroma of the cider as the plate lands in front of you just really works up your appetite. The Berkshire pork is another one that caught my attention. The slice of pork belly, soft yet crunchy at the same time. A great play on textures. I am usually not one to eat octopus, but the technique needed for the octopus appetizer must have been passed down by Ceres himself. Tender, flavorful. The insalata di carota, one of the fruits incorporated into this dish is kumquat. Something not seen too often in western cuisine. A nice contrast to everything else on the plate.Unfortunately the American wagu beef with foie gras sauce was my least favorite. Visually the presentation is not particularly appetizing. Which in itself could be forgiven. But the foie gras sauce was too salty and the overall flavor profile just seemed very one note. My date also came to the same conclusion. Service was great. Every request was promptly taken care of. Overall a good value. Even on a Centurion's salary.
Be the first to ReplyI'm not quite sure why this place has any word of mouth
I'm not quite sure why this place has any word of mouth hype, because the quality of the food and service does not warrant it. Just like the Roman Empire, of which this restaurant is aptly named, it seems to have fallen. The gnocchi lacked flavor and was overpowering with potato. The salmon was well cooked but not at all in line with the supposed Roman theme. The service was bizarre to say the least. The waiter took away my glass of wine without explanation. The waitstaff was constantly removing dishes before we finished, and even getting the bread others were offered seemed to be an effort on an empty Sunday night. Avoid if you value good food and service
Be the first to ReplyEasily in my top 5 best meals I've ever eaten.
Came as part of a Christmas present trip to SF with my husband. We've been ti Michelin star restaurants before (one of the reasons to try this place) and one thing that makes this amazing is the passion you get from the chefs for what they are doing. We each picked different dishes from the tasting menu to try all different things, and husband got the wine pairing while I got just a glass of white wine (I'm not a huge wine drinker). While eating our amazing dishes, I watched as Chef Matt was carving up prosciutto from the bone and I couldn't help but take a picture since it looked amazing. I remarked to my husband how amazing it looked and how much I love a good prosciutto. Chef must've overheard because all of a sudden he brings over a plate with a couple of pieces for us to taste. OMG I am forever ruined for mediocre prosciutto. As I'm raving over the quality, Chef drops off a few more pieces. Later as our meal progresses, one of the hosts comes over to ask if I drink alcohol, because Chef Matt wanted to offer a glass of wine to go with my course. Amazing wine, perfect pairing. He then comes over to ask our drinks of choice and our overall feelings of the meal, then tells us the story of how this prosciutto is part of a batch he cured for 4 years and how it was the last of the batch. It's moments like this, where you see the passion and the overall care they have in what they do and what they create that really make a meal. And the food was great as well. I would absolutely come again and will probably make this one of our go-to places anytime we are in SF for a nice meal

First time visitor, came here on Christmas Eve to experience the "Feast of the Seven Fishes" which is only available once per year. 9 courses which was nicely varied and included two desserts. I'm now a fan and need to come back to see what they serve nightly.
Be the first to Replywe had a great tasting experience at SPQR.
every course on the menu was made to perfection. would definitely come back again.
Be the first to ReplyI hadn't been here in a a few years and was excited to try
I hadn't been here in a a few years and was excited to try it again as I had fond memories. Sadly it wasn't the same for me. The transition to a pre fixed menu didn't work out for me. I found the small plates to be a bit more experimental in terms of pushing flavor envelopes instead of the traditional Italian food I remember. Still delicious but not what I was looking for.
Be the first to ReplyI was curious to find out what all the fuss was about.
After hearing that Accarrino's donuts and coffee were being served at SPQR on the weekends, I made up my mind to find out what all the fuss was about. I grabbed a mocha to go along with it and ordered all four types of the ice cream. Although each of the four flavors was delicious.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place.
Great food. Super busy. If you are visiting from out of town the internet and Yelp will tell you it's closed until 5pm. This is normally a dinner spot which opens at 5pm. However they open super early takeout orders.

Donuts and coffee? Let's take a break this weekend!-- -- -- Recently found out that there was Accarrino's donuts and coffee being served at SPQR on the weekends and I decided to check what all the buzz was about. I ordered all four flavors and got a mocha to go along with it. All four flavors were good, but I'd say my favorite was peach lemon verbena. Each flavor cost $7, and you get 3 to 5 donuts depending on the flavor. During the time I was waiting for my order to be ready, I can tell the locals love it since the lady taking orders seemed to know their names. It's great to see this little donut and coffee treat on the weekend getting the love it deserves. This is only on the weekends, and it runs from 9 am to 2 pm or until sold out. Even though the restaurant hours says closed until 11 or 11:30 am, this runs before and overlaps with the restaurant when it opens. Seems as though it tends to get busier after 10 am, since after I ordered a bunch more people started to line up. So be sure to get there early or order ahead.-- -- --pictured:Powdered SugarCinnamon SugarPeach Lemon VerbenaSavory Mushroom

I came for the beignets on a saturday and they were really good and reasonably priced! I recommend the rose strawberry one and the coffee with vanilla creamer. the staff made a mistake with our order but quickly corrected it despite the busy morning and was really nice!
