Shinzo Omakase New York Reviews from The Last Year
Delicious, affordable, great service.
Ambiance lacking but ABSOLUTELY worth it ! I went for a birthday and they gave us a few special menu items and a handwritten note.
Wow. Omakase at a lower price, a must-visit for those
Wow. Omakase at a lower price, a must-visit for those trying to get into the NY sushi scene. Decided last minute (about a few days out) to do an omakase in NYC and found this place--high ratings and last-minute reservations, too good to be true? With a quick 13-piece meal lasting around 35-45 minutes, I was left extremely satisfied. It's not the most filling meal but every bite was an experience! No complaints about any pieces but my favorites were the Wagyu Beef, Salmon+Foie Gras, and Hirame. All fresh, savory, delicious. In this small and intimate setting, the sushi chef was extremely accommodating and willing to adjust to our preferences. With free sake, it was bound to be a good time. Shinzo was a highlight on my NYC food trek, visit it for yourself!
Out of so many $50-$100 omakase places in NYC, Shinzo
Out of so many $50-$100 omakase places in NYC, Shinzo really stands out. The fish quality was and the rice texture was amazing. Usually there's at least one piece I'm not satisfied with, but I enjoyed every single course! There was variety in the seasoning, but it never overpowered the taste of the fish. $69 for 13 courses makes Shinzo a slightly better deal than some of my other favorite omakase places at this tier. They also have an option to double the courses for 2x the price, which is wild but apparently people have done it and even ordered extra on top of it! Would definitely recommend and come back - still thinking about that unagi course...
I've been here twice now, once in October and once last
I've been here twice now, once in October and once last night, and both were absolutely 5 star experiences. The quality of the fish and the service are both excellent. Their set menu for their omekase has great variety, and every piece is perfectly prepared, with no pretense, no elitism. I don't normally like yellowtail or tuna, but when I've come here, I've never deviated from the menu. I do appreciate that they allow substitutions, as my friend who has dined with me doesn't eat certain fish and doesn't eat beef (they have waygu on their set menu). No extra fees are charged for substitutions. Their chefs are fun to watch, and they'll talk to you, but it also feels comfortable to talk to your dinner companion without engaging the chef. The timing of each piece is perfect. Not too rushed, not too slow. Their flamed pieces have a perfect smokiness to them, and their ikura is the best I've ever tasted (not too salty, and slightly floral from the hint of yuzu they use). Their bathroom is brightly lit and clean. Their music playlist is solid. I'll be back for sure!
Very high quality sushi for an affordable price.
BYOB and great service, Definitely recommend
A tiny tiny place that seats maybe 10 people.
Recommend reserving ahead of time. Super cozy and intimate, which is a must for omakase. The options were a la carte or the 69$ 13-piece course. I got the 69$ course option, super good pieces with wagyu and uni and sweet shrimp. Of course they are on the smaller size but you have the option to get double. Today included a surprise hand roll at the end. And the technique they used to roll it was so different, wished I had taken a video or something. I asked my seat neighbor how they heard of the place, but apparently they are all the rage on social media right now! I had no idea.
TLDR: best bang for your buck since Sushi by Bou.
Pleasantly surprised by the quality and well worth the price. SETTING: we made a res for a Saturday night at 7pm. It is a no frills, 10ish countertop with a couple tables for additional seating, omakase spot. When we arrived we were told there would be a small wait as the other guests from the seating before were finishing up. Thankfully the wait was only 5 minutes and we were in by 7:05. FOOD: the sushi here was very good. Each piece was perfectly accompanied by something that only highlighted the quality and taste of the fish- for example, yuzu salt, caviar, eel sauce, scallion, etc. nothing overwhelmed and the focus was always on the fish. We kept saying that we will definitely be back- always on the hunt for quality sushi that doesn't make your eyes water at the price. And this place exceeded our expectations - $69 for 13 pieces is unbeatable especially with this level of quality. SERVICE: the sushi chefs were nice, focused and mostly kept to themselves. The waitress was very nice. Water never went unfilled and they get you in and out in an hour. VERDICT: Shinzo has usurped the throne that sushi by bou once held (back in the day) in terms of quality and price- we will be back!
This omakase place is a jackpot all the sushi was so good
This omakase place is a jackpot all the sushi was so good at a great price. Went there with my family and everyone had a great time and were happy with food. Make sure to check this place with friends and family. The chefs are great at the omakase and very nice. The ambiance is pretty cute and clean. Loved it here
Not knowing what to expect, Shinzo has a stellar record of
Not knowing what to expect, Shinzo has a stellar record of online reviews and I was excited to check them out. The place is small and familiar with the L shaped counter seating 7 and a few more small tables at the entrance. As you walk in, single sever checks you in and assigns seats. They checked our dietary restrictions, my guest has shellfish allergy, which they accommodated without issues. You have an hour to consume 13 nigiri pieces. Everything was precut for the exception of uni and ikura. The cuts are generous considering this is probably cheapest omakase in the City. The fish I was told is mostly from Japan unless stated on the menu otherwise. The highlights were torched sablefish which was buttery and also the A5 wagyu. Marinated ikura and Hokkaido uni were tasty as expected. I ordered a $25 Shinzo special towards the end as 13 nigiri didn't fill me up. This was more like stacked greatest hits but tasty nevertheless. What separates Shinzo from higher end omakase is time and detail of preparation. No miso soup, salad or other non sushi/sashimi options. You're not lingering here, although we didn't feel rushed. They also added an extra course for my birthday which was a nice touch. Overall happy to say was a fun hour and would come back again.
First time at Shinzo, and absolutely loooved this place.
We booked last seating and although they were out by a couple of items by then, everything still came together so well! We chatted with Yi for a bit who was absolutely amazing, he made sure we were having a great time throughout our meal. Also note that they only use Hokkaido uni which I'm a big fan of. The restaurant itself is a small space, probably less than 10 for seating, but this made it easier to interact with the chefs and we also started chatting with other diners next to us! Can't wait to come back soon

It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
