Sushi by chef Miki was phenomenal.
Everything was so tasty and delicious. My only complaint here was around the service. While Miki was very friendly, I expected more in terms of the waitstaff for the amount we're paying. I had to ask the waitress to refill my tea multiple times (she didn't check in on me) amongst other requests because she was emerged in flirtatious conversation the whole night with the gentleman at the end who was clearly a regular. Totally get that you have to cater to special clientele, but for $200/pp I don't think I should have to remind you of my requests, especially when there are just seven people at the bar total.

Delicious, creative fresh and most of all FUN night at Shunji Chef Shunji and his wife want people to relax, talk and have a good time! They are amazing genuinely loving people. It can be intimidating to dine at these experiences but Chef has a lovely friendly smile on his face. With only 6 seats per room in two rooms we chose Chef SHUNJI But next door David Chang & wife were dining with Chef Miki - too cool! Michelin star for good reason Will be back LOVED it! Street parking at meter was easy to find
Be the first to ReplyReally terrific all around - service, food, ambiance etc.
Highly recommended and we will certainly be back!

One Michelin star Shunji (1) Shunji has two rooms, chef shunji room and chef miki room. Of course I have to try shunji room first! I felt that the chef was having a good time all night, and he chatted with us from time to time, which was still very happy. According to the order of serving, the appetizers are all light, the seasonal vegetable salad, the sashimi with dashi jelly are very delicious, and the sesame seeds are very good and fragrant. Then came the pickled Atlantic Bonito, which is said to be a very seasonal food that looks like garlic moss. The Manju is so delicious, it feels like mashed taro and radish, with a glutinous texture but a refreshing taste. Then the sushi started! They use red vinegar for their sushi. I can't remember the fish clearly, probably sea bass, goldeneye sea bream, and isaki first. They are all relatively refreshing fish.

Delicious omakase experience! Very fresh and great quality fish. A lot of appetizers mixed in like soup and hot dishes. Great wine and sake selection. There are 6 seats in this room which make it a very personal experience. Chef shunji was very accommodating and friendly. Good price point if you don't go crazy on alcohol ;)

The appetizers are all light, seasonal vegetable salad, sashimi with dashi jelly are very delicious, and the sesame seeds are very good and fragrant. Then came the pickled Atlantic Bonito, which was served with something that looked like garlic moss and was said to be very seasonal. The roots were also deep-fried. I didn't like this very much because I don't like anything related to garlic. Manju is delicious. It feels like mashed taro and radish. It has a glutinous texture but is refreshing. Then the sushi started! They use red vinegar for their sushi. I can't remember the fish clearly, probably sea bass, golden eye sea bream, isaki first, and I don't know the remaining two. This is the first part, they are all refreshing fish.

Overall this omakase was a good experience, but being in LA, there is definitely a ton of competition. Super fresh fish with a modern and intimate ambiance as expected. Some highlights from the meal: + Chef Miki was super sweet and our waitress was also very on top of it! + The best sake recommendations + Unique non-sushi/sashimi dishes

I ate at Shunji several years ago when they still had a Michelin star, but I believe the food is likely still worth trying for a special occasion. I recall them giving generous portions and many different courses both hot and cold. The cuts of fish were perfectly portioned. Two-thirds of the way through, the chef wisely asked if I'd like less rice per sushi otherwise I'd be too stuffed to go on. Very good service and ambiance befitting of a high end omakase restaurant.

Host was very unpleasant when one in my party was unable to attend due to a trip to the ER earlier in the day for the reservation. Most of the sushi was average at best and two pieces of sushi actually tasted bad. No way this should be a Michelin star restaurant.

awful, not great tasting and the chew-toro was more grisly than an all you can eat sushi buffet. I had to walk to the restroom to spit out the gristle..... Avoid it at all-to-much -cost. better places to go!

It used to be located on Pico Blvd in West LA, but recently have moved to Ocean Park Blvd in Santa Monica. They now have two seatings with two chefs each in charge of their own bar. It is one of the best sushi spots in LA serving lots of exotic fishes not found at other sushi bars. Currently they just serve sushi, but they are suppose to bring back some of the cooked foods that they use to serve at their Pico location.
Be the first to ReplyHad an amazing some 3 hour Omakase culinary experience.
So satisfying. Sashimi melted like butter in my mouth. Everything was pretty perfect for me. So lucky to be able to finally dine here.

Kaiseki style with sushi that i was actually full with! I highly recommend this place and we had great conversations with the other guest and sushi chef. The theme was mushrooms so we had a lot of mushrooms in most of the dishes! Be the first to ReplyExquisite dining experience.
Appreciated the variety in the course, and the attention to detail and precision of flavors were remarkable. Shima aji and kanpachi were my favorites. Shunji San's sake is also a must try.

Be the first to ReplyCelebrated our anniversary here served by chef Miki.
The omakase meal started off with a few appetizers then led to a sushi course and finished off with dessert. The whole meal took close to 2 hours and the cost per person is $250 before tax and an alcohol menu is placed at your seat before arrival. The food was spectacular and chef Miki is a talented chef who explains all parts of each dish and is easy to hold a conversation with. If you haven't had the pleasure to dine with Chef Miki, the other room gets booked much quicker so I highly recommend giving this room a go as well.

Be the first to ReplyWe were able to grab a table with Chef Miki on short notice
We were able to grab a table with Chef Miki on short notice because our reservation at Ginza Onodera was cancelled because of their staff having COVID exposure.Anyways, I really enjoyed the edomae sushi here. Chef Miki has great technique and seasons the rice very well with Yokoi akazu. The shari dispersed in the mouth well and each grain is individually seasoned while having a superb taste. The personal standouts for me were the suzuki, nodoguro, bluefin akami, otoro, and Santa Barbara uni. However, I had to reduce a star due to two factors:1) Service didn't start on time. We were seated in a counter of 7 but unfortunately the gaggle of older single Chinese women arrived well past the reservation time. We shouldn't have been penalized for the other party being disrespectful to the chef and our party being punctual. Michelin meals that cost over $700 should start on time at the scheduled reservation time.2) We felt that the appetizers were a bit weak and lacking. The chawanmushi was served cold when ideally it should be served warm and was lacking proper seasoning. A tomato tofu was served which overall was a bit odd and didn't fit into the flow of the meal; it was a bit too clever and a normal silken tofu would have sufficed. The one appetizer that was impactful was the blue shrimp and scallop with a viscous vinegar sauce; it captured the natural flavors of the proteins and was enhanced by the sharp vinegar bite of the sauce.I think once these issues are addressed and the menu is solidified from top to bottom (inclusive of the dessert which was decent but not something to write home about), this establishment can gain a 5 star review.

I went there twice for omakase dinner in two month, and some dishes expressed me a lot.Pros:1 the skin seared sashimi with salt is one of the best bite of sashimi I ever had before, the flavor of fish and salt perfectly balanced.2 the monkfish liver with toasted bread tastes like heaven. I need a cup of sake for this dish itself.3. Their vegetables and wasabi are super fresh, juicy and delicious. I still couldn't figure out how they can make wasabi taste that good, none of those Michelin sushi bars I visited had such fresh taste wasabi.Cons:Their fish tasted more jelly(sticky) instead of juicy and soft compared with other sushi bars. I don't know if it's done purposely or it's just because the fish was unfrozen to tasted like this.I like the jelly feeling somehow but it repeated too many times in several different dishes that my tongue feels glutinous and dryafter.

First you have to find it, but once you do, you'll want to find it over and over again. The dining is intimate, right at the sushi bar, and the omakase here features beautiful sushi but also seasonal vegetables expertly prepared for maximum flavor. Highlights include snappy fiddlehead ferns, bold brussels sprouts, white asparagus topped with caviar, and some beautiful sweet ramps with bonito. There's an onion soup that is literally the richest soup you'll ever taste, and a fried Oyster ball that captures the perfect balance between butter and brine. Nigiri includes cuts of snapper, tuna, a seasonal trout, etc. There is a Sea Perch that will blow your mind, and Shunji makes an Ankimo that will turn even the pickiest eater into a liver-lover. Abalone slices are a sea-steak, on a bed of uni rice. The liver sauce is understated yet bold and bitter, and it makes the subtle sweetness pop.Abalone, Anago, and Tamago for the finish. It's an amazing meal, but to say that does it no justice. What you get here is an entire journey in all these courses, and the chef is a master of everything. He even brews his own sake and it's the smoothest I've ever had. They only seat four at a time so there's some pressure to socialize, but Shunji is the kindest person there is, and we ended up next to absolutely lovely regulars. If you're ever lucky enough to snag a reservation, be prepared for one of the best meals you'll have all year!

My fiancรฉe and I experienced 9 Michelin restaurants over the last 30 days in 4 cities. This was the 10th and the absolute worst. If the bill was 1/2 the cost, then I would have given them 3 stars but for 2 people at nearly $800, it was the 3rd most expensive with only about 40% of the courses being great. When we walked in, they didn't know if they had a pairing course (huh?), and as other reviewers have stated, there is a slight smell originating from the kitchen. Also, the Chef's fingernails were not clean, which was just disgusting as he prepared each dish barehanded. We frequent Asuka in Westwood every other week and at 20% of the cost, I would rate that place much better than here. Move on...
Be the first to ReplyFantastic sushi omakase experience.
Quality of fish was excellent and dishes were all immaculately prepared in front of you. Place looks non-descript from the outside but inside, the decor is very nice and quiet. The chef who prepared our sushi wqs friendly and made us feel very comfortable. What else is there to say? Price is on par with other high end sushi places. Give them a try, you won't be disappointed. Menu is seasonal and changes every few months or so. Probably the best ankimo(monkfish liver pate) I've ever had, which is saying alot because it's not my favorite. There is metered street parking.
Be the first to ReplyAn incredible hidden gem.
I visited their old location and it was a shock to walk inside. The slightly rough appearance of the area melts away when you enter the building. The lunch omakase is a fantastic deal and is some of the best sushi I have had outside of Japan. This restaurant should be considered among the highest quality classic sushi restaurants in LA, along with Sushi Gen.
Be the first to ReplyLets keep it real.
You have to be prepared to drop $700 for two people if you want to have a robust sake and omakase experience at a restaurant that takes this much pride in its dining experience. Attention to detail is the name of the game here because both the quality of the ingredients and the presentation are top notch. As is usually the case with omakase, you may find that you didn't LOVE every dish that was presented to you. That's okay because you'll also likely find some things that you've never eaten before and DID love. It all balances out in the end. The service was impeccable and the dishes, for the most part, were memorable. For those omakase aficionados, this is a must-try.
