I stumbled upon this place during the Chinese New Year
I stumbled upon this place during the Chinese New Year parade celebration yesterday & it was such a happy accident! We were sat quickly & they brought out the food as it was ready. The Shanghai noodles were the 1st thing to come out & they were very delicious! The seafood dumplings were my favorite between that, the vegetable & the pork dumplings, although all were good. The scallion pancake was the best I've ever had! Fluffy & the oil tasted very fresh! I only took a photo of the noodles cause my friends & I were starving by the time we got there, but anyways I highly recommend! I give 5 stars for food & service, but the ambiance is no frills & the bathrooms are not in the greatest condition so that's why I didn't feel as though I could give 5 stars for the whole review. But I DO highly recommend going & having the delicious food!

Food is back to pre Covid - excellent! We love this place but we can always get a seat. We love the bean curd with soybean and sponge gourd and pan fried boa.

The restaurant did not seem very clean, and the service was rude, impatient, and demanding. Other reviewers are correct that they want a high tip. Food was ok but not fantastic. We ordered orange chicken, stir-fry noodles, a pork dish, and hot and sour soup. I wasn't feeling well and only wanted soup, but the server was rude about me not ordering more. The hot & sour soup was the worst I've had. Bland and flavorless. Overall, it was a weird vibe and didn't feel comfortable dining there. I was relieved when we left, and wished we had gone elsewhere.

We waited a long time for our order to be taken in a not full restaurant. Feel we were overlooked often. Wait staff literally ignored us. Order was wrong--the appetizer was delivered after the meal was finished. Dumplings appetizer was tasteless. Required a mandatory 15% tip--but feel it was not deserved because of the service we received. Do not recommend.

The rating would have been better if the service was better! They seated us quickly then proceeded to ignore us. We finally got a waiter's attention and placed our order. The food came before the appetizer and we had to ask for it. No rice was served with our entree though other tables had rice. We couldn't get any ones attention to ask for the rice. the entrees were delicious, saute' chicken and brocolli and Spicy General Tso's chicken but the poor service tainted the experience. Find another place to eat!
Be the first to ReplyVery good food.
We've been going there for a number of years (family, friends). The Shanghai kind of food we Cantonese like; that's saying much. We are of the opinion that the owners usually are not that friendly in entertaining customers, so they're less popular in Chinatown compared to another on the Bowery. There they knew, entertained news media critics, so got written up, and people flock to them. The Heping menu is good Shanghai food, of course. The prices are much much preferred over the other one. We just had another great lunch there yesterday with a dozen friends. We loved say the Shanghai Rice Cakes (上海年糕), or Chicken with rice cakes.... Highly recommended. Then, we just love their pan seared (fried) buns (生煎包), and Steamed (Shiao Lung Bao小籠包). Too bad I don't know some food critics here in NYC. Or we will recommend them to visit and write their critique, so Heping would be competing for customers for their fine food.

Service and cleanliness were alright but they were speedy and the food was delicious. I loved the sauce on the Shanghai Pan fried noodles and they were a very wonderful level of crispy and crunchy. The soup dumplings were hot and wonderful!

Bought 3 lunch specials all comes with rice and hot n sour soup Took them 30 min during lunch hr. Who has .30 mi. During lunch? Drunken chicken-tasted bitter Preserved mustard with tofu skin-greasy and no taste Pork with dried tofu-nasty Hot n sour soup-look and tasted like left over from night before. Every dishes was pretty bad. I think this would be the worst Chinese I ever had. Wonder where they find their chef

One of the most authentic Shanghai dumplings outside of Shanghai. Very well made. The drunken chicken was very good too. Be careful they want 18% tip minimum there! Yikes It was a below average service

The soup dumplings were pretty good! But the spring rolls were disappointing! The service was quick but not friendly. The restaurant was in a good location but not very clean.
Be the first to ReplyVery mediocre soup dumplings at best.
The skin is on the thicker side, but the worst crime is the soup itself which was very bland and tasted "watered down". The portions are great and on the cheaper end compared to other restaurants nearby.I did try the soup dumplings here a few years ago and it was not this bad. I'm not sure what happened.

There are several Shanghai restaurants around Chinatown, but this one is cheaper than the other ones. When I entered, there were two parties dining, where one party consists of two young females possibility from high school enjoying their afternoon snack of pancakes and dumplings while the other consists of two middle-aged men.I ordered the vegan duck and cold jellyfish. Such items are usually served as appetizers when eating at a family gathering. The vegan duck consists of mushrooms wrapped in tofu skin while the cold jellyfish was lightly flavored. While waiting for the food, I saw that a server was making dumplings. Next to the enterance were two unopened boxes of HDTVs.

Great lunch! For around $9 you get a decent dish with rice and soup. They serve tea too. I have to say the quality of this lunch dish at this price is way far exceed the expectation. I ordered a spicy sautéed chicken and the moment you put into your mouth you will realize it is fresh right out of the wok.The only thing I have to complain about is their wifi. There is no wifi available at this location. probably they don't know how to set it up properly.
Be the first to ReplyBest shanghai style food in Chinatown Manhattan.
Everything is solid, fried pork buns comparable with flushing

Their orange flavored chicken is incredibly good and very decent price. I recommend this place .
Be the first to ReplyGood foods but I don't know what's wrong with their service.
I guess service is always bad so maybe people don't tip here so they aggressively ask for tip before they take our credit card. The waitress lady was doing the same thing to every table so all the customers looked pretty uncomfortable. Food was good and it opened until late but they need to do something about their service though.

This place overall has decent food at super cheap prices; we tried the wonton soups, smashed cucumber salad, soup dumplings. By far, the real star of the show here is the pan fried pork buns. My coworkers and I were raving about the pan fried buns here because they are so exceptionally well made. The dough is very evidently handmade -- pillowy and slightly sweet, while the bottom is crispy. Inside is super juicy (careful not to burn your mouth!). Literally you have to come here just for the pan fried pork buns because they're so amazing. They have quite a large space for Chinatown too, which is always a nice plus and service was pleasant.
Be the first to ReplyCame here for lunch on a Sunday and the food and service
Came here for lunch on a Sunday and the food and service was horrible. I already have a low base for the service for Chinese restaurants and pretty much expect nothing but for them to take my order and give me food but they couldn't even do that. We sat down and waited maybe 25 mins asking 2 separate people if we could get a menu before we got one. And then had to wait forever to get someone to take our order and every step after required us flagging down multiple people. Every waiter just looked confused like they didn't know what they were doing. The food also was not good. We got the Xiao long bao (pork) and it was the last dish to arrive and at that point we were already done eating. The skin was super thick and it was not good. They also didn't give us the dipping vinegar and we had to chase somebody down for that as well. The scallion pancake was super super greasy and not flaky as well. Basically there's no reason to come here bc the food is bad and the service is somehow worse. It's a huge waste of time. Do not recommend.
Be the first to ReplyReally enjoyed having lunch here.
We had:- Pork and Crab Xiao Long Bao - super good! If you haven't had them before, make sure to bite a bit of the bun off, drink the soup inside careful because it'll be hot and then eat the whole thing (with or without vinegar)- Shanghai Style Fried Rice Cake- EggplantAll were super delicious! Service was good too, and the restaurant has a lot of space for seating.

Soup dumplings hit the spot!! Wasn't a fan of the Szechuan bc of the peanut but my boyfriend loved them! Shrimp dumplings were pretty okay :3
Be the first to ReplyI visited this place out of recommendation.
The service was pretty good. I didn't however get the owners name as I requested from server so that I could talk to them about a issue I was trying to be discreet about. Does anyone know the owners name so I can contact them.

I will admit, we should have known before we went in, that it wasn't going to be a good experience. We were walking by looking for a nice affordable restaurant. There was two ladies waiting outside really being pushing for people to come in- red flag number one. The ambiance was off from the start, and when we finally got seated and ordered, the waitress seemed very uninterested and unfriendly. The food was okay. They charged my friend for two separate things, instead of the combo, so they could get more money. Our other friend got the mushroom soup and it was very different than what it sounded like, so she didn't end up eating it. When the bill finally came, after asking for it multiple times, we asked if she could split it, she said she couldn't. We were only a group of 3, and restaurant should be able to split it. Then when the bill came we left a tip, even though the service was terrible. The waitress stated "there is a 15% minimum tip requirement in Chinatown". We all knew that is not true, so I asked her to show me that in writing. She came back, started yelling at us, and showed me other people receipts and said that they all left a tip... When I asked where it says that leaving a 15% tip is a requirement she couldn't. We ended up saying that we weren't going to leave more of a tip because of the soup. She crossed off the tip, but still charged us for the soup and she could not shoo us away quick enough
