Came here last August with my GF to celebrate our anniversary and had one of the best Omakase experiences I've ever had. Highlights were:Uni - the freshest uni I've ever tasted with a natural sweet taste that had a texture that burst with every chew. I didn't want this bite to end.Shrimp - I initially thought, what kinda Omkase would dare try to put basic ass shrimp on the menu and oh how I was so wrong. The shrimp was raw and marinated overnight in a sweet and savory marinade (mirin & soy sauce maybe?). This was my second favorite bite as the texture/flavor was mind blowing. Like the uni ever chew of the shrimp exploded flavor that found its way to your taste buds that made you feel like a warm blanket was thrown over you after walking in the cold.Every other fish piece was excellent with the sushi chef educating us of what fish we were eating and where it was from. The most excellent part is that they actually use real Wasabi root on the pieces of fish the chef determine needs it. It was enjoyable watching the chef grate the root very delicately then brushing the shaved root onto the fish.

Really hospitable, and funny, sushi chef for your omakase experience. The fish and style is very traditional edomae style, so you shouldn't expect any fancy toppings and gold flakes. Most of the fish were carefully seared, cured, or smoked with just slight hints of flavor, bringing the fish's natural flavor out. My meal consisted of a good range of red/black snapper, barracuda, tuna, and clams/scallops. Overall a really delicious meal. However, if you are looking for sushi that serves more over the top things, I would recommend going to Sushi Bar instead. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience and with the final price of $240 including tax/tip + sake it is fairly reasonable compared to other places in town.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious, highly highly recommend.
Will definitely go back!!! It was my first time trying Edomae style omakase! I loved the entire experience here from food, service, to ambiance.

Fun night in an intimate seating situation, with interesting dishes and a fun, chatty chef who can answer all questions. It's a very fun experience, longer than most omakase courses and with lots of little dishes that are memorable. Easy parking in the lot for dinner.
Be the first to ReplyThis is hands-down my absolute favorite omakase sushi spot
This is hands-down my absolute favorite omakase sushi spot in LA.Everything was wonderful. Standouts for me were the seared toro and uni from Mexico (felt like I was reborn here)."Mmmmm" was often the only words I could verbalize while dining here. Also, tofu mousse!!! Had a fun time chatting with Chef Azumi during and after dinner as well :)Will be back soon (again & again)!
Be the first to ReplyThis is a real Omakase experience.
Intimidate. Considered. A work of art. The outside is very unassuming - it's in the back of a quiet strip mall, roughly in the north west area of the mall (plenty of free parking). Interior is clean, simple.Cuisine is fantastic.Delightful fish, thoughtfully prepared to showcase the fish itself. Chef will walk you through each course, sharing insight on himself and his craft. Nothing is overdone- everything has balance. Even the anchovy (iwashi) was full of wonderful anchovy flavor without being overpowering (I tend to like gamier sushi, such as Saba, so I can be tolerant of excess but did not find it here).Great selection of fish from a variety of locations, with plenty from Japan.Chef is humble and you can feel his passion. One regret I had was my own fault, my husband suddenly got sick and was unable to go. I should have called ahead to let Chef know and regret it after seeing his effort behind the experience he created. Hope it says something that I left my husband at home because I didn't want to miss out (sorry, not sorry).I hope to be back soon! I recommend for people who want to experience a culinary journey with the craftsperson who curated it.
Be the first to ReplySimply incredible! A sushi experience like no other.
Very minimalist simple classic sushi environment that offers Nigiri exclusive fish from Japan, in house tofu, miso soup like you have never tasted before, the fish that you cannot get in a regular sushi bar, sake selection unmatched. No soy sauce, no wasabi, the ginger is organic special select, just enjoy. Jazz music, the chef prepares the sushi with a rhythm, explains every serving where the fish came from. By the way the absolute best Uni I have ever had. It was from Mexico! All of these is for a hefty price tag of $270 per person! If you can afford it, then enjoy. I think it's worth it.

I had an incredible experience here on a rainy tuesday night. Small, strip mall joint, only omakase at dinner. It was just the chef and his wife, and both were very warm and friendly, and the meal felt playful and interesting. He clearly knows what he's doing and enjoys it too.The focus is almost entirely the sushi save for a single assorted appetizer plate and a mid meal miso soup. Felt very traditional, but also quite a clear personality coming through that was memorable, with creative use of marinades and seasonings, and some unusual choices, inlcuding an incredible trout, a bundle of japanese chives, and the softest/sweetest clam I've ever tried. Price was high (~$200), but comparable with other Omakase restaurants at this level. For my taste, this was one of the best I've had in LA and I can't wait to bring someone here.

Trying this Omakase place for the first time and it was an amazing experience. Each piece tasted sweet and savory. Some the fish seemed like it would be fishy but they weren't! I would definitely recommend this place! The chef was really cool and explained each dish. The service was great as well! But you need a reservation and make sure to arrive on time. 14 course Omakase for $425 w/tip.

Shin provides a refreshing experience with an excellent variety of tastes and textures that deviates from a typical sushi regimen.Chef Azumi has an electric personality that can't help but brighten the room with smiles all around. The colorful ways he described the sushi gave me a greater depth of understanding of his art.Azumi's hand-picked ingredients from the morning shine with the care he puts into each piece. Some were seared quickly, others were baked. Some had a smooth rich flavor while others had the plump and firm texture. The grassy Japanese chives were a pleasant surprise! I really liked that each sushi was so unique despite being dressed with similar sauces. I didn't feel like I was ever forced to differentiate minute variations in taste from piece to piece but rather that I could be immersed in a symphony of distinct flavors through the direction of the chef.Thank you Chef Azumi for the experience!Make sure to book in advance because there's limited seating. They offer 2 dinner sessions, and we recommend eating at the bar for a front seat view of the master chef making each sushi piece.

When my husband and I got there the chef didn't even greater us! The sushi is good but it ain't word the 400$ for two ppl. I think there's better places than place with fresh fish, nicer staff .I honestly regret spending my money here. Definitely not coming back!!!

Only two seatings per evening are at 5:30P and 7:30P. Service is only omakase with a price that varies. Ours was $172 per person with nigiri at $5 to $17 per piece. Our total tab for two people drinking and tipping conservatively was $475. The entire dining room is served identical courses simultaneously. The dinner starts with an appetizer plate with mostly pickled vegetables and an outstanding crab tofu. A miso soup made with seafood stock is inserted among the 14 pieces of nigiri sushi. On our visit, the fish varieties used were typically found at other high-end sushi bars except for the baby chives (okay not a fish) and salmon-like freshwater trout. A simple dessert of whipped tofu or scoop of ice cream finished the near perfect meal. Some chefs try to conform to a basic standard of what is generally considered sushi while others inject some of their own personality into the sushi. Chef Taketoshi Azumi, formerly of Mori Sushi, presented interpretations that favored large pieces of fish with a small amount of rice and a light application of fresh wasabi. He frequently seared the fish which meant most nigiri were served warm rather than cool. If not seared, seasonings like soy, yuzu zest, or bonito flakes were regularly added. Due to the enhancements to the sushi, the attention leans away from a clean and pristine focus on raw fish. If this isn't your idea of sushi, then this might not be a good place to visit. Not ground balls at the shin, I felt his style repeatedly homered over our heads and out of the park.
Be the first to ReplyVery beautiful dinner service, intimate and long.
The best sushi and overall a full dining experience--learning about the really good fish and chatting alongside eating it.

I can not express the amount of love and joy this restaurant brought us for our anniversary back in March. The chef and his wife were the sweetest & most engaging chefs I've ever meet. We have been dreaming of returning in 2 weeks. I love this place soo much.
Be the first to ReplyVery nice and chill place, great service, delicious sushi.
They have good variety of sake. The ambience is nice and very welcoming. Servers are very friendly. Quite enjoy going there all the time.
Be the first to ReplyShin Sushi was recommended by Taka-san's brother Fumio
Shin Sushi was recommended by Taka-san's brother Fumio (Kogane Sushi). It was traditional omakase sushi. No disappointment. Excellent sushi and reasonable price. Taka-san took his time to explain the origin of every piece served. You'll become an expert of sushi by end of dinner. Shin sushi is a wonderful little gem in the NE side of L A.

Doesn't look like much from the street but they worked hard to get their Michelin star the sushi is fantastic the Omakase process is delicious even though I did leave a little bit hungry but that's a good thing
Be the first to ReplyTruly excellent omakase.
Go in with an open mind and an empty stomach and you will be very satisfied. I never thought I'd enjoy eating a whole crab in one bite, or a crunchy squid (?!), or a tofu mousse, but everything was delicious. Sake was excellent too, and the chef clearly puts a lot of love into every aspect of every dish.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is fantastic.
Very fresh fish. Omasake was expensive but absolutely worth it. We loved the whole experience from start to finish. The servers were outstanding.
Be the first to ReplyGreat sushi, quality fish in a hole in the wall Ventura
Great sushi, quality fish in a hole in the wall Ventura Sushi Blvd joint. The owner is friendly and is the consummate host in his establishment. Amazing variety of pieces in the omakase. Only critique is that I wish he would use "the sauce" only on a few pieces of the fish, not almost every one. It's also a bit overpriced for what you get considering the ambiance. But still very delicious!
Be the first to ReplyI'm not sure if I am an omakase sushi guy.
14 pieces is a lot of raw fish. I had some diarrhea the next morning. It costed about 220 per person after tip. The presentation was great, especially of the first plate, which was the one that had a small crab and monkfish liver. That was the highlight. The rest are just other fishes. I wish there was a little more soy sauce but I probably don't know what I am talking about. There was a foodie sitting next to us reciting all the dishes. I was reprimanded for asking a question because I didn't hear in the beginning. It's okay. The dessert was tofu flan, which was alright..I think I would definitely try more 1 star restaurants just so I understand the baseline for these restaurants.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent service, quality food, good company.
The chef and service are super attentive, accommodating and friendly and make you feel at home. We went for the omakase dinner and the welcoming and intimate ambiance doesn't disappoint. The fish is very fresh and simple every bite is savory, perfectly balanced.
Be the first to ReplyGreat sushi experience.
Sushi chef is engaging and talented. This guy has a focus to give a special experience to each customer. The fish is fresh and carefully selected, cuts are accurate, and the rice is perfect. The dining room is sparse and bare, I think that's kinda this guys style though, you come here for an amazingly put together food experience and that's it. The decorations won't impress but the food will!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing omakase dinner, I would highly recommend!I had made
Amazing omakase dinner, I would highly recommend!I had made a reservation for 530pm for a Sunday (a month in advance) and they called me the day before to confirm the reservation. I didn't pick up but they left a voicemail (phew!) so I called back right away. Make sure to confirm so you don't lose your reservation! We arrived 15 mins advance so we just waited in the car for a little bit (they've got a parking lot so that was convenient). They opened at 5:25pm.The food itself was incredible, I believe we had a 14-course dinner, I was so full (full of happiness though!). A lot of pieces were easily a 10/10, I remember loving the Hokkaido scallop, bluefin tuna, amberjack, fatty tuna (there's more!).The service was impeccable too, the waitress was very attentive and kept refilling our water and clearing our plates when necessary. As busy as the chef was, he also refilled our plate with ginger when he saw it was getting close to being empty (btw that ginger was so good and sweet!).The chef was soooo hilarious and very educational. He'd always take the time to describe the sushi, where it's from, how it's made, what he did (or added) to it, what's in season, etc. His English may not be perfect but that did not stop him from chatting, answering guests questions and laughing with everyone. There were a total of 6 guests (2 Asians and 4 non Asians) and he talked to all of us. The reason why I'm saying this is because I think I read some 1-star reviews saying he was racist and wouldn't talk to non-Asians people. I personally didn't feel any of these bad vibes at all, we had such a fun time!!
Be the first to ReplyShin sushi is beyond amazing.
Almost indescribable but alas, we must perform the Yelper duties and bring this review to life!If you would like to watch my dining experience, I somewhat vlogged my dinner!youtu.be/PpEXWM1pqwYI booked a spot with Chef Azumi about two weeks prior to my Thursday night dinner. Besides me, there was only another couple so three of us enjoying an intimate and quaint evening here. You would never suspect a Michelin star Omakase joint next to a feed store and liquor store with a Norm's at the entrance of the plaza but hey, never judge a book by its cover! My dinner was at 5:30 and I arrived a bit early unsure about seating or entering, but the doors remained closed until about 5:20. I entered and was greeted by Daniel, the only waiter here. He sat me at the bar still close to the chef and I had a moment to take in the simple yet amazing interior of a classic Japanese sushi restaurant.I ordered a Dasai sake that came in its own carafe and it was strong but not overpowering, slightly sweet and washed down smoothly.Soon after, dinner began! You start off with an amazing appetizer platter of squid, kabocha, tofu, and ginger. Chef does a phenomenal job at explaining each and every dish - the origins of the ingredients, textures and smells, what seasonings or cooking methods he used, and sometimes how to eat them. For the appetizer he said to eat the squid with the mustard miso he prepared right underneath it. I devoured everything on the plate! Then came the big lineup - the sushi! I believe we had 15 sushi pieces so 16 total courses with the appetizer, plus dessert. Each piece of sushi was so unique and you could tell Chef takes the time to individually prepare not only your own piece right in front of you, but he makes distinctions selecting and how to prepare each fish. Some pieces even come from the same fish species, specifically the snapper which he said one is an adult and the other is a young fish so they each had unique tastes and textures. Some of my absolute favorites for the night were the seared toro, Hokkaido scallop, uni, and sweet shrimp. But don't let that discourage you from the rest - every. single. piece. made me go "mmm" "ooo" "wow". So fresh, delicious, and meticulously crafted!Chef had prepared three desserts including a lychee sorbet, mango sorbet, and tofu mousse with black sugar syrup. I really could not decide so I asked Daniel to surprise me and to my absolute surprise, he brought me all three! The sorbets were cool, refreshing, smooth and fruity while that tofu mousse was out of this world, so creamy yet firm with the caramelized and toasty sugar sauce. The main omakase came to $144, after the sake and tax it was $178. I have definitely seen pricier options in LA without less praise and of course, restaurants and chefs and environments nowhere near as fun, interactive, immersive, and exciting as that which Chef Azumi brings you. I can not wait to return and will happily do so!
