Very good meal
Very good meal. The food and drinks were exceptional. The restaurant was beautiful and everything was perfect. The team went above and beyond.

The food is spectacular. Got the tasting menu with wine pairing. The squid, cod and wagyu beef were fantastic. The food is beautiful and well presented. Overall great experience. Would highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyAnother flawless restaurant since Sepia
The last flawless restaurant I visited like this one was Sepia which has sadly closed. Frankly, when I stepped foot into the restaurant, I was taken aback by the plain decor and setting. But then, the attention to detail of the whole evening experience did win me over completely in the end. Three snack dishes, three seafood dishes, one meat dish and two desserts each exhibiting delicate balance of flavours and cooking skills. Two sour dough bread was a bit of left field design and struck accord. I was so engaged with the experience that I forgot my standard end of meal ritual - the coffee.

This is an expensive, fixed-course restaurant. For the money, the customer is entitled to expect food that will sit up and make a statement, show flair and originality. Slabs of fish and meat just don't do that. While the quality of the ingredients was excellent, the dishes themselves often let the ingredients down. Japanese 'influences' are the current fashion in 'fine dining'. All very well if you have a well-grounded understanding of how these ingredients and touches operate to enhance flavours in Japanese cooking, otherwise you end up with an 'Hawaiian pizza' effect. The staff, while plentiful and attentive, were also forgetful (drinks ordered and not delivered) and rather cool in their manner (especially the females). Standing in a noisy room and muttering a list of ingredients, showing little concern for whether the customer is able to absorb the information, is second-rate. Greatly disappointed.

We came to Sixpenny on Thursday night for dinner. The meal was superb, and I would argue the best that I have ever tasted, and that includes Michelin rated restaurants and some of the best of London and Paris. Why do I say this? 1. The exceptional freshness of the various dishes. 2. The intensity of flavours. 3. The elegance of the components for each dish; not so many components as to overwhelm and a perfect marriage of ingredients which allowed for both the individual ingredient to shine while contributing to the synchronous result. 4. The elegant presentation of each dish. So many restaurants miss the mark by trying too hard to impress and fall into pretension. Sixpenny is simply elegant. The Spring Pea Tart with Whipped Goats Curd must take the prize for its stand-out burst of flavour and freshness. The Roasted Barley Koji Ice cream with Pear and Marsala was simply sensational. Thank you.
Be the first to ReplyUnforgettable experience at a three-hatted restaurant in Sydney
Our first three-hatted dining experience here in Sydney, absolutely top-class food and service, also the portion is bigger than most fine-dining in Sydney, doesn’t feel like we spent 4 hours at the restaurant! Hope we can come back again, can’t wait!
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best in Sydney
Sixpenny is one of the best fine dining restaurants in Sydney for the finer taste. Although the venue is not big and looks already quite dated, but the service was superb although all tables were full. Most importantly the 6 courses of food served on the table tasted very good and finely seasoned. The presentation was not overly done like several other overrated venues with more emphasised on too much of gimmicky presentation but not tasting fine enough.

The service is amazing and the food exceptional. I extremely nice touch having the chefs explain each dish. Great wine selection and the bread is next level. One little disappointment is that to charge a credit card surcharge on top of an expensive meal I think should be able to be absorbed as part of the price.

As part of a group of six I offered to enquire on a couple of matters with a view to making a booking . There was no person to answer my call but I was invited to leave a message which I did.I requested a call back & like so many businesses today,I heard nothing. Reported back to my friends who like me see this as poor business management apart from a lack of courtesy. We are off to Aria where our booking was taken in a professional manner as expected.

Attention to detail in service, preparation and service right down to synchronised plate laying on tables. Great theatre! We had the paired wine tasting menu. Amazing food-delicate,punchy and ingenious flavours combined to delight and entice the taste buds. We said delicious many times! Two guests per staff member to ensure that the overall experience is prestigious and attentive. Save your pennies for fabulous dining experience! Decadent and moorish! Well worth it!

Terrific restaurant, incredible attention to putting together flavours and textures, very professional yet friendly and comfortable setting and service, really top class. Certainly not cheap and only a tasting menu on offer but a really wonderful experience from start to finish. One of our best Sydney meals.
Be the first to ReplyVery nice…just a few suggestions…
We had a lovely night. Food was beautiful no complaints at all. Service was spot on as well. Just a few points for consideration. There was only one alcoholic cocktail on the menu. All other restaurants of this caliber have had multiple to choose from.
My second observation was they did not have coffee options such as cappuccino or macchiato which would of been great to have with the desserts.
Otherwise very nice. I would recommend.
Creative dishes with lots of flavour and texture that certainly tested the taste buds. Expensive, particularly drinks.
We were a group of six who enjoyed the degustation menu which comprised 11 courses in all plus bread at $195 per person. The 11 courses included four bite sized starters (smoked eel croissant, pecorino doughnut, eggplant and yoghurt tart and Pai tea with Tuna), three entrees (Red emperor, kangaroo tartare and Spencer Gulf squid), two mains (Spanish Mackerel and Borrowdale pork loin) and two desserts (Mead vinegar custard with raspberry and strawberry and goat's milk yoghurt parfait with rhubarb).
Most of the dishes were thoroughly enjoyed by all and appreciated for their creativeness. There were though a couple of misses across the group.
Wine and drinks menu was extensive and expensive. Negroni's for instance were $23 each and there were substantially more bottles of wine over $100 and substantially above this amount than there were below $100. The wine list included bottles sourced locally as well as from France and Italy amongst others.
Service was quite formal although the explanations of some of the dishes were missed as some waiters raced through them.
Pleased that we came again, our last visit with the same people was a few years prior, but at over $540 per couple before a tip we will not be rushing back.
one of the best in Sydney!
creative and unique dishes.
interesting wine list.
cozy and comfortable setting.
professional yet friendly service.
An anjoyable dinner for sure.
Highly recommended!
RIDICULOUS
Lots of long form reviews here so I’ll be brief. A... Mazing. Truly!
There for dinner on a Saturday night for a significant birthday - was magical. Not a bum note (apart from a few broken glasses which can happen anywhere).
Ambiance, food, service... spot on. A memorable evening indeed. This is a Sydney gem! THANK YOU.
Superb wine pairings and oddly sea and forest food pairings that knocked it out of the ballpark.
Absolutely wonderful. I’m a coeliac and the standard of food was wonderful. I also by choice don’t eat red meat, squid, oysters, but will always at least try if offered in a degustation. I’m so glad I did, the kangaroo tartare tasted delicious however the knockout dish for me was the oddly paired squid and mushroom that was just divine. It’s a testament to their skill if they can get a failed wannabe vegetarian to eat kangaroo and squid.
We opted for the wine pairing and were not disappointed and discovered a lovely wine from Bathurst of all places.
Superb. Go. Enjoy.
‘The best'? Enjoyment of food always depends on place, time, company...
But sixpenny Stanmore is certainly my main contender for that superlative. Perhaps the best meal I’ve ever had.
And one reason was that it was the food that did it. It wasn’t the setting, the decor or even the service (all of which were excellent). The food.
The cruller and kombu tart were a great start, but things generally got better and better...
Kangaroo tartare? Sensational. Slightly gamey, spicey, gorgeous. The dried cheese thingy on top was, perhaps, superfluous, but perhaps added a salty edge to the ‘roo.
The absolute, unbelievable, standout for me was the sea bass with sour beer and lemon Myrtle (I'm sure he said sea bass, rather than dory, as is listed on the menu). Just an unbelievable combination of flavours which shouldn’t really work, but does on such a level as to make the dish something beyond anything I’ve ever tasted before. Taste is, of course, entirely subjective, but this was the best dish I’ve ever tasted. And I don’t like fish much.
Everything else, including desserts, was superb.
Another thing worth its own paragraph is the wine matching, which was, apart from one miss, sensational. And let’s face it, the miss was just me.
Go. Enjoy.
Incredible
Restaurant Sixpenny, we learn is named after the sixpence restaurants that operated in the late 1800s in Australia. Generally these were 5 or six courses with pastry for six pence. Now, be sure to save your pennies to dine here, for it costs a fair tad more than that today. Your seven course degustation will set you back $175 pp. Despite its high cost, it is one worth saving for a special occasion and it is one of a few restaurants awarded the prestigious 3 hats in Good Food guide to back it up.
Located in Stanmore in part residential area the top end of the shops, it’s a quaint little property in an historic house from 1907. The Restauran is well sectioned off well to provide an intimate feel. They are also following the COVIDSafe practices and we are required to use a QR code to scan in and view the menu.
From start to finish, the service was impeccable, very attentive and not at all pretentious. A nice touch with the Chef’s presenting each of the seven dishes to the table explaing what each entails. The sommelier also did a good job of recommending wine to our liking.
The menu at Sixpenny has a modern Australian vibe to it, paying homage to Australian proteins, produce and flavours. They like to use local suppliers, growers and producers from around Australia.
The meal begins with two snacks; a Crueller with mascarpone/ like a small donut with the consistency of a churro.
This was accompanied by the Kombu tart with smoked eggplant, a delicately constructed disc, the pastry nice a crisp and disappearing in a single bite.
The bread at Sixpenny was very impressive. They served two types, white sourdough and the second (served later in the degustation) is twice baked using leftover bread mixed with coffee grinds from the aeropress and maple syrup. They come warm, fluffy centres, crispy crusts and served with a mascarpone butter. Honestly the best bread we’ve had!
The first dish of the seven courses was the cured bonito with cucumber and citrus pepper. A lovely fresh dish, which we have heard that bonito is great served raw and this dish cetainly proved this to be correct. The flavours of this dish had us salivating and cleansed the palate in preparation for what was to follow.
Their incredible Kangaroo Tartare came topped with a thin sweet potato cracker and dried cheese. We love a good Tartare and this certainly hit the mark, beatifully seasoned and the cheese on the super crisp top provided a nice smooth addition in what is a wonderful, textural flavour concept.
The Spencer’s gulf squid with mushrooms and smoked squid broth is a very pretty dish. The squid is so delicately prepared, cut to look like flowers and were melt in your mouth, the broth carried well with the squid and we loved the earthy, smokey umami flavours.
The Grouper in a liquid of Sour beer and lemon Myrtle was a favourite, the flakey fish caramelised on the outside, and super tender within. The sour beer and lemon myrtle foam was the perfect flavour to combine with the fish and we savoued every bite.
The final savoury dish consisted of three slices of borrowdale pork loin with malted barley and confit garlic. Topped with a piece of crispy kale that looked like a flower. The pork was succulent, and the glossy sauce had incredible flavour and silky texture.
This brings us to their desserts, the first of which was a Dorset, a mead vinegar custard topped with frozen raspberries & strawberry consommé. You’re met with the natural sweetness of honey, balanced by the acidity of the frozen fruit.
Then came the Poached quince served atop a goats milk and Swiss meringue super creamy texture and the acidity of the quince a nice contrast.
Whilst both desserts were lovely, we do find the combination of two creamy desserts to be an interesting choice. We’d personally like something with different textures or flavours, like a cake or chocolate option. However, the meal finished with some amazing Madelines which was a nice touch.
We decided to finish off with a coffee. They don’t have a coffee machine but there’s aeropress available at a cost of $8 a cup!
The coffee came with mini cookies in a ceramic cookie jar, very Australiana and the cookies were a house made monte carlo, chocolate and chocolate chip.
We really enjoyed our experience at Sixpenny. In particular we love that they championed Australian ingredients and the touches of quirky Australiana, through the use Australian artists in their ceramics and interiors. Overall, a great experience and well suited to a special occasion.
Perfect Birthday Experience
Restaurants such as Sixpenny are not simply “dinner”, we consider them an experience. These experiences are a hobby and this one did not disappoint. Perfectly matched wines to delightful culinary creations. From natural Sydney rock oysters with house made blackberry vinaigrette to squid with peas and beef with a jus to die for. Lets not forget dessert!! Your at the point where you can eat no more but just can’t leave it - well that’s Sixpenny. Always go for the paired wines for the holistic experience.

Degustation menu with 7 courses plus starters and optional oysters (do yourself a favour and have a couple). We selected our own wine rather than matching wines. Easy to park around the corner, lovely interior with good room between tables. Service spot on. Food the highlight and thoroughly enjoyed every course. Wine beautiful. Not cheap but worth every cent. Usually I don’t agree with SMH choices of 3 hatted restaurants but this is an exception.
